Happy Valentine's Day! Finally going to update! Been SOOOOO busy with school and homework. Been having writer's block and have also been working on my other fanfics. Thanks for staying with this story! Enjoy!
Barren.
That's what the town looked like. There was no one outside. Swings swung gently as if the wind were pushing them, and tumbleweeds randomly rolled by. The sky was clouded over with murky grey wisps of clouds like it was about to rain. All in all, it almost looked like one of the dusty ghost towns that were played in the western shows where the hero always ends up stranded.
"So where are we going?" Martin questioned while staring at everything in slight shock.
"We should probably go to..." Chris started with a shrug before being interrupted.
"The house," they both muttered at the same time before heading down the street. They kept walking until they came to an average looking home. It was painted a white that was starting to peel off and fade. The two brothers shared a silent conversation with each other before quietly pushing the door open.
The inside of the house looked like it was in good shape compared to the outside. It was crazily clean and well organized. Nothing really seemed to be out of place. The brothers glanced around before looking towards each other nervously.
"What happened to everyone and where," the others almost ran right into Chris, who had stopped because of he was seeing, "What's wrong?"
"No one's here," Chris mumbled simply before he strolled over to a cabinet that was stocked with animal food such as dog food, cat food, and bird seeds. Opening it, the others whistled.
"Wow, that's a lot of food," came Jimmy's comment.
"They must love animals as much as you guys do!" Koki shouted with a somewhat amused smile on her face.
"That's so sweet," Aviva stated while her grey eyes swept around the room in curiosity.
"I didn't think that they would still have that stuff," Martin said distractedly, "I thought that they only really did it because we loved animals."
"I guess not," Chris absent-mindedly whispered before spinning around to face the group, "The real question is: where are they?"
No one stated their opinions in fear of getting too optimistic. So they all stayed silent. Each went their own way to some part of the room to inspect so they could find out what had happened. Chris was still right next to the animal food, and he was staring at one specific bag without seeing it.
Suddenly, there was a small noise from inside the cabinet. Chris stiffened before something translucent rushed out of the bag. It was a cat. It was a midnight color with a white stripe down its back like a skunk, and its eyes were an almost white.
¨Skunkie?¨ Chris wondered with a whisper and the cat rubbed against his ankle while purring. It eventually moved towards the door where it sat down and began to meow. No one else seemed to notice that the cat was even there, so Chris was about to open his mouth to tell the others that they should follow him. But the cat gave off a sharp hiss of warning before disappearing through the door.
Chris glanced at the crew before quietly sneaking out of the house. When he got outside, he began looking around to see where the cat had gone when he once again heard a meow. He decided that he should see what Skunkie wanted, so he began to follow it.
It seemed to lead him around aimlessly as it was anywhere and everywhere. But it finally paused out by a dark clearing while meowing.
¨Is this where you are trying to lead me to?¨
Meow! Meow!
Chris moved to look at the clearing better when Skunkie hissed and jumped onto a tree before disappearing with the shadows. Chris quickly glanced around while spinning in slow circles. He began thinking that perhaps there was nothing important there when the shadows thickened. A scary form appeared from the dark to reveal itself.
¨To what do I owe the unexpected visit?¨ The hiss-like windy voice called out as the shadows formed to show the one who had taken Martin over.
¨Unexpected,¨ Chris muttered under his breath in confusion, ¨You set up Skunkie!¨
¨Yes,¨ the form cackled before shifting behind Chris, ¨That little cat! Put up such a fight!¨
Just then, angry scratch marks seemed to glow a bright crimson on the black to the shade and the shadow winced slightly.
¨But it eventually gave up,¨ it whispered into the air as the clearing got even darker, ¨It's now under my control! Just like some others will be soon!¨
¨What?¨ Chris stared in shock at it before realization flew across his face, ¨What did you do to them?!¨
¨Better question,¨ a gloomy pool of shadows formed to show his parents, ¨What did you do?¨
¨Wha-¨ Chris was interrupted by a cruel laugh.
¨If you didn't have your powers,¨ it paused for a dramatic effect, ¨Then they would be safe. But that can be changed! All you have to do is give over your powers!¨
¨No,¨ Chris simply glared at the now raging shadow, ¨You'll harm them anyways. And that's not what I want.¨
¨Aw...¨ it moved a formless hand over its pretend heart in mock hurt, ¨You don't trust me?¨
¨No.¨
¨Well,¨ the shadow faded until there was only a canine smirk left, ¨Then it looks like you're not getting to have a choice!¨
It rushed upon him in a blur of ebony. Before he could even react, the darkness blinded him, and he heard a few words.
I would say SWEET DREAMS the voice screeched But there won't be any for you!
Then everything went silent, and Chris passed out.
