Jack stood in the Warren, a happy smile on his face. He liked the heat here. It wasn't unbearable, it was a nice, happy warm.
"Jack!" Tooth called.
Jack turned to the pool of water that North, Tooth and Bunny were swimming around in. Sandy sat off to the side, sitting in a dream sand lawn chair with sunglasses on. He seemed pretty content. But he was probably just sleeping.
"Yeah?" Jack asked.
"Are you going to get in?" She asked cheerfully.
Jack walked towards the water and sat on the edge of the spring. "Nah, I think I'll sit this one out."
"I thought I was the boring one," Bunny commented, floating past on his back. Jack stuck his hand in the water and splashed the overgrown rabbit. Startled, Bunny dunked under by accident before coming back up with a scowl. "Drongo."
Jack laughed along with North and Tooth. Jack stood up and moved into the shade a bit. The warmth here may be nice, but the sun bearing down on his hoodie-clad back was a bit much.
North frowned, watching him. "Is it too hot here, Jack?"
"Hm?" Jack was surprised North had noticed his slight discomfort. He laughed and waved a hand dismissively. "No, no, I'm fine." He reached behind his head and pulled off his blue hoodie, so he was only in his loose white peasant's shirt that was tucked in at the waist. He placed the hoodie out of the way of the water and dangled his feet in.
It's not that he didn't want to swim, it's just in the small spring, his natural body temperature would cool the water down too much, causing discomfort for the others. If it was a larger lake it wouldn't be a problem.
Jack thread his fingers the the soft green grass with a smile. It was hard it enjoy spring and summer being a winter spirit.
He wrapped his finger around the stem of a purple flower, and plucked it out of the ground. Jack twirled it between his fingers before putting it to his nose. He suddenly pulled back and sneezed.
"Bloody hell!" Bunny yelled.
Jack looked up, startled by the shout. "What?"
He noticed Bunny looking at him with a startled look as Tooth and North turned to him, and Sandy waking up.
"What?" He asked again.
Tooth, North and Sandy seemed to have no idea what startled Bunny.
"Do that again!" Bunny said.
"What? Sneeze?" Jack asked, then laughed. "Why?" Everyone was watching him and it creeped him out. He put the flower to his nose again and sneezed into his elbow.
In the second it took for him to sneeze, the roots of his hair turned brown, flashing through the rest of his hair, before seeming to leave at the tips, leaving his hair white again. When he opened his eyes and looking up, he eyes were brown, but after he blinked they turned blue again.
Everyone was looking at him in shock.
"What? Do I sneeze weird or something?" Jack asked, kind of annoyed.
"No," Tooth said. "No, you- your hair, it-"
Sandy waved his hands to get Jack's attention. When Jack looked at him, he flash a few words, loosely translating to "White hair brown, blue eyes brown."
"Um…" Jack said.
"Your hair and eyes turned brown when you sneezed," Bunny said. "How did you do that?"
Jack was silent for a moment, before he started laughing. "That's so cool!" He ended up laughed as he lay on his side.
"Do you know why that happens, Jack?" North asked.
Jack said up, still grinning. "It's probably because of when I was alive."
"What do you mean 'when you were alive'?!" Tooth shouted.
Jack cocked his head, confused. "Well technically I'm dead right now. But… alive. Hey! I'm like a zombie!"
"Jack, what are you talking about?" North asked.
Jack took a second to right himself, before saying. "Story time!"
Bunny rolled his eyes but listened anyways.
"So you guys know that we all- well most of us start out as something else before we are turned into a spirit?" Jack asked, and everyone nodded. "Well I was a human, obviously and I lived in the 1700's."
That wasn't shocking, they all knew that already.
"But I had brown hair and brown eyes, my name was Jackson Overland, I had a twin brother named Jakoby and a little sister named Emma. My brother died when we were… twelve I think, but my sister and I were really close, until I took her ice skating one day," Jack explained. "I didn't test the ice before we went on, and it only took a few minutes for some ice to crack under my sister."
Tooth gasped. Everyone knew where this was going.
Jack got a faraway look on his face as he continued. "She said she was scared, and I hate it when she's scared so I told her we were going to play a game; hopscotch. We played that a lot. I noticed that the ice under me was cracking too and I would be able to help her if I fell in, so I pretended to play, while moving closer to a crooked stick on the ground." Jack gestured to his staff.
He then continued. "I picked up the stick and had her inch closer to me, so I could grab her with the stick. When I did, I pushed her towards more stable ice, but accidently switched places with her."
Jack put his head down, playing with some grass between his fingers. "Before I could get up, the ice beneath me cracked… and I fell in. I died, and that night the moon resurrected me with no memories."
"Oh Jack…" Tooth said, flying over to hug him, Sandy following. "Is that why you had no memories?"
Jack nodded, sadness written across his face. "I just wish I could have seen her grow up…"
North and Bunny exchanged a glance, not knowing what to say.
Bunny suddenly stood and walked over to Jack. "I can help you find her… um… gravestone if you want." Jack nodded.
North stood too, and offered to help Jack find Emma's descendants, which Jack was grateful for.
Jack finally sighed and cleared his voice. "Alright no more chick flick moments."
Tooth laughed and pulled away from Jack… right before he sneezed again and his hair and eyes flashed brown.
"That's actually pretty strange…" Tooth commented with a laugh.
Jack's eyes widened. "What if my heart starts every time I sneeze!"
"That would be pretty strange," North said, and Sandy nodded in agreement.
"So you're a zombie?" Bunny asked with a smirk.
Jack jumped to his feet. "Yes! Now bow before the Zombie King!"
