Chapter Seven: Missing
Beeping, the sound filled the empty room.
A sense of voices she knew, begging her to come back, whispers and pleas on her ears.
Warmth of hands on her, gripping it from the strong and tight to soft and light, some hands bigger while one smaller and close to her size.
All mixed in moments to hours, passing in her mind, her body having gone numb in its own way yet her mind fought to hold onto those moments of senses, those voices she knew and yearned to open her eyes too and make an image to all these things. Mind trying to re-control the body that lay in a sense of being gone, eyes trying to open and in moments a flutter of light. Then it would be gone, the blackness gaining on her, still in all this, she would fight in knowing there was people who wanted her to come back.
For a moment all could hear was the beeping as the warmth of a hand once more found her, lightly calloused on the fingers from years on the guitar. Light scars laced that hand and pressed on her skin as a voice she knew started to talk , a voice she had known for a while and that had changed her world in some shade in that first meeting. Images of him standing naked in her house, looking like some fallen angel with empty eyes and a wicked word all the more on lips begging to be kissed.
Cole, yes she knew that voice as the words made a sense in her numb mind. Recalling in broken fragments of memories as a man, his voice reaching on something unseen, their bodies in light to heavy moments. Cole also in wolf form, grey as smoke with those once empty eyes now seemed full and brimming with things he had once lost back in the former life of rock and drugs. Why was talking to her now? Did something happen to make her body a cage, cut off from the mind of the person?
Cole for the moment looked a ghost of the man he had been the night before the shifting into the wolf. Wolf memories of scaring Isabel as she had sat outside and yelled at him in the so normal pitch she used. Looking happy and full of the life with an added flare only held around her body and movements to keep you looking for something more. Oh yes, that same flare that in moments of seeing back in the spring days he was shifting back and froth. Standing in the door way with the sunlight behind her making her look like a angel nearly in a halo of blond hair.
He should have never left, listened to the instincts of the wolf even now pulling at him in whispers under the skin. Sensing something was wrong with her, buried in her body and unseen. God, the part of him that was very much a man wanted to pound his fist into a wall till it was bloody which Grace had stopped, acting right to point to problems done, calling 911, then calling Sam.
Things happened in the order of the calls while some how Grace had gotten into cloths and herself before any random person could see two very naked humans standing over the body of their passed out friend on the floor. Grace in between that had checked pulse, looked around for any food on the floor she could have had a reaction for, gotten a pillow and blanket to cover her and all other Grace things to rule out any factors. Moments later, the EMTS came, with Grace telling them they had gone for a walk and found her passed out, giving them all the details and about the tumor. While he just kept close to her, his hand in hers' in some light shock as Sam came in, everything seemed like in a TV drama only real.
It was when they took her to the ambulance he rushed outside with Grace and hopped into Sam's car and followed at the same speed back to Duluth and were made to wait in the room till a few hours ago. The doctors where running test and looking at x-rays while the three of them took turns in watching her, that been six hours ago from the morning.
Six hours of waiting for some news, any feed back with Cole more or less wanting to growl and hit the walls and smash things as he always did. Yet did it matter right now, her laying like this with her hair spread out like a dove's wings and her skin pale to the point of plain. All that fire that gathered around her from finger tips and hands on hips to sharp eyes and wicked lips, it was gone. She just laid there, the machines hooked up and the IV drop filling the pasty shaded room. Did anything matter if Isabel never opened her eyes again and gave him a lashing worth 1000 years?
No, and all he could was sit here, watch a nurse come in now and then and sip the drug they called coffee in this place. Sam and Grace had gone to the cafeteria to get some food and talk things out. Grace now and then going to the desk to ask for a doctor to speak to him about Isabel but always she got turned away with some lame reasons, Sam was getting a bit stressed, sulking back and froth and even Cole had heard a bit to wolfish growl from Ringo of anger and fustians. Why was it so hard just to freaking tell them a little news? They had taken the blood, done x-rays and had her medical file! So there should have been some news by then? Ya well he easy going to get some!
"Don't go any where beautiful." Cole's lack then luster tone filled the room. Reaching out to touch her hair a moment to push it out from her forehead with gentle like fingers.
Entering to the hall, his nose scented the many cleaners and even lingering death that filled from the rooms. Ears keen for a moment, hearing the pitch and tones of human voices, a coffee maker going off and the hum of machines he had no freaking idea what to call them. What the wolf in human skin was trying to find one voice of Isabel's doctor and soon followed the echo of it to down the hall.
He was in late 50's with the pepper of blank and grey hair, looking soup opera type you might see in the day times shows. "Hey Doc, think I can get answers here on my friend?:
Pausing, he older looking man in an all to over bleach white jacket narrowed his aging eyes at the young man calling out to him. "Can I help you young man?"
Cole was not in the mood for any kind of back talk, seeing yah he had a boy's good looks the chill pushing on the windows as the sunset was lashing out at the wolf to come out and making the man even more edged in being in this place, "Me and my friends came in with a girl named Isabel Copper, we've been waiting all day for some kind of info about what's going on with here Doc. So a little feed back please would ya?"
Mr. Pepper head frown a bit more but looked at his files on a desk, canning the names for a moment and pulling out a file. Humms followed as his eyes darted to the words and X-Rays back to Cole who was about ready to break a chair over the guy's head.
"Normally we would only tell families about this personal information, but given we can't seem to get in any contact with her parents or Aunt for the time then your next in line." The older man's voice held a note of restrained.
Cole bit his cheek a moment, hating the smugness of the voice and even up tight up body language made the once lead singer want to press his fist into the guy's face as he looked at the x-rays, clicking his teeth a moment as his eyes narrowed, "The Tumor is far bigger then we thought from what we was seen back in LA, its pressing on some major area's in her brain and caused a miner seizer, thus making her pass out. We can't tell how bad the damage is till she wakes up if she will in truth. Personally giving what she is going to go through, a peace filled sleep is better."
Better? Cole could only stare at this piece of shit called a doctor, someone who most likely got it into for the money and nothing else. Man did he hate people like this, given he nearly had become someone like that as a singer back in his high band days. Hell it made him happy he was a werewolf and had run into Beck that night in the back of the stage area.
"Oh she will wake up Doc, one thing I know about this woman she is stronger then anyone might think and she's going to live." Cole St Clair smiled hard, edge like he had back on stage. Green eyes flashing a moment as the wolf under his skin also seemed to agree in some point of way. They where going to save Isabel and they had a way, their ace so to speak in the game.
The Doctor blinked, coughed lightly and had the feeling of a deer in the head lights in seeing the animal rise in this eyes and something in the body langue made him want to slink out the door and run like hell. "I have others to see Mr. Clair, so please excise me for the night."
He waited the scent of fear left with the older guy before he turned back to Isabel's room for the moment, seeing Sam Grace once more in the room and a wordless cup of coffee was put in his hands by Sam with a tight smile on his boyish face for the moment, "Ya we heard Cole, kinda hard not too….."
Grace had taken his seat and was holding Isabel's hand in her own, smiling and talking something wordless of a memory back from high school about shopping and what ever moments she had shared with her friend. It was the sort of wordless bound the wolves had as a pack, and it was formed here with just them four of them. Yet Grace only closed her eyes a moment in trying to fight back a tear or too before Isabel hand tightened on hers', gasping a bit enough for Cole and Sam to move in steps to lean on the bed. Eyes fluttered a bit, trying to wake up and pull away from the sleep that held her body and mind.
"Come on Cupper, come back!" Cole growled it a moment, moving in to take her other hand, giving the sleeper real to follow with their voices.
"Why would I want to come back and look at your ugly mug Cole…"she mutter, her throat dryer then the LA air. Blinking a bit in the lights of the room as everything ran and blurred but she was awake at least.
Grace blinked a few tears back, lightly holding her friend's hand as Cole smiled for the first time in hours a real smile with Sam mirroring it softer, she had come back and beat back the odds once more set out against them all. Yep was Isabel one of the strongest in the room. "So what happened to me?" She asked, looking around as her world cleared up in sight.
Sam looked at the other male, seeing Cole take in a deep breathe and moving to get some water for the girl to sip so she could talk a bit better, "The tumor is worse than they thought back in Cali, made you have a seize and passed out Isabel. You don't have months, you got weeks…."
Samuel for the moment hated Cole would just blast her like this after waking up but somehow he also knew it was the best way for Isabel to let her mind form around the hard truth. One thing she had never been mostly was the kind for a white little lie but it also met one thing that could save her life and bothered same: make her a wolf. He hated the idea of seeing his friends become wolves and looses them, like when Grace had shifted early this spring and now wanted one full winter as a wolf. Yes they seemed to have a cure so why not stay Grace but what had been talked about in the lunch room of the hospital made sense to him even if he hated and if she become a wolf, having Grace and Cole with her to watch and protect her for the winter would be the better opinion for all three of them.
Taking those moments, Isabel took a few deep breaths to study her in hearing the blunt news but Cole never beat around the push when it came to things like this. They watched a moment, Grace still holding her hand and smiling but it forced, Sam looking out the window with a far away look in his amber eyes while Cole only waited, his arms not crossed.
"Well, guess we no time to waste," Isabel took a deep breath, things had gone to a do or die sort in short of hours. "Let's get me out of here huh?"
Cole for the moment smirked, thinking of just doing the window jump and running for the car. Yah it was tempting if anything but much as he liked the action of the plan: she needed at least a night in the ward to make sure she could move. Having her pass out again would give all of em a way to early heart attack. Just leaning over to plant a wet kiss on her forehead made the Ice Queen wrinkle her nose at the once rock star.
"I'll take that as a no huh?" She huffed, glaring at him best she could with the way to dark spots around her eyes and even growling at him.
Cole Laughed, "For someone not a werewolf yet you sure act like one! Stay here and give us 24 hours Caili girl! I think also Sam and Grace need some "me time".
Looking out the window, she still had nose wrinkled but leaned back into the pillows in a defeat as Cole took his cue to leave as the call for visitors hours spoke out. The sun was setting and soon the coldness would rip is human skin away to the wolf just under it, yearning to be free if just for a night of all this drama. Waving a good bye, he did a peace sign as Isabel flips him off with an all too sharp smile.
Time was getting short for both the humans and the wolves as winter was soon to touch the land.
