Hey everybody! Riku here with Chapter 7 of TtIR! I missed all of you so much! Before you all come kill me for months without updates, let me explain myself! My computer died a few months ago, and instead of getting it fixed, again, I decided to wait a get a new one. I got a new one about a week ago and I got straight to work! I lost all of my files that were on my old computer, including the half written chapter 7 to this story. So, I had to start over. It took a little while to remember how I wanted this chapter to go. I'm not sure if this is what I was going for the first time, but I'm pleased with it. I want to thank you guys for all the patience and support. Without you, I wouldn't have even bothered to update it. I'll try to update more frequently!
Guess who's in this chapter? You guessed it. Gray! Enjoy!
I still don't own Fairy Tail!
Lyon stood on top of the hill, staring in disbelief at what was in front of him. Isvan looked like it had been hit by a meteor. The buildings were either knocked down or cut in half; the ones that weren't were on fire. Debris surrounded the city; things from bricks to furniture to children's toys were scattered on the ground. A thick cloud formed by smoke and debris floated over the destroyed urban area. Ur was as silent as he was, slowly making her way down the hill and into town. Lyon hurriedly followed after her, not wanting to be left alone in such a terrifying place. He stayed close to his teacher's side; wearily looking from side to side like he expected the monster to jump out at them at any time.
Inside the city wasn't any better. Bodies littered the streets and blood stained the ground around them. Lyon got sick to his stomach when he saw body that looked like it had been flattened when stepped on. He wrapped his arms around himself and tried to keep his eyes on Ur's back but he couldn't help it; the scene around him was far too distracting. He couldn't take his eyes away from the people who had been living not long ago; going about their daily lives, unsuspecting of what was about to happen.
"U-Ur..." Lyon's voice quivered. "I-I think that g-guy's alive." he pointed at the person he was referring to.
Ur stopped, her eyes followed his directions to the body of a small boy. He was lying on top of a man and a woman; the boy's entire body was trembling. Ur slowly made her way towards him, taking great care not to step on any bodies. She knelt down next to the boy and gently placed her hand on his back. The boy's body went stiff for a moment before he pushed himself to his knees; turning to look at the ice mage.
"Are you alright?" Ur asked, her voice full of concern. Lyon shuffled closer, wanting to get a better look at the only survivor they had seen so far. He had spiky black hair and dark blue eyes. He wore a white jacket with an orange furred hood, a blue t-shirt, blue jeans, and brown shoes. He seemed unharmed except for the large cut on his forehead.
The boy sniffed and rubbed his face with his jacket sleeve. "W-Who're y-you?" he asked, unsuccessfully trying to stifle his sobs.
"I'm Ur Milkovich and that's my student Lyon Vastia." she turned slightly and motioned to the seven year old standing a few feet away. "We came from a town over the mountains." the boy nodded his head. "What's your name?"
"G-Gray..." he sniffed. "Gray F-Fullbuster."
"Is anyone else alive?" Lyon flinched at the word alive. He knew Ur wanted to help the survivors but did she really need to jump straight to the point?
Gray shook his head. "N-No... I've b-been all over t-town.." the tears never ceased from streaming down his dirty face. "Everyone's d-dead... M-Mom and d-dad..." he looked at the two people he had been lying on top of.
Lyon couldn't tell if the two resembled Gray or not. Their bodies were so mangled and burnt he couldn't even tell what hair color they had. He couldn't help but wonder why Gray was the only survivor but he didn't dare voice his question. Lyon could tell that now was not the time for interrogation.
"Do you have any other living relatives?" Ur asked. The boy shook his head, turning away from the woman. Ur was silent for a moment before she said. "Come with us."
Lyon blinked in surprise and by the expression on Gray's face when he turned back around told him that he was surprised too. Why would Ur ask this guy to come live with them? Well, she did let Lyon live with her after they just met but still. Lyon wondered why this seemed like such a crazy idea to him.
"W-What?" Gray choked.
"Come with us." Ur repeated and stood up. "You can stay with us until you decide what you want to do." she offered her hand to him. Gray hesitated before he shakily accepted it; Ur easily pulled the small boy to his feet. "C'mon, it's a long walk back."
"Wait!" Gray grabbed her sleeve when she turned away. "I-I wanna bury everyone first..." he awkwardly looked down at the ground. "It doesn't seem right to just leave them like this..."
Ur studied him for a moment before nodding in understanding. "We'll help you."
It took awhile to locate and bury everyone in Isvan. Gray wouldn't agree to leave until he was sure that everyone had been given a proper burial. None of them really spoke to one another, just went on with the task at hand until it was finished. It wasn't an easy task. There had been hundreds of people in the city and by the time they had finished the sun had already began to sink behind the mountains. Ur never tried to talk him out of it, she just helped him bury his fellow citizens. Lyon didn't say anything either; even though his curiosity about the only survivor was gnawing at his mind.
Gray stood crouched over the final resting place of his parents. Ur and Lyon stood a few feet away, patiently letting the boy cry himself out. Lyon looked up at his teacher's face; she still had the same unreadable expression she had when they first arrived. It was like the gruesome scene hadn't effected her at all. Lyon couldn't help but wonder if she had seen far worse and this was nothing in comparison to it. He looked back at Gray; he could hear him speaking but it was hard to make sense of it.
"Y-You won't have d-died for nothing," Gray sobbed. "I-I'll get st-stronger and k-kill that m-monster. I will avenge you, mom, dad. No matter what it takes. I won't forgive what Deliora did to our home." he slowly rose from his parents grave; turning to join the two others.
Lyon looked at Ur once more; her expression had changed a little. She was looking at Gray with something that he couldn't determine. Pity? Disgust? Concern? He couldn't tell. He didn't have long to think about since she had already turned around and was headed back up the hill. Away from the destruction. Away from the death. Away from all the sorrow. Back to their home in the mountains.
They didn't stop to rest and managed to return home around three in the morning. Gray took a bath first when they got home; afterwards, Ur medicated and bandaged the cut on his forehead. She didn't ask how he got it. She didn't ask how he was coping. He didn't thank her and she didn't ask for it. Lyon went on to take his freezing cold bath then joined Gray in the guest room. Lyon claimed the room as his own but it was technically Ur's guest room. Gray silently sat cross legged on the bed, staring down at the sheets. Lyon was putting his clothes in the dresser when the boy took him by surprise.
"What are you studying?"
"Huh?" Lyon turned around to face him.
"The lady said you were her student." Gray replied. "What are you learning from her?"
"That lady's name is Ur," Lyon corrected him. "She's the best mage of all time! She could've been one of the Ten Wizard Saints if she hadn't turned it down!" he grinned as he explained Ur's level of skill. "She created ice magic and that's what I'm learning from her. She's the best teacher!"
Gray was silent while he listened to the other boy's boasting about Ur's skill. He didn't seem thrilled or disappointed. Lyon noted that his eyes were already bloodshot from crying so much. He was about to launch into how he learned the Ice Make: Shield when Gray slid off the bed.
"Hey! I was talking!" Lyon called in annoyance when the boy left the room. "Jerk..." he muttered and followed after him.
He followed him into the living room where Ur was sitting on the couch, reading a book. Without any hesitation at all, Gray sauntered up to her and demanded. "Teach my ice magic."
Ur looked up from her book and stared at him. Lyon attempted to clean out his ear with his finger just to make sure he heard him right. This guy just lost everything and he's already moving on to ice magic? It wasn't even a question it was more like statement. Lyon had begged her to be his teacher and this guy wasn't even giving her an option. Lyon looked at his teacher, willing her to disagree. He didn't want her to teach this guy magic. He was rude and ungrateful. He hadn't even thanked Ur once for letting him stay here or taking care of his injury. Most of all, he didn't want Ur to spend time with him. He could feel the jealously bubbling at the pit of his stomach at the mere thought of it. He knew that was kind of being selfish but he never had a real family. He considered Ur his role model and he thought of her as a parent figure. He didn't want to share her with this random jerk.
"I suppose I could," Ur closed the book she had been reading. "Are you sure this is what you want to do, Gray?"
The boy nodded. "Yes, I want to learn ice magic from you. I want to get stronger." he clenched his hand into a fist.
Ur narrowed her eyes at him for a moment. "You can stay in the guest room with Lyon while you're here. Go to bed, it's getting late."
Rage flared inside of Lyon when Gray left the room without even saying a simple thank you. He didn't even look happy that she said yes. He roughly bumped shoulders with Gray as he passed, the boy glared at him and muttered a "watch it, idiot," before he went on. He was already acting like he owned the place and he hadn't even been there a whole day. Lyon couldn't contain all these emotions, he had to let them out somehow.
"Ur!" he hissed, stalking towards his teacher. "How could you?!"
"How could I what?" Ur frowned.
"How could you agree to teach that guy magic?!" Lyon exclaimed. "He's such a jerk! He didn't even say thank you!" he glared up at the woman. "Do you think he's better than me?"
"Lyon," Ur began. "I agreed to teach him magic, not because I saw some hidden potential, but because I feel like I have too."
"You don't have to do anything, Ur!" Lyon clenched his hands into fists at his sides.
"You heard what he said at his parents' grave right?" Ur told him. "He said that he was going to avenge their deaths at whatever the cost. That's not a good road for him to go down. I can see the pure hatred he has in his heart. If I don't take him in, who will? One of these days, I'm going to clear away all of his darkness."
None of this made any sense to Lyon. He knew that this guy was a jerk but Ur didn't have to teach him magic. He was too far beyond help in his opinion. All of her efforts would be for nothing. He didn't want his teacher to waste her time on someone who wants to learn magic just because he was acting on impulse.
"I still don't get it!" Lyon glared at her. "Aren't I enough to take the place of your daughter?!"
SLAP
Lyon stumbled backwards; holding on to his cheek with his hand. It burned from the impact of Ur's hand against his skin. His whole jaw throbbed; he could feel the tears already beginning to spill over. Ur hit him. The person he loved and admired so much actually struck him. The left side of his face was already beginning to turn a bright shade of red in the shape of a hand print. Clenching his teeth together; forcing the sobs back down his throat, he looked away from her. She had tripped, kicked, and hit him a lot of times when they sparred, but this was different. She struck him all those times to help him improve himself; this time it was out of pure anger.
"Lyon," she grabbed a hold of his arm and pulled him on to her lap from where she was still sitting on the sofa. "Lyon, look at me." she gripped his chin in her hand, forcing his eyes to meet hers. "I never once thought of you as a replacement for my daughter. You're my dear student." she gently touched her forehead to his. He could clearly see the warmth behind her smile though his vision was obscured by his tears.
"Y-You promised nothing w-would change..." he whimpered, trying to pull his chin free from her hand.
"I promised nothing would change between us, Lyon, and it won't." she told him. "Just think of it as getting a new addition to the family." Ur smiled, wiping away his tears with her thumb.
"I don't want to share you with him." Lyon sniffled. "He's a jerk."
Ur chuckled. "I'm sure you'll warm up to him just like he'll warm up to us."
"No way..." Lyon grumbled then his eyes widened in surprise when she hugged him. He didn't like Gray. He didn't like the idea of losing his private lessons with Ur. He decided not to think about it and wrapped his arms around her. Even though Gray was officially moved in, nothing had really changed between him and Ur. She was still the same and so was he. He could easily ignore Gray if he wanted to. Plus this would give Lyon plenty of opportunities to show how much better he was than him. When their hug finally ended, and they pulled away, his tears had stopped and so had his rage.
"Since Gray's occupying your bed, why don't you sleep with me?" Ur suggested.
"Yes ma'am!" Lyon saluted her with a grin. Ur chuckled and ruffled his spiky hair.
Nothing had really changed at all.
