The tree tops rustled with the wind, shifting the sun's rays beneath them, the ground sparkling with the beams swaying in different directions. Tarzan walked slowly, Jane by his side, his hand still holding delicately on to her wrist, both seeming oblivious to the contact between them. Tarzan turned his head looking down at Jane, watching her eyes dart from one sight to another, feeling something close to envy at her fascination of the jungle, at the surroundings that are still as new to her now as they were a few months ago. However, when he gazed at her, he felt the same emotions flooding through his mind.
He knew now he was not alone. He began to understand that he is not as different as he thought. He was part of a brand new word, a part of someone else's life, a life that felt almost similar to his, yet so foreign.
His intrigue led him to lose focus. Tarzan did not understand the new emotions surging through his body when Jane was near. He shut-out the entire world looking in to her eyes. Jane made him question what he knew, why he was feeling strange, face flushed at times, body aching when he had a chance to touch Jane's skin.
Not realizing he kept his eyes locked on Jane, he was unintentionally leading them in the wrong direction. Jane lifted her head up to ask Tarzan a question when she realized his eyes were intently focused on her. Her cheeks began to flush a rosy red from his gaze; she quickly diverted her eyes away from Tarzan, clearing her throat, snapping Tarzan out of his trance.
Vivian sighed heavily behind them, grumbling underneath her breath briefly before speaking up.
"I appreciate that Tarzan is showing us the gorillas but if we walk any farther, someone is going to have to carry me back to camp. Just saying."
Dex sent Vivian a look of exasperation as he motioned Vivian to take a closer look at how Jane and Tarzan's body language seemed from behind. Vivian grasped the situation immediately and began to giggle slightly as she motioned a closed zipper upon her lips, grinning at Dex.
"Um, wait. Jane. Tarzan," Dex raised his voice slightly, grabbing their attention. "Maybe we should stop for a few minutes, eat something. I honestly have not eaten since last night," Dex began to realize how famished he really was watching Vivian turn pale from the lack of energy. Vivian quickly dropped her backpack and searched for some form of sustenance.
"You're right," Jane added. "I should eat as well."
Tarzan understood them and released his hold on Jane's wrist, looking above him before swiftly running towards a tree, climbing it rapidly, disappearing through the dense branches.
"Where did he go?" Vivian asked, already stuffing a granola bar in to her mouth, hastily swallowing it in its entirety.
Right as she was swallowing the remains, Tarzan abruptly dropped to the ground near Dex and Vivian, Vivian spraying Dex with the remains of the granola bar that were heading down her throat, coughing from the pain.
"What the hell?!" She spoke hoarsely trying to get the remains of food out of her throat.
"Oh come one Viv!" Dex swiftly wiped the saliva covered granola chunks off his face and shirt.
"Oh goodness. Are you alright Vivian?" Jane walked toward her, giving her a stern pat on the back. "Tarzan, you shouldn't-"
"Food," Tarzan extended his hands, fruit filling his palms.
Vivian was still coughing from the almost regurgitation of her food but she was unable to stay angry for long when she gazed at all the beautiful colors Tarzan was holding.
"Wow-" One last cough escaped her mouth as her eyes widened in glee.
"Eat," Tarzan said to Vivian handing her the fruit in his left hand. He stood up and extended his arm towards Dex giving him some of the fruit in his right hand. Tarzan walked over to Jane, taking her hand in his and placing an enormous orange in her palm.
"For Jane," Tarzan uttered, smiling softly at Jane.
"Thank you Tarzan," Jane spoke, gazing down at the oversized orange barely able to grasp the monster fruit. Tarzan grabbed the top of the fruit, his hand grasping half of it firmly, and swiftly tearing the fruit in half, the juice dripping down Jane's hand as the other half of the fruit was in her hand. It was the brightest orange she had ever seen and the smell was intoxicating. She brought the fruit to her mouth and bit in to it, some of the fruit's juices smearing on to the tip of her nose. The sweetness of the fruit made her senses come alive as she savored the taste of the African jungle.
"This is incredible," She boasted, watching Tarzan lift his free hand to gently wipe away the liquid on her nose, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. Jane blushed immediately, pressing the fruit against her lips, keeping her focus away from Tarzan, trying not to make eye contact as she felt her entire face begin to burn from the sensation. Even though Tarzan has been with them for a few months already, she still cannot shake the bashfulness she has towards Tarzan, his lips softly forming a delicate smile, watching her with complete disregard for anything else.
"Oh my god this is the greatest thing I have ever tasted!" Vivian elevated her voice, unable to hide the exhilaration from the flavors that were surging through her mouth.
Tarzan's smile turned in to a wide grin as he looked over watching Dex and Vivian devour the jungle fruit.
"Wow. They are really enjoying that fruit," Jane snickered watching them scarf down the last of the fruit, licking their fingers, trying to get the last of the juices from their hands. Tarzan looked back at Jane, seeing the inside of the fruit almost completely gone. He handed her the other piece in his hand.
"Jane want more?" Tarzan asked, a little worried he may have not gotten enough for her.
"Oh, no thank you Tarzan. That is enough for me for now," She gave Tarzan a reassuring smile as she began to eat the other half.
A sigh of relief escaped his mouth as he once again traced his thumb near Jane's lips, brushing off some orange pulp from the corner of her mouth. Jane could not control her body as that contact made her shutter, her face tingling as a warm feeling spread across her entire body. She was shaking slightly as her breathing increased. Trying to hide the obvious stimulation from his touch, she distanced herself from Tarzan, walking over to her bag and kneeling on the ground, rummaging through her backpack for absolutely nothing, but it was a distraction she needed to calm the increasingly longing feeling that was coursing through her body for Tarzan.
The awkwardness Jane was feeling and the elation Vivian and Dex were experiencing had abruptly been cut short as a rustling in the tree tops turned in to a large body falling straight toward them.
Jane sprung to her feet, all the contents of her backpack tumbling out.
Vivian and Dex nearly leaped out of their skins, falling on their backs, lifting their heads slowly to witness a leopard five feet from them, baring its sharp teeth, saliva escaping its mouth. Tarzan leapt in front of Jane, watching as the leopard made its way toward the other two, ready for a good meal. Tarzan made his way to the leopard, leaping on its back and wrestling it to the ground.
The big cat was not amused struggling underneath Tarzan's body, able to escape from the ape man's grasp. It bared its teeth once more toward Tarzan, Tarzan growling deep, his body hunched in an attack position ready to defend the others. The leopard did not make another move as it just glared at Tarzan, its eyes darting behind and around Tarzan and then backing up slowly.
This confused Tarzan as he did not know what he would do next and a split second later the leopard escaped through the jungle bushes.
"Tarzan!" Jane shouted running towards him and then gasping as she ran past him towards Vivian and Dex.
"Are you two alright?" Jane grabbed Vivian by the arm and helped her to her feet before they both pulled Dex up.
"What the hell just happened?" Vivian was hysterical her body beginning to shake from the realization that a leopard was a mere five feet from her. She was almost inconsolable and Dex's arms swung around Vivian, calming her down.
"Viv-"
Jane turned to see Tarzan gazing in the direction the leopard had disappeared off to, before he turned to face Jane.
"Jane, leave," He uttered and disappeared in the same direction the jungle cat escaped to.
Jane was utterly confused by this action as she brought her attention back to Vivian and Dex and their faces had the same perplexed look as she did.
"Where did he go?" Dex spoke, still holding Vivian who had calmed down.
"I-I don't- we, uh, should go back to camp," Jane spoke picking up her belongings and walking back towards the other two.
"Are you sure?" Dex could not register everything that happened in the span of only a few minutes but the look on Jane's face did not need further explanation.
"Yeah, let's go back," She walked hastily with the other two back to the camp. She could not shake this ominous feeling, and she only hoped that Tarzan would be safe.
"Wait, Mr. Clayton look!" O'Riley points in front of them as they watch a leopard run past them through the bushes.
"Mr. O'Riley wait," Clayton grips O'Riley's shoulder and pushes him down to squat. Clayton motions him to keep quiet as they watch the ape man come in to view, his pace just as fast as the leopard, running as if to catch the jungle cat.
"He's getting away!" O'Riley shouts as he stands to try and run after him before turning around to see Clayton just standing there.
"Mr. Clayton, we need to catch up to him."
"No we do not," He turns back the way they came and motions O'Riley to follow.
O'Riley quickly catches up to Clayton, a little perplexed why they let the jungle man go. He is the only one that knows the location of the gorillas.
"Why aren't we going after him?"
"Because Mr. O'Riley, we are not prepared for what we may find."
"But you have a gun. Surely there should be no problem."
"No, Mr. O'Riley. We will not be shooting any gorillas. They are worth more alive than dead, for now. How were you planning on capturing on of them? Drag them along. These creatures will sooner rip your body apart then calmly stroll alongside of you while you feed them bananas."
"Well then what do we do?"
"You will gather any men that we do not need at the site and you will tell them to go out of the jungle in to the cities. They will get all the supplies we need to ensure our abundant hunt is a success," Clayton grinned pondering over all the riches that he will collect with those gorillas.
"What kind of supplies?"
"I will take care of that Mr. O'Riley. Just make sure your men are there to pick up everything. Those kids will help guide us to our future fortune. All I need from you is some extra hands for this. Get it done."
It was crucial for Clayton that this plan came together. He was already beginning to see the dead end that the digging expedition was inevitably bringing but this was a plan that would not fail. All he needed was for everyone to play their parts. He may already have the family fortunes, but this would make him more powerful than he could have ever hoped to become. His grin became wider as he proceeded to return to camp, devising a way to get those kids to help him find his new treasure.
Tarzan leaped and swung through the trees, trying his hardest to get to his destination. He leaped through a few more trees before he heard the screeching of gorillas, the noise becoming louder the closer he approached it. Through the branches he saw the leopard, the one he was chasing, making its way toward a gorilla. Kerchak lay on the ground on his side, slowly trying to get up. The leopard did not give Kerchak any opportunity as it leaped again, aiming to kill the gorilla. The big cat was cut short as Tarzan leaped off the branches, shouting as he came down, only to hinder the leopard's actions as he sent it flying in the opposite direction as Kerchak, tumbling on the ground, falling through bushes.
Tarzan turned his gaze toward Kerchak for a second only to hear the leopard burst through the bushes attacking Tarzan. Tarzan thought quickly as he sprang above the leopard, tumbling as he landed and ran for a tree. The leopard was only a millisecond behind Tarzan, clawing at him as the ape man was ascending a tree, trying to evade the leopard.
The leopard was relentless as it drove its claws in to the tree and hastily made his way up toward Tarzan. Tarzan looked around for any means of hindering the leopard immobile but his thoughts made him lose sight of how close the leopard was to him and with a sudden leap, the leopard had slashed Tarzan across the chest, digging through his bare flesh.
Tarzan grunted in pain as he fell off the tree, heading for the ground. He quickly located a vine and grabbed on to it, repositioning his body and swinging toward another tree. The leopard did not let up as it followed soon after Tarzan; blood-lust filled its eyes, once again, climbing the tree to get to Tarzan.
He had only moments before the leopard would once again be attacking, and Tarzan had no means of defense. He saw that towards the bottom of the tree there were elaborate vines and roots that jutted out of the ground moss covered but had enough openings for Tarzan to safely maneuver through them, so with one leap he fell toward the vines, the leopard releasing its claws from the tree and down with Tarzan. Tarzan was able to force his way through the opening and begin to descend deeper in to the entangled mess as the leopard vigorously began to claw through the roots, getting closer and closer to Tarzan.
Tarzan was running out of options as he glanced behind him to see another web of roots lying horizontally to the ground. His focus was swayed for a second and it lead the leopard to tear through, attacking Tarzan head on, the roots snapping underneath the both of them, sending them tumbling down on to the ground.
Tarzan did not realize the roots did not have a solid ground underneath them for a few feet and the weight of Tarzan's body coupled with the leopard overwhelmed the roots and they snapped, sending both of them in to a dark pit.
The gorillas around were silenced by this and stared in uncertainty as they heard minute shuffles coming from the pit.
Kala looked in dread. She could not see what was happening and she only hoped those muted shuffles were not a sign that the leopard has won.
The gorillas looked in disbelief as they saw the body of the leopard slowly make its way out of the hole, only to see it slump over, Tarzan coming out underneath it, his breathing erratic as his head fell slightly, watching the body of the leopard. A vine protruded out of the cat, blood soaking its fur and the object that killed it.
Tarzan began to hear another screeching, this time a positive feedback from the gorillas as they all descended down toward Tarzan. Kala smiled, thankful at seeing Tarzan alive.
"Out of my way, out of THE way! Best friend coming through," Turk nearly shouted pushing the other gorillas to reach Tarzan.
"And you! Don't make a habit of that okay?" Turk was relieved that Tarzan was alive. He had the habit of being overconfident even when he was surely out matched. The gorillas began to disperse as they watched Kerchak come in to view, his eyes widened slightly at the sight of the leopard. Tarzan picked the corpse and made his way to Kerchak, placing the cat in front of him.
Tarzan believed that maybe showing Kerchak he can be one of them, can protect them, that Kerchak can finally acknowledge him as a part of the family, as his son. Kerchak's eyes seemed softer for the moment, gazing at the leopard and then moving his focus to Tarzan.
It was all cut short by a loud noise that resonated throughout the jungle. All the gorillas were startled as Kerchak looked up and then at Tarzan.
"Everyone let's move," He began to walk away from Tarzan, all the other gorillas following. He looked out in to the open jungle and a realization came to mind.
Jane.
That noise seemed to be coming from the direction Jane was in. He immediately sprung through the trees and swung, trying to reach Jane as fast as the vines would take him.
"What in the world are you doing Mr. Clayton?" Ndiaye spoke taking his hands off his ears. "Are you out of your mind?"
"There was something in those trees," Clayton spoke convincingly. There were no creatures in sight but he had to play this charade to get what he needed from Ndiaye.
"Mr. Clayton. We are at camp. You cannot shoot this weapon hear where the students are. What if you had stricken one of them?"
"I am competent with my weapon Mr. Ndiaye. I reassure you none of your students will be injured by my gun. I cannot say the same about the creatures that roam around these parts."
Jane, Dex, and Vivian ran in to the camp, a look of distraught on their faces as they gazed upon Clayton holding his weapon.
Ndiaye saw the three of them and hastily walked in their directions.
"You three, please, go in to your tents. Now," He spoke with authority behind his voice as the three of them hurriedly made their way in to one of the tents, pulling the zipper down leaving it slightly open.
"What is going on?" Vivian whispered looking at the other two.
"Shh," Dex hushed Vivian before slowly pulling the zipper up and peeking through to try and hear the conversation.
"Mr. Ndiaye, I think it will be in the best interest of the students if you sent them back to the huts. It is the only way we can do an extensive sweep of the jungle and try to isolate any potential threats."
"There will always be threats Mr. Clayton. This is the African jungle. That is why you are here with Mr. O'Riley and the rest of the team, to keep the kids safe."
"Yes, but we have seen an outbreak of jungle cats in the area and we cannot just begin to shoot at them all now can we sir? I personally have nothing against it, but the law is the law," He spoke with such plausibility that he saw Ndiaye begin to wonder whether it really was as safe as he thought it was.
"Now Mr. Ndiaye this is temporary, really. The kids will be back exploring the jungle in a few weeks, a month at most."
"This is not the news they want to hear right now," Ndiaye sighed, looking at the tents behind Clayton.
"But it is the news that will keep them alive," Clayton patted Ndiaye on the shoulder as he left him behind. He had convinced Ndiaye to go back to the huts, go as far away as he needed them to be. Now all that was left was dealing with those kids and that ape man.
"No, they can't just stop this now," Jane spoke looking at Vivian in disbelief.
"Apparently they can. We have no choice Jane. You heard him though, a month tops. We will be back roaming through the jungle before you know it," Dex smiled at Jane. He knew that she was thinking about Tarzan the entire time.
A bell rang and everyone seemed to emerge from the tents, a look of confusion upon their faces.
"Everyone, please, I must say a few things," Ndiaye motioned to the fire pit and all the students sat down, watching Ndiaye.
"Alright, I will just say it. We are going back to the huts."
A rumble of voice began to fill the circle as Ndiaye gestured them all to settle down.
"I know. It is frustrating for me too. I have decided though that it will be the safest for all of us. Now today is your last day here so make it a good one and tomorrow we will head back to the huts. This is not the end of the expedition, just a little detour. Please come back before sunset," He walked out of the fire pit and back towards Clayton.
Dex turned to look at Jane who had her eyes set on the jungle behind them.
"We have to find Tarzan," She spoke and rose to her feet before heading in to the tent, grabbing her backpack and once again heading back from the direction they came from earlier. Dex and Vivian quickly got their stuff and ran towards Jane, trying to catch up to her.
"Jane, come on. We have been walking for over an hour. Can we just stop for a second?" Vivian collapsed on to the ground, her hands propping her body as her head tilted back and revealed in the sunlight that crept though the jungle trees.
"Jane I really don't think we should try to find Tarzan. He always seems to find us so why don't we just wait for him? Even if he doesn't come I am sure he will find us back at the huts," Dex understood that she was troubled by the situation but they did not have the time or energy to search the vast jungle for Tarzan.
"You are right. I'm sorry," She sat down on the ground, her back hunched as she brought her backpack towards her and rummaged through it. She pulled out a few small jars and a plastic bag.
"Might as well get something to work on when we are back at the huts," She chuckled and rose to her feet and walked away from Vivian and Dex and knelt near a bush that was surrounded by colorful flowers.
"There you go," Vivian pulled out a few jars and pulled Dex with her opposite in the direction Jane went, searching for anything interesting to gather.
Jane gazed at the flowers before her; astonishment enveloped her as she observed the different colors within one group of flowers.
"Oh you all look wonderful," She spoke out loud, digging her hands into the ground, trying to get the flower in its entirety, roots and all. Suddenly a rustling in the bushes turned in to Tarzan walking through them, gazing at Jane who seemed to be unharmed.
"Jane," He said as he made his way toward her.
Jane gasped watching Tarzan come toward her. She was relieved that Tarzan was alright.
"Tarzan!" Jane stood and walked in his direction before noticing something on his chest.
"Tarzan, oh goodness! What happened?" Tarzan was within inches of her body. Jane's hands begin to tremble as she tried to touch his chest but knew it was not a good idea. "Tarzan, are you alright?"
Tarzan only smiled at her, comforted by the knowledge that the noise he heard did not affect Jane.
"Hold on," She ran back to get her backpack, throwing things all over the ground until she found a white box. She quickly made her way back to Tarzan clutching the box in her arms.
"Tarzan, sit. We need to take care of that before it gets infected," She said sitting on the ground and opening the box. Tarzan looked at her before he followed, squatting down to her level, watching the foreign items she pulled out of the box.
"Vivian, look," Dex pointed behind them, watching Jane and Tarzan sitting together.
"Tarzan's back. What a relief. I thought we would have to tie Jane up and bring her back to camp," Vivian snickered standing up and walking towards her and Dex's backpacks. "Let's give them some space," She carried the backpacks and they walked further back until they were not seen.
Jane pulled out a small sealed packet that she tore open. She then located her bottle of water and looked at Tarzan.
"Tarzan I need to clean the wound with just water first, get any dirt out. Um, so um, just uh….stay still," Her cheeks began to flush as she took her bottle and poured it gently on to his chest, watching the water come down his chest to his abdomen, his muscular upper body glistening from the moisture. Jane was going to lose it if she did not focus. The ripples of his muscles and his breathing expanding his upper chest caused her to almost lose her concentration on the task. She shook her head, which was an odd scene for Tarzan to witness, and took a cloth out of the small packet.
"Tarzan, this will probably hurt, a little compared to the pain you probably felt when you got that, but still, it will sting. It's to disinfect the wound, clean it completely. Um so I have to just rub this on your chest," Those words seemed awkward coming out of Jane's mouth as she played that back in her head, her hands shaking from embarrassment. Tarzan could not grasp the situation, but from the look on Jane's face, something was happening that caused Jane discomfort. He extended his hand toward Jane, slowly lifting her chin to look at her eyes which seemed to widen immediately from the touch.
She cleared her throat, turning her head slightly, her chin escaping his hand.
"I will…uh…be starting now," With one last inhale she placed the cloth against his chest and Tarzan instantaneously jerked back, looking at Jane with confusion.
"I'm sorry, so sorry, my apologies. I know it stings, but it will help clean your wounds perfectly. I'm sorry," She kept repeating those words 'I'm sorry' as Tarzan realized the pain goes away soon after. He looked at his chest and then back at Jane who kept apologizing.
He made his way back towards Jane, crouching in the same position and baring out his chest for Jane. She took that as an invitation to continue and she placed the cloth back on his chest softly, Tarzan's body shuttering slightly from the pain and then relaxing again. When she moved around the wounds, everywhere untouched by the cloth he would feel the pain but then after she went back to that same place he would not feel the same pain again.
She finished with the cloth and took out a tube that she squeezed out the contents of in to her palm.
"This is ointment Tarzan. It's to help heal your wound quicker. Don't, uh, don't rub it off," Jane cleared her throat realizing that her hand will be in direct contact with his bare chest. Her breathing became choppy as her heart quickened and her face felt like she was in a fire pit. Her hand trembled coming in to contact with his chest, slowly rubbing the gel from her palm on to his chest. She looked up at Tarzan briefly and realized it was a mistake. He gazed at her with warm eyes and a soft smile which made the situation worse. She quickly rubbed his chest with the gel and took her hand back towards her, her hands trembling.
Jane felt as if she would spontaneously combust at any moment, knowing her face is red and feeling slight shivers creep up her spine. She quickly took a piece of dry cloth and wiped the residue of the gel off her palm.
Tarzan felt warmth spreading through him while she was distributing the thick clear mud around his chest. Her hand was very soft and petite compared to his chest and she was gentle and he did not want her to stop. He wanted more contact with her, more of her skin against his. Tarzan felt differently whenever she was near him, almost lost in this new feeling, gazing at her with complete disregard for anything. He wanted her with him from now on, no more of her leaving and then him coming to find her. He did not want her out of his sight, out of arm's reach.
Tarzan reached his arms out to Jane's face, pulling her slowly to him as his lips touched hers, remembering how it felt when she did the same to him. Jane tensed for a moment before closing her eyes and leaning in to allow more contact between their lips. Tarzan felt a need to bring her closer to him, her body against his. His heart raced in his chest, increasing in rhythm with every second his lips were still on hers. His hands dropped down to the ground next to her hips as Jane's hands gripped Tarzan's arms gently, a sign Tarzan took as him correctly doing what they were doing. He leaned in more, causing Jane to move backwards, her back slowly coming in contact with the dirt.
She was so overwhelmed with his lips that she did not realize his body was hovering over hers. His hands slowly made their way to her hips, gripping them gently. He was mimicking Jane's actions that night, believing it is what the situation called for.
Jane parted her lips which Tarzan received as a signal to do the same and he parted his lips, their kiss becoming deeper than it was, his head tilting slightly as hers did the same and her hand left his arm and rested behind his head. Her breathing was becoming eradicate, unable to properly breath she gasp slightly releasing her lips from between his, before he quickly interlocked their lips again, tilting his head slightly more, intensifying the moment.
Jane's body began to shudder underneath his. Tarzan's hands have not left Jane's hips. He was consumed by the moment, by her touch, her silky lips against his, her petite hand gripping his head. It was overwhelming for him and he began to lose control of his actions. He suddenly clenched Jane's hips tighter and pulled them against his body, his pelvis making contact with her, his groin between her legs.
This contact snapped Jane out of the trance she was in and immediately she released her hand and her palms pushed against his shoulders sending her body sliding against the dirt from underneath him, quickly stumbling to her feet, trying to catch her breath, trembling from head to toe, her arms wrapping around her abdomen, looking at Tarzan with distress.
Tarzan just gazed at Jane. He was in as much confusion as she was with shock. He did not know what had happened that caused her to react this way but she seemed to move back slowly.
"Jane," He uttered her name and she gasped. She could not get her head around the moment and began to stumble with her words.
"I should g-…I need…I-I s-should…I need to go," She finally got the words out before walking swiftly towards her backpack, shoving the items on the ground forcefully and swiftly back in, not giving him a glance as she walk away, Tarzan left there, baffled.
She made her way to Vivian and Dex where she simply stated "We need to go" before walking hastily away, no eye contact between them. They were both left there befuddled as they saw Tarzan come in to view, his face looked just as confused as they were.
"What just happened?" Vivian questioned as she stood and ran after Jane. "Jane wait!"
Tarzan walked towards Dex, wanting to go after Jane but had a feeling that it would not be wise to seek her out right now.
"What happened Tarzan?" Dex asked Tarzan glancing at him. He saw Tarzan did not comprehend the situation.
"I don't understand," He simply stated.
