Chapter Seven.

It had been three weeks since the incident, where Elsa had accidently hurt her Mother. Shortly after, the King had reluctantly banished her to her room, informing her that she would spending most of her time there until after the baby was born.

When the young Princess had asked if she could see her Mother, her Father had made it clear that the Queen was very tired, and needed a lot of rest before the baby arrives.

Elsa didn't mind her room. It was filled with toys and books, and her Father would buy her anything she asked for. But despite having all those things, it didn't substitute spending time with her parents. Of course she didn't blame them at all, especially her Mother, for wanting to keep her distance. She had hurt her - not intentionally, but she had still lost control of her powers, and as a consequence, she had hurt someone she loved deeply.

It was late one afternoon when her Father came to visit her. "Papa!" she yelled ecstatically, bounding towards him and leaping into his arms.

Adgar smiled as he held his daughter. "Hello, my little snowflake. How's daddy's little Princess today?"

"Better, now that you're here," she admitted, as she took comfort by leaning her head against his chest.

The King continued to hold her tightly, never wanting to let her go, but this was sadly a fleeting visit. "Elsa, I'm sorry, but I really can't stay long. I have lots of important meetings to attend to, and then I need to get back to see your Mother."

"Papa? is Mama going to want to see me again? I miss her. Doesn't she miss me?"

Her tender words broke his heart. "Yes, of course she misses you. And she does want to see you. As soon as the baby is born, we'll be back to being a family again."

"Do you promise?"

Adgar nodded promptly. "I promise. Now, Gerda is going to draw you a bath and then she'll fetch you your supper. I will come by later to kiss you goodnight."

"But I don't want Gerda to give me a bath. I want you to do it."

"I'm sorry Elsa, maybe some other time. Now, please be a good girl for Papa."

Elsa reluctantly nodded. "Okay Papa, I'll be good."

It was another week later, and Idun was taking a leisurely stroll around the royal gardens, when Adgar decided to join her. "How long are you going to keep this up, dear?"

The Queen instantly feigned ignorance. "I have no idea what you are talking about."

"Idun, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Our daughter is back at the palace, alone and awfully confused as to why her own Mother is refusing contact. Confused as to why she has to spend most of the day confined to her room. This is getting out of hand. She is our daughter, and good or bad we have to support her and give her as much attention as we possibly can. We simply cannot keep her isolated, it isn't healthy for such a young child."

Idun stayed silent. Part of her did miss her daughter terribly, but the other part was frightened of her, and what she was capable of. "I know that, Adgar. But she could of killed me, or the baby. Her powers are not going away, and as you refuse to find a solution to get rid of them, then I'm afraid this is for the best."

Adgar grabbed her arm, more forcefully then intended. "Best for who? for you? for me? for Elsa? She did not ask to be born with this gift, or curse, or whatever it is. But I firmly believe there is a reason for everything. Maybe one day we will understand why. However, right now. Our daughter needs us...both of us."

Guilt ridden, Idun could feel the tears pouring down her cheeks now, as she slumped into his arms. "I'm sorry Adgar. I am so sorry. After the baby is born, I will try better. I will."

The two royals stood there for what seemed liked hours, in each others arms, until Adgar broke the silence and freed himself from her embrace.

"Idun, I love you more then you know. But I love Elsa too. We have to keep showing her that we love her, no matter what. Love seems to be the key to keeping her powers under control."

The Queen composed herself, acknowledging what he was saying, before slipping her hand into her husbands. "I understand. Now, please take me back. After all this walking, I'm so very tired. I think I need to lie down."

On the short walk back, Adgar turned to his wife. "Idun dear? There is one more thing we need to discuss. It's about the baby's name..."

Another week passed and Elsa was becoming increasingly lonely. Her Father's visits were becoming less frequent, and she cried herself to sleep every night.

Gerda was like her second Mother now, and Elsa had become very attached to the older maid. One night, as the older maid was putting her to bed she asked, "Gerda. Would you be my Mama?"

The older woman smiled softly. "I'd love to, Your Highness. But, you already have a Mother, and she loves you very much."

"I don't think Mama loves me anymore," she admitted softly, her eyes brimmimg with fresh tears.

Gerda stroked the young Princesses forehead. "What gives you that idea?"

"She hasn't come see me in such a long while. Even Papa has stopped coming. I must have been a really bad girl for him not to want to see me."

Gerda's voice cracked as she cradled the young Princess close to her. "Oh sweet child. I heard your Mother has been a little poorly lately. Your Father has had to neglect some of his duties to take care of her. He has been exhausted. I think that is the reason for him not visiting you. But look, the baby is due in a matter of days. Once he or she arrives, I bet they'll both be so happy to see you. Now, close your eyes and go to sleep."

"Goodnight Gerda."

"Sweet dreams, Princess."

That night, Elsa was abruptly woken by the sound of loud footsteps and an array of different voices. The Princess clambered out of her bed and slowly made her way over to the door. Then opening it very slowly, she peeked out into the hall.

There were maids and servants running along the halls towards her parents bedchambers. Some carrying towels, another with a large basin of water.

What's going on? the little girl thought.

As she stepped further into the hallway, a pair of arms whisked her into the air and she was carried down the hall, before being firmly propped down onto a chair. Elsa looked up to see one of the young maids smiling down at her.

"It's so exciting. The Queen is having a baby," she squealed. "Don't worry, Your Highness, I'll inform His Majesty you're out here waiting," she added, before disappearing into her parents chambers.

Elsa rubbed her eyes, before looking down at her empty hands, suddenly realizing she had forgotten her favorite doll, the one she was wanting to give to her new sister when she was born.

Elsa was too scared to go back to her room alone, so she waited and waited. There was a dreaded silence, followed by sudden screaming and crying and the words 'push' over and over. She was actually concerned..so concerned as to why her Mother seemed to be in so much pain, that ice began creeping up the nearby wall and towards the ceiling.

Kai strolled down the hallway, and caught sight of the young Princess sitting there alone. He could instantly feel the change in temperature, as he shivered. "Your Highness. Whatever are you doing here? You should be in bed."

"Why is my Mother screaming? What are they doing to her?"

Kai immediately crouched down in front of the frightened child, taking hold of her tiny hands. "Your Mother is absolutely fine. It just means the baby is coming out, and sometimes it can hurt a little, but try not to worry yourself...please?"

Elsa frowned. "A little? it sounds like it hurts..a lot."

Before Kai could explain further, they were both interrupted by a loud, high-pitched cry.

Elsa leapt up from the chair, the ice instantly dissipating. "Is that my new sister?"

Kai chuckled. "Or brother."

"It's a girl. I just know it."

Moments later, the door swung open and the King appeared holding his new little bundle of joy. The maid and servants vacated the room, allowing the King, Queen and Elsa to be alone with the new baby.

As Gerda brushed past the young Princess, she subtly winked at her, and Elsa returned the gesture.

Although the birth had been much quicker and less complicated then the first, the Queen was still extremely exhausted, and before her older daughter's arrival, she had promptly fallen asleep, leaving Adgar to introduce the new baby to the Princess.

"Elsa, come meet you new sister, Princess Anna."

The young child slowly and cautiously, approached the sleeping baby. It was wrapped so tightly in a pink blanket that she could only see a tuft of redhair peeking out.

"Hello Anna. I'm Elsa. I'm your big sister." She then took hold of her sister's tiny hand and kissed her on the forehead. "She's so warm and very cute," she concluded.

"Yes she is," her Father replied. The King smiled down proudly at his two beautiful Princesses. All the worries and reservations he had about how Elsa would react to her new sister quicky diminished. "Now, I'm going to put Elsa in her crib and then I'm going to put you back to bed."

"But..."

The King waved his finger in front of her. "No buts. Your Mother, as you can see, and I are utterly exhausted. But don't worry, Anna will still be here when you next wake up."

"Can I say one last goodbye?"

"Of course."

Elsa approached the crib and gazed down at the younger Princess. Her big turquoise eyes were now open and she was staring up, as if transfixed on her older sister's face. "Guess what? when you're old enough, we're going to have so much fun. But don't worry. No matter what happens, I'll always be there to protect you."
