Chapter 7: Battle
Karin and Sora walked through the forest still on the search for any signs of Kasai or his henchman Kagemaru. It had been an entire year since they last ran into him. A lot of time had passed, but they were diligent in their efforts to find him and kill him. Karin had since then mastered her weapon and was more than capable of defending herself.
"Do you want to stop at a village today?" Karin asked her cousin.
"Yeah, if they don't freak out when they see that we're demon."
"If they know I'm a priestess, they'll let us stay." Karin suggested.
Sora shrugged. "Whatever you want to do."
"I want to stop at the village that's past these mountains. I overheard from travelers saying there was some strange activity going on there. Maybe it's Kasai."
"There's only one way to find out." Sora said.
They continued their quest towards their destination.
Inuyasha and the group were back at the village they resided in due to the lack of clues they had found. It seemed Kasai had vanished. Sango and Miroku took the time to spend time with their children and Kagome continued with her archery classes with Rin and the village children. Inuyasha still came and went. Searching the surrounding area on his own for some sign of distress. The inactivity was annoying to him and he just wanted to find something to do.
He returned from his search and entered his home. Kagome wasn't home so he figured she was out with the village children. He decided to take the time to go to Kikyo's grave and leave her some flowers. His feelings for her and his grief were a distant memory, but his respect for what she did for all of them never vanished.
He picked out some flowers from a garden and made his way up to her grave site. He placed the flowers on her tombstone and kneeled down to say a prayer for her. He sat there looking on, thinking of all the good times.
"I'm happy because of you. You opened up my heart and I was able to taste the feeling of being loved. Kagome is everything to me, and I thank you for everything you did for us."
He thought to himself. When Kagome left to her time after the Shikon Jewel was destroyed, he prayed a lot to bring her back. He prayed for a second chance. The day it came, the day she came back, he knew someone was listening.
He heard someone come up behind him and he turned to see Kaede. She walked up to Inuyasha and glanced over at the flowers he had put down for her.
"I appreciate you still coming up here to pay your respects to my sister. I know she meant a lot to ye." She said.
Inuyasha shrugged and followed her gaze to the flowers. "I can't act as if it didn't happen. I've moved on with my life and have a wonderful wife and daughter. I owe some to her, for her braveness."
They made their way back down and Inuyasha met up with Kagome walking back from her classes. She walked up to him and kissed him gently on the lips.
"Hey, I didn't know you were back. How was it?" She asked.
"Nothing. Just a few demon that needed some roughing up, but that's all."
"I wonder if Karin has run into something."
They went back home and Kagome started lunch.
Karin and Sora arrived at the village and found the village head's temple. Their goal was to get any information on the strange event the travelers spoke of.
"Hello there. May I speak with your village leader?" Karin asked.
"Who are you? You seem to be demon!" The man said and held up his spear.
Karin smiled. "Please, I do not wish to fight. I may be a demon, but I am also a priestess. I just wish to speak to your village head."
A man walked up to the guard and lowered his spear. He looked at Karin with a smile. "I am the head of this village. Tell me what brings you to my temple." He said.
"I am a traveling priestess, and this is my cousin. We are in travel searching for an evil demon who possesses the Shikon Jewel that has returned to this world. I heard there was strange events happening near your village and wished to learn more." Karin said.
"Yes, please come in. Guard stand down." He said. The man stepped aside and Karin and Sora walked in following the village head.
They walked into a large room and sat down on mats. "Would you like something to eat or drink? I can have my cook prepare you anything you need."
"No thank you kind man." Karin said.
"Very well. Where should I start?"
"What has been going on?" Sora asked.
"I had a young villager named Katsu came to me a few weeks ago and told me that a demon in the swamps outside this village came out and possessed a jewel that seemed to be broken. Fearing for his life, he hid behind a bush and dared not make a sound."
"Sounds weird, but how do we know it's the shikon jewel? Sora asked.
"Did he see anything else?" Karin asked the man.
"He said the demon spoke to someone, but he did not know who the other person was. He managed to hear a few words. It was something around the lines of the western lands. Something about the western lands."
Sora stood up and began to walk out the door. "What's wrong Sora?"
"The western lands. My father is the leader. I must go to my father." Sora said.
She walked outside and Karin looked at the man. "I thank you for your assistance."
She stood up and ran outside, but Sora was nowhere to be found. "Sora?!"
She felt the wind pick up and saw the trees start to tumble just outside the village. A man came running down that area and ran past Karin in a fright. "It's a demon!" He yelled out.
Karin ran in the direction and saw an enormous figure form before her eyes. She saw he cousin's dog form come to life and take off into the sky.
"Sora!" She called out.
The dog demon ignored her calls and flew away into the clouds. Karin began to run after her, but she knew she couldn't catch up.
"I'll have to go to my father." She said to herself and began to make her way to her home village.
Inuyasha and Kagome walked the village grounds enjoying the quietness of the day when their daughter comes crashing into view. Kagome filled with joy, runs to her for a long needed hug.
"Karin! My daughter, you've returned!" She took her into her arms and held her in a tight motherly embrace.
"Hello mother." She hugged her back.
"Have you finally returned?" Kagome asked.
"Father. Sora and I in our travels discovered that it's possible that during the time that Kasai has been gone, that he managed to learn a way to separate the jewel into separate pieces. They plan a surprise attack on the western lands that Sesshoumaru rules." Karin said.
"Where's Sora?" Inuyasha asked.
"She went home to warn Sesshoumaru of battle."
"We should get going ourselves. We need to get that jewel." Inuyasha said.
"I'll go get Sango and Miroku. We should get Ah-Un to make the trip faster." Kagome said.
Everyone got their weapons and readied themselves for battle. "Where will we find Sesshoumaru Inuyasha?" Kagome asked.
"To the west. I never really knew where he resides." Inuyasha admitted.
"Ah-Un, takes us to Sesshoumaru." Karin told the dragon demon.
They lifted off and headed towards the western lands, in hopes of finding everyone to be safe.
Sora arrived to her home and entered the castle. "Jaken! Where is my father?" She asked the small imp who sat sleeping.
Jaken jumped up seeming being caught doing something wrong and slapped himself on the ground in bow to Sora. "Lady Sora, I apologize, but I do not know where my lord is. Is there something I may assist you with?"
"You can assist me by getting off you lazy green ass and finding my father!" She kicked the small imp out of the way and continued into the halls.
"Yes my lady." Jaken said in a daze.
Sora found her father's room and made her way inside. Her father sat in deep thought before her. She slowly approached him and kneeled down next to him.
"Father. I must inform you…"
"Silence my child." He said.
"You're in danger!"
"I already have been informed there was a petty demon on his way to bring this Sesshoumaru to his knees."
"What? Who told you?"
"I have many demons who are loyal to this lord and have prepared to battle for me. I will not waste my time on a power hungry imbecile." He stated.
"This demon is not your average every day guy father. Your demon will fall. He holds the power of the Shikon Jewel."
"Sora, I assure you I am in control of the situation. All I ask of you is to stay in a safe place and stay away." He said.
"I want to help you fight father." She requested.
"I will not allow you. I do not wish for you or your mother to be in danger for my actions." He said and walked out of the room.
Sora turned and followed after him. She grabbed him by his arm and pulled on him to turn to her. "Father, please accept Inuyasha's help. Kagome must take the Shikon Jewel back."
Sesshoumaru did not respond, but nodded and turned to leave. Sora walked around the castle and found her mother.
"Mother, I assume you know what's going on?"
"Yes, I do. I intend to follow your father into battle whether he likes it or not. I can take care of myself." She said.
"We have to find Inuyasha and his friends. Kagome needs to destroy the shikon jewel."
"Very well, let us go." She said pulling a feather out of her hair.
Once outside they took into flight and headed towards their friends.
"Tell me where your lord Sesshoumaru is." Kasai held a defenseless guard by the throat pushing out an answer.
"Kill me, I will never tell!"
Kasai broke the weak demon's neck and dropped him to the ground. "Kagemaru, send in the demons. We shall move mountains for this man to be found, kill everyone who tries to stop you."
Kagemaru pulled out a small wooden flute and played it a high constant pitch. All of a sudden hoards upon hoards of demon came forward from beyond the mists. The sky became a pitch black as the demons covered the skies.
"Come forward my demon! Kill any in your path! Find me the lord Sesshoumaru and bring him down! Make me your leader and I shall reward you with a piece of the power of the sacred shikon jewel that I have returned!"
The demon attacked and seemed to be pushing back the army that Sesshoumaru had sent. Kasai could taste the victory. There was no way this could backfire. The greed for power demons lived with was an all too easy weakness Kasai could overpower.
Inuyasha and the rest traveled and noticed the sky darken and an ominous evil fall upon their senses. The air had a thick miasma which forced Kagome, Sango, and Miroku to wear protective gear on their faces.
"We need to land soon Inuyasha. This isn't safe." Miroku warned.
"I know that. I just don't see anything yet."
Karin looked around hoping to find something in the darkness and noticed someone flying through the miasma.
"Look!" She pointed out. They flew in the direction of the unknown flyer and noticed it was Sora and Kagura.
"Sora!" Karin called out.
They all went down and landed and met up. "What's happening?" Inuyasha asked.
"We don't know. Sesshoumaru stayed at the castle, but by the look of the skies and this miasma, he was probably forced to meet Kasai in battle." Kagura said.
"We have to help." Kagome said.
"Kagome, I want you to go back." Inuyasha said.
"I won't! You need me!" She argued.
Inuyasha held her hands in his. "I don't want to put you in danger, and this miasma is very dangerous. Please."
Kagome looked down at their entwined hands. She hated that he was right.
"Okay, but any sign that you're in danger and I will come." She said.
Inuyasha took her into his arms wishing he could kiss her, but aware that with the miasma, it was not possible.
"I will not be in any danger. I promise." He said.
She hopped on Kilala with Sango and Miroku and they took off away from the miasma. He turned and looked at his daughter. "I need for you to stay away. If we get a chance to take the jewel, you take it. That is all you are here for."
"Okay." She said.
They took off on Ah-Un following Kagura and Sora. They arrived at the castle and found no one on the grounds.
"He went to him." Kagura said.
They looked over and noticed a boar demon with blood spilling from his stomach. He limped towards them and fell to the ground before them. "Lady Kagura. The lord Sesshoumaru. He is in battle with a great demon. He comes with countless demons, we tried to destroy them, but their numbers are great." The boar demon spoke through deep breaths of pain. With those words, he took a few more breaths and then died at her feet.
They took flight into the direction from where the demon came in hopes of finding a less tragic scene at hand. Going through the darkness they heard noises of battle. They arrived at a cliff side and came upon a field full of bloodied bodies and fallen men.
Battle continued and nowhere to be seen was Sesshoumaru. All of a sudden a spears of light came barreling towards them through the cloud of miasma. They moved out of the way just in time and Inuyasha pulled out his sword ready to face the unseen attacker.
"Show yourself!" He called out.
A woman came into view and Karin noticed the glow of a half of the jewel they seeked. They had managed to split the jewel somehow.
"Father, she had a jewel. It's not the whole." Karin said.
"Who are you?" He asked.
"I am Amaya. It's been some time Inuyasha. I do thank your wife for saving my master's life back then when the wench dog demon injured him."
"You bitch!" He held his sword and with a sweep, he sent the wind scar tearing it's way to her.
A barrier formed around her and completely absorbed the blow of his sword. "You don't think I'm that naïve do you Inuyasha?"
Kagura lifted her fan and shot blades of wind towards her, but they too were absorbed.
"This jewel is really something else." She said with a sinister smile.
"I'm going to tear you to pieces for messing with my family." Inuyasha seethed in anger.
"Hahaha, we will see." She said and blew towards him more spears of light.
Inuyasha ran out of the way, but she kept at him trying to pierce him. Karin took out her bow and pulled back the spring to form an arrow of pure energy.
"I'll kill you bitch." She released the arrow and Amaya turned in shock. The arrow pushed against the barrier that enclosed her, but she held her hand against it and blew the purification arrow right back at her.
Kagura and Karin jumped out of the way. Karin was a bit shocked that it didn't work, but realizing her arrow almost broke the barrier was something.
"You little bitch! You just tried to kill me!" Amaya pulled out a sword and with a sweep released the wind scar.
Inuyasha watched in shock as his very own technique was being used to kill his daughter. Karin stood frozen as the blast began to tear at her.
"Karin!" He yelled out. His worst fears were playing out before him and he couldn't stop it. His daughter that he protected so much over her life, was being killed by his own technique by this woman.
"Say your goodbyes." Amaya said with a chuckle.
Karin began to black out, when a dark figure covered her sight and embraced her. She felt the pain disappear and then everything went pitch black.
A/N: A little of a beginning of something. I'm trying to make it tragic, so be warned. Thanks for reading. Reviews Welcome.
