After dinner that night, everyone decided to go to sleep for the night due to fact they were all tired from the journey and the unpacking of the gear. It wasn't long until the safe house was full of snores and silent breathing of the gang peacefully asleep . . . all except one. Bentley was lying awake in his bed tossing and turning not being able to shut his eyes. Sly was completely on Bentley's mind. He wanted to know where his best friend and brother had gone and why.
Bentley groaned out loud softly and sat up straight in his bed and looking out his window. The turtle couldn't stop thinking about his best friend.
"I need some air." Bentley said to himself. The turtle shifted himself over to his wheelchair and placed himself inside the chair. He put on his jacket figuring it would be slightly cold outside due to the fact it was nearing September and the weather would be cold. Careful not to awake anyone on the way out of his bedroom, he shut the door, wheeled quietly down the hallway, and made it to the outside.
Bentley went onto the roof of the safe house so he could get a better view of the area. For the past hour, Bentley just stared at the city lights and the starry night sky of Paris hoping that they carry the answer of Sly's disappearance. Bentley felt a feeling of defeat inside of him.
"I can solve any math problem and do it right. I can hack any security system. I can come up with the most cunning of plans. I can do all those things . . . yet, I can't even figure out where my best friend has gone. Some genius I am," Bentley said to himself.
"You still are a genius and the best Sly could ever have," A voice replied behind him.
Bentley turned around to find that it was Penelope. He noticed that she was in her pajamas instead of her usual attire. Her pajamas were of a lavender color and silk. She didn't have her bandana on, so her hair was hanging out loosely. Bentley was taken aback by Penelope's appearance and blushed slightly hoping she wouldn't notice. The moonlight made her look more beautiful in his eyes; especially with her hair being loose and the moon shining down on it. For a second, it made him forget about Sly but the feelings returned.
"Penelope, what are you doing up here? It's late, shouldn't you be asleep?" Bentley inquired.
"I was grabbing myself some water in the kitchen, but I noticed you going out the door outside. I waited inside waiting for you to some back inside but you were up here for a while. So, I decided to some up and see what was up." Penelope stated as she walked up towards Bentley.
"And in response to your second question, shouldn't I be asking you the same thing?" Penelope asked looking at Bentley in the eye.
"I just came up here to get some fresh air that's all." Bentley replied turning towards the city to avoid her gaze. Bentley soon felt one of her hands on his right shoulder.
"I know you're thinking about Sly. Don't worry he'll come back to us." Penelope replied.
"When, Penelope? " Bentley replied meeting her gaze. It's just like you asked at dinner of when Sly will come back. I don't know, none of us know. Mainly I just can't figure out why Sly would just up and leave like that. It's not like Sly just to vanish without giving notice to us."
"I'm sure Sly has his reasons for leaving us, we just have to let him do his thing and then he'll come back." Penelope replied assuringly.
"That's just it Penelope, I don't understand Sly's reasons for leaving. What reason does he have to leave after the Cooper Vault job was such a success? Here I'm the genius of the gang and I'm supposed to know all the facts. I should be smart enough to know here Sly is, but I have no idea! No idea! What kind of genius am I if I can't figure out where one of my teammates is, mainly my best friend!? What am I!?" Bentley stated looking away from Penelope.
"Bentley, you're the smartest person that I know." Penelope stated walking in front of Bentley and kneeling before him placing both of her hands of his shoulders.
"Just because you don't know where Sly is doesn't mean that you're a failure. You should know that Sly can take care of himself, he has a bright mind."
That's not the point Penelope," Bentley stated looking Penelope in the eyes again then looking down at the ground shaking his head.
"Sly is not just my best friend . . . he's my brother." Bentley stated still looking at the ground.
Penelope had a puzzled look on her face not understanding Bentley's meaning. Bentley shifted away from Penelope and looked out into the city again. Soon the genius took a deep breath and went into further explanation.
