Chapter 6

Sora
"Young man?" The voice repeated again. It was then Sora realized, the voice was not coming from inside his dream. His eyes fluttered open, and he almost fell off the bench. He fell asleep at the park last night, and the sun was just rising above the horizon. There was an old man standing at the other end of the bench.
"Young man, are you okay? I found you asleep here." He said to Sora, genuine concern in his voice.
"Y-yeah, I must have fallen asleep here last night..." Sora replied, still a bit disoriented from his sleep.
"You shouldn't do that anymore, it's dangerous. Do you need any help getting home?"
"I'll be okay, my house is just down the road. Thank you, though."
"Alright. I'm glad you're okay, it's not every day you see someone asleep at a park. Have a nice day, young man. And tonight, try falling asleep somewhere a little warmer." He said with a wink. Sora smiled, and waved to the man as he walked away. The small gesture from that man made Sora's whole day. He showed concern for him, despite the way he looked. Most of the time, he was judged by others for dressing differently or whatever reason. Sora started home, a smile still across his face.
As he neared the front door, he sighed in relief, remembering his parents weren't home; they were probably hung over and still at their friends house. Good. He thought, snickering. To his dismay, though, the front door was unlocked. I swore I locked it before I left... He opened the front door slowly, and heard voices sounding from inside the living room. His parents. His heart sank to the floor.
Sora quietly closed the door behind him, trying to avoid being heard.
"Sora?" A gruff voice called. No, please... He pleaded silently. "Where the hell have you been?!" His father was nearing the entrance, where Sora was still standing.
"I-I uh, I was just at the park," Sora stuttered. His dad always made him nervous like this. "W-what are you guys doing home? I thought you'd be at-"
"Wouldn't you like to know? Well, Matt's a bastard. I got into an argument with him, and we left. That asshole thinks he's so much better than everyone! So we came home, hoping our son would be here to help us getting over with that little episode, but when we got here, and you were gone, you little shit. What were you doing? You out doing drugs?" His father yelled in his face. He was so close, Sora could smell the bitter alcohol on his breath.
"Dad, no, I was just at the park I swear, I was alone, I-" Sora's sentence was cut off by a sharp blow to the face. He fell to the ground, only to be picked up again by the back of his neck, causing him to whimper in pain.
"What was that!?" His father laughed evilly, mocking Sora's small whine, "You're such a little bitch." He pushed him against the wall, back handing him.
"I'm sorry, Dad, please, stop..." he begged. It was the first time he had ever asked anything like that of his father.
"Once you stop being such a shitty excuse for a son, then maybe I will." He took a hold of him and lifted him up against the wall by his shirt.
"You're drunk, please, stop..." His father let go of him at that comment.
"Excuse me?" Sora knew he had fucked up.
"I-I-" His father punched him in the gut with all his might. The impact caused Sora to fall down, gasping for breath. His father kicked him so many times Sora had lost count. Once he finally got tired, he stumbled off to the living room and collapsed on the couch. His mother had witnessed it all and didn't mutter a word in Sora's defense. Instead, she let out a small laugh at one point, and that's all the attention she gave him. Sora scampered upstairs, sobbing quietly as soon as his mom couldn't see him anymore. When he was in seclusion in the bathroom, he finally got a chance to look at the damage in all its glory.
His nose was bleeding, the blood splattered in various places since he was punched again long after it had started. There were bruises in so many places, Sora didn't even bother looking for all of them.
He cleaned up the blood, changed his filthy clothes, and proceeded to plop down on his bed. He grabbed a pillow, clutching it tightly to himself, his tears drenching it. For a split second, he imagined the pillow he was clutching to his chest was princessofhearts. He quickly pushed that idea out of his head, it was a stupid thing to think about. He didn't even know her real name. Sora had never cried like this before, but he didn't know what else to do. He tried desperately to pull himself together, but his efforts were in vain.
Against his better judgment, he eventually decided that he would message princessofhearts. He was finally going to do it; tell her everything. About his dad, his mom, the bullies at school. After all, what did he have to lose? She couldn't do anything about it, anyway. They had been talking for a little while now, and she still stuck around. She wouldn't if she knew you in person... He thought, bitterly. Causing his heart to sink in his chest.
Sora did message her, but he didn't tell her everything. He couldn't bring himself to do it; he didn't want her to carry that burden.
keymaster: Hey, can I talk to you? Like... face to face? On the webcam? Please don't be freaked out or anything, but, I've just had a really bad day... I know it sounds weird, but, you're my closest friend, you know? So, it would mean a lot to me...
Sora hesitated, his finger hovering over the enter key. He took a deep breath and pushed it quickly, looking away from the computer. He nervously awaited her response.
Kairi
The mall was uncomfortably crowded. It usually was, but it was the last Saturday before homecoming, so it was even more so. Kairi was here with Yuffie and Selphie, "dress shopping." More like, watch Selphie and Yuffie try on dozens of skimpy, expensive dresses. She desperately wished she could be at home, watching her favorite show. She sighed deeply as the two girls dragged her into another store full of clothes she actually couldn't actually afford.
As they browsed the aisles, Kairi couldn't avoid letting her mind drift to the night before. She was torn between being proud of herself and regretting it all. Selphie and Yuffie still had no idea what happened, and she wanted to keep it that way for as long as possible. She ran her hand across the various dresses in the shop, deep in thought. She jumped when she felt a harsh vibrating from inside her purse; her phone. She pulled it out, and was slightly surprised to see a message from keymaster lighting up the screen. She quickly read it, letting out a small gasp; he asked to see her face to face. She glanced at Selphie and Yuffie, who had just found a tight-fitting red dress. It had a flower design on the left side that tumbled down the leg of the dress, and on the right side it was open, showing of the leg of the tiny mannequin inside it. Kairi never understood their passion for dresses. She sighed, looking away from them again.
She tried to make the whole situation a little less terrible by being more enthusiastic, flashing her famous fake smiles, and giving the girls lame compliments.
"Selphie, that dress makes you look sexy, really shows your beautiful legs." She called to the girls.
" Do you think so? I dunno if I should buy it thought, it's so expensive." Selphie smiled and gave a small spin. The dress spun with her and it did look good on her, even if it was a bit showy.
" If you don't buy it, I will buy it for you. It's just to gorgeous to leave behind!" Yuffie squealed.
" Get it! All the girls will be totally jealous. And, you know who might even give you a second glace." Kairi smirked.
Selphie blushed and covered KairĂ's mouth, glancing from side to side. " Kairi be quiet, someone from school might be here! But.. Maybe you're right." She giggled and her hand dropped from Kairi's mouth.
The plan had worked. After quickly going into the changing room Selphie bought the dress, and Yuffie bought one as well. As they walked towards the food court, Kairi pulled out her phone once more dialed her father's number, eager to get home. She felt awful for not answering keymaster before, but she just didn't want Selphie and Yuffie asking who she was talking to. She wasn't ready to tell anyone about him, yet, especially not those two. Before she finished dialing, someone snatched her phone out of her grasp. Kairi looked up, glaring at Yuffie, who was now holding her phone.
"What do you think you're doing?" She demanded as she held her friends phone.
"Oh I uh... Since we're done shopping, I figured I'd go home and study for that test coming up." Kairi lied.
Selphie pouted. "You said we could all eat together today, we haven't done that in ages!"
Kairi breathed deeply, trying to control her anger. She just wanted to see her real friend; he needed her.
"Ah, yeah, I'm sorry. I forgot. Let's go, the studying can wait, right?" The girls squealed happily at her response, and they all made their way towards their favorite Chinese restaurant. Kairi felt terrible, she was on the verge of tears. The thought of betraying him was tearing her up inside.
Sora
She had seen the message. Why hadn't she answered? Did he scare her away? Did he just fuck up the only friendship he had? He sat in bed, tears slowly rolling down his cheek as he nervously waited for a reply. It's been hours, why am I still waiting? He thought bitterly. He slammed his computer screen down, letting out one last sob. He made his way into his bathroom, sat on the cold tile and stared at the ceiling. After a moment, his thoughts began to wander. She could have just told him that she didn't want to talk; that would hurt a lot less than being ignored. His heart ached at the thought of princessofhearts. It was stupid of him to think he could get close with another person.
He swallowed hard and looked to the cabinet across the room. He slowly stood up, barely breathing as the slowly walked towards it and pulled the creaky drawer open. He rummaged through what was inside until something sharp sliced the end of his finger. His razor. Sora picked it up and examined it. It had been ages since he used it, as he had promised himself he never would again. Sora never kept promises to himself.
He took of his t-shirt and placed his hand on his chest, trying to feel his heartbeat. It was there, but faint. He placed the razor on his chest and slowly let it penetrate his skin, each tear leaving behind a trail of warm red blood.
He held his hand over his heart once more, and this time it was beating much harder. The cut wasn't as deep as he would have liked it to be, so he didn't need to stitch it up. He rinsed it off with some rubbing alcohol to prevent it from getting infected. God knows what his parents would do if they saw that. He looked at the damage one last time before slipping his shirt back on again. The fabric scratched the new wound painfully, causing him to wince in pain.
He felt a bit ashamed with himself, but at least this way he could control the pain. This time, he was the master.
Kairi
Kairi shot out of her father's car and ran into her room, leaving her father wide eyed and sighing. She got her laptop and sat down by her desk, carefully placing the laptop on it. She then ran over to a mirror and checked her makeup, her cloths and her hair. She had to look perfect, she just had to. She had never been so nervous before. After being satisfied she sat down on a comfortable working chair and opened the laptop, feeling butterflies fly around in the belly. She opened the webpage and wrote to him.
princessofhearts: "Hey! I am so sorry, I was out with some friends earlier. Pretty boring. But I'm here now! :) And I'd love to see you face to face. Want to use Trinity or something?
Smiling nervously, she hit the enter key. She would soon see her friend for the first time! Worried thoughts starting flooding her mind as she waited. What if he doesn't like me? What if he thinks my voice is annoying? What if he thinks I'm ugly? She tapped her foot anxiously awaiting his reply.
keymaster: No big deal, I'm fine anyways :)
Kairi's heart sunk like a rock to the bottom of a pond. She wondered what she should say to him now.
"I'm glad! But... Do you still want to talk? I'd like to see my best friend, you know.. " Hesitantly, she pressed the enter key, and leaned back in her chair. She prayed silently that he would answer soon.
