Glimmer-The Monster in the Mirror
No one ever expected Glimmer to leave behind what she did. Glimmer had been the beautiful one, the desirable one, the girl with all the sponsors in the 74th Hunger Games. On television, during her interview they acted like that was all she was, just a pretty face. She thought they were out of their minds. Had they seen here lately? Could they not see the dark circles under her eyes, the teeth that were too big for her mouth and made her look like a horse? Did they not see that her nose looked more like a beak and how limp and lifeless her hair was? She had even started to get pimples sometimes! She was, in her eyes, disgusting to look at. She looked at her body and saw flabby arms, chunky legs, large hips and a fat stomach. When really she was slender and made of solid muscle. Her whole life when people told her she was pretty she had said "Thank you," but she knew they were just being polite, just trying to make her feel better about herself.
When she was told by her Hunger Games stylist that they were going to go with a "beautiful and sexy" angle for her interview she wanted to die, what was wrong with these people? How in the world was she supposed to pull that off? She was as ugly as they came, couldn't they see that? When she saw herself in the mirror in her interview dress she was humiliated. The dress was almost see-through and the whole country would be able to see her disgusting body! She did what her mentors told her and played the part of the pretty girl with Cesar but she was so embarrassed. Everyone must be laughing at her. What a joke to try and make someone so ugly play the part of a beautiful girl on national television!
When death finally came for her in the games and she lay on the ground swollen to grotesque proportions because of the tracker jacker stings one of her last thoughts was "At least now everyone will have to admit how ugly I am, right now no one can deny that I look like a monster." But it wasn't everyone else who had a problem; it was Glimmer who had a problem. Everyone else saw her for what she was; a beautiful, healthy, strong young woman. Glimmer was the only person who saw herself as hideous. When Glimmer's parents went through her things after she died they found photo album after photo album with pictures of Glimmer with family and friends; and in every single photo Glimmer had scratched out her face. Her family was confused, how could their beautiful shining girl hate herself so much?
