Hello again! Told you I was working on some lines this weekend, didn't expect to do enough for almost 2 Chapters though xD
I also am working on a real title image. With Yugi/Vergil, the Voice, Yami Yugi and some other suprises that will appear later on... I will probably finish it when visiting my family. Also, I won't have Internet for a while, maybe I can upload some new things in an Internet Café though.
Also sketched around Yugi's new appearance described in this chapter, I will inform you as soon as I upload them on dA.
Anyways as always, please tell me if you find any grammatical and/or spelling errors. Thank you!
Chapter 7: The blue knight
The night was surprisingly dreamless. Yugi had to wake up early next morning. He was still somewhat sleepy from the events of last night but it couldn't be helped. Their plane was taking off this afternoon.
Additionally, he made the horrifying discovery that, overnight, his clothes didn't fit him anymore. It was hard enough to get out of the pajamas, but trying to get his leather pants over his legs was a futile endeavor. Yugi failed to ignore the steady laughter coming from the Pharaoh, only intensifying when he accidentally ripped a huge hole in said pants while trying to pull them up. He told him to cut it out and realized that his height wasn't the only thing that changed.
His vocal cords seem to have increased in size, voice edging to a rich tenor. Looking into the mirror, his features had hardened, Eyes looking smaller in comparison to his now less round head. Regarding Yami's standards, he still looked adorable, which the latter promptly informed him about. To Yugi's disappointment, the thrown pants flew right through him.
He'd never seen an expression like this on his foster mother's face. Awed, quite shocked, definitely speechless. She slowly approached him, not believing her own eyes. Then she almost screamed, what the hell happened to him, what kind of sorcery was responsible for her little Yugi to turn into a grown man overnight. Grandpa helped in calming her down, carefully detaching her from the death hug she gave Yugis frame. He didn't seem that surprised by his Grandsons change. Old people and their instincts.
So, Yugi took clothes which covered him up mostly and didn't shred into pieces when he put them on (baggy pants, way too short for him but at least had enough room for his now long and more pronounced legs, together with a blue shirt with Kaiba Corp Logo that barely covered half his midriff. Did his sword training in the soul room affect his real body? It was a gift Mokuba had sent him a long time ago. Wasn't it 2 sizes too big?) and hurried to the next clothes store.
He didn't have the time to look out for stylish outfits and definitely couldn't ask his friend, Niko, the flamboyant shopkeeper of a leather specialist store, to craft him those custom made leather jeans which he liked to wear. Said man was shocked seeing Yugi's sudden new height. He immediately took out his measuring tools to determine just how much the boy had grown... 1.73m (5.6 ft)
He told Yugi that he aleady knew at first glance that the little boy still had a lot inside of him. Yugi blushed at that, his dark half couldn't hide a snicker. Niko was eager to make something new for his favorite little customer. Well... not so little anymore. Yugi explained that he would travel to Egypt this afternoon and politely declined. Niko didn't give up that easily. If he didn't have time to craft him something amazing, he at least wanted to give Yugi something fitting from his stock. Disappearing in the back, Niko rummaged through the assortment of leather wares for something special.
A green jacket? No, too small. Also green didn't fit Yugis hair. A red coat! It was modern and just the right size. The color accentuated his features well, though the last time he tried to sell something red to Yugi said boy claimed that red was a terrible color and he would never wear it on his own accord.
But then Niko remembered another new feature of his friend. Light, silver blue eyes... The leather craftsman continued on in his search. Then he found it... a long, azure blue leather coat with golden lines framing it's outlines and the arms. Golden buttons adorned the front. A white, vine shaped pattern gave the coat an extravagant, royal touch. At the back, the coat was parted into three flaps. It may be old fashioned... also it would probably slightly scrape the ground while he wore it. As long as Yugi didn't have another sudden height increase. Tough in that case it would probably fit him perfectly. Niko remembered when he made the coat... he thought of old times, a knight in the pale moonlight... Call him sappy but he loved imagining stories while working.
Little Yugi, grown into a tall man, a blue, shining knight, defender of the world. Standing in the rain, hair clinging to his face... Ok, ok, enough of those fantasies. Niko already knew that he found what he sought for.
After Yugi tried it on, he too felt something special. It was different to all the clothes he wore before, not the style he loved sporting all the time prior. Though while wearing it, he seemed to hear a faint purring, a sound of approval deep inside him.
He bought the coat and a dark blue, sturdy vest, which was slightly wider and longer than he needed, but he didn't want to experience another morning similar to that today. It almost looked like armor, supporting Niko's little fantasy. Said man also gave him a wide pair of leather jeans, the fabric looked like it was directly taken from the hide of a snake, woven in a similar pattern to the animal. His choker didn't fit the new outfit, so he chose to wear a black scarf instead, folded neatly to hide his neck area and tucked into the vest. Finally, Yugi chose to get two brown leather gloves and high, black, thick leather boots. Wearing it all, Yugi thought he would soon start to perspire. He didn't though, the material proved to be surprisingly light. He could get used to this outfit.
/You look... different. But it definitely suits you./
Yugi let out a sweet, small chuckle.
|| Think it stands out enough to attract women?|| **
Yami replied with laughter. /Yugi you won't get them to stop to swoon over you./
Wearing the blue coat, he felt like the devil's advocate. Which, in light of his recent discoveries, seemed to suit him. The voice approved.
The last remaining time before departure was spent in his soul room, with Yami. It amazed Yugi how his new appearance and clothes easily copied into their soul connection. Yami wore his usual attire still. He speculated that, if he was to take over the control of Yugi's body now, his soul image would probably adapt to him.
They trained with swords again. This time Yugi was easier on the Pharaoh, making the little sparring session more enjoyable for both. It dawned on Yugi that, since he had last spoken to the voice... his devil side... he regained much more control of his body. He hoped for it to stay that way. He wasn't dragged into darkness either, although his devil side did communicate with him a few times. Probably the connection getting stronger, he mused. The devil was apologizing for trying to take over their body like that. His human side didn't really trust him, yet.
Yugi was glad that the former Pharaoh couldn't hear the whispers. He didn't know when to tell him, or the others. "Hey guys! Don't know if you found out already but I've got a devil inside my head! Oh and I'm also a half-devil myself! Yes, those things from hell!"
The voice reminded him of the dangers lurking ahead. For now he just continued on training. As much as he resented the thought of using this blade again... it's powers may be the only way of dealing with his enemies. He just hoped he wouldn't lose control again.
It didn't take as long as he'd expected. He anticipated to wander through the forest for a while before finding anything. Somehow, he knew where to search for. A good sign.
Seeing the rubble of burnt wood and stone, he figured that it must've been a huge building. Weird. Why didn't anyone know of its existence?
Coming closer, he started to rummage through the piles of the destroyed home for anything that survived the fire. Stone, burnt wood, ash, stone... Some old books, rendered unreadable. He searched for an hour. Then two. Nothing. The boy was tired.
Was this really my home? I can't remember. He sat on some stones which hadn't enough ash on them to turn his pants black. Why did he even try? He was almost totally covered in it anyways.
Young Yugi let out a sigh. It wasn't easy to come here without his mother and grandpa noticing. They thought he went to school.
He laid his hand on his chest. Comforted at feeling a familiar weight there. He hid it well. The large red stone encased by gold. The orphanage he had lived in has never seen it. Not even his foster family knew of its existence. Feeling the surface which should've been cold instead warmed his hands. He cried during nights when he thought of the pendant. Desperately trying to remember why it was so important to him, but failing each and every time. He had hoped that it would aid him in his search. But he was slowly losing his faith.
He sat there for a while. Listening to the sounds of the forest. Calm down.
*C...re... *
Birds sang. He couldn't figure out the type. Never really interested in ornithology. Is that how it was called?
*So... o... da...*
His pendant felt warmer than before. Strange. Wait... it didn't glow, did it? No, he's seeing things.
*Ri... ul o... er. Find m...*
What?... Was that just?
No, he didn't imagine it. He jumped on his feet. It came from the left. The kid ran through the fallen debris. Already searched here. But why...
A lever on the ground. It was hidden by burnt furniture parts. He never would've found it. Slowly, he pulled it up. A small entrance lied beneath it, narrow stairs. Dark as the abyss.
*Cla... me.*
He took the risk. Step for step, feeling around with his small feet before putting weight on it. Don't fall. The stairway went deep into the ground. How long had he walked in total darkness?
A faint blue light slowly approached him. Lit Torches? How is that possible? Blue flames flickered on the walls. They almost seemed surreal. Not thinking too much about that for now, the young boy continued on, now with sight.
Finally, he reached an old wooden door. Pressing against it, it opened easily.
Bookshelves. A lot of them. Spiders had woven their silken fly traps all over them. It was dusty, too. Almost like an underground library. Smart idea to store them down here, considering the rest got destroyed by fire. What captivated the boy the most was something else entirely. There, behind the many rows of bookshelves was a stone table. Two glass cases were on it, one smashed and empty. The contains of the other one the young boy could only describe as pure beauty.
A long, slender sword with a white, black striped handle, the sheath dark and decorated with finest gold ornaments. Two golden bands were tied at its top. A katana.
*My... Ma...er*
There was a small label inside. 'Yamato', it read. The case wasn't locked. He carefully took it out of its velvet silken bed.
Cold. It seemed as if just holding it drained his hand of all its warmth. He carefully freed it from its sheath. The blade was flawless, light reflecting bright even in this dim lit area. The power it emanated was immense, the boy could feel it. That's definitely no ordinary blade.
He was scared. It was as if this katana was alive. But leaving it here in this dark place would be a total waste of this masterpiece of sword crafting. He sheathed it again, the blade falling in place with a loud, metallic clicking sound.
Yugi considered taking the books with him, but he didn't have anything besides a small bag to carry them with. He had to come back and get some each time he visited.
Packing his bag full of books until he was sure another one would break his weight limits, the kid decided now was the time to leave. Bag over his shoulders, the katana in his left hand, he climbed the stairs back up again.
The light of the torches disappeared behind him. He moved slower, using his free hand to press against the wall.
Suddenly, he stopped. He could feel something up there. He wasn't alone. Whatever it was that awaited him there, he didn't think that it would be something nice. The coldness of the blade in his hand increased. Looking down, he swore he could see it glow behind its sheath. What does that mean, enemies ahead? Only one way to find out.
He resumed to walking. After some time he could hear faint noises. Growling. Could be that there are wolves in these woods. Shit. What should he do? Wait here?
*Kill.*
No. A glance at the blade he hold to his left. He could do it. Others might see him as just a small kid but with that power in his hands... the boy felt confident.
Almost reaching the top, Yugi put his bag on the stairs readying his weapon.
He saw them lurking up ahead. Definitely no wolves. What are they?
Multiple, strange shadows. Fangs and claws on hands. All had blades, some replaced one arm, others one leg. Constant, inhuman laughter coming from them. Demons.
He drew Yamato, running towards them. They were alerted of his presence, but it was already too late for one. Cut in half, cleanly, both halves fell onto the ground slowly disappearing. The boy could feel the power of the katana flow through him. He moved, faster than normal. He didn't know he could use a katana, it just felt natural to him. Two tried to jump him. Dumb creatures. A series of well placed strikes was enough. Blood sprayed everywhere. It felt good. Killing felt good.
A maniacal grin spread on his face. The other demons didn't have a chance to react. Entirely focusing on the powers of the blade he took lightning fast steps forward, moving his katana even faster, then suddenly stopped behind the group of demons.
Nothing moved but his hands, sheathing the blade in front of him. It clicked into place, his enemies falling into pieces behind him. Not a single demon survived. Blood covered the ground and some of it landed on the boys face. Reaching up with his left hand, he touched his cheek and then looked at the blood traces on his palm.
Wait... what did I...
Shocked, he almost let Yamato fall from his hold. No... No no no. I'm not a fighter, I didn't enjoy it, I... He glanced at the sword, frightened.
Reaching his home he enclosed the sword and hid it upstairs, under the roof of the game shop. He was considering to put it back to where he found it. It was dangerous.
But as Yugi used it, he couldn't ignore the feelings of familiarity invading his senses. It was his gift. It rightfully belonged to him, he knew it somehow. His own dark source of power.
** little throwback to the hilarious Anime scene in the Japanese original xD
