Summer Blake: The Demon Slayer
Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler Fanfiction
Hidden Messages
The weird dreams started happening again. Summer was tossing and turning in her bed, trying to fight the battle of them in her mind. The first one started with Alois, who was crying and saying he needed help. The next one involved her being engulfed in flames and feeling her own skin burn off of her.
But the last one was the one that confused her most of all. It involved a couple standing before her. She couldn't see their faces, only their silhouettes. "It's okay." They said, calling out to her before she jolted up in bed.
Drenched in sweat, Summer was breathing heavily, trying to process the weird dreams she had just had. "W-What was all that about? A-are they warnings or messages?" She thought to herself. She knew Hannah wanted her to protect Alois from Claude, but what about the fire and the couple? Wait...Edward told her that Ciel's parents died in a fire in this mansion. Could it be about that?
Then what about the couple? Was that Ciel's parents or...
Summer shook her head, trailing off thought. What she needed most right now was some fresh air and something to eat. Getting out of bed, she decided to go explore the manor. Putting her hand on the door knob, she turned it to open the door and was surprised by the sight right outside her door.
It was Sebastian, standing outside her door and cupping Cian's mouth as he held the other demon captive. Sebastian smiled, "Hello, Miss Blake. It's too early for you to be out of bed."
The Slayer blinked, wondering just what the hell was going on, surprised to see Cian. "C-Cian, what are you doing here?"
The blonde demon's speech was muffled by Sebastian's hand. "I found him right outside your room. I suppose he is here to kill you, but I can't have that happening. You're one of my masters guests. I was just about to dispose of him, I'm sorry for the inconvenience Miss Blake."
Summer waved it off, going to rescue the demon from the butler's grasp. "It's okay, he's a friend of mine. No need to kill him off just yet."
"Hey!" Cian barked, causing Summer to shhh him.
"A Slayer and a demon friends?" Sebastian asked, curiously.
"Long story." Summer said, waving it off once again. "We should probably take our conversation downstairs so we don't wake the others."
Sitting on one of the couches and chairs in the drawing room, surrounded by candlelight, Summer and Cian spent their time catching up. It was only 3am in the morning, according to Sebastian. Summer found it a bit ironic and funny that this all seemed to happen at exactly that time, which was believed to be witching or devil hour to some people.
"You've been missing for 2 weeks now!" Cian told her, his blue eyes shining. "I noticed something was wrong after 2 days and told Jasper about it. Ever since then we've been searching for you frantically, until I started hearing rumors from the Underworld. That's what lead me here."
"I know." Summer said, pulling her phone out of her bath robe she was wearing. "I don't know how, but Jasper called me yesterday."
"What?" Cian looked with wide eyes.
She opened up her phone and was surprised to see it saying NO SERVICE once again. "That's odd..."
Once morning time hit, Summer and Cian were surprised. They didn't even notice the sun rising up and shining light throughout the manor. The two were busy catching each other up on everything the other had missed and just chatting with each other in general.
It wasn't until Ciel came downstairs did they realize. He stopped in his tracks at the bottom of the stairs, looking to them shocked. "Miss Blake?"
She quickly jolted up, as if to attention. "Hey C- Lord Phantomhive, what's up?"
"What are you doing still dressed in your nightgown and is this the surprised guest Sebastian told me about?"
Summer looked out the window and then down to her nightgown. "Oh crap, is it already that time? I didn't even know it was morning time!"
Cian looked over to Ciel and waved with a lack of manners. "The name's Cian."
Ciel looked to them with a deadpan look. "I can tell you're with her. It's very obvious." Not only from his lack of manners, but also the way he was dressed. He had never seen clothing like that.
Regaining herself, Summer punched the demon's arm. "Sorry about him, he's a demon with a bit of a hot head. I'll make sure he behaves though."
"I hope so. Sebastian already told me." Ciel said. "However, you should go get dressed Summer and take him with you. I can't have you both looking ridiculous in front of my company before they come downstairs."
Summer nodded. "Got it!" She grabbed Cian and practically dragged him with her. The demon just glared at Ciel until he was out of his sight.
"Where's Summer?" Edward asked.
"Right here." She replied, making her way down the staircase dressed in a new dress with Cian by her side, who was dressed in the appropriate clothing for this era. "Sorry it took me so long. I didn't sleep well last night."
Francis looked surprised. "And who's this new face in our presence?" She was eyeballing him over his hair.
"This is-" Summer paused, struggling of what to come up with. Cian whispered into her ear and pulled back, giving him a look. "This is Lord Cian Jones, a childhood friend of mine."
Edward frowned a little. Elizabeth noticed this, but looked to them with a smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you Lord Jones." She curtsied.
Summer had to elbow him slightly to get him to reply. "It is a pleasure to meet you as well-"
"Lady Elizabeth Midford." She replied. "That's my brother Lord Edward Midford, my father Marquess Alexis Leon Midford and my mother Marchioness Francis Midford."
"What brings you here Lord Jones?" Alexis asked, curious.
"Well, I was worried about Summer and heard word of her being here, so I came as quick as I could." That wasn't a lie. Cian put his hand on her shoulder, an unconscious habit, as she gave him a look telling him not to after seeing the way the others looked.
"Sheesh, Cian, I'm only doing a job for the Queen. I told you before I left." She winked at him, trying to tell him to keep up with the act.
He obviously wasn't getting it. "What? No you didn't. I had to find out from-" He was cut off by her jabbing her foot into his with her heel.
"You're so silly!" Summer laughed. "I told you the Queen wants me here to help with a task, top secret and all, right Lord Phantomhive?" She looked to Ciel, knowing he would help keep the act on.
Ciel nodded. "Of course, but we have some free time before then."
"Good." Francis said, smiling. "Then that means I can give you your first fencing lesson. We can't have one of the Queen's people have rusty skills in self-defense. It's uncalled for!"
Summer smiled warmly at her. "Very well, then. I'm all yours."
"Good. Edward!" Francis looked to her son, who stood up straight and wiped the frown from his face.
"Yes, mother?" He asked.
"Help Miss Blake and your sister into the carriage. We're going back home." She told him.
This caused Elizabeth to let out a sad sound. "Awww." She took Ciel into a hug. "Bye Ciel, till then."
"Summer, if I might have a word with you real quick." Ciel said, taking her off to the side. "Keep me informed on Claude's whereabouts."
Summer nodded. "On it. You do the same as well, okay."
Cian walked up to her, asking. "What am I supposed to do while you're gone?"
"Stay here with Sebastian and Ciel."
Cian looked behind him, seeing the other demon smirking at him and the human servants smiling. He sighed, annoyed. "Why do I have to do that?"
Summer gave him a smug smile. "Hey, you're the one who chose to take on the persona of an Earl instead of being a Butler. If you had been a butler, you could've come with me."
Cian let out an annoyed sigh, gritting his teeth. "Fine then." He really hated this era.
Edward helped Summer into the carriage after Elizabeth, but gave one last look to Cian who didn't notice. For some reason, he felt unsettled by this guy's sudden appearance.
If it was one thing that Summer could say about Marchoiness Midford, it was that she was the strictest teacher she had probably ever had in her whole life. Jasper was no where near the level of it like she was. She always thought he was a bit too easy on her and that she needed more of a challenge.
Oh, how she regretted her words now. She wanted Jasper back.
Summer took off her helmet, dropping it to the floor and breathing heavily. For some reason the rest of the Midford family decided to sit and watch the show.
Francis took off her helmet. "Your form is getting better and you seem to do better with the epee, but you need more work with the foil."
"It's okay Summer, you'll get it in no time." Edward said cheering her on.
"I actually do much better with the Sabre." She told them, shaking her hair loose from sweat.
Elizabeth looked up to her, confused. "What's a Sabre?"
Oh yeah, that was a new modern addition to fencing she guessed. "Uh, how about another round? I'm ready to learn more!"
Francis was silent for a minute before answering. "Okay then. Since you're better at the epee than you are at the foil, we will have you use that. And to make it more interesting...Edward will be your opponent this time."
Everyone looked to the Midford son with wide eyes which he equally shared. He nodded. "Yes mother." Edward walked over to the area to grab his gear and put on his protective equipment.
Summer and Edward walked up to each other, helmets off to the side of them. "Well, this should be interesting. If you kick my butt then that means Lady Francis is gonna have it in for me." Summer chuckled.
"I'm sorry." Edward said. "I know mother can be strict, but she means well."
"It's okay, she's just keeping me on my toes." Summer paused, giving him a smirk. "You ready?"
Edward nodded, smiling back at her. "Yeah."
They both put on their helmets and took out their epee, standing in their positions at the ready. Francis stood up, raising her hand before dropping it, indicating the start of the match.
Since it was a match using the epee, that meant the entire body was a valid target. The only important thing to remember was to block and be very good at it as well. Quickly, Summer ran forth towards Edward, taking the first attack. He quickly blocked it and then tried to push it off onto Summer who crouched down, avoiding his attack.
The Slayer was quick to scatter away and get back on her feet. She was use to it when fighting creatures of the supernatural world. The Midford's were surprised to see how she blocked his attacks, almost acting like an animal. The girl was quick on her feet, Francis could give her that.
Edward took the next attack, but it ended with Summer blocking his attack with her sword. The two swords were stuck together as both opponents were at a standstill. "Damn, Edward, I think you might actually win this." She said to him, still using her weapon to block his.
"Same could be said about you, Summer. You're very good at blocking attacks and I'm surprised you're able to do with a heavier weapon." He replied.
Someone had to give in eventually and it was Summer, who pulled back, and when she did Edward almost nearly got her. His epee was only 2 centimeter's away from her chest, but she did a surprise somersault over his head, dodging it. This caused Edward to fall forward and trip onto the ground, losing his footing.
Now was Summer's chance to regain it all back and take the moment. She charged towards him as he went to reach for his weapon, but looked to see her coming towards him. It took him by surprise as he held his hands up and Summer held him down to the ground with her foot, pointing the epee directly at his chest. "Gotcha!" She said.
The Midford's looked at the scene before them with wide eyes before cheering.
"It's just like how we first met and fell in love my dear!" Alexis exclaimed to his wife, crying happily over the beautiful scene.
Summer took off her helmet, shaking out her hair and smiling. Francis watched the scene, recalling the familiarity of it as a smile came to her face. "It would be ironic if Edward fell for her now." She didn't doubt it though, like father like son.
The Slayer got her foot off Edward and held a hand out for him. "Good job Edward! Sorry about that last move, though."
The Midford son took off his helmet and looked up to her with a red face. "I-It's okay. It helped me realize I shouldn't underestimate my opponent, even when it seems like all the odds are in my favor."
He accepted her hand as she helped him up. Elizabeth came over to talk with them. "That was amazing, Summer! Are you okay, brother?" She could guess what was going through his head right now.
"Y-Yeah, I'm okay Lizzie. I think I've just seen the light though, I need a minute." Edward replied, flustered as he walked out of the room to get some fresh air and regain his thoughts. His heart was racing.
Elizabeth giggled. "What's with him?" Summer asked, looking confused.
"You stabbed him in the chest with the epee."
"Oh god, did I hurt him? How could I if he was wearing his protective gear?"
Elizabeth giggled again. "You still got to him regardless of him wearing his protective gear or not."
Edward stood outside in the gardens of the estate. He had finally regained his breath once again and let the cool fresh air calm him down.
The scene of what happened was replaying in his head over and over again. And it happened exactly in the way his father and mother met. Was this a message to him?
Summer's smiling face and the hand she held out for him made the blush creep back onto his face. Despite not knowing much about her, Edward knew he liked her. He wanted to know more about her. She was a mysterious girl who seemed to literally slam her way into his life, knocking him down and taking him by surprise.
Edward knew it was crazy, but it seemed to intrigue him. She brought an excitement to his life and he didn't want this feeling leaving anytime soon.
He didn't want Summer leaving.
Author's note: How Cian and Summer became friends will be explained in later chapters, but for now, I leave you with the happenings in this chapter. Cian becomes competition for Edward who has now developed a for sure crush on Summer.
But the happenings in the next chapter might change how long Summer can stay...
