Chapter 7: Leaving Memories Behind.
Uriah and I walk hand in hand silently as the sun starts going up. It took him a little bit to overcome shock and walk back here. I was okay with that. So we remained on our roof and just talked as we held each other. He wanted me to explain what I was told about our child. Then he laughed and made some type of joke about me, him and how things just happen. Uriah has a hard time not making jokes. I'm okay with that to a point. He made me forget everything going on around us. Him leaving. We talked a little about that. He wants me to come with him, but I need to be careful and bring things I would need just in case we don't find something. Uriah seems different too now. He seems a little confused, but he's trying not to show me. So I'm not going to mention it. We walk closer to the Erudite building and I see Mark with a group of Factionless patrol. I take in a deep breath and roll my shoulders back.
"One of mom's leaders. He hates me." Uriah nods and holds my hand a little tighter. Mark turns at the sound of our footsteps and crosses his arms over his chest. I roll my eyes and continue walking.
"Tell her it's done." I tell him in a low voice as we past. I don't look at him or acknowledge him in any other way. Uriah smirks once past him.
"Your mother knows?" He asks.
"Had to tell her in order to get checked. I was consisted a traitor after all." I scoff and Uriah pulls me closer to him.
"A traitor." He mumbles with a laughs and kisses my head. "You aren't capable of being a traitor." I roll my eyes and laugh as we reach the doors. As long as Bass isn't around, I don't care right now if Uriah kisses me. I yawn as he opens the doors. This place is still bothering me. "You need to sleep."
"No, I got shit I need to do." I tell him as I shake my head. "You know, people to see, things to get. All that jazz." I mumble and Uriah takes me past the group of confused people. I don't really see if their Factionless or not. I could care less.
I take Uriah to his room so he can go to sleep or have so time to process without me and go up to see my mother. I need my guns. I have to get them back. Especially now that we're leaving and I'm pregnant. We don't know where we're headed into. I push the doors open to her office and find her with a group of people. She looks up and me and sighs.
"I will have to see you guys in a moment." Evelyn stands up and the people turn around to look at me.
"No problem." Someone says and they leave.
"What was that about?" I ask with a yawn.
"The Allegiant might have had a meeting last night." She says as my back is turned to see the last one shut the door.
"What makes you say that?" I ask before turning and sitting in my normal chair.
"There was a rumor about it, but we couldn't find it." I nod and place my feet on her desk. "Did you?" I shake my head.
"I was with Uriah, telling him." I deadpan. "He was trying hard not freak out. So I came here so he could." Evelyn nods.
"So while you were busy, the Allegiant could have had a meeting." I shrug my shoulders.
"Really? Why are you concerned? You know personally how long it takes to plan shit." I mumble with a yawn. "I wouldn't worry right now about what they're doing. Work on a plant." She nods.
"Do you want to be that plant?" I shake my head no.
"I got other things to worry about, like Uriah. He seemed get a little pale before I left him in his room. He is probably freaking out right now and talking to Zeke." I state boredly.
"And you're not concerned that Zeke might go to tell Tobias?" I shrug my shoulders.
"He'll find out one way or other. That only way Uriah found out was because it slipped out." I tell her. "IF Zeke tells him, I would be with Uriah and be able to stop him if he gets pissed." I tell her and she seems to be calm.
"But that's not the reason why you came." She states.
"No, I want my guns back. They give me the security that Marcus took away. It was very hard telling Uriah and feeling very exposed emotionally. I need them back." I tell her firmly. "I'm not going to use them unless I need to." I add. "I just feel better with them since I really shouldn't be running or fighting. Not safe with the kid." I pat my stomach and she just looks at me.
"You have a way with words." Evelyn states slowly. "Fine, whatever." She waves her hand and stands up. I watch as she walks over to a filling cabinet and unlocks it with a key and open a drawer. I smirk for a second as I see the red Amity bag. "It's comical, having guns in the Amity bag." I nod. "Almost over looked them."
"That's why I had Red Amity and Gray Abnegation, Mom." I tell her as she shuts the drawer and locks it again. "And to kind of mock the faction. I tried living with them and well, I was forced on the peace serum." She nods and walks over to me and drops the bag in my lap. Right away I open the bag.
"Everything is in the same condition as you had them to begin with." She states before walking over to her seat to rest her head in her hands. "Maybe you can shoot and kill the Allegiant for me."
"Not a chance. To be honest." I tell her as I grab a gun and check the contents. "I won't shoot them. Not if it's my friends or people I know are good." I tell her as I move to the next one. I got to be honest with her. "Like Bass. I won't be able to shoot him if he was. Nor Uriah." She rolls her eyes as she is being herself.
"Your brother isn't a part of the allegiant, Aundrea. He is with me." I shrug my shoulders and continue my check.
"Whatever. If Uriah tells me he's a part of it, then there's no question to it. I hope you know that." I warn her. I don't like what she's doing, but I will honor her because she is the woman that gave birth to me. "It's rare when I fine a man like that." Evelyn looks at me.
"So your loyalty is based on a boy?" She asks slowly.
"A man and the father of the child I'm carrying. No boy. He past initiation." I correct her very firmly. "He wants to be a part of our child's life. I haven't had a parent before so I want to make sure I give the child what I can."
"Fine, I will expect no less from you." She sighs. "I still need to prove myself then."
"You always need to prove yourself to me. After all, I don't know you." I click the last chamber shut and stand up. Two guns are slipped into their place. "I love you though." That's the last thing I tell her before leaving her. I don't think I will see her again. My hand touches the door.
"I have always loved you and your brother." She says quietly. I can't help but scoff as I walk through the door. The people file back in as I throw my amity bag over my shoulder and walk over to some random person.
"Where's the former Erudite doctor named Eloise?" I ask him firmly. He stares at me confused. "I need to speak with her now."
"She's on the fourth floor." He states slowly and starts to leave. I grab his arm and pull him back.
"You are going to take me to her, right now. You can tell who ever that I was the one that stopped you." He swallows hard. "Aundrea Johnson. Evelyn's daughter." His eyes widen and he sets the paper work on the counter and takes me to the elevator.
"Sorry about that Ms. Johnson." I roll my eyes. The ride is quick and I am lead to her 'cell' and left there. It's not lock so I walk in. Right away, she looks up and me.
"Aundrea." She says before running over to me and hugging me. "Thank you so much for saving our life." I nod as she lets go. It's not the same room as before. It's an apartment.
"Don't mention it." I tell her. "I couldn't let her kill you, I need you and you're not a complete without the others. So I just asked." She nods and leads me to a seat at the table.
"Can I help you with something?" She asks as she gets me some water. I yawn and thank her for it.
"I need some more of the prenatal stuff." I tell her before sipping.
"When was the last time you slept?" She asks me like a doctor.
"Yesterday afternoon." I tell her. "But I have things to do today." Eloise shakes her head.
"You need to sleep to heal. The protective pouch around the fetus was damaged and you need to rest and eat." I laugh.
"Running around at midnight and climbing aren't on the list?" I joke and she looks at me in horror.
"Of course not, Aundrea. You cannot do anymore of that. You need to rest." I roll my eyes.
"What is the worst thing that can happen?" I ask sarcastically.
"A lot. I'm not going to tell you again. You are fully aware of the problems that can arise." She shakes her head and takes in a deep breath. "I understand that you are Dauntless and you are not going to think most of the time before acting, but you need to at least think for your child. If you lose it than you will have still have problems." She tells me firmly. She is one of the only Erudites that have emotions. It's strange.
"Now, can I have some more prenatal?" I ask her and she nods.
"Sure how much do you need." She stands up and walks over to an isolated cabinet. Makes sense for and Erudite to have a supply of things at home.
"Full term." I tell her and she stops.
"You're planning on leaving." She states slowly before looking at me.
"Yes." I tell her. "I'm leaving and Uriah told me to take what I would possibly need out there." She sighs. "Mother doesn't know." I add.
"If that's the case, then I will have to leave you a moment." Eloise walks out of the room and shuts the door. I'm not worried about her telling just yet. She will make sure that she gives me some time to 'think' about it. Then she will tell her. So I sip the water and wait a few minutes before she comes back with a blue bag. I laugh.
"I have one from all but one faction now." I joke as she set it on the table. "Just missing Candor." I add and she sighs.
"In there is a full term amount of prenatal, some comfort medications like Anti acid, and some warm blankets." Eloise informs me. "I planned for this." I nod.
"I am Dauntless after all." I tell her with a smirk as I stand up and hug her. "Thank you." I whisper.
"You know I'm going to tell your mother." She says as I pull away.
"I expected it." I tell her. "You're going to wait until I set my mind on it though."
"Yes, I don't want to cause a problem that has a chance of not happening." She agrees with me.
"Thank you." I tell her again before leaving. Now I need clothes.
000
"Ann." I reach for my gun and pull it out.
"Back off." I mumble out as I hear something fall. I hold the gun out to the voice. "I'm aimed."
"I see that, Ann." That's my brother's voice. Slowly I drop the gun on the ground and open my eyes. After getting warm clothes, I feel asleep on Bass's bed. I was tired as hell and Uriah looked like he needed space and time with his brother. They were still talking as I walked in. I could have felt the tension in the room as I set the two bags down and left. I see Bass crouching in front of his bed with the gun at his feet. I blink a few times and notice a small red mark on his neck.
"You went to dauntless without me." I act hurt. "I would have loved to visit the both the bullets holes." I joke before sitting up and grabbing my gun again.
"Yeah, whatever." He mumbles. "When did you get them back?"
"Today after I got home. I talked to mom. Told her that I feel exposed without them and threw some things in there about Dad and she just dropped my Amity bag in my lap with everything in it." Bass nods and looks around. "I drop it off with Uriah so that not to bring attention to myself for carrying a bright red bag." I yawn and stretch.
"Smart move. Now let's go get Caleb." I wake up instantly.
"What?" I ask him. I didn't think of him. "He's on the third floor." I state and he nods.
"Yes, and we're going to get him and met up with the others." Bass says as I stand up and slip the gun in the waistband of my pants.
"Sounds good." I tell him with a smirk. "Could use some more running." He nods and we head out.
000
I walk with only a tight red shirt and black pants on as I have my jacket tied around my waist. My shoulders are rolled back and I'm walking with confidence behind Bass as he leads me to Caleb's cell. I watch as a guard stops him with a gun pressed to his shoulder.
"Where do you think you're going?" I roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest in annoyance. Bass just shakes the gun off of him.
"Don't point that thing at me. We're here on Evelyn's orders. We're going to see a prisoner." He tells him sharply.
"I didn't hear about any after-hour visits today." The man doesn't even look at me. Dumb ass.
"That's because she didn't want it on record." He lowers his voice and I groan.
"Come on. Can't you tell who we are, you jack ass?" I snap as I walk past Bass and over to the man. He is offended at first before seeing me. "You are stupid." I roll my eye.
"Chuck! Let them through." I don't have to look up to know its Therese. "That's Evelyn's children." I grimace at the man named Chuck.
"And I'm not patient." I deadpan. "This is the last place I want to be and you are keeping me here longer with your stupidity." I snap as I shove past him. Bass follows and glances at me once we turn the corner. "What?"
"You like to piss people off." He deadpans. "You should work on that."
"I have, but sometimes it's expected of you. Mother like daughter I guess." I tell him as we walk to the end of the hall to a woman.
"Hi, my name is Tobias Eaton and this is my sister, Aundrea. We're here to collect a prisoner, on orders of Evelyn Johnson." He speaks clearly. She removes a piece of crumbled paper from her pocket and fixes it the best she can.
"Name?" She asks boredly.
"Caleb Prior. 308a" Bass states as if he owns the place. Technically we do.
"Your Evelyn's children, Right?" she asks.
"Yeah.."
"Yes we are." I deadpan to cover Bass up. She walks over to the door and opens it.
"I guess I'm supposed to pretend I don't see what's you're about to do?" She asks tiredly.
"Yes." Bass says without missing a beat. I move to the wall and wait there.
"Do me a favor and put in a good word for me with Evelyn. I don't want so many night shifts." She tells Bass. If we are here that long. "The name's Drea."
"You got it." He says before walking in. Drea shoves the paper back into her pocket and walks back over to me. I lean on the wall that's on the other side of the door and she faces me.
"So you're the daughter?" She asks and I nod.
"Yes. Is there a problem?" I ask suspiciously.
"No, just heard a lot about you during the last few years. You look different than you did when you first came by." She says in a bored voice. Drea is just talking to fill the time.
"Yeah, I grew up." I tell her. "People tend to do that." I hear the sound of a chair lifting. "Got to go." I stand up and I hear Bass grunt and then Caleb runs by. I run and cut Bass off right before I turn to my side and hit him with my shoulder. Causing him to fall on his face and breaking his nose on the ground. I simply straddle him from behind and grab both of his wrists as he tries to fight. "Knock it off Caleb. I'm me." I tell him. At hearing my emotionless voice, he stops struggling. Bass walks over and kneels down.
"I had it, you know." Bass tells me as he places the plastic cuffs on.
"I was bored." I shrug my shoulders as I get off of him and let Bass help him up. There is blood all over him and I can't help but smirk. "You better be a fast learner, Caleb. This is going to get old fast." I tell him as I walk past him to the other hall. There is the emergence exit down the stairs. I open the door for my brother and Caleb and they walk through and go down the stairs. Once down, Bass knocks to see if Zeke is on the other side.
"No trouble with the guard?" He asks as he opens the door for us with a stupid grin on his face.
"No." Bass tells him.
"I figured Drea would be easy to get by. She doesn't care about anything." Zeke informs us as we walk through. He glances at me for a moment longer. He knows. Uriah told him.
"It sounded like she had to look the other way before." Bass says as he shoves Caleb.
"That doesn't surprise me. Is this Prior?" Zeke moves on.
"In the flesh." Bass smirks as I lean against the wall.
"Why is he bleeding?" Bass looks at me.
"Because he's and Idiot." He says proudly to me.
"I didn't know that idiocy caused people to just start spontaneously bleeding from the nose." Zeke jokes and I laugh.
"The poor soul thought he could out run him. So I sprung and knocked him to the ground." I gloat as Caleb looks to the ground. I didn't want him to die so I'm glad that he's coming with us. Bass wraps a jacket around his shoulders to conceal the binds.
"I think it's a new phenomenon." Bass adds. "The alley's clear?"
"Made sure of it." Zeke says as he hands him a gun. "Careful, it's loaded. Now it would be great if you would hit me so I'm more convincing when I tell then factionless you stole it from me." My eyes widen in excitement as he tells Bass that.
"You want me to hit you?" Bass asks for clarification.
"Oh, like you never wanted to. Just do it Four." Zeke deadpans. "Do it fast you pansycake." I smirk as Bass hits him in the jaw.
"Great." Zeke mumbles in pain before spiting on the ground.
"They know I'm with him." I state slowly, trying to hold back the smirk. "They would expect more than that because it's me and Four, together." Bass laughs and Zeke grimaces.
"She's asking if she can hit you as well." Bass says.
"I know, I'm not stupid." Zeke spits out. He stares at me for a moment. "Fine." He rolls his eyes and I deck him. Landing in the side of his face. He stumbles back. "Damn it." He mumbles.
"Now you got a black eye. Normally I would hit in the temple to knock you out, or in the groin." I tell him and he groans.
"Cheap shot. How did she get second place in stage one?" Zeke ask Bass as he holds his head.
"She didn't do cheap shots." He says. "And she didn't learn it from me." I smirk as Zeke mumbles something.
"Well, I guess that's it." He says.
"Guess so." Bass states. Best friends saying good bye.
"I probably won't see you again, will I? I mean, I know the others might come back, but you..." Zeke states. "Just seems like you'll be happy to leave it behind, that's all." I bite my lip ring and lean back against the wall.
"Yeah, you're probably right." Bass looks at his shoes. "There is a lot of memories I'm sure, Andy wants to get away from as well." I swallow hard as Zeke looks at me on that comment. "You sure you won't come?"
"Can't. Shauna can't wheel around where you guys are going, and it not like I'm going to leave her, you know?" He looks me in the eyes. His eye is starting to swell up. "Make sure Uri doesn't drink too much, Okay?" What?
"Yeah." Bass agrees.
"No I mean it." he looks at my brother. "Promise me you will look out for him?" His voice drops and sounds like Uriah when he's being serious.
"I promise." Bass says.
" I do too. Uriah will be taken care of." I promise him and Zeke nods at me. The both of them drag on silences.
"Let's just hug already." He tells Bass. I grab Caleb so they can hug. Best friends leaving each other. I look a Caleb and sigh. He seems upset. Bass silently thanks me and grabs him after hugging and I need to tell Zeke good bye too. I suddenly turn and hug my boyfriend's older brother, my arms around his neck.
"I'm going to miss your smart ass comments." I whisper to him as he slowly hugs me back.
"Same too you, Take care of Uriah and…" He doesn't continue. So I let go and wipe a tear out of my eye and he laughs. "I didn't know you loved me that much." Zeke says sarcastically. So I sock him in the arm.
"Of course I do. You have been friends with Four. I respect you." I tell him before another tear fall down my face. "Damn you." I turn and stock down the alley ahead of Bass and Caleb.
"I'll miss you." Bass says in a joking tone.
"You too, sweetie!" Zeke says in reply. "And you, Sexy."
"Zeke, you're gross." I laugh out as tears fall down my face. I can't turn and face them. The tears are embarrassing. I hear Zeke and Bass laugh as I untie my jacket and pull it on. Bass joins me in a few seconds. "I'll meet you at the train. Clear the way and all." Bass nods and I run ahead with a gun drawn. I doubt I'll use it. My feet are light on the pavement as I run. Something moves and I turn to find it and nothing. Am I making things up? I run until I get to the tracks. Then and only then I stop. Nothing else seemed out of place to me. So I wait until Bass gets here with an uncuffed Caleb.
"You know how to do this, right?" Bass asks him. "Get in the last car." Caleb takes off the jacket and I take it and pull it on. It's going to get colder.
"Yeah." Caleb tells him and the train gets closer.
"Someone might have been following you." I state and he nods.
"I saw it too." He says quietly. Good, I'm not seeing things. I start to bounce on my toes as the train gets closer. It's been so long since I did this last and Bass just shakes his head. Once it get's here, I let Bass and Caleb run and get in first. I run right behind them and swing into the last car as if I did this all my life. Dauntless. Pure Dauntless. I hold the rail and face inward I notice Bass and Tris kissing. I can't help but gag.
"I always love watching you do that." She says.
"Get another car if you're going to do that." I mumble and Tris smiles at me.
"Is this what you had planned?" Caleb asks sharply. "For her to be here when you kill me? That's..." Tris turns away from me and looks at Bass.
"Kill him?" She asks him more than me.
"Yeah, I let him think he was being taken to his execution," Bass says loudly. "You know, sort of like he did to you in Erudite headquarters."
"I… It's isn't true?" he asks.
"No, I saved your life, actually." He states dryly. "Might not want to thank me just yet. We're taking you with us. Outside of the fence." Caleb remains silent.
"Why is there blood on his shirt?" I smirk.
"Dumb ass hit him with a chair, so I threw him to the ground and he didn't brace himself." I brag and Tris only shakes her head before returning to Bass. So I man the door and watch everything fly by. I hate change, but that seems like the only thing I want for the last few years. Strange, I think. Tears fall down my face as I think of my memories being left here.
000
After awhile, Bass and I trade places. I don't think I can take the view anymore. So I lean against the far wall as everything goes by. Once I see Caleb go first, I run and jump off, Past Bass and Tris. He's going to run. I just know it. My feet hit the ground and my knees bend automatically and I turn and run after him with Bass flanking me. He grabs him and I stop to grab Caleb's shirt.
"Don't you dare do that again. You will be killed." I threaten as I pull out a gun and press it to his chest. "You know my aim. I could have shot you from the train." Caleb swallows. "Plus, you leave us, and my mother will kill you the moment she found you." He doesn't say a word as I let go and put the gun back. I don't know why I'm being so sharp with him, but I think it's the hormones. We walk back to Tris and I see Uriah and Christina there with a flashlight. Thank God.
"Not sure why an Erudite like you can't get it through his head, but you aren't going to out run either of us." Bass informs him in a dry tone.
"He's right." Uriah says. He seems better now. "Four's fast. Then it's me, and then it's Andy. So there is no way you're going to out run any of us, Nose." I raise an eyebrow at him in confusion.
"A what?" Christina is the one that asks.
"Nose." He touches his cute nose. "It's a play on words. Knows with a K. Knowledge, Erudite… get it? It's like Stiff." I roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest. Uriah, sometimes you're too corny.
"The Dauntless have the weirdest slang. Pansycake, Nose, is there a term for the Candor?"
"Of course." Uriah grins. "Jerks." I laugh as Christina pushes him hard. The flashlight falls from his hands and I grab it. That's when Bass takes the group and leads us to the rest. I hold the flash light with a smirk as Uriah walks to the back of the group to me. He hands me a jacket and takes the flashlight so I can put it on. Tori then gets our attention by waving her flashlight in the air.
"All right, Johanna and the trucks will be about a ten minute walk from here, so let's get going. And if I hear a word from anyone, I will beat you senseless. We're not out yet." She tells us. Uriah goes to grab my hand, but I can't help but clutch his arm. I hate the dark and he has the flashlight. We do our best to follow Tori as she leads us, but I'm too cold and scared to care about anything else. So I let Uriah lead me as I slowly start to shake. I don't know what to expect. Are we going to die out there?
"Just breathe." I hear Uriah whisper into my ear. That's when I hear the guns go off. Uriah pulls me in front of him as I hear Bass shout.
"Split up! Run!" Uriah drags me to the side and I feel his hand on my stomach, protecting it as we run together. His other hand presses one of my guns in my hands.
"I'm turning off the light." I only make one sound to tell him okay. The light turns off and we keep running. More gun fire, but nothing hits either of us. Uriah turns me to the side and the gun shoots seem to get louder. Uriah moves me to the other side of him and he grabs my hand. It's easier to run this way. I push myself faster and faster and Uriah keeps up so he can direct me.
"We have to find Tris and Bass." I tell him as we run.
"No time, they will make it there." He says as he pushes himself faster. "I have to get you safe." I let go of his hand and stop dead in my tracks. I'm going to find my brother. I turn and run towards the loudest set of guns. "Aundrea!" Uriah cries and turns on the light behind me. That's when I hear the cry that haunt me.
"Bass." I say in a normal voice, it's too loud for it to be heard. That's okay. "Tobias Eaton."
"Ann?" I turn to the left and run as fast as I can. I barely see the person that shot him and I aim my gun as I run. A factionless. I shoot a few times and the person falls to the ground, dead. I get to my brother and grab his gun. "Thanks." I nod and Bass shoots the best he can with his other arm at someone else.
"We're a team after all." I smirk. "Let's go." We turn and run away from the guns. I shot a few times and hit my target every time. More people I have killed. I shake my head and I hear Bass hiss with pain.
"I was grazed, that's all." He says.
"I heard." I mumble. "Sorry, I know how it feels." I tell him as we break out into a run.
"Andy." We both hear Uriah catch up to us and run in pace with us. "You two okay?"
"I'm fine. Four is shot in the arm." I tell him as Bass tries to focus on running.
"Almost there." He says. I refuse to take Uriah's hand as we run because I need to focus on Bass right now. We begin to see the headlights of a truck and I decide to leave them to get whoever it is ready, or take them out.
"Stay here." I tell Uriah and start running at full speed. I get closer and see Cara, Caleb and Peter. "Four was shot in the arm." I shout as I get closer. Cara moves quickly and grabs the first aid kit. Once I get there, I'm out of breath. I stop and hunch forward. Shouldn't be running. I wait there until Bass and Uriah get here. Then I help him on hood of the car so Cara can help him. I then try to breathe again.
"You shouldn't have done that." Uriah says as he places a hand on my back. I shake my head.
"My brother and I are a team." I breathe out. I move and hang onto the door of the truck and try to see if that helps. It does. "I'm going to have his back."
"But you need to be careful." Uriah's voice is quiet as he touches my shoulder. "Please." I slowly nod. This normally doesn't happen to me. Being this out of breath.
"Yes, I promise I will try better." I tell him. "I think I should lie down." He nods and helps me to the ground and I lay on the grass and he crouches next to me.
