"Reid?" The solace and excitement was clear in Morgan's voice. He looked the younger man in his intent beaming eyes. Hidden beneath this strange new exterior, was the real Reid?
Docter Perelli moved from around the wheel chair and crouched beside the bed, her hand resting on Reid's thigh. "Reid, do you understand what I am saying, please respond if you do.
The lady with the piercing blue eye had appeared again, and immediately Reid dropped his gaze. He wanted Morgan. He remembered Morgan, he knew the connection they shared. Instead of the jumble incoherent thoughts his mind had become, he could focus and his thinking became clear. But only for Morgan.
He was aware of the woman raising and moving away from the bed. She was replaced by the crumpled form of his friend. Reid looked up, smiling.
His friend smiled back and slowly moved to take Reid's hand in his own. "Hi Reid," He said. "Do you remember me?" Morgan realized as soon as he asked that it was a stupid question. When he had first arrived, immediately Reid had perked up and called him "Morgan!".
Reid gave an exaggerated sigh, emphasizing the sag of his shoulders and the roll of his eyes. "By golly gee, why would I call you Morgan if I didn't remember you?" The remark was simple, but left the team stunned. This didn't seem like the old Reid.
Slowly Morgan mumbled, still shocked, "Sorry."
The doctor stepped in, thinking this was her chance to get some information and asked, "Reid, how are you feeling? How does your head feel?"
The doctors worlds repeated in his head. She was asking him something? He tied to focus and understand, what each of the words meant. His brow furrowed and his focused hardened. Why couldn't he understand what she was asking him? It seemed so simple; he felt like he should know, like somewhere in the back of his mind he did but he couldn't seem to grasp to that thought. His graze rose to her face, but he said nothing.
The doctor looked over at Morgan and gave him an encouraging smile. He eyes suggested for him to try to talk with Spencer again. Morgan nodded, his shock clearly subsided now and turned back onward Reid.
"Hey kid, how are you feeling?" Morgan said, giving him a warm smile. Again like before Reid's mind filled with a sudden clarity. His world seemed to come into view. Reid cocked his head at those words. Did he understand what Morgan had said?
Surprised at his own answer Reid replied with a smile,"I feel like I'm...spinning. The armadillo keeps telling me to get off the swing, but I don't wanted to so I don't." The he leaned in close to Morgan and brought his hand up to hide what he was saying. Despite this gesture, with brought obvious pain to Reid as he groaned slightly, he whispered loudly enough for the others to hear, "I don't like the armadillo, but don't tell him." He dropped back in his bed looking more relaxed. Morgan, as well as the rest of the team, who heard what the young genius had just said was speechless. They all looked at Reid with frightened expressions on their faces. All thinking, what? Armadillo? Where did that even come from? The accident had changed him. Spencer was different, much different.
Oblivious to the others Reid peered toward the ceiling. He now wore a blank expression. Morgan watched his friend sadly. The team's relieved faces had disappeared.
The team desperately looked at Dr. Perelli, who just shook her head and sighed. As she started to leave, she gestured for them to follow her out side, leaving Morgan and Reid alone. Quietly, she shut the door behind her.
Emily was the first to speak, her voice was trembling, "Why is he acting like this?"
"We need the truth," Gideon demanded.
"Dr. Reid has brain damage. His condition is so unpredictable. Realistically I had thought that he wouldn't have awoken from the coma at all, or even have basic functions if he did eventually. But he did, and is showing signs of recognition, basic functions, emotions and so many other things. I did not anticipate this kind of recovery. Actually I have never seen anything like this before. His physical condition is relatively fine and he will recover from all those injuries. But as for his mental status only time will tell." Dr. Perelli gave them all sympathetic looks as they absorbed what she had so-bluntly said. Her face seemed to brighten slightly. "This is good news, this could mean that he will recover better then I anticipated."
"Thank you," Hotch said, furrowing his brow as conduction clouded his countenance. "Why is Reid responding so well with Morgan, and no one else?"
The Doctor paused before answering, "Like I said, this type of outcome after this kind of accident, is so different from what I have seen before. In my view, I've seen this type of connection in people with autism; they establish this strong connection with someone they trust, love, etc. and literally communicate everything with that person. They find themselves functioning, almost..normally. Reid's behavior is similar to this." She gazed behind her through the window of the hospital room. The team followed her gaze and saw Morgan and Reid having, what seemed like a normal conversation. They didn't know what they were saying or if it even made any sense, but it reminded them of the old days, of the old Reid. That thought making that all smile sadly. Dr. Perelli looked back to the team and proceeded to speak.
"Considering both Dr. Reid and Agent Morgan have limited physical damage, I will be discharging them both within the week. I advise you keep close watch on Dr. Reid. At any time he seems to be acting different"-she seemed to regret her choice of words- "I mean, distressed, do not hesitate to bring him in. Are we clear?"
"Yes." They were desperately wanted to go back in the room and see what Morgan and Reid were talking about, but the doctor held up her hand, signally for them to stop. Apparently she still wasn't done.
"For him to have a'full recovery' I suggest him being around all of you. Similar actions, tasks, and surrounding might help his brain remember and adjust to his old life. Treat him as if he is the same man, he had been before. But do not over work or over expose him to too much. Also, I want him to come back here every 2-3 days so I can check his condition. Take good care of him," She paused, chuckled softly. "You all seem to be like such a close, loving team, a family even, I know that you will take good care of him." With that Dr. Perelli excused herself and walked away.
The team started to reenter the room, but Gideon stayed behind. His eyes drifted to Reid. He was alive, and in exceptional physical condition considering what he had lived through, but he was different. It hurt to look at this man..the one he had always considered his son, and not really see him anymore. Dr. Perelli was right, Gideon didn't recognize the man sitting in the room. He didn't know if he ever would. But that didn't mean he would stop trying. He would never give up on Reid. None of the team would. He was family; and he never gave up on the people he loved.
Please Review.
Hope this chapter was alright, not one of the best. It was difficult to pull my ideas together on this one. Regardless, I hope that you enjoyed!
