Soon they all came to a halt and everything was silent. The path stopped, it just dropped off into the abyss below. It appeared as if this was what they had traveled out here to see, but it couldn't be, could it? How could this possibly bring Vidia's memories back? Was this really all there was? Why would this need so much protecting and guarding? Lord Milori had been unusually on edge, so to speak. He even had said that this was a place you didn't want to be sent to. What was so bad about this?
The girls each looked up and down to figure out if there actually was something to see. It wasn't until they looked distantly ahead that they saw the faintly lit doors. Tink looked ahead and contemplated for a moment, but a voice instantly grabbed her attention.
"Take another step and it will be the last of you. Nothing can fly in here, whether it be a fairy or even an owl," Milori stated abruptly.
Without some sort of way to cross they were sitting ducks.
No one said a word as rounded blocks of ice, out of no where, began to float toward them. Each of the blocks varied in size, from the smallness of a berry, to the hugeness of a leaf. It wasn't long before Tink and her friends realized that it was the Keeper behind them who was causing this with his tall staff. Slowly and carefully the blocks made a neat and perfect path with tiny stones filling the cracks between the large ones.
Queen Clarion lead the way with Milori close behind her. He would be ready in an instant to catch her if she were to slip. Of course he would not fall, he... would.. never... fall...
His nails dug into the ice as he tried to keep himself from falling. It felt as if his arm was about to rip off. With his other arm he held the hand of a messenger. Slowly the ice was pulling away from his hand.
The terrified messenger stared up at him, hoping he could save them. In her head she thought, "He's the Lord of Winter, of course he can,".
After a few strain filled seconds passed the young fairy's hand began to fall from his grip. Milori tried to hold her with all his might but she suddenly fell. He could only listen to her screams, not being able to bear to watch.
In the next moment something snapped him back into reality, a shriek. Within an instant Milori caught Silvermist's arm before she could fall. Quickly he pulled her up and they continued on towards the doors.
When they finally reached them they all stood silently a moment. Clarion looked back a moment to the opposite end of the path. There the Keeper stood as he nodded to her. She then turned forward once more.
Milori watched her hesitance, he knew this would happen. She still feared the sparrowman that was locked on the other side of these doors. He also knew that her stubbornness would make the best in her. So she lightly pressed her hand to the door. Clarion winced slightly, and when he inched forward she shot a glare at him. Instantly he backed down.
The doors opened and a dark figure was kneeling on the ground. It looked up, meeting Clarion's eyes and letting out a low laugh. Tink and her friend peered around her and watched.
"You've finally come back! After all these years!" the figure bellowed.
Milori pressed his foot to the chains that bound him and he fell to the ground. His face was heavily bruised and he grinned up at the winter sparrowman.
Milori pulled himself back onto the ice and stormed over to the chained up sparrowman. Immediately he began to pound his fists into him. All the while the sparrowman continued to laugh. It only angered Milori further, causing him to punch harder.
Both Clarion and the Keeper tried to pull him away but it was almost impossible. "You murderer! You killed an innocent girl! You shall stay here forever, Shade!".
They then pulled him back across the solid path, but once there he pulled away. Milori shattered the bridge and the chunks fell into the abyss.
"Come to your senses finally? Ready to set me free?" Shade questioned.
"You will never be free!".
"Milori," Clarion hissed. "We have a proposition for you."
"What could you possibly..."
Shade immediately was at a loss for words when Vidia came forward. "Vidia?".
"Who are you?".
"Vidia it's me, Shade,".
"I'm sorry, I don't remember you, or anyone in fact."
He reached out to her hand and suddenly she froze. Images and voices flooded her mind.
"Vidia?".
She pulled her hand away and slapped him as hard as she could across his face. Then she got up and ran, past Tink and the others. Hot tears began to stream from her eyes as she hopped along the ice. Vidia lightly bumped into Dewey as she passed him, but she didn't look back. She knew what Shade had done and she knew what he was. He was a murderer. All he had ever done was cause her pain. For years she had tried to forget him, but now it would be impossible.
Everyone watched as she disappeared out of the cavern. Dewey let out a sigh and turned back to the others. After a while they closed the doors and crossed the path once more.
Milori noticed that Clarion had seemed different ever since they had come here. She was more uptight, but worst of all she seemed angry with him. "Clarion, are you alright?".
She had her fingertips pressed to her forehead. "I'm... fine." There was pain in her voice.
"Clarion, are you sure..." he spoke as he reached for her free hand.
"I'm not helpless!" she snapped and she smacked his hand away, before walking off.
He was surprised, never in all his years had he expected her to say or do anything like that to him. Something was wrong, she was trying to lie to him, but why?
Meanwhile on the opposite side of the doors.
"Happy now, I did my part," Shade muttered as he got up and the chains with ease fell away from him. "You gonna give me the power that you promised or what?".
"Be patient. The time will come," a hidden figure stated from within the shadows.
"But you said!".
"The plan isn't complete yet!".
"Oh what are we waiting for?".
"She may already be trying to push him away, but he isn't worrying yet. We must wait. Just until they're too busy fighting to look over their kingdoms."
"How are you so sure that that will happen?".
"The Lord of Winter has quite the temper and it will surely overpower him".
I know it's been a while, but I'll be writing one chapter for this story every week from now on. There's a new google plus page for this story. u/0/b/113833359288527896628/113833359288527896628/posts/p/pub?hl=en
