A/N hey I have 209 views! Yayyayayay! Anyways, finally finished this chapter!
Disclaimer: seriously why do we even bother.
The train finally stopped and we stepped off, leaving our trunks behind.
"What do we do we now?" I asked Neville and Hermione. Luna stood behind us but wasn't paying much attention, or so I thought.
"I think we ought to see what that man is shouting about," she said pointing ahead of us, shocking me and apparently the others. We turned and saw the most enormous man shouting and gathering students to him. We stepped closer and understood that he was calling the first years.
"We had better follow," whispered Hermione, and follow we did. The man led us to a lake with many boats waiting along its shore.
"Go on, inta the boats now. No m're 'en four in a boat," he called out. I went with Neville and it was no surprise that Hermione and Luna went with us. A few boats to the left of us was Harry and Ron. Once everyone was settled, the boats began to glide forward across the glass-like surface of the lake. For a few moments, all we did was move forward, but suddenly there were large stone pillars rising up against the starry night sky, followed by a magnificent castle, with gleaming windows reflecting on the glassy lake surface. I gasped. It's gorgeous, and my new home... I kept staring, mesmerized, until we reached the base of Hogwarts. The giant man had us enter into the building and up a set of stairs.
"Thank you Hagrid. I will take things from here," said a crisp voice from somewhere near the front. When the four of us pushed forward, we saw a strict looking woman with a tight bun twisted on the top of her head as Hagrid left the hall.
"I am Professor McGonagall. In a few moments, we will be entering the Great Hall for you to begin your sorting. I suggest you take a moment to fix your appeara-"
"Trevor!" Neville jumped forward and grabbed Trevor from just in front of McGonagall.
"Appearances..." she finished lamely. Behind us I heard a snigger and turned to see a blond haired boy with two larger boys behind him. I glared at him for laughing at Neville. We sure had bonded a lot for only knowing each other a few months...
"I'll be back in a moment," McGonagall said and left the hall.
The second she left, the blond-haired ferret (I need something to call him) walked up to Harry.
"I'm Draco Malfoy," the ferret said. Harry made a face like he would rather not talk to him. Then Draco Malfoy said, "You'll soon find out that some wizarding families are much better than others, Potter. You don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there."He held out his hand to shake Harry's, but Harry didn't take it.
"I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself, thanks," he said. (A/N direct quote!)
Just then, Professor McGonagall came back and had us organize into neat lines before walking us through the doors. Inside was an enormous hall, I guess I should have expected as much from the "Great Hall" but oh well. There were four tables filled with students, two on each side of us. Students on the left wore green, and the yellow right next to us, Slytherins and Hufflepuffs. On the right was Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. I felt everyone's eyes on the group of us and we strode to the front of the hall where a tattered old hat on a three legged stool was placed. We gathered around and waited for something to happen. Then I wide rip formed at the brim of the hat with the sound of tearing fabric and a face was visible. The hat looked around and began to sing.
"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"
It actually wasn't as bad of a singer as you might think. I thought about it for a moment so it's going to see everything in my head? I mean I guess it's not so bad...it's not like there is anything to hide right? Hm...
Professor Mcgongall interrupted my thinking when she pulled out a large parchment and said, "I will now read the names from the list. When your name is called, step up to the stool and sit, and your sorting will begin." I barely had another moment to think before she called out the first name.
"Hannah Abott!" A short, shorter than me, blond girl gave a squeak from somewhere to the left of us and then walked forward quickly to the stool. She looked nervous when the hat was placed on her head and in little to no time the hat screamed "HUFFLEPUFF!" To our left the yellow clad table cheered and welcomed her. Her response was to blush and run to them.
I tuned out to think for a moment and next heard "Lavender Brown!" A girl who giggled, walked up and sat down, crossing her legs. McGonagall placed the hat her head and it screamed, "GRYFFINDOR!" The red clad table to the right stood up and cheered, far louder and more energetic then the Hufflepuffs. They seem like fun I thought...
A few names later came "Michael Corner!" Still on the C's... After a moment of presumably consideration the sorting hat yelled out "RAVENCLAW!" The occupants of Ravenclaw politely stood and clapped, only a few whoops could be heard but there where tons on smiles. Ravenclaw doesn't seem so bad...besides I know I love books and all and from everything I have heard about them...
Soon after came the name "Tracey Davis!" A tall girl with short brown hair walked up and put the hat on. "SLYTHERIN!" She smirked slightly and gracefully stood to walk to her new table. The other Slytherins smirked and stood clapping. A few gryfindors glared at them. Well er I don't think I really fit there... Then I recalled a time when I attempted smirking in a mirror...I had failed.
A few shouted sortings later came "Seamus Finnigan!" A moments silence then "GRYFFINDOR!" Another tall student went off to the cheering Gryffindors. I looked around at the remaining students, they all looked as nervous as I felt.
A missed a name while thinking, Anthony Goldstein I think. The one after was "Gregory Goyle!" I recongnized him from Draco/ferret... I think I will just call him Malfoy. "SLYTHERIN!" Was shouted after barely 10 seconds. Wait what's was Hermione' last name again? Didn't it start with a G?
"Hermione Granger!"
I heard a squeak from right behind me so Neville and I moved to let her pass. She looked really nervous so gave a smile and said "You'll do fine." Though I doubt she heard me. Nevertheless she walked up tall and practically rammed the hat on her head. Her sorting was the longest yet until the hat finally shouted, "GRYFFINDOR!" She smiled and bounded down to her new table. Alright who's next I thought. We are on...G's oh no.
Next was Wayne Hopkins, a Ravenclaw. Oh crap J is next. I started to panic even more.
"Megan Jones!" A Hufflepuff. Oh gosh please don't make me go up there next!
"Elizabeth Johnston!" No! I walked up brave as I could and sat on the stool. Every eye in the entire hall was trained on me. I gulped and waited.
The hat spoke inside my head "Hello Miss Johnston. Odd family you have, magic doesn't often skip generations only to reappear in the next. You have a lot of brave family, an awful lot of Gryffindors...but you my dear seem to have taken a new route... You are smart as a Ravenclaw, while loyal as a Hufflepuff. You can be cunning when you wish and brave... Brave at anytime. Hmmm difficult... I can sense you dislike Slytherin, or rather those you have met from it, so not that...too clever to truly belong in Hufflepuff...you are smart and love to learn like a Ravenclaw, as well as express a love for books...yes you could do well there, but I suppose not as good as in Gryffindor. You are brave and have love in your heart..."
"Where is Neville going to be placed?"
"Well he could be anything although he seems to me like a Gryffindor in a Hufflepuff's body and I'm not even in his head."
"Then-Then I want to be in Gryffindor, like my family..."
"Very well. GRYFFINDOR!" The last part was shouted and I felt as if a weight was lifted from my shoulders. I followed the shouts and cheers to my new house and let out a loud whoop with them before sitting down by Hermione, who promptly hugged me.
Neville was soon called, and although I already knew the outcome I was on the edge of my seat. Finally "GRYFFINDOR" rang throughout the hall and I jumped to my feet screaming and cheering louder than anyone else. I jumped up and down yelling and once he finally got to me I practically strangled him in order to get a hug. Then I laughed and he sat on my right side.
Luna became a Ravenclaw.
Malfoy was sorted into Slytherin. It made sense really...
The rest of the students went by normally until "Harry Potter!"
The entire hall silenced (not that they were exactly loud before) but now you could have heard a pin drop. The remaining first years at the front parted for him and he stepped up to the stool. The hat was placed on his head and while he was being sorted whispers broke out. "The Harry Potter?!" was the main thing said of course Hermione and I already knew the answer to that. We all waited with bated breath until "GRYFFINDOR!"
"WOOOO!" I shouted while standing with my table. He had the most energetic welcome and everyone cheered loudly, a few Slytherins glared too (aka, Malfoy). Two red-Headed twins not too far from us chanted "We got Potter! We got Potter!" They kind of look like the red headed boy from the train...
Harry sat a few seats away from us and everyone kept looking at him. Eventually I paid attention to the sorting enough to hear "Ronald Weasley!" He became a Gryffindor and we all cheered again, the two twins shouting "Ickle Ronikins made it!" Yep definitely brothers.
A student later and the sorting ended. Professor Dumbledore stood. "Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you." I laughed already knowing how the odd man worked. Suddenly plates of the most delicious food appeared in front of us and I filled myself. My spirits soared high and I was full of happiness.
A/N hope you enjoyed that. Sorry it took so long to write but I had a lot of info to find. Also look I found the button that makes the page breaker-line-thingy woo-hoo!
