Away Mission To Terra Beta

Part 62 (Meetings and Humor) PG-13

Elizabeth Cutler looked at Martok he was now sitting across from the Ambassador Soval and Lt. Maryweather. Dr. Phlox was here and as was Commander Shran. She had no idea way her presence had been requested at such an important meeting but she was honored to attend. She listened quietly as the others discussed a course of action.

Amanda Cole could not believe she was in officer land again. What was it was she cursed? Worse yet she was seated right next to Soval. What was it about that cranky old Vulcan that set her so on edge. She hated to admit it but she was really glad he was here. She always felt safer when he was around. After all he had three times the experience of any of the Enterprise crew. His brow rose as if he caught that stray thought. Amanda blushed. I hate it. Sometimes I could swear he can read my mind. She blushed and Soval looked away.

If only you knew child. he thought. Soon I will have to explain it and you will hate me for it. He looked back at the group and said "Is there any news?"

Travis answered "No Ambassador but with your arrival and Commander Shran's our survival rate just increased."

Shran humped. "Well at least the Pink skin will owe me again and your father Mortak as well."

Martok used to Shran laughed "More like you will be even Blue devil. As I recall Captain Mortak saved you from that female Orion-"

"Ok we are cleared and equal." Shran said blushing a deep blue. Clearly not wanting the story to get out to the humans and Vulcan Ambassador.

Soval made a mental note to look into that. It might prove beneficial to find out how the Orions had captured such a skilled Andorian. Allies or not information was always useful.

Travis bit back his laughter.

"I heard you humans had been caught as well." Soval said

"He is right Sir. "Corporal Cole said "All the men except Commander Tucker fell under the witches spell."

Travis blushed as did Kelby and the other males.

Liz Cutler glared at the MACO. "It was pheromones they had no protection."

"Indeed." Dr. Phlox said "Even I had issues with them. Even the human women reacted somewhat."

It was Amanda's turn to blush as she recalled almost throwing herself at the Commander.

"Shall we return to the subject of saving our crews." Travis said

Part 63 (Escape) R

Melanie moved with stealth following her mother in law. They had to move quickly to save the youngest children. She looked at moved along the Duras ship and found the way to the shuttle.

"You must get the children away. I will try to find Malik and create a diversion."

"My daughter you to must survive."

Melanie looked into her elders eyes. "I must try to save my son. Save my youngest children and I will seek to give you time to escape. Perhaps if you do you may yet find a way to save Talla for Malik."

"I will do all I can to preserve our house. Talla fought them hard until they knocked her out. She is a worthy mate for my grandson."

Melanie nodded as she slipped away to do what she could.

Mortak was not a patient Klingon. He has used what little he had.

"We must have the supplies now." He grabbed the colonel and forced him to rise.

"I can have the metals for you. There is a small forge near by. It should have enough iron and steel. I do not understand about these crystals you seek."

Mortag caught his brother's arm. "He is offering what they have."

Mortak growled but sat down. "Forgive me."

Montoya straighten his jacket as he was released. "Your family is in danger. I would act the same."

Mortak looked at him then away. Archer was surprised at this. He had been certain it was all about to blow up in his face.

Mortag removed a large diamond from his pocket. "This is the crystal type we need."

"Wow." Trip said "I gota agree we need one like that too."

Dona Maria slipped out the back. She was not doing this as herself. She rode up and said "Is this what you all need."

They turned and saw the Queen of Swords toss down a bag. It fell open and Montoya cursed. It was the diamonds and emeralds the Queen had liberated from his safe six months ago. It had been enough wealth for him to escape this backward place.

Part 64 (Figuring it out) Pg-13

Trip moved forward and smiled as he picked up several crystals. These might work. "Mortag this would work for our engines but I do not know about yours?"

Mortag moved forward and picked up an emerald. "This could work. The others are useless to small. Maybe the red stone. I am not an engineer. Captain?"

"Jader take a look." Captain Martok said

The Engineer moved forward. "Yes Captain it could work. The smaller ones maybe. I would have to rig something."

Trip grinned "Can I help? Whatcha need?"

"You said you need metals. "The Queen said "Dona Theresa has a smithy here. Maybe he could help you."

"That's right remember Colonel Hector helped with the making of the extra strops the troopers needed." Captain Grisham said. "We sent them a lot of extra iron and steel."

Captain Martok nodded. "We have several hull breaches. This metal could perhaps be used. While it is not as strong as the normal Tritium it could be substituted."

"Sir, I have a suggestion." Malcolm said " Now I am no engineer. But I was thinking what if you took the stronger metals from the interiors of the ship."

Trip grinned "That isn't a bad idea Malcolm. " Trip said "We could take the original materials from non-critical areas and move it to the breaches. We could then replace the damaged materials. The steel could go in areas that are not vital for safety. I know it could work on Enterprise. That was my back up plan but…. I did not want to leave any exposed areas if I could help it."

Jadar nodded. "Yes it could work. Interior hallways could be used. " He rubbed his chin clearly calculating. "Yes it would work. The metal workers here seem skilled. It is not their work I would worry about only that the metals are weaker."

"Is there any way to make it stronger?" Archer asked. "Maybe mix the damaged pieces in?"

"Whatcha mean Captain?" Trip asked.

"Well since you are going to be making these pieces from scratch maybe beam the damaged pieces down. Melt them with the steel."

T'Pol did some mental calculations. "The Captain is right it would increase safety. While it would not meet Star Fleet specs it would be stronger then just plain steel."

"I agree with the Vulcan it would not be Klingon standards but the difference would be less more in line with an old style bird of prey's armor." Jadar said

Martok nodded. "Let us see what we can do. Contact the ships and let them know to shuttle down our materials."

"Wait…." Archer said "Beam them down. Have them shuttle it to Enterprise and beam it down it be safer. Your ship could stay cloaked then. They know about us but not your second ship I think that be a good advantage to have."

Martok looked at Archer. " Agreed. This will place your ship at risk?"

"Not really if yours is watching our back." Archer replied. "I mean you can see them right?"

Martok grinned "I like you human you have courage. Yes as long as they do not cloak."

"Well we will be safe enough then. I mean I have seen Klingons fight and frankly I would rather you be on our side." Archer said.

Mortak stood a little straighter pleased with the compliment. He knew that this human more then most knew conflict. "We will keep you safe."

"Well then all we gotta do is fix the ships and then get your family back. Piece of cake." Trip said.

Malcolm rolled his eyes at that. "Well given we have these warriors with us I pity the Romulans. Captain if I may speak with your security chief maybe we can arriange security here and come up with some possible plans to secure your family."

Archer nodded and Mortak said " Agreed, I think maybe the Duras will bring them planet side thinking to lure us out."

Colonel Montoya frowned. "Well then the Pueblo would be the logical place to secure them. Maybe using the jail. "

The Queen smiled. "Let us hope they are so foolish."

"Yes, It would be simpler." Grisham agreed.

That got him a glare by the colonel who knew how often the Queen had liberated various prisoners."

Marta and Robert looked away chuckling.

Part 65 (Step into my parlor said the spider) R

Sartell listened as the Romulan centeurian gave his report. So some of Mortak's people were here on this world. Perhaps even Mortak himself. This was good news indeed. He leaned back and sipped the wine he had found. It was tepid and weak but it would do. He warmed his feet by the fire. "Tolok lock the humans in that large building in the center of the square. Tell them if they try to escape they will all be terminated. This could be useful news. Tell Duras to come here if he is not to drunk on that swill from the tavern."

"At once sir." The officer said saluting. He had to agree the Klingons were worse then Targs drinking that swill. He was glad he would not have to eat with them. The Commander had allowed he and the other Romulans to stay in this dwelling with them. The human cook was preparing food for them. This place was not bad for a primitive house. The Klingons had opted to take the human barracks. Tolak shuttered they were filthy and dark. This place at least was warm with the fires.

Duras ate the meat that had been prepared. It was not to bad even if the human had burnt it. But then humans liked cooked food. He had been pleased to find a container of what he thought must be local Gaah. It was soft and slimy and did not bite back but it was palatable. He and his crew were eating it and drinking the weak local ale. At this rate it would take two or three barrels for him to get drunk.

Miguel cringed at the animals in his tavern. He watched as they ate Juan's worms. He was almost ill at that. They however seemed to like the slimy things and he had been forced to send the boy to dig more. He was very afraid but did not wish to anger these things. He cringed as one of the pointed eared devil's walked in. These creatures were even more frightening as they had discipline. The others the ones called Klingon's reminded him of the savages in the hills. These were more like trained mercenaries. Somehow he feared them more; but they were keeping the others from killing them outright and for that he was slightly grateful.

Tolak came into the tavern and forced the discus from his face the loud singing and bleching was almost as bad as the heavy drinking and betting. Games of chance were being played with several of the human females as the stakes. He walked to the Klingon captain.

"Captain Duras. The Commander would speak with you." Tolak said. His tone was respectful if his face hide contempt. Miguel noted this and decided it might prove useful. Perhaps his years of being around and under Colonel Montoya's heel might be the thing that saved his life. He knew how to gather intelligence and how to keep a low profile. Yes , he would do this and hopefully the Queen would find a way to save them. He knew she would have her work cut out because the Yammi would be coming to avenge their chief and the pueblo would pay as well as these things for he and his wife had died here. Miguel doubted the Yammi would care as they would but the pueblo down and kill everyone. If only they could get word to the Yammi that they too wanted justice and revenge.

Duras rose and took a long drink from his mug. "He wants me huh… I shall see him then. We shall see what is so important to interrupt my meal. You there boy keep this meat hot. There is nothing worse then cold burnt meat. "

Juan jumped up. "Yes sir." He came and took the meat and carried it to the fire.

Miguel watched and could tell that these people may be working together but there was no friendship there. Bandito's for certain.

The men left and the singing , drinking and gambling resumed.

Tolak decided to stop this because these humans belonged to his captain. He would not wish them damaged by the Klingons. He motioned several of his guards to go enter the game. It would not take much to win the humans. The Klingons could barely stand they were so drunk. The men shrugged but followed his order. After all he was a hard officer and one did not wish to get on his bad side.

Duras entered the dwelling and went to Sartell. "What is it you want …. "He belched "Commander."

Sartell looked up and rose. He was not happy. He struck out and knocked Duras to his knees. "I am no subordinate to be treated with lack of respect. "

Duras looked up and rose laughing. "I wondered if you would grow a pair."

Sartell glared and forced himself to regain control. He dearly wanted to gut this worthless piece of flesh. Drawing a breath he said "Mortak is here. "

"What?" Duras shouted. He spit on Sartell who stepped back and wiped his face with a cloth. "We must draw him out. Bring his family here."

"Why?"

Sartell wondered how drunk his ally was. "For bait fool. " He looked at his centurion "Find a human A young ,strong male. He will carry the message to Mortak."

"How do you know this human will know where to go?" Duras said walking to a decanter and pouring a drink.

Sartell glared but did not reprimand him. Clearly Duras was not as drunk as he wished to appear. "Because the fat human lead the people out. It is my theory that Mortak may attempt to use these humans as fodder against us. The human messenger will likely know where to go. For surely these beings have a gathering place."

Duras drank and then rubbed his chin. He looked at the Romulan. "The boy in the tavern. He would be a good choice. His family runs the business in this town. My guess is they know everyone."

Sartell smiled and he recalled why he had chosen Duras as an ally. He could be wickedly shrewd. "Agreed. Duras bring the prisoners."

"They must be secure. We will lock them behind those bars. That brig they have." Duras said.

Sartell considered it. "It seems secure enough with guards. Agreed. Tolak get the boy. Duras shuttle them down and secure them. The boy can deliver the message. We will draw him to us and if he does not come we will kill slowly and painfully them one by one."

Duras began to laugh. "I am glad you have a plan Romulan. It would almost be worth his not coming to break those bitches of his family. We can start with his wife. I am told he is fond of the hellion."

Sartell nodded because he to hated the women. Melanie had landed a kick to his groin when he sought information. He would enjoy destroying her and her children.

The centerian returned with Juan.

"Boy do you wish your family to live?" Sartell asked.

Juan nodded.

"Answer me boy."

"Si senior…Yes sir."

"Good then you will carry a message for me. Go to where your people are. If there is a man there a stranger called Mortak tell him if he wished to see his family alive he will surrender himself and his people to me in three days time."

"Sir what if I can not find him?" Juan said.

"You have until then to deliver the message. If he does not come it will be your family next to them when they die. Incentive to find him. Go run along."

Juan trembled but he had to have the best chance to save his mother , father and brother and sisters. "Sir… this is important to you yes?'

Sartell struck him for his impertinence and then said "Yes it is."

"Then may I have a horse sir and water. They may be a day away. It is the closest place they might go because it has water. Please sir. I do not wish to fail my family and it is to far for me to make in the time you give. He would not get the message if I die in the dessert."

Duras laughed. "Smart boy. Give him the beast. After all we want the targ."

"Very well. But if you run or try to betray me I will kill them all slowing and hang their pieces from the tavern ceiling." Sartell said

"We can use them for target practice. "Duras said laughing. The little ones should be a challenge to hit."

Juan wanted to kill them all but he swallowed and forced himself to appear humble. "Yes sir. May I go?"

"Off with you boy. Three days." Duras said laughing.

Juan ran out he had been certain his father had been killed earlier but he lived. Now he had to save him and the others. He was followed by Tarlok who ordered the guards to get him a beast to ride. Juan grabbed a canteen and filled it with water. Grabbing a coat he mounted the saddled animal. He felt a little guilty as the beast had not been tended to. He patted it and silently promised to make it up to the animal if he saved his family. He mounted and rode out uncaring it was dark and dangerous outside.
