Chapter 7~Blood Buddies!
Night fall came quickly. By the time I noticed, the suns last rays were disappearing into darkness. I stood from the swing in the playground and troughed home, exhausted from my jumbled and confused feelings.
I opened my door, feeling slightly stupid for leaving it open. You know, burglars and shit could have gone in. Not that I think Natsu can't handle himself or anything. I entered my apartment, hearing the television on, the cracking in the air telling me that whatever had been on had now finished. The cough was facing the TV, so I could see the back of a mop of pink hair peeking over the couch. The TV was black and white fuzz. I walked to the front of the TV, staring at a slightly disarranged Natsu. He looked down heartened, tired and… worried? His eyes flickered up at me, surprise and relief crossing along his features.
There was a silence between us.
I looked away, trying to find the right words, "Natsu, you…" I broke the deafening silence between us, "You… you were right." I admitted, looking in his eyes, my right hand holding my left arm, "I have been so consumed with the idea that Vampires were horrible creatures. I thought of them as heartless and soulless and merciless. All because of my past and what only a few did to my family."
He didn't make a sound, waiting for me to continue, "Natsu, I want to make sure that the conclusion I have come up with is the right one. Can I… Can I feel you pulse again?"
He wasn't hesitant, "Sure."
Gingerly I moved forward, leaning my knee on the edge of the lounge, placing my hand on his chest, right over his heart. He was harm, his heart beat at a lengthy rhythm beneath my fingertips. I pulled away slightly. Natsu flinched.
"Sorry." I whispered.
I placed my hand over his heart again.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
I counted them, my head becoming dizzy with realisation. The Vampire I had tried to kill was a man. I pulled away and stood, tripped over my feet and fell over for the second time today, flat on my rear.
"Luce, you ok?" Natsu got up, holding out a hand.
I nodded, rubbing my butt in annoyance. He sat back down when I didn't take his hand. I didn't think I could get up anyway.
I looked at him seriously, "I think we should talk. I have a lot of questions, and you have answers."
He merely shrugged, "Shoot."
"You eat normal foods right?"
"Yeah." He snorted like it was obvious.
"What are Royals and the 'normal' vampires?"
"We have many classes in the Vampire Society. I am a Royal, meaning I was born a Vampire by Vampire parents. We have the ability to change Humans to Vampires."
"How?" I interrupted.
"Ah, well, you sorta swap blood."
"What? Like a blood transfusion?"
"Something like that. Anyway, let me continue! The ones changed, we like to call, Underlings. They are controlled much like you but unlike you they are dead. They also, depending on the Underling you meet, can be very bloodthirsty. I guess that's why you hate us so much."
"Hated." I corrected.
"What?"
"I have decided I won't discriminately just hate a whole race. I only will hate those who killed my parents and anyone else who takes lives so easily," I eyed him suspiciously, "You haven't killed anyone due to blood lust, have you?"
He rolled his eyes annoyed, "No Lucy, I haven't. I have control over my blood lust. I only take what I need."
I nodded, understanding, "There is another thing I much tell you." He perked up interested, "I've decided that you're not such a bad person."
He grinned that childish grin of his, fist pumping the air. Then he looked at me seriously, "Does that mean you like me?"
I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms, "Don't get your hopes up, Pinky."
"IT'S SALMON!"
I laughed, "Whatever, Pinky!"
He pouted, crossing his arms. I waited for him to say something of even crack a smile.
"Pinky?"
Nothing.
"Pinkyyyyy?"
Still nothing.
"Oi! Pinky!"
And he still gave me the silent treatment. I shrugged.
"I was going to tell you something important, but you can forget it."
The pout was replaced by genuine interest. I smirked, got ya!
I stood up.
"I want to try being friends." I said, holding out my hand to him.
He raised an eyebrow, "Try?"
I scowled and rolled my eyes, "Can we be friends, Natsu?"
He narrowed his eyes in thought, before crossing his arms mockingly, "What's the magic word?"
"Please?"
He grinned, grabbed my hand and shook it roughly, "Defiantly, Luce. I would love to be your friend."
I was the first to let go, sitting back down with a sign. I felt as though something had been lifted off my shoulders, a weight from all my years of discriminately hating Vampires. Natsu grinned at, as if reading my thoughts.
I decided I would trust this idiot of a Vampire.
"Hey Luce, you wanna watch something?" He asked.
I shook my head, "And what? Go through that sort of torture again."
"It's wasn't that bad," He grumbled, crossing his arms, "I was going to let you choose this time."
"Thanks Natsu, but I really need a shower and I have school tomorrow." I replied, standing up, "You put on whatever you want."
He grinned and grabbed the remote, with an excitement sparkle in his eyes, as he began flipping through the channels. I only go to the door before the called out to me.
"Luce!" I turned around.
He looked at me over the couch, grinning childish like.
"Want me to wash your back?"
I grit my teeth, How can he say that with such a straight face?!
"No Natsu! God, you're such a pervert!" I stomped away to the bathroom, blushing a furious red.
…
The bath had been warm and comforting, so I stayed in until my fingers and toes turned into prunes before deciding that I didn't like the look of prunes. Not one bit.
Grabbing a fluffy towel, I wrapped it around me and padded to my room, just across from my room. I dressed quickly and began drying my hair. I thought about the pyromaniac downstairs. I bet he was watching some sappy movie and balling his eyes out. It cracked me up.
He really is just like me. I'm so glad I see it so clearly.
Master's words echoed through my mind, invading it.
"Lucy, what does your heart want?"
I had thought I knew what I needed, not what I wanted. I thought I knew everything, I had thought the path I was taking was the right one.
"I know what I want. I want to be the strongest Hunter, stronger than Gildarts. And then, when I'm strong enough, I'll kill ever Vampire in existence."
"But Lucy. Is it what it needs?"
The one man had stumped me. He was right to ask that question. I had no idea what it needed. Thanks to Natsu, I now know what I needed. I needed to let go of that anger and hate and look at the bigger picture. I smiled.
For the first time since he entered my house, I was actually glad he was here. I still didn't fully trust him, or feel totally comfortable around the blood sucker, but I was determined to try.
I troughed downstairs, stomach grumbling as I remembered I had not eaten all day. I opened the cupboard and pulled out the coco-pops and made myself a bowl, walking into the lounge room where Natsu was watching Edward Scissorhands.
I sat down next to him, "Ooh, I love Jonny Depp!"
He laughed, "So do I. If I were gay- Which I'm not- I would seriously go gay for him."
I agreed, "As would I."
We looked at each other, "That makes no sense."
"I know."
We cracked up laughing.
"Anyway, Natsu?"
He wiped a tear away from our laughing fit, "Yeah?"
"Have you even had a shower since you came here?"
He looked away, "O-of course I have!"
I glared at him seeing though his lies, "Shower. Now."
He crossed his arms like child, "NO! I don't wanna!"
I put my bowl down, grabbed him by the ear and began dragging his arse up the stairs into the bathroom, "You stink Natsu. You're having a shower weather you like it or not!"
He grinned playfully as I opened the bathroom door, wincing slightly as I tugged on his ear, "Can't wait to undress me, can you?"
I yanked on his ear and pushed him into the bathroom. He yelped and stumbled into the room, falling flat on his face. I closed the door behind me.
"Take a shower and leave you clothes in the hamper by the sink. I'll wash your clothes for you. There are folded towels on the shelves. Help yourself."
As I walked away I heard him yell, "Wanna wash my back, Luce?!"
Ooh, jumping the gun there, don't you think Natsu? Lucy might just find a way to kill you if you keep it up!
