Gwen sat in the living room, or what she suspected was a large storage room for lab equipment before Marie got to it, of the laboratory reading Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. A copy of Hamlet was resting on the table in front of her. With her brother on a mission and Spirit supervising said mission Gwen decided that the day could be well spent by switching between reading Poe and Shakespeare. Over the past few hours she has come to the conclusion that Romeo and Juliet are morons and that she admires the ease at which Montresor fooled Fortunato. She was just about to begin "The Pit and the Pendulum" when she sensed Spirit's soul at the door. Soul perception was a new ability to Gwen, but she has found that she has been able to develop it at a fairly quick pace. Gwen was opening the door before Spirit even had a chance to knock.

"Hello Spirit! What are you doing here? Is the mission over?" she asked as she looked at the slightly winded looking Spirit.

Spirit reached over and grabbed Gwen's arm, "You need to come with me, now."

Gwen reached for the handle of one of her kamas with her free hand. "What? Why?"

"It's Stein. Something happened on the mission. He was taken to the infirmary at the academy."

Gwen leaped through the doorway and was running towards the academy before Spirit could even finish his sentence.

Spirit and Gwen entered the infirmary to find everything in complete chaos. Nygus was futilely trying to restrain a laughing Stein to a hospital bed, Marie was erupting into hysterical fits, Sid was bleeding on the examination table, and a group of students were cowering in the corner. Gwen wouldn't have expected more chaos if she just walked into Hell.

"I can feel the madness radiating from his soul." A smile started to pull at Gwen's lips. "NO! I need to stay in control. I can't lose myself to the madness again." Without a word Gwen walked over to one of the cabinets and grabbed a vial and a syringe. Loading the medication into the syringe she turned to her brother and stuck him in the arm, injecting him with the syringe's contents. A few seconds passed and Stein's laughter quieted as he fell back on the bed asleep. Gwen felt Stein's madness subside, but hers was still nagging at the edges of her mind. She could feel the muscles in her arms starting to twitch.

One of the students in the corner looked at her with concern. "Ms. Stein, are you okay?"

Gwen managed to pull herself together and say, "I'm fine, just a bit freaked out about my brother that's all."

Spirit came up and placed his hand on Gwen's shoulder. "It's okay to be scared. Seeing your brother like this must be pretty traumatic." Gesturing to the student he said, "Gwen, this is my daughter Maka. Maka, Gwen is the girl I told you about."

"You're dating Professor Stein's sister!"

Gwen began to ease herself away from what was sure to be a heated discussion and over towards Nygus who was having some trouble stitching up Sid's wound.

"Hey Gwen, thanks for taking care of Stein," Nygus said before she growled in frustration. "Stein is the one who usually takes care of stitching. I'm out of practice."

Gwen was too transfixed by the sight of blood flowing from Sid's fresh wound to notice any of what Nygus just said. She finally pulled herself back to reality when she noticed the look Sid and Nygus were giving her.

"Huh? I'm sorry I just didn't expect a zombie's blood to look the same as a living person's. Something else that I've been wondering, do zombies have souls? And if they do what do they look like?" Gwen quickly used her soul perception to check. "Hmmm, so it seems that they do and like before it is the same as a living person. Interesting."

Sid looked at her with surprise. "You can see souls? I thought you weren't a meister?"

Gwen looked Sid right in the eyes. "I'm not, but I theorize that…. recent events have caused me to develop the ability."

Sid looked right back at her. "I see."

"I know you do. Nygus would you like me to stitch up Sid? My brother took it upon himself to make sure I knew basic first aid in case of an emergency."

"Stitching up stab wounds is basic first aid?"

"According to my brother it is. Let's put it this way, I'm fairly certain I could perform open heart surgery with no problems."

With that said Gwen took the needle and thread from Nygus and began to mend Sid's wound.
