Chapter 7: Shi no Shisha
She was surrounded in darkness, not the usual darkness of the astral plane and there wasn't any orbs of light flying around. Luciana was scared she could manage her visions, she grew up dealing with them. But when her brain was the one torturing her she couldn't quite manage it.
The space she was standing in started morphing, until it turned to a forest. She felt the cold wind hitting her and she hugged herself to keep her warmth then she looked around her. The trees were dark and ominous, the moon was hidden behind dark clouds. It wasn't Torch Reality's forest, Luciana was sure of it but this place seemed really familiar to her.
Her feet started getting cold and wet, making her look down but she couldn't se any thing since it was pitch black. The clouds in the sky moved away letting the moon cast her silver light onto the floor.
It was covered in a white blanket of snow. Luciana's eyes widened in panic, she raised her feet from the ground and shook the snow from them then she put them down again covering them in snow once more. Her panic grew, and she started trembling but not from the cold, from fear.
-"No, no, no!"she whispered.
Memories she longed to forget flooded her mind. Memories of blood red snow. She heard a little girl giggling in the distance and paled. The familiar voice made her remember a six years old little girl with short, straight, light brown hair and honey like eyes, wearing a light pink kimono with green floral patterns and a toothy grin on her face.
She ran away from the giggling voice, the cold wind seeping thru her clothes, she halted her steps when she arrived to a path leading to a village. The houses weren't illuminated, like all the villagers were sleeping, thought Luciana knew better.
They were sleeping, yes, but it was an eternal sleep.
She felt a cold hand clutching the hem of her skirt. She looked down and was met by honey like eyes, she gasped and jumped away from the little girl who appeared next to her.
The skin of the six years old child was showing under her tattered pink kimono, it was of an unhealthy blue with deep wounds all over her body and her once lively eyes were dull and blank.
Luciana fell to her knees tears falling down her cheeks "Ayane-chan" she whispered. The little girl just looked at her and Luciana felt multiple cold little hands gripping her legs she looked down and saw them sticking of the snowy ground their skin the same color as Ayane's. All of a sudden she heard the voices of little girls singing a song.
" Pure white snow
Pure white snow
Tainted crimson long ago

Ayane started walking to Luciana, she lifted her hand and wept the tears of her face then she steped away.
-" You lied to me ' Luciana-nee-chan' he found me an I died, it hurt me so much... Why did you let him do it nee-chan".
Fresh tears fell down her face and she hid her face in her hands.
-" Mai" she heard someone calling her from the distance" Mai ... MAI".
The said girl shot up in her bed with a start, she looked around and saw bright blue eyes gazing at her with worry.
She clutched Gene's shirt hiding her face in it and continued crying, the boy just took her in his arms and rubbed her back in circles soothingly " Sshh, I'm here now, calm down M-Lucia". She looked at him with her puffy red eyes " You can call me Mai if you want you know as long as we are alone" she said between sobs. A smile graced his lips.
-" As you wish Mai-chan" he said.
-" How long was I out?" she asked.
-" Two days" he answered.
-" Then my mom..."she started.
-"Yes she knows everything, she stayed with you all the time but I convinced her to take her place so she could rest. Thought she said she would castrate me if I touched you" he stated shuddering at the end making Mai giggle. "Why were you crying?" he asked her.
-" I had a nightmare, that's all nothing supernatural" she said hiding her face in his chest again, then she immediately sat up" that reminds me I had a dream we should probably go and talk to that narcissist brother of yours".
-" Yeah the narcissist you love so much" he said with a smirk only to be hit scare in the face with a pillow.
-" Gene-no-baka" she muttered and went to the bathroom.
She took a quick shower and got dressed then went back to her room, she found Gene lying on her bed, he sat up and waited until she strapped her katana to her waist. They left the room walking side by side in the corridors and Luciana turned to Gene.
-"What time is it?"she asked
-"Five in the afternoon"he answered smirking when he heard her muttering about being killed by her mother.
It took them no time to arrive to base. Naru was sitting by the monitors his father and Bou-san by his side because of the number of monitors. Lin was typing on his ever-present laptop, while Luella and Madoka were looking through some files a frustrated look on both their faces 'They probably didn't find anything about the school' thought Luciana. None of them saw them enter.
-"Where are Jhon and Ayako?"asked Gene.
They jumped when they heard his voice making him laugh while his twin brother glared. When Luella's eyes fell on Luciana she smiled softly.
-"I'm glad you're feeling better dear" she said and Luciana smiled at her.
-"So where are they?" asked Gene again.
-"Miss Shèng thought that Hara-san should stay with her since Lin has other things to do and wouldn't be able to take care of her, Father Brown and Matsuzaki-san went to check on her" answered Naru.
Luciana flopped on the couch after his explanation and Gene sat down next to her"I had a dream"she said and Naru had the impression of seeing his brown haired assistant sitting on that couch.
-« Do tell », he said in his usual cold tone.
Luciana told him everything about her dream making sure that she didn't leave a single thing out. Naru looked thoughtful for a moment and exchanged a glance with his father who turned to Bou-san.
-"Osamu-san is still in the library would you mind telling him what we have found out?" asked Martin.
-"Of course professor" he answered leaving base.
Once he was out Luciana looked at Luella her face void of emotions. She took a strand of her silvery hair and started twirling it around her finger, Gene who was sitting next to her frowned.
-"Mrs. Davis …" started Luciana.
-"Call me Luella please" she said smiling warmly.
-"Luella… How do you know so much about witches and about a dark spell like the Anima Crinem?" asked the silver haired witch.
-"Common knowledge" she answered her smile turning from warm to nervous.
-"What are you hiding Luella? Because if you want it hidden from my mother you have to spit it out" stated Luciana.
The smile fell completely from Luella's face and she looked at Luciana cautiously.
-"Mother?" asked Naru who had been watching the conversation curiously even thought it was hidden behind his mask.
-"You can trust her with whatever it is mom" said Gene with an encouraging smile.
-"I'm from the Sangi Lys clan" she stated making Luciana narrow her eyes.
-"The Sangi Lys clan?" asked Madoka.
-"It's one of the main witch clans" explained Lin shocked.
-"You're a witch?" asked Gene astonished he had never seen his mother use magic after all.
-"You don't have an ounce of magic in you" stated Luciana her voice dangerously low; she didn't like being lied to.
-"I was the Head's daughter…" started Luciana.
Luciana face softened and her eyes held understanding.
-"You have committed an Unforgivable haven't you?" she stated.
-"An Unforgivable?" asked the twins at the same time.
Luella looked down to hide her sadness but what she felt was obvious.
-"Witches have a set of rules that they have to follow, the Unforgivables are three rules of these. If you go against one of those rules then there is no going back you will be exiled, striped of your magic, imprisoned or killed. Even the head of the house could not intervene at that time and there is no way for you to be forgiven for what you did; hence the name." said Martin while sitting by his wife's side.
Luciana looked at them for a moment and smiled sadly «You committed the first Unforgivable" she stated then sighed " I understood the second and third rule but I always wondered why we should follow the first one".
-"What are the rules?"asked Naru.
Luciana looked at Luella and the woman nodded" A witch or wizard shall not have the right to marry a mortal with no psychic powers.
A witch or a wizard shall not show their magic to a mortal with no psychic powers unless he or she is a hunter.
A witch or a wizard shall not give their magic to a mortal with or without psychic powers" stated the silver haired witch.
-"Wait so mom was stripped from her magic and probably exiled because she married dad? And what the hell is a hunter?" asked Gene clearly angry.
-"Calm down Eugene" said Martin calmly.
The said boy turned to his father and when he saw the barley hidden sadness he calmed down, and turned to Luciana his brother doing the same.
-"A hunter is a mortal who has the duty to protect people from the dangers of the paranormal world, the SPR can be seen as a group of hunters since you protect people from ghosts."she explained.
-"Alexandra?"asked Madoka.
Everyone turned to her since they had forgotten she was there, then they turned their attention to Luciana once again.
-"Yes"she said"The Romannov family are all hunters. There is something I still don't understand" she stated looking at Luella" why have they taken your magic and not just exiled you the Sangi Lys clan was always proud of it's magic's users?".
A look of pain settled itself on the woman's face and she shut her eyes close" I was pregnent...Martin and I were married in secret...I was planning on running away with him...But I had forgotten to cast a concealment charm to hide my baby's magic signature...My father felt it and he cast an abortion spell on me killing my baby...He then exiled me and took my magic as well as the ability to have a child...He said he didn't want me to have a 'tainted' child" she said sobbing, Martin sat next to her and held her in his arms.
The sadness that the professors were feeling didn't prevent them for feeling the decreasing of temperature in the room or the crackling of electricity in the air and they turned to their sons. Madoka and Lin who had felt it too turned as well.
The twins were looking murderous their eyes glowing with fury, PK was flowing around them freely. The temperature dropped a lot more until everyone could see their breath and they all turned to the silver haired witch. Luciana's hair was floating around her face her eyes glowing with magic a blood red circle around each pupil.
-"They did what?" she said through gritted teeth.
Alexandra was lying by the indoor pool her long curly hair in the water. Her right palm was facing the ceiling a snake made of fire was floating above it slithering in circles and hissing. The young hunter seemed to be thinking her eyes distant like she was remembering something.
-"Malyutka!*"(little one) called a woman with waist length orange hair.
-"Mama!"exclaimed a five years old little girl who looked exactly like the woman, and trew herself in her arms.
-"Chto ty delayesh' v odinochestve v svoyey komnate Aleksandra?"(What are you doing alone in your room Alexandra?) asked the woman.
-"Ya igral"(i was playing)said the child grinning.
-"S tem, chto malen'kiy odin?"(with what little one?)she asked seeing as there were no toys around.
-"Smotri!"(look!)she said exitedly while opening her hand and letting her mother see a butterfly made of fire and the said woman paled.
-"Nikogda ne pozvolyayte tvoy otets videt' ty eto delayesh'"(Never let your father see you doing this )she ordered and her daughter nodded.
-"YA sdelal chto-to ne tak?"(Did i do something wrong?)she asked with unshed tears and her mother shook her head and hugged her.
-"Wow"said a voice bringing her out of her memory.
Alexandra turned around and saw Yasu and Bou-san by the door and closed her palm making the snake immediately disappear.
-"You didn't have to do that" said Bou-san with a pout.
-"What are you doing here?"she asked.
-"We were going back to base when we saw the door open and wondered who would go for a swim in winter" he said.
-"So you found something?" she asked.
Yasu adjusted his glasses over his nose making them catch the light and gave her a blinding smile"Nope!"he answered and she giggled" why are you here? I thought that people who could use pyrokinesis hated water".
-"I do, but I hate my hair too so it's not aproblem"she stated.
Yasu was going to ask her why but he looked behind her and paled. Alexandra seeing this got up and turned around. In the water was the body of Mary Jerrard.
They didn't take too long to arrive before the door to base but they found Yin, Camille, Ayako, John and Masako by the door as well.
-"What's the problem?" asked Bou-san.
-"PK and magic" said Yin opening the door with her card.
They found Luciana sitting next to Gene her eyes closed trying to control her temper while Naru's mask was sliding into place and Gene was trying to calm down.
-"What happened?"asked Camille.
But before Luciana could answer, the head of the Muneris clan stepped in worried, she ran to her daughter's side, knelt down in front of her and cupped her cheeks in her hands.
-"Are you alright sweetheart?"she asked and Luella paled.
-"Yes mama I am" she said opening her eyes and smiling" you know that if I overuse my magic it can lash out after I wake up" .
-"Speaking about that, do you know how much I was worried child?! or do you actually like doing it?" said Aria standing up and glaring at her daughter.
-"You know that I couldn't just let Gene die or a three tailed demon wolf running wild in the school grounds" she said.
Her mother's eyes softened and she took her in her arms"Just don't scare me like that again dearest".
-"Are you feeling well?"asked Luciana turning to Masako who nodded and hid her mouth behind the sleeve of her kimono.
Her hand was slaped away by Yin who glared at her" Stop doing that it's annoying" she ordered and the jinchuriki nodded.
Alexandra walked to Yin catching everyone's attention and took the two Sais keeping the Chinese girl's hair in place letting the red strands fall like a crimson waterfall.
-"Would you cut my hair?"she asked a look of disgust crossing her face.
The only reaction of Yin was raising an eyebrow and she took a Sai and made Alexandra sit in front of her and she started cutting her hair.
-"What's with the sudden decision to cut your hair?"asked Luciana .
-"It was in a pool where a dead body was floating"she answered.
-"Whose body Alexandra?"asked Aria.
-"Mary Jerrard our history teacher"she stated her voice dripping in disgust about the woman in question.
-"Her secret...?"asked Martin.
-"Probably"she answered" she drowned her son because he had Pk she thought he was a devil's child and no one ever knew what she did not even her husband." she said.
The silence that followed her statement was deafening no one even to move they couldn't understand how a mother could kill her child like this.
-"Humans can be no better than monsters" said Aria who had sat down besides her daughter.
-"Witches as well mother"stated Luciana and her mother looked at her wondering what she meant.
-"Miss Piercent..."started Lin.
-"Call me Luciana please"she said.
-"Luciana... How is it that you could seal that youkai in Hara-san without dying? I presume that its because of your katana but I have never heard of such a blade"he stated.
Everyone turned to her mother as well since she had been asking herself the same question, while the council members tensed. Luciana stilled and her face became blank, she clutched the katana tightly in her hands.
Bou-san who was watching the katana closely gasped and paled"It's the Shi ni Shisha isn't it?"he asked and it was Ayako's and Masako's turn to pale.
Naru looked at Luciana who didn't seem to have any reaction to the name but he saw her clutching the katana more tightly"The Shi no Shisha?"he asked.
Gene who had heard the legend while he was in Japan was the one to answer casting a worried look at his sister in everything but blood"Legend says that when a soul is drowning in deep despair it will wall to Lady Death herself and if worthy enough she will give to that soul a blade the 'Shi no Shisha', a katana forged from hundreds of the most evil souls from the depths of hell. The price of wielding such a sword is only known by the wielder. And if not controlled then the blade shall bring only suffering to the soul." he stated.
No one really knew what to say after that and they all sat in silence.
-"You have to get rid of it dear it will only cause you pain and it is dangerous to you as well as our clan"said Aria.
-"You're always so worried about our clan now aren't you not your children"she said icily and got up from the couch her mother following her.
-"Of course not I'm worried for you but it will be a danger for our clan as well"stated Aria.
-"Of course..." said Luciana venom dripping from her voice, she unsheathed the katana and held it to her mother's throat.
Gasps escaped the mouths of everyone present, Alexandra whose hair now reached her shoulders got up and aimed her gun at Luciana her eyes held worry in them she didn't want to shoot her 'sister' but she was a hunter and it was her duty she only hoped that Luciana could control her temper.
-"Tell me mother, what could have made me fall in such a despair that Death herself would hear me?"she asked.
-"Lucas..."whispered her mother eyes wide.
-"Yes Lucas who died because you were too occupied with our clan to go with us on that case when you wouldn't even let us go to simpler cases alone..."
-"I didn't know that he would die" she said sorrow filling her voice but the red circle that was around the pupil of her daughter's eyes only seemed to spread wider.
-"I had to go through the balancing ritual like I did to Gene you felt that didn't you Lucas had used the Book of Dead to place the balancing seal on me as I did for Gene isn't that the reason why you are here on the first place".
-"I thought Lucas's powers would have been enough to protect you both"her mother said in that same sorrowful tone.
-"We were twins, connected twins when I was wounded he was too when I was in pain he was too when I lost my powers after the ritual he did too!"she screamed" but no you didn't even think about that right?".
-"I ..I "she started.
-"Save it" said Luciana tears sliding down her face while her eyes took their original color back.
Alexandra put her gun down and Luciana sheathed the katana and ran out of base.
