For those that guessed correctly, this chapter will be from Jacob Black's point of view. This needed because this will show how things will progress between these two characters. I just want to remind you all that this story will be a Jacob and Bella story (meaning Jacob and Bella will end up together).
Please be sure to leave a review for me. I love hearing your thoughts and ideas of how you think the story will and should progress. I love hearing CONSTRUCTIVE criticism from you all.
Now enough from me, here is chapter 6 of Quest for the Cure.
November 22, 1926 A couple of miles east of the Quileute River, Washington
I've been on my own for a few weeks now. I cannot believe that I was supposed to be the true alpha of our tribe, but since my transformation came a few months late I was passed over. Samuel Uley had transformed a few years before I did, and seeing as how the Quileute council paid extra attention to him, at least that's how it seemed to me while I was growing up.
It was just me and my dad, and my sisters of course. My mother died in a car accident when I was just nine years old. Now my sisters, Rachel and Rebecca, both moved away from home. We all took my mother's death really hard. My sisters, twins, did the best they could to make sure that we had a decent meal at the end of the day, but secretly my father and I knew that they were no longer happy living here. Rachel left for higher learning after she finished school on the reservation, and Rebecca married some man who was a surfer; apparently they are swimmers that use boards to ride on the big waves. Rebecca really liked him, but I was just indifferent.
When my sisters moved out it was just my father and I. It was good, over the years his diabetes had gotten to the point that he had to be in a wheelchair full time. But that never stopped him from what he wanted to do. He still managed to lead the tribe council meetings, and the council still made sure that all of the stories of our ancestors were still passed down to the younger generations.
When I finally morphed into a wolf, I thought that I was going insane; all different kinds of thoughts were rushing through my mind. All of the myths and stories I was told as a kid growing up rushed through my mind as well. I thought this couldn't be happening.
Soon though I was able to control my transformation, and the council informed me that all of the myths and stories I had heard about growing up were all in fact true. Oddly enough I didn't need much more explanation or coaching. I always secretly wished that all of the tribe stories were true; I mean who wouldn't want to be able to morph into a giant wolf?
Life in the pack went by rather dully in my opinion. I hated that I had to listen to what Sam had to say, and that I couldn't disobey any command that he gave us. I was a bit like Paul, another member of the pack; I was always itching to fight any leeches, vampires that came within a few miles of the reservation. Then there was a time that a group of vampires had asked an audience with the council members. It had to do with making sure that everything still was as it said in the treaty that had been signed decades ago. I honestly didn't care what they had to say, I just wanted to rip some vampires to shreds. Paul was the same way when it came to the mention of vampires.
But that was nothing like how I felt when I had learned that I was supposed to by the alpha of the pack, I had learned that my ancestor. I don't even remember morphing into my wolf form but I did and stormed off out into the woods. I ran as far as I could, and soon I came to a clearing that had been overrun with a variety of flowers. There were daffodils, black-eyed susans, freesia, and even some tall weeds that could definitely pass for flowers. Something about this place immediately calmed me and I was able to morph back into my human form. I was still extremely angry at the entire situation. I hated that I had been kept in the dark about how I was supposed to be the alpha, but when I didn't transform right away it was immediately decided that I would never be told the truth. Learning this information put all the pieces I had been missing together for me.
This explained why I always felt so agitated around Sam and the council. Why I always wanted to attack Sam and was always so upset. I guess my subconscious new the truth and was trying to claw its way to the surface to tell me.
I lingered in the meadow for another moment or two then I started to find my way back to the path I had followed to get here when I heard a twig snap off in the distance. All the hair on my arms stood up at attention and I could feel a growl forming in my chest.
Before I could even register everything I immediately morphed into my wolf form and put myself into a defensive stance. According to our stories and myths a shape-shifter only morphs when a vampire is nearby, but I could not smell the stench of leech anywhere. Then I saw a stranger standing a few feet away from me on the path I had taken. He was wearing a blue plaid flannel shirt and a ragged pair of beige pants.
"You're an awful long way from home son. Shouldn't you get home, your father will be wondering where you've gone." Something about the way he talked made me think that he was taunting me, wanting me to attack him. It was like he knew that I had a short temper as of late. Had he been watching me all of this time? It made me wonder about this exact fact, but I had my suspicions of this.
Though I was seething at this point I forced myself to morph back into my human form and locked my jaw. I made sure that I was at high alert and that I would be prepared for anything.
"You seem to know a lot about me, but I'm not worried. I can handle myself fairly well." I was acting a bit cocky, but then this usually scared off most of the people and creatures that tried to act like they were tough enough to take our kind on. "Oh, but you should be worried, see, you're encroaching on our land mongrel, we don't take kindly to outsiders thinking they own the place." I could see his entire body shaking. Before my eyes I saw his body slowly start to transform, he remained on his two feet, but his body began to grow hair all over. His ears began to become more pointed and his face turned into more of a snout by the time his transformation was finished.
So there's one, I could get rid of him without even breaking a sweat.
I spoke too soon because almost immediately after he changed into whatever it is that the man was four more creatures that looked a lot like the man I first met.
Ok, this might be a bit more complicated than I first thought.
"Not so tough now that you're outnumbered are you son. Now I'd say you better be on your way before you get into more trouble than your wolf self on out of our territory before you end up as dinner." The creature before me spoke with baring teeth. I never was one to back down from a fight, but that was when I had still been part of a pack. Now that I was on my own I needed to pick and choose my battles carefully. Thankfully I wasn't completely surrounded and carefully made a retreat back the way I came. I hated myself for being weak and backing down from a fight, but I knew that I wouldn't make it out unscathed if I decided to take the five of them on alone.
The way they looked reminded me of something I read in a book when I was growing up; yet another creature I thought to be nothing more than something to give kids nightmares.
Coyotl
That was definitely the creature I saw back there. They didn't do much damage, but I didn't want to take the chance of the small possibility that I would end up as their late night snack or something.
I backtracked for a few miles then decided that I would head east for some change in scenery. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go, but I knew that I wanted to see the world.
June 5, 1927 Somewhere in the Great Plains
I've spent the good portion of the winter in the northern part of the United States, I managed to keep to myself most of the time, but there were times when I came into contact with a vampire or two during my journey.
Since I've been on my own I've killed a total of twenty vampires. I made sure before I killed them that they were in fact feeding on human beings. I will admit there a few 'vegetarian' vampires that I had slaughtered, but I could tell from the stench they put off that they were anything but 'vegetarian' vampires.
I was making my way along the Canadian border in my wolf form when I caught a whiff of a vampire, but this one did smell different than the others. She had flowing chestnut hair that fell just below her shoulders. She looked more human than the leeches I've slaughtered. Something about her made me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. I did my best to shake off this feeling, but even my best efforts weren't enough. Though I have been told to never shift back into a human in front of a vampire I decided to do it anyway and forced myself to shift back.
"So, those stories Laurent told me about a longstanding tribe of Native Americans that could transform into wolves was in fact truth – and here I thought it was yet another lie that he filled my head with. So let me guess, you've cornered me so the rest of your pack will have an easier time of tearing me to shreds?" The female vampire said – more to herself than to me – as she looked around for the other wolves she thought were in my pack. I could tell though that she was not even terrified in the slightest. It was almost as if she were expecting it – like she had no reason to live anymore.
Now she wasn't looking to end her life or something, but just the way she acted made me want to comfort her.
Get a hold of yourself Jake, this girl is a blood-sucking leech. She kills innocent humans just for their blood.
This part of me was screaming at my other side that was trying to rationalize the reason for her being the way she was. Then I got a good look at her eyes and saw that she was, in fact, one of the few true vegetarian vampires I've come across over the years.
I never really thought that a vampire could feed off of animals, or even wanted to. Her eyes were amber in color, and she could've passed for human if there wasn't the absence of a heartbeat.
That was another thing that boggled my mind. You would think that humans would notice that one major detail that separated them from vampires. But I suppose you'd have to have sensitive hearing to truly tell the difference.
"What makes you assume that we're going to tear you to shreds?" I was bluffing, I was on my own, but this female vampire didn't need to know that. The longer she believed that I wasn't alone the safer I would be. I may have a good couple feet of height over her, but something told me that she would be a lot faster than I was; and that's saying something.
"That's what you wolves do when vampires come onto your territory; you get a bit touchy when we get close, it's like you don't like sharing land all that much." The female vampire said with a smirk – a smirk that made me either want to claw her to shreds or to take her and kiss her.
That last one confused me to no end, she's a vampire, and I've been taught that vampires are blood-sucking monsters that need to be neutralized. This whole feeling was strange to me and something inside me told me that I would need to stick close to her – why, I wasn't so sure, but something inside of me was screaming for me to never leave her side.
"So, now that we have exchanged a few words, why don't we introduce ourselves? My name is Isabella Swan, but I would prefer it if you would call me Bella." Wow, she even had a beautiful name to match her beauty.
Stop thinking that way Jake, you know she can't be trusted, she's a vampire, a leech, and she will turn on you once your back is turned!
I growled softly to myself to try and keep my thoughts from giving myself a headache.
"Um, well my name is Jacob Black. How old are you exactly anyway?"
"Now, didn't anyone ever tell you that it isn't very polite to ask a woman her age? But if you must know I am officially seventeen, and to answer your follow up question I was changed just shy of a year ago. It won't be a full year until the fall, now tell me, why do you travel alone and not with your pack?"
Perceptive one this leech was.
I almost tried to persuade her that she was wrong, but I couldn't lie to her. I just shrugged my shoulders a bit and made some sort of vague excuse as to why I was traveling alone. I didn't want to tell her the full story, one reason being was that I would get angry all over again, and the second one being that I just didn't feel like telling her.
"Fine, you don't have to tell me. But now am I allowed to go along and mind my business, because this has been all fun and games, but I've got to get going." Bella said as she flipped her hair and started to walk away in the opposite direction.
Something inside of me wanted to beg her not to go, I wanted her to stay, but she hadn't asked me to stay, and I wasn't about to impose on her so I decided that I would keep my distance. I would follow her, but I would make sure that she wouldn't know that I was around. I would make sure that none of the other creatures out there in the world would get her.
I'm not sure why I felt this way about a stupid vampire. I mean I've never felt like this before, and it was a bit foreign to me to say the least. I sighed and let her continue walking on and when she was out of earshot I let out a long loud growl and quickly morphed back into my wolf form. I took off in the same general direction. I wasn't sure if I was going to see her again, but I would do my best to make sure that she stayed as safe as possible no matter the cost.
Ok, so now we know that Jacob is going to protect Bella, even if she doesn't really want nor need his help. He seems to be a bit confused with the fact that he doesn't want to attack and rip Bella to shreds for being a vampire.
What are your thoughts?
