At the end of the previous chapter, Sherlock and Molly had embarked on a second date...

Molly Hooper's Date

Chapter seven

At first, they sit sipping in silence at Speedy's,

No sound

Apart from the clatter of cups filled with coffee;

Fresh-ground.

A moment's peace found.

~0~

Molly regards her companion and hides a small smile,

Aware that what causes frustration can also beguile.

She is calm and clearheaded;

Expectations have steadied.

~0~

Sherlock regards every customer as they come in;

Deducing the secrets they carry; good deeds or past sin.

Molly's encouraging words let the stories begin.

~0~

Molly relaxes as snapshot scenarios flow;

Of spousal abandonment, crimes and the debts which they owe.

The art of the greatest consulting detective on show.

~0~

The tale of a cheating car salesman;

A mother, bereft;

A plumber regretting

The loss of the girl he has left;

Each description is deft.

~0~

An absorbing few minutes

Then Molly joins in with the same

Precise observations of habit, and motive, and aim.

They both play the great game.

~0~

A youth rushes past with a vaguely familiar air

And Sherlock is up in an instant and topples his chair.

What next?

A swift text.

~0~

Molly is witness as Sherlock takes off down the street;

A note left in haste on the table, her date is complete.

Short but sweet.

~0~

A blur flashes past from two hundred and twenty one B;

John Watson obeying the call, instantaneously.

Molly can tell

That all will be well.

~0~

She orders a fresh cup of coffee, and gets out a book;

She'd brought it in case her original plans came unstuck.

Not just luck.

~0~

The note dropped in haste;

Left to cover the bill?

Perhaps?

Wait...

"The theatre.

St Martins.

The Mousetrap.

Next Monday.

At eight."

A third date!
