"Well?" Trish asks, hands on her hips. She had just put on the sparkly dress her red-headed friend had provided for her. "How do I look?"
"Eh. Decent," Dez shrugs, after shaking off his actual thoughts. Trish looks stunning. Admitting that would take everything he's got, though, and he isn't quite up to that challenge just yet.
Trish glares at him, she really needed positive feedback at this moment. "You really needa learn how to give a girl a compliment."
"Only if you learn how to take one," Dez crosses his arms, smirking slightly. Trish starts shifting a bit, seeming almost – distraught? Insecurity isn't really something Trish would ever feel, is it? Dez's smirk drops, quickly molding into a frown. The concern on his face is apparent as he walks over and gingerly places a hand onto her shoulder. "You okay, Trish? You know, I was just kidding – you look great! You should totally wear this on your date tonight!" He gives her a nervous smile, unsure if he's really helping. Comforting girls isn't his strong suit, but at least he tries.
He didn't like seeing Trish upset. He loved irritating her, sure – but making her genuinely sad? He couldn't stand that.
"I just wanna impress him, Dez. It's been a while since a guy's asked me out," Trish rubs her arm, speaking of Lucky. "I just…I guess I'm afraid that he's just gonna be…Y'know…Another Trent." Sure, she's been in a relationship or two since Trent, and they did not end as badly, but the worry was always there. Trish usually only ever spilled insecurities like these to Ally. Ally, and no one else. However, Austin and Dez have become a lot closer to her these past couple years. Trish figures she should take a shot at trusting them with at least a few secrets.
Dez winces a bit, hearing Trent's name. Having her first love turn out to be such a jerk must have been heart-wrenching. Not that he would really know. Without much thought, he leans down to give her a comforting hug. One that she doesn't return, but a meaningful hug nonetheless. Words of comfort don't seem to be coming to him, so hopefully a hug would suffice.
Trish pries his arms off of her, putting herself back together, "Alright, alright, enough mushy stuff. Let's start practicing your act." She picks up his magician's hat and sniffs it, then scrunches up her face in disgust. "Why does this smell like wet dog …And honey?"
"Oh! I sprayed it with that 'Sweet Puppy' cologne I made Austin a while back," Dez comments, all the while pulling out more items from his magic kit. Wands, a cape, a deck of cards, and lots of glitter. More than was really necessary.
"You kept that?" Trish questions, referring to the cologne - the disgusted look on her face still present.
"Well, yeah," he smiles, and chuckles a little. "It's a reminder."
"Of what, exactly?" Trish raises a brow. "Of how bad you are at making fragrances?"
Dez rolls his eyes, "Uh, no. It's a reminder of the time Trent got covered in bees on the Wanda Watson Show, duh." He chuckles a little more, remembering the whole fiasco. He hoped that lovely memory would get at least a smile out of Trish.
It did.
"C'mon, whack-a-doodle, let's practice your dumb act already," Trish states in a pleasant demeanor, smile staying on her face. That was certainly a great memory.
After several test runs of their act, Dez decides that they are ready for a mini-performance in front of their friends and family at Sonic Boom. He starts setting up the stage, as Austin and Ally set up the chairs for the small audience. Trish sits on one of the chairs, reading a magazine until she had to get on stage. A few strangers wander in, as well, curious as to what was going on in the store.
"We're not late are we dear?" Donna, Dez's mother, asks her son as she enters the store. Trailing not far behind her, Dez's father, Dennis, and sister, Didi, join them and take theirs seats. Chuck is present, as well, and takes a seat next to Didi, who – much to Dez's dismay – is still dating him.
"Actually, you're early!" Dez exclaims. He starts pulling some fake wands out of this large duffel bag that he had brought along with him. He hands them to his family members, as well as Austin and Ally and to the few strangers coming in. "You all get complimentary wands for attending tonight's performance. But, uh…Careful with those. They're supposed to be fake, but I think one of them might've made all the carrots in my bag disappear…"
"That was the rabbit, Dez," Trish states, her eyes still glued to the magazine.
"Ohhhh…" he pulls the rabbit out of the bag, and everyone in the room falls silent, giving him a concerned look. "Don't worry, this bag has air holes," he explains. They then continue their chatter amongst one another.
"So, are you going to pull this little guy out of a hat for your act?" Ally asks her tall, freckled friend. She makes her way over and starts petting the little rabbit.
"What? Oh, no, this is Bartholomew. He wanted to see my act, too," Dez smiles and hands the rabbit over to Ally. "Watch him for me?"
"Uh, sure…" Ally says, carefully taking the critter into her arms, a little weirded-out by the fact that he brought the rabbit without needing it for his act. Not too weirded-out, though. This is Dez, after all.
"Oh, my gosh! Bart, buddy!" Austin yells, running over in a childlike manner. He starts petting Bartholomew, still sitting in Ally's arms. Ally lets out a little giggle, her partner's childish ways never ceased to amuse her. Adorable. She gently puts the rabbit into Austin's arms. He seemed like he wanted to hold the little guy more than she did.
After everything had been set up, Dez beckons Trish to come onto the stage beside him. "Trish!"
Silence. She seems extremely engulfed in the article she's reading, blocking out everything else.
"Trish! C'mon up!" he tries again. Still no reply and Dez grows impatient. Just as Ally starts walking over to nudge her to get on stage, Dez throws a plastic wand at Trish to get her attention. Ally's eyes widen, in concern for Dez. He actually dared to throw something at her – while she's reading her favorite magazine of all times?!
Did he have a death wish?
Ally bites her lip, and Austin watches nervously, still holding onto Bartholomew.
"Hmm?" Trish says, calmly. "Oh, yeah! Sorry…" she gets up, sets the magazine on her chair, then goes up on stage to join her red-headed friend. No shouting, no complaints – not even a glare? Ally wonders if Trish is sick, and Austin holds his mouth open, in astonishment. Perhaps in all this time him and Ally had been too busy for Trish and Dez, they became better friends with each other?
Trish's parents, Eileen and Javier De La Rosa show up and take their seats, much to Trish's surprise. Her little brother JJ follows them in, as well. She didn't tell her parents, or her brother, about the show - how did they know? She glances up at Dez, who was smiling back at her.
"You're welcome," he winks at her, and then prepares himself for his act. Trish readies herself to assist him.
"Welcome, one and all! Prepare to be blown away by the fantastic feats of…" he pauses, for dramatic effect, of course. "…The amazing Dezmo!" And with that, he swishes his large, fancy cape around himself as a puff of smoke disperses about him. The cape drops to the ground – but no Dez in sight! Gasps could be heard from the small audience. Even Trish was blown away. They hadn't practiced this, the first part was supposed to be a card trick!
"Ta daaaa!" after a few silent moments, Dez reveals himself, arms spread out, now up at the top of the stairs. They all turn to him, looks of shock upon their faces.
How the heck did he pull this off? Trish wonders, her mouth agape. Everyone starts applauding. This certainly isn't the act they were expecting.
"Thank you, thank you," Dez proceeds to bow dramatically, then jumps over the railing – landing quite gracefully. He then returns to the stage. "For my next trick, I'm going to need the help of my lovely assistant, Patricia Maria de la Rosa," he announces, rolling his r's a little over-extravagantly. Trish raises a brow at him, shrugs, but agrees.
"Sure. What'cha need, Dez?" Trish asks him, trying to hide her amazement from his previous trick.
"Uh, that's The Amazing Dezmo, to you, Missy," Dez flips his hair, in an arrogant manner. Trish just gives him an un-phased stare.
"Yeah, whatever. What do you need me to do, Amazing Dorkmo?" Trish sneers, earning her a glare from Dez. He pulls a deck of cards out from his pocket. "Need me to pick a card?" Trish asks. This one was supposed to be the first part of the act, the one she was actually prepared for.
After shuffling the deck nice and thoroughly, he hands it to Trish. "Pick a card, any card – and don't show it to me." Trish nods, doing so. She thought this trick was pretty lame, honestly. Her brother had showed it to her many a time. Dez covers his eyes with his hands as Trish shows the card she chose to the audience. She sticks it back into the deck, and taps Dez on the shoulder. He uncovers his eyes, takes the deck – and shuffles it, yet again.
"Is…This your card?" Dez asks, pulling a card out from the deck, suavely.
Trish raises a brow at him, "Uh…No. No, Dez, it isn't." Okay, so this act seemed to be backfiring. A few boos were heard from the audience, mostly from JJ and Chuck– but also from Austin. However, Austin's booing was less mean-spirited, and more playful.
Dez pouts, "Aw, man!" He pulls out another card from the deck. "This one, maybe?" he starts looking very nervous. Trish worries, hoping he wouldn't have a nervous breakdown.
"No…Sorry, uh…Dezmo. It's not that one either." Trish watches as everyone in the audience starts to whisper amongst each other. She overheard a few louder individuals stating that they wanted to leave. Really? He did an amazing disappearing act, why are they going to leave after one failed card trick?
"Okay…It's this one, isn't it?" Dez pulls out a third card, biting his lip.
Trish takes a deep breath, seeing the look of worry on her friend's face. She did not want to bring him down, but everyone in the audience already knows what the card is. She couldn't lie to them. "I'm sorry, Dez…It's not."
Dez's eyes shift around, looking at the audience. Austin was no longer booing, rather looking extremely worried for his friend. Ally chewed on her hair nervously, knowing just how bad he must feel about messing up. A few of the strangers start getting up to leave, as well. Chuck seemed to be amused by Dez's nervous display, smiling throughout the ordeal. Didi elbows him sharply in the side, chiding him to be more supportive of her brother.
"Wait!" Dez calls out. "Okay, this is weird. I coulda sworn I had this trick all-figured out. I can do this! Please stay, let me do this." His eyes look glazed-over and his voice grows shaky.
"Dez, it's okay…Let's just move onto the next trick, huh?" Trish says softly, while squeezing his arm gently.
Dez lets out a deep sigh, then hands the deck back over to Trish. "Fine, but can you at least show me what your card really is?" Trish frowns. Dez's look of defeat hit a chord in her. Perhaps she could buy him some ice cream after the show to cheer him up?
"Sure," Trish shrugs, as she shuffles through the deck. "Hmm?" she shuffles through it a second time. "What…Where-? Where is it?" frustrated, she looks again – more carefully. The people that were getting up to leave take their seats again – wondering just what was going on. "Dez…The card's not here."
"What?!" Dez gives her a shocked look. "What do mean? Did it fall out of the deck or something?" They both start looking around, as did the audience.
Dez stops, turning back to the audience. He points at his father, Dennis. "Dad, what's that in your shirt pocket?" Dez bends his index finger in a beckoning motion, and a card lifts itself out of his father's pocket, then shoots over into Dez's hand. Dez smiles, turning back to Trish – whose expression is flooded with awe. This was all planned.
"Is…This your card, Trish?" he smiles, showing it to her, and then to the audience.
"What…How did-? That wasn't-!" Trish stutters. This certainly isn't the card trick they had practiced. "Y-yes. That's the card, Dez." Trish feels more like she is part of the audience rather than his assistant at this point.
The small audience roars into applause. Not just at his trick – but also the fantastic charade he had performed for them. He genuinely looked like he was going to crack from nervousness – but it was all planned out.
"Thank you, thank you. You're all too kind," he winks over at Trish as he bows at the audience. Her look of awe suddenly changed into one of anger. She storms over to Dez and stops once toe-to-toe with him. She gives him a look that could kill, but he just smiles back – really loving how irritated he was able to make her.
Until she stomps on his foot.
"Never scare me like that again, you jerk! I thought you were gonna crack!" she then walks away, still on the stage, but as far away from him as she could get. She crosses her arms, continuing to glare at him from across the stage. And to think, I was gonna buy him ice cream, she scolds herself mentally.
He howls out in pain, hopping on one foot – which earns him a good laugh from the audience. He chuckles over at Trish. Sure, that was painful, but it was Trish's way of showing that she cares.
The rest of the act went on – with many more surprises – and several more hits from Trish. The act ended up completely different from anything they had practiced.
However, she had to admit – Dez is quite the magician!
Hope y'all liked this! Sorry for taking so long, I wanted to describe at least two of the acts out, but I had trouble figuring out what they would be.
I'll try to get chapters up sooner. c:
