Author's Note: This chapter deals with the events in S1 concerning the case involving a rapist and his victim. Let me say that I in no way condone rape in any shape way or form. If this may upset you then please do not read this chapter.
Frustration
Meredith as a doctor and surgeon was well aware that frustrations could take many forms. There was anger and the resulting injuries, they usually ended up on her operating table. There was surliness that destroyed people's friendships' as it creates gulfs between people. There were other forms too just as damaging.
She could see her friend's frustration on his face. Meredith did not want it to fester, knowing how it could explode. "What's up?"
Her best friend looked up at her in shock. It was obvious he'd not heard her coming and that told her how bad he was.
Jackson sighed because he didn't know where to begin. He had come off a gruelling day's work. It was not a difficult day in the sense of his skills got tested. Oh no. There was none of that, just lots of people too stupid to wear a condom. To top off a crappy day - he had a text message from his mother. She was coming to town by tomorrow.
He said nothing, he just handed over the message. Meredith got it. If there was anyone in the world who did it was Meredith. She had a complicated relationship with her own mother. Meredith looked determined, she definitely had a plan in mind.
"Okay time to go to Joe's."
Jackson did not understand how the two things had a connection. Meredith hooked her arm with his and pulled him a long. She would not let him escape and mope on his own. He had to ask, "Why are you kidnapping me?"
Meredith snorted, "You my dear best friend need Tequilla!"
Jackson would love to argue with her logic. He couldn't. He would end up meeting his mom and her new toyboy with a hangover but it would be worth it. He would put up with the ensuing lecture as well.
Meredith went to Mark's office, choosing to gain reinforcements. She didn't want to give Avery any chance to weasel out and slope off home.
"Hey babe. Meet us at Joe's ... Jackson needs shots."
Jackson could hear the way the rest of the gang came on board with the plan. There would be no escape. If he was lucky then he might strike it lucky and enjoy the distraction.
Joe's was heaving. It was stunning to see just how many people you could fit into one bar. Meredith waltzed up to the bar with her natural confidence, "Joe my good man! I need shots ... lots of them and keep them coming."
It should have been that simple. In fact, Jesse was getting more and more into the plan when their beepers went off. They looked at the code and groaned.
"Ah come on." Mark moaned but knew it wouldn't change a thing.
Jackson sighed, it was now his turn to drag Meredith. They had to go as the code was the emergency one. "Keep them on ice Joe."
When they walked through the doors of the E.R they looked for someone to bring them up to speed. Derek saw the intern holding a transport transplant box looking angry at the world.
"Report Stevens."
She looked up, "Oh well. This rapist got his just deserts. The woman he attacked bit his penis clean off. So he beat on her and now they are both getting treatment."
Jackson and Meredith shared a look. She could get why the intern was mad. It was something all doctors wrestled with when they started practicing medicine. They were impartial or at least they should be. It was a harsh lesson to learn but they treated everyone no matter how repulsive the person. The simple fact of the matter is no matter how big the surgeon's ego - They were not Gods.
Derek kept looking at the way organ box, "What do you have there exactly?"
Steven's smirked, "Oh it's the guy's penis something about chain of evidence."
Addison sighed, seeing Chief Webber coming up to them. He could see by their faces that they were up to speed with events. He knew he had to make some quick decisions but went with his gut. "Derek and Addison take the woman. Mer', Jackson and Mark you take the guy. Let's see if you can't perform a minor miracle."
Derek sneered, "No one will cry if you can't Mark."
Meredith didn't say anything, knowing her friends could still get mad over the world. It was sweet in a way there was more than one reason why her and Mark worked. There had been times where the world was a dark and twisty place.
"I hate this." Jackson sighed.
They had all agreed to have a vocal conversation in the OR. They had to remember they were Attendings and mentors to the Interns.
Meredith was sympathetic, "I hear ya. The guy is lower than dirt but we have a duty of care. We can't decide who gets to live and die."
Mark snickered but even so his hands didn't shake as they did amazing things. He was reattaching every blood vessel he could. "Yeah just think of my ego if I got to choose who to operate on?"
Avery snorted, "Say's the Plastic rock-star surgeon."
Mark shrugged and recited part of one of the first things a doctor should remember. "I will respect the privacy of my patients ... for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. Above all, I must not play at God."
Webber was in the observation room, which showed both OR's. He was not watching the surgeries. He had absolute faith in his surgeons to do their best. The five he had were the best. He was watching as the other lesson sunk in with his newbies.
He listened to the conversation between O'Malley and Yang. They were full of justifiable anger on behalf of the victim. That was one of the greatest burdens of being a doctor. You have to put aside personal feelings and just treat the patient if possible.
Yang heard the repetition of an oath that they have all sworn, "Damn I hate when I'm wrong."
Webber chuckled, "Make no mistake the idea of helping the patient repulses them just as much. They swore an oath and they have learnt you can't pick and choose ... We are not gods we don't get the right we have to let lawful justice work."
Yang finished apple. "Well it sucks but we get it."
Webber snorted, "This is not meant to be reassuring but it doesn't get any easier."
O'Malley was quick to show surprising insight. "I think if we do that is the day we should worry."
"You might be right O'Malley."
Meredith hated how she felt. They were all overtired but she knew they all had too much adrenaline in their system to sleep. She sighed, "Joe's might be out but I vote we all go back to ours and have Tequilla."
Jackson was more than happy to take refuge with Mark and Meredith. He had his own apartment but had a room in Meredith's place. His mother wasn't too fond of Meredith. She was always suspicious of their 'friendship' even after Meredith married Mark. It was stupid. You had to be blind not to see how much Meredith and Mark were in love.
Addison loved the idea, "I'm in."
And that was that.
