CHAPTER 6

•~Annie~•

Timeline for this chapter: July 1994

Both my Auntie Renée and Uncle Charlie have just been sitting still in their chairs in front of me going on eight minutes now. Charlie's shoulders are hunched, elbow on the dining room, as he stares off into the sitting area, his face wearing a look of disbelief. Renée, on the other hand, wore a mask of shock, staring off out the window facing the backyard. To be frank, even though I just appear to be waiting patiently for them to snap out of it, they are both seriously starting to worry me. Before I could work myself up any further Renée comes back to her senses, Charlie closely following.

For a few moments they appear to be gathering their thoughts, Charlie turns to address me first. "You certainly know how to give us heart failure, Annie," he chuckles weakly, and I breathe a sigh of relief, the tension just melting away between us. "But in all seriousness now, we would like to talk about this together in a civilised manner," he goes on, only continuing at my nod. "So, I would like to start with my questions, and then I'm sure Renée will have some to ask too,"

"Of course, Charlie, I wouldn't have expected anything less and I'll answer them all as best as I can. Yours too, Renée." I say to them.

"Alright, first question. Why did you lie, no mislead..." he corrects himself when I'm about to interrupt. "...us into assuming you were with one of the friends that we know, instead of just telling us you were with Eva?" He asks. "You know we would have still let you go."

"I know you would have let me, but not before wanting to know who she lives with," I explain.

"Well, of course we would have asked that, Annie. We do that with all your friends just so we know who to contact while you're there," Renée answers instead this time.

"And that's the reason why I couldn't tell you," I tell them bluntly, but not hint of rudeness is present in my tone.

"And just why not?" she counters. "You don't mean to tell me that they're some sort of criminal, do you?" Renée asks, jumping to the wrong conclusion.

"No!" I reply quickly. "No, he's no criminal. In truth, the only crime he is guilty of is putting his family before his own true happiness," I tell them softly, thinking of the person who I have gotten to know in the past three years because of Eva. I still remember the first time my friends and I were all invited to her home the Christmas of her first year at Salem.

"He? You mean to say that Severus Snape is here in America, caring for his daughter, and you and your friends having been staying over for the last God knows how many years?" Charlie accuses, catching onto what I have said and jumping the boat, as per usual. "As far as I was aware, he was still living in Britain, teaching at Hogwarts,"

"I know that but-" I begin to say but find myself cut off again.

"Exactly! So we would both like it if you started to tell us the truth for once," Charlie tells me, raising his voice as his cheeks flush with anger.

"I would and I am if you both would just shut up and allow me a breath of time to bloody well explain," I say deadly low, my hands clenching in my lap underneath the table, trying to keep my cool. They just won't listen!

Glancing from Renée to Charlie, the shock is evident in their faces. Charlie's anger just seems to have drained away and Renée has stifled her gasp of surprise, a hand to her mouth. For all that I can remember, neither of them have ever heard me talk to anyone like that, so no wonder it has shocked them into silence.

Taking a deep breath, holding it in for roughly ten seconds, and releasing it afterwards, I resume talking again. "First of all, I'm sorry you had to see me like that. It's just when you started to send accusations around, I guess I got defensive because they were about people I care about and they do not deserve them."

"You're forgiven, Annie. I know we should have listened to everything you wanted to tell us before jumping to conclusions," Charlie tells me, his voice calm once again.

"And we're sorry too, Annie. We shouldn't have gotten angry, but you are our daughter in everything but direct blood, and we love you," Renée adds softly, giving me a gentle smile.

"I know, love you too guys," I say, smiling back.

"Alright, why don't we listen to everything that you have got to say before we have our discussion...as a family," Renée proclaims to Charlie and I.

I nod in agreement. "That's cool with me. You sure you're ready to hear all this, some of it will come to you as a bit of a shock," I warn them.

They turn to look at each other, and then back to face me. "We're ready, Annie," Charlie say, speaking for them both.

~~~~~Scene Change~~~~~
•~Carlisle~•
We are all currently in the Great Hall of Hogwarts School, a magical school for Witches and Wizards situated in the Scotland Highlands. My family and I are all sitting at the High table along with Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Arthur and Molly Weasley. Also, Harry Potter is here too along with his friends Hermione Granger, Ron, Ginny, Fred and George Weasley.
I have been in contact with Albus for many years now after meeting him during the first war involving Grindelwald and I try my best to keep up to date with what is happening within the Wizarding World from wherever we are living at the time. We moved to America away from Britain after Voldemort's downfall during one of our family meetings, all agreeing that it was for the best. To think that we all thought we had found a place to call home at last in Forks when we met our dear Annabelle. She is so at peace with the world around as if she takes everything in her stride and somehow is comfortable and connected with our kind – it's almost unnatural for a human to be. When Alice told Esmé and I that she had a vision of us all leaving for Britain once again, without Annabelle, we were beside ourselves – we were going to be leaving our daughter behind and alone, why would we even think of doing such a thing. But then it all made sense as soon as Edward spoke to everyone one week ago. It is because of his decision did Alice's visions change and took a different path. We were all confused and distraught with his decision to leave Forks so suddenly and without his mate. I know it is near enough impossible to be able to live without them close to you – even thinking like that should make you upset and slightly pained - to be without your other half. I only know of one vampire who is still alive after losing their mate – Marcus Volturi from Volterra, Italy – and he's heartbroken and is like an empty shell. But Edward didn't even look like he is in distress and according to Jasper, during a brief conversation, he feels only slightly upset, but that is overpowered by boredom. This has gotten me thinking - is Annabelle really Edwards mate or was she something to just pass the time? Was he trying to convince himself that she is the one for him?
I feel Esmé place her hand on my own; I turn and give her a small but sad smile as I turn my own hand to take hold of hers.
I look up slowly to observe Edward's facial expressions and body language from across the table. A normal vampire who is separated from their mate shouldn't be acting relaxed and engaging in conversations with others. They are normally depressed and go out of their way to seclude themselves from others. But not Edward. Luckily, I had the sense to ask Severus for a memory-shielding potion to protect my mind from Legilimency attacks while we are here. My family followed suit of course, but my second motive is to keep Edward out of my head so I can think openly about everything for once.
I can't help but think that Annabelle was never meant for Edward, as he should not have even been able to leave his mate so willingly let alone think about wanting to leave her. From beside Edward I can see Jasper looking at me with sad but faintly confused eyes due to my conflicting emotions. I just sigh silently and shake my head slightly in a response to Jasper. I glance around at my wife and other children – none of us got to say our goodbyes. They are all displaying the emotions that Edward should be feeling. They seem to be missing Annabelle terribly; even Rosalie seems to be looking a bit lost, she was reserved at first but was beginning to warm up to her and think of Annabelle as her sister. With Emmett, he sees her as his baby sister; Jasper has really connected with her, which is unlike him with another human; Alice found someone near enough as cheery and shop-mad as her...well the scale difference is huge but she still has a liking for it. And my dear Esmé, she feels like she has abandoned her own child and that she should've fought to stay with her. I keep telling that it's not her fault but she cannot shift that one thought that she has. There is something different but special about Annabelle that I can't quite place and I didn't even have time to talk to or ask her about it.
