Chapter 7: New Kid in Town
The tall wooden doors were open by the time I found my way downstairs and a cold breeze filled the halls. I've never been so happy to be cold. I got through the first day. It was never ending and I'm exhausted.
Dakota found me at lunch (don't ask me how) and sat with me. She talked non-stop about which classes she liked, which ones she hated and how she felt about the teachers. I swear I almost fell asleep. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice gesture and all but I'm not sure how I feel about her. I'm more of a keep to myself kinds of person.
Spencer got off of work early to pick me up. For once I was happy to see him. I got into the car, threw my bag into the back. "How was your day?" He began driving away.
"It sucked." I sighed. "Worse than I thought it would." The car in front of us cut right into our lane. Idiot! Spencer barely noticed. If he did then he was completely calm. My mom would have laid on her horn. We turn the corner, then again and again. That's when I noticed the car was strangely quiet. For once Spencer wasn't trying to make conversation. I looked over at Spencer. He was anxiously tapping the steering wheel with his finger. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong but-" I knew it. "one of my friends that I work with wants to meet you. She hasn't gotten a chance too yet. I tried to tell her that today might not be the best day but she was quite insistent. She's coming over for dinner tonight with Morgan."
In Spencer's defence he sounded sorry. And aside from the school choice he's been okay. When I was told I was going to be leaving with an FBI agent I thought for sure he would turn out to be a crazy drill sergeant. Spencer was the opposite.
"That's okay." I can suck it up for one night.
"Are you sure?" He asks, shocked. "I can call and explain that you're not up to it."
"No, it's fine." I reassure him. "So which friend is this?"
"Her name's Penelope Garcia. She helped JJ and Emily with your room." Spencer pulls into the parking lot. Apartment, sweet apartment. "They won't be here until six so you have time to relax. If you want."
"Won't you need help with dinner? Unless you're trying to kill everyone then I'll power nap for two hours." Spencer must have found that amusing because he grinned for a spilt second.
"They're going to pick up take-out on their way." He holds the apartment door open for me.
I nod, "Smart decision."
"Am I really that bad?" He asks, slightly offended.
"Do you really have to ask that question?" I answered back. "Call me when they get here. I'll be in my room."
Wait, did Spencer and I have an actual conversation? Huh? Well that was unexpected. I try not to think too much about it. So what if I'm beginning to get comfortable around him? That doesn't mean I want to be here. Does it?

It's almost six o'clock and I'm setting the dinner table when the door knocks. Spencer hurry's over and open's it but not all the way. I can hear him whispering but I can't make out what he's saying. It's probably something along the lines of 'Don't scare her'.
"Spencer Reid, move away from the door. You have kept me from this girl way too long! Don't think I won't hurt you." A young blonde woman with glasses pushes past Spencer. She's wearing a pink floral dress with matching heels and pink fluffy things are in her hair. "Oh my, look at you! Reid, you didn't tell me how adorable she is." I can't do anything to stop her from engulfing me in a hug, her warm arms squeezing me tight. I feel my body tense and I look over at Spencer. 'Help', I mouth.
Morgan is laughing as hands Spencer the food and he takes off his coat, "Baby Girl, what did we talk about when we drove over here?"
She lets go. "Sorry. I got carried away. You're so cute and you're Reid's sister and I've been waiting for months to meet you. Which for me is really, really, really long."
"I didn't know I was that special." I joked.
We all sat down at the table and unloaded the Chinese food Morgan and Garcia brought. It smelled delicious and you could see the stream rolling off the food. I spooned great big heaps of fried rice onto my plate as well as whatever those noodle things are called and some vegetables.
"Alright spill." Penelope insisted, "How was your first day of school?"
"Umm…." I ponder my answer. "I beginning to think the Eagles wrote 'New Kid in Town' about me."
Morgan almost chokes on his food, "Man," He says as he laughs, "That bad?"
"They don't get new kids. Apparently I've been the talk of the town for a couple weeks. This one guy in my English hired some investigator to look into me."
Spencer finished chewing his mouthful of rice, "You didn't tell me that."
I shrugged, "Doesn't really matter."
"So he doesn't know anything?" Penelope asked.
"Oh no, he does." I corrected. "He calls me Jailbird."
"That makes no sense." Penelope replied, annoyed. "You weren't actually arrested and didn't go to jail."
"True but I was wanted by the police. That's close enough for him. And I might have pissed off the popular girl."
"What happened?" Morgan asked.
"I called her a bitch." They stopped and all gave me the same look, a cross between you didn't and why would you do that. "What?" I leaned back in my chair. "She is a bitch. Now she hates me."
"Well, you really had an eventful day." Penelope joked.
"What did you guys do?" I was full so I put my plate in the sink.
"Paper work." Morgan sighed. "We did a couple of consultations too."
"That sounds boring as hell." I shake my head.
"A little. The job isn't action all the time." Morgan admits.
"Though, my chocolate thunder cat makes it look like it is." Penelope says romantically.
"Umm... chocolate thunder cat?" I question, hesitantly.
"They like to flirt back and forth a lot." Spencer explains.
"I just had an amazing idea." Penelope exclaimed. "We should take Kylie to see the monuments on the weekend!"
"That would be fun. I was really young when I was them so I don't remember them all." I sat back down in my chair.
"Wait, you've been to Virginia before?"
Oh no, why did I say that? Stupid, stupid, Kylie. And I was having fun too. They're all waiting for my answer. I'm trying to think of a lie and I can't. This is the worst time to freeze up. "I used to live here." The truth utters my mouth.
"You lived here?" Spencer asks. "When?"
"When I was six, for two years." Too much information.
"Oh, which part of Virginia were you in?" Penelope asks. Great, that's the last thing I need; them asking questions.
"I don't remember." I lie. They don't buy it.
"Were you with your mom?" They've stopped eating and are completely focused on me now. I feel like I'm dissected by a science class. I shift in my chair. I have to be more careful with what I say. "What kind of job did she have?" I'll kill you if tell, that voice speaks in my head. I haven't heard it in so long.
"I don't remember." I repeat. I'll kill you if you tell.
"I'm sorry. I know your mom was your mom but please do not tell me she left you with some stranger. When you guys were in Boston I was going through your mom's credit card charges and you guys never stayed in Virginia for two years." Penelope says with concern.
I open my mouth to speak and close it again. I'll kill you if you tell.
"What the hell am I doing?" I push my chair back. "I'm not supposed to be sitting here making friends with you guys. You're just gonna ask questions that you have no business knowing the answer to."
"Whoa, calm down." Morgan said. "We're just trying to get to know you." They all looked shocked at my outburst.
"Well don't." I left the kitchen and went to my room, slamming the door behind me. Nobody followed, thankfully. That was a disappointing ending to the evening.
I collapse on my bed and put my headphones in. Shuffle: Pigeon Camera by The Tragically Hip. Why not?
The music doesn't distract me. I wish it would. My breath quickens. I can feel my lungs trying to keep up. I'll kill you if you tell. You hear me? I can't make it stop. I'll kill your mom too. Then maybe I'll leave you alive so you can be alone with no one care about you. I scream into a pillow and force the tears away.
I will not tell.
