Hotch, Prentiss, Morgan and Rossi waited for what felt like eternity in the waiting room. Prentiss was hugging herself while her body was shifted forward, Hotch's foot tapped with frustrated impatience, and Rossi just stared. Morgan was in a wheelchair and his broken arm was covered in bandages.
"Spencer Reid?"
Hotch stood up. "That's us."
The doctor had blood on his scrubs and some on his gloves as well. He spoke with hesitation.
"I'll need to talk to you all in private."
"You can tell us here. We want to know as soon as possible."
"Ok." he said "Spencer has received life threatening injuries and his heart stopped several times during surgery. He has also slipped into a coma. He has papers that request that he doesn't receive any pain-killers but what he has gone through in the past couple of days is nothing like I've ever seen. If he wasn't on the drugs, he would be in unimaginable pain that would greatly delay,if not stall, his recovery."
"Anything else?" Hotch said while looking at the ground, still taking in what the doctor had just told him.
The doctor sighed with sympathy "Spencer was raped multiple times. And due to the deep bruises on his thighs, treatment for his internal injuries are going to have to be delayed for a while."
Everyone looked like they were in despair. Morgan would probably flip a table if he wasn't on drugs. His eyes burned with anger. Prentiss covered her distressed face partially with one hand. The doctor felt bad for them.
"I'm very sorry this happened. No one deserves this. Spencer is a fighter and should make a full recovery. "he said with some hope in his voice "he has a wonderful support system right here. You can visit him. And you should do your best as to not disturb him. But right now, I'm uncertain how long it will take for Spencer to exit the ICU." he said
"One more thing." Prentiss said
"Yes?'
"Do you know when Spencer will wake up?"
"Only time will tell. Although he's not awake, I think having his family surrounding him will help. You know, a lot of people report hearing their relatives around them even if they are in a coma."
"Alright...thank you." Prentiss whispered.
"You're more than welcome. Please push the call button above his bed in case he wakes up."
Everyone began to slowly go into Spencer's room. Prentiss fell back, nervous about what she was about to see. When Prentiss walked in, it felt like being punch to where the air was knocked out of her. Spencer looked so small and weak. Like he was going to sink into the bed at any moment. Most of what she saw wasn't even Spencer, mostly the bandages, wires, needles, and casts that covered his body more than his blanket. The most visible parts of his body was his head- which had purple and black bruises littered all over- and his skinny shriveled up hands that were positioned awkwardly at his hips.
"Oh honey." Garcia said while lovingly brushing her fingers across as little of Reid's hair as possible. Aware of the stitches to his head, she began to sob silently.
"Garcia", Morgan said, coming up behind her in his wheelchair, which Rossi was pushing.
"I can't believe he tried...he tried to go." she cried. "Why? Why our little genius?"
"I don't know…" Morgan said, his mind going blank. He felt like a jerk for his empty answer, but his head injury from the car accident and getting shot caused him a lot of confusion and slight delirium. He wished he could be of greater support for Garcia. He looked to Hotch's eyes as a call for help.
"Fact is, it's only uphill from here." Hotch said. "He's going to need a lot of help. We can start that together by making sure at least some of us are present when he wakes up. He's going to come out of the coma confused, scared, and terrified. He might even still be suicidal."
Garcia whimpered.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you. But we need to be realistic about what's going to happen. Spencer's the one suffering the most here. He'll need all the help he can get."
