Kyoya was just finishing up documenting the club's inventory when it was 5 minutes until Club ended. He snapped his notebook shut and announced that Club was about to end. Collective groans and complaints commenced. He smiled his host smile and pushed his glasses up.
"Don't worry ladies, we'll be here again after school tomorrow."
The effect was guest's sudden change in mood was almost disturbing but all the hosts were used to it. As usual, Tamaki's customers were the last ones to leave. Haruhi quickly detached herself from her customers, with her natural smile of course, to get out of her attire. Kyoya scanned the room and quickly located the Hitachin pair, who were still doing their incest act for their last few customers.
"Hikaru. Kaoru. Come here." The twins visibly flinched and swallowed as they made their way to Kyoya.
"Y-yes, Kyoya-senpai?"
"Haruhi failed a test. Due to your fooling around." Hikaru narrowed his eyes while Kaoru nervously scratched the back of his neck.
"It was an accident, Kyoya-senpai" Hikaru defended. Kaoru put his hand on his brother's shoulder, sensing his irritation.
"Accidents that happen to often for comfort. You do realize that if Haruhi does not maintain her status as valedictorian, her scholarship at Ouran could be revoked."
"Of course we know that!" HIkaru shot back. Kaoru stood in front of his brother.
"Kyoya-senpai, we didn't mean for Haruhi to fail her test. We'll be more careful next time." Hikaru glared at his brother and crossed his arms.
"That is all I ask."
Hikaru dragged his brother out of the club room and after shouting a quick goodbye to Haruhi, left. Kyoya rubbed his temples. It could have gone worse. Bless Kaoru and his ability to be the voice of reason when needed. He stood up and served himself the last bit of coffee left from his personal coffee maker in the back. He sipped the lukewarm caffeine. Disgusting.
"Isn't that the third cup of coffee you've had today, Kyoya-Senpai?"
Ah. Haruhi. RIght, she was still here. That reminds me...
"I wasn't aware you kept count of my drinks, Haruhi."
" You know, with your family owning hospitals and based on medicine, it shocks me that you do not consider the effects of too much coffee intake."
He smirked. "Again with that? You should start thinking of a new argument, and yes, I am well aware of the potential effects of excessive caffeine intake, Haruhi. Nothing gets past you now does it?"
She rolled her eyes. "Sometimes I feel as if you focus on everything running perfectly that you forget about your own health." That was unexpected. Kyoya cleared his throat and set down his cup.
"I have been busy lately, that is all."
"Aren't you always?"
"More so than usual. But no matter, I wanted to discuss something with you."
"Oh?"
If he was being quite honest with himself, the idea just occurred to him right before his conversation with the twins and he was surprised with himself that he was actually going forward with it. Fortune favors the bold, he mused.
"Yes, a proposition of sorts." Haruhi looked at him with a raised brow. He took that as a signal to continue.
"You failed a Physics test today." He almost smirked at her quick shift of facial expression. Irritation furrowed her brows, her almost too big brown eyes narrowing, her pink lips pulled into a frown...
"I'm not reprimanding you, Haruhi, by any means. You had a valid excuse. The reason I'm bring this up is because I am offering to help you. As a tutor you could say."
Whatever Haruhi was expecting, it was definitely not that. Her eyes widened in disbelief. And then quickly narrowed in suspicion.
"Why?"
"I'm offended that you think I might have ulterior motives behind this."
"Aren't there?"
"Shockingly, no. If you were to be in danger of losing your scholarship because of this one test, the entire Club would suffer." Including me. "By tutoring you I could ensure that you will do more than well on your next few exams and counterbalance today's test." He saw her hesitation, and tried to ignore the little disappointment he felt at the realization. Finally, after a few moments of pondering, Haruhi looked up with a small smile, and goddamnit he was not even going to lie to himself about the wave of relief that washed through him.
"Actually, Senpai, that would actually help a lot. But are you sure? You said so yourself that you've been busier than normal."
"Haruhi, if I wasn't sure, I wouldn't have even brought it up. Don't worry about my schedule, I have it figured out." Right...
"Mon ami! Today was such a success with the Victo-Haruhi, you're still here?" Both Haruhi and Kyoya were surprised at Tamaki's voice. Right Tamaki's still here. How long have I been talking to Haruhi? Hunny Senpai and Mori Senpai are already gone, I didn't even see them leave
"Yeah, Kyoya Senpai and I were discussing something." Haruhi's voice brought him back from his reverie. Damn, I didn't even think about Tamaki while sorting this tutoring idea. I didn't even think that Haruhi would agree in the first place. Tamaki looked from Haruhi to Kyoya.
"About what?" Do I tell him? But then, why should I hide it from him, it's just tutoring. It'll probably be worse if I don't tell him. Kyoya picked up his notebook from his desk and his bookbag.
"Starting today I am going to be tutoring and helping Haruhi with her classes."
Tamaki's face went from surprised, confused, and then pouting. He grabbed Haruhi and glomped her, much to her chagrin.
"Haruhiiiiii, why didn't you ask me for help? Mommy is monopolizing Haruhi!" Haruhi rolled her eyes and wished Mori Senpai was there to get Tamaki off of her. Kyoya sighed and pushed his glasses up.
"Tamaki she didn't ask for help, I offered it. Besides, I'm better at physics than you, which is the subject she needs help in. If she doesn't improve she could be in danger of losing her scholarship, and would be forced to leave not only to leave the Host Club but Ouran as well. You wouldn't want that now would you?"
Tamaki shook Haruhi's shoulders, pout gone replaced with a look of determination.
"Haruhi, I swear on my honor to never let that happen. Lose our secret princess? Never! Listen to everything Mommy says!" Tamaki then turned and grabbed Kyoya bythe shoulders also.
"Mommy, you must do everything in your power to help Haruhi! That is an order from the Host Club President!" A vein popped on Kyoya's forehead because of Tamaki's theatrics and tried to get Tamaki to let go of him.
"Tamaki I swear, if you don't let go of me I'll call my private police force and have them tie you to the clock tower for a week. Or better yet, I'll do it myself." Tamaki let go and sulked in a corner, making circles on the floor with his finger.
"Mommy is mean..." Kyoya rolled his eyes as he quickly texted Tachibana to pull up to the front.
"Get over yourself, Daddy. I'll see you tomorrow. Let's go, Haruhi." He made his way to the door.
"See you tomorrow, Tamaki Senpai." Haruhi waved goodbye to the blond and caught up with an annoyed Kyoya in the hallway.
"That idiot, I swear one of these days I going to end him." Haruhi chuckled
"But you never do."
"No, and I never will. That idiot has attached himself to me. Like a parasite." Haruhi laughed at that. Kyoya glanced at her from the corner of his eye. He could get use to making her laugh.
"I think Tamaki Senpai has attached to all of us. But both of you are so alike, it's no wonder you two are best friends."
"How on Earth am I in any way similar to that idiot?"
Haruhi laughed at the distaste in his voice. She smiled while answering.
"You both are so kind, although you tend to hide it, you both care so much about the Club and all of the Hosts, and" she looked up at him and smirked, "you both get so amazed at commoner food."
Kyoya stopped walking for a moment and looked at her with a completely blank face. I don't know if I should be offended or pleased. He must have stayed like that for a bit because Haruhi began to frown.
"Um Kyoya Senpai?" He turned to the side, his glasses catching the light and adjusted his bookbag on his shoulder.
"Tachibana is here, let's go." He walked ahead of her, not wanting her to see the little smile he couldn't help on his face.
"So how exactly is this arrangement going to work out?" Haruhi asked, serving Kyoya and herself some tea. Ranka-san was working, leaving just Haruhi and Kyoya in Haruhi's apartment. Kyoya took a quick sip of his tea before placing it back down on the table and pulling his laptop out.
"Well, I was thinking that I could come here two times a week, how about Monday's and Fridays? That way I can be here at the beginning and at the end of the week. This week I'll be here today, Wednesday, and again on Friday. I can get the syllabuses from each of your classes so I have an idea on what you're working on. What do you think?" It took her a couple of seconds to respond because she was amazed by the shift in persona he had. He still gave off an authoritative vibe, but h was more relaxed. His posture wasn't was uptight, he had taken his blazer and tie off, the way his jet black hair contrasted with his almost porcelain skin, his black grayish eyes always alert, although lately it seems as if there is a storm in his eyes...
"Haruhi?"
She blinked and forced herself to recall what he asked her. Right, tutoring.
"Yeah, that sounds fine"
Kyoya looked at her for a second then closed his laptop and took a sip from his tea.
"Well that I believe is all. Any questions?"
"Senpai? How much are you going to add to my debt for this?"
Kyoya had his cup halfway to his mouth when he stopped and set it back down on the table.
"Haruhi. I don't expect any payment whatsoever for this. I am helping you because I want to." Haruhi looked down at her cup, embarassed. Kyoya looked almost offended at the question.
"I didn't mean to offend you or anything, I just wanted to make sure" Kyoya picked up his cup and finished his tea. He stood up to put it away but Haruhi got up and took it along with hers.
"It's fine I got this." She placed them in the sink and went back to the table. Kyoya had his stuff ready.
"Haruhi."
"Yeah?"
"I really meant it. I'm doing this because I want to. Not for any other ulterior motive."
"I know, Senpai. I apologize. I shouldn't have asked that. I really appreciate your help."
Kyoya grabbed his blazer from the coat hanger and put it on.
"You're welcome."
Haruhi accompanied him to the door and opened it for him.
"Try to get more sleep, Senpai. I can tell you haven't had enough. That way you can stop drinking so much coffee." He gave her a quick smile before turning to walk down the stairs.
"See you tomorrow Haruhi."
Once inside his limo, Kyoya opened his laptop and began checking the stocks of his company. He was glad to see the stocks stable again. One the board members had too many shares of stock and there were problems going on with the board members. He finally resolved the issue, and maybe for the next few days he could get more than three hours of sleep. He answered some emails and was in the middle of ending one when he heard someone calling him.
"Bochan?"
It was Tachibana.
"Yes?" Tachibana looked at him from the rearview mirror.
"Be careful. Your father is watching you more closely these days." That simple sentence spoke volumes.
"Thank you, Tachibana." Kyoya was expecting this to happen soon. But now that it has, he feels tense. He can't make any mistakes. If he wants to outsmart his father, he can't afford a single one. He closed his laptop and leaned back into his seat.
So it begins.
