-4 months later-
Serena's Point of View
"Hey, Blair." I say into the phone as I try to balance the shopping bags on my arm.
"Hello Seren-" Blair says, but is cut off by the horn of a taxi. "Good grief, Serena, where are you?"
"I'm just shopping on fifth. What have I done to deserve a phone call from the great Blair Waldorf-Bass?" I ask, jokingly.
"Well that's convenient, I'm on my way to Bendel's. Meet you there?"
"Sure! Why did you call though?"
"I'll let you know in person. See you in a few!" And with that, the line cuts.
I sigh and cross the street to get to Henri Bendel.
"Serena! Ugh, I feel like I haven't seen you in forever." Blair says as she wraps her arms around me.
"Blair, we just saw each other 2 weeks ago." I laugh.
"That's basically the same thing." She grabs onto my arm and begins to walk through the door.
"So what was it that you wanted to tell me?"
"Well, its Henry's birthday on Saturday, so Chuck and I thought that we'd take him to the Hamptons. It's his favourite place and we want all of the important people in his life there to celebrate his 5th birthday with him. I hope that you and Dan will join us." Blair explains as she makes a beeline for the handbags.
"While I would be delighted to be in attendance, Dan won't be home in time to, I'm afraid."
"So go without him. Where is he anyway?" Blair asks, while observing the Debutante Clutch display. "Palm or plated?"
"Fine, but only because the weekend would be lonely, otherwise. Plus, I love Henry too much. And palm, the plated clutch is too popular, you should stand out, after all, you are Blair Waldorf-Bass." I say handing her the asymmetrical envelope clutch the the palm leaf design. "Dan's in Seattle. He's starting another novel, I think."
"S, I think you'd look better with the Palm Clutch. Why don't you get it? And besides, Dan has been gone for almost every month for 2 weeks at a time. How long does it take to tour a city like Seattle? And why aren't you with him?" She says passing the clutch back to me.
"Well, I got bored so I came home." I say looking at the colour selection for the clutch.
"Serena," Blair sighs, which makes me worry, "just get all of them. One for every occasion." She orders while picking up the burgundy Debutante Plated Clutch. "This one should match my dress perfectly."
"While they're all gorgeous, I can't buy all of the colours; Dan would kill me." As Blair gives me her signature glare, I say, "So I'll just buy the brown and the white one." Her eyebrows resettle and she gives me a smile.
"We'll take these 3 clutches, please and thank you." Blair orders the sales assistant. We make our way to the counter and wait for the clutches to be retrieved.
"So who will be coming to the Hamptons?" I ask, nervously.
"Aside from mine and Chuck's families, just you and Nate. The godparents must be present, of course." I cringe at the sound of Nate's name,
"Serena, what's wrong?" Blair keeps her eyes locked on me, as we pull out our credit cards to pay.
I sigh, which only further aggravates Blair.
"Serena, you will tell me at this very instant!" She shrieks, shocking the sale associates.
I put my wallet back in my bag and sigh before the beginning of my explanation. "Nate and I haven't spoken since I got back from my honeymoon." I say, then look away, searching for anything to catch my attention."
"S, your wedding was over 4 months ago! What happened?" she demands, as we leave the store.
"I don't know, we got into a fight or something like that and then he walked away. Right here, actually." I sigh, stopping in the middle of the sidewalk. "I ran into him, while shopping."
"It must've been a bad fight then. I'm sorry, S. I know how much Nate means to you."
"It doesn't matter Blair, we're just friends. We didn't talk for almost a year and look at where we are now." I resume walking.
"Yes, but it took weeks upon weeks, and we were ready to rip each other to shreds! I don't care what you said to him, but you need to mend things with Nate. I will not have godparent tensions ruin his birthday weekend. You two mean way too much to Henry, and he knows when something is wrong. He is a Waldorf-Bass, after all."
"Blair… you realize that you're giving me 4 days to mend something that has been damaged for 4 months, right?"
"Yes, I do believe I can count, but thank you for the concern." Blair grins. When I don't reply, she stops and turns to me. "Do it for Henry, Serena." She says, sternly. Her glare burns through me, and I can't do anything but nod.
"Okay, but only for Henry." I surrender to Blair, once again.
"Nate?" I call out nervously as I step into his penthouse.
"Serena?" Nate responds as he steps around the corner. I smile nervously when I see him. "What are you doing here?" He sighs and looks away.
"Can we talk?" I ask, hopefully.
Without another word he turns and heads to the living room where he takes a seat on the leather armchair.
"Okay then." I say as I follow him and sit across from him on the sectional. I look at him only to find him looking down. "I assume you're coming to the Hamptons this weekend?"
When the silence drags out, eventually I get impatient. "Seriously Nate? You can't even reply? I'm asking a simple question."
With that, he finally looks up and sits back. "Fine. Yes, I am going to the Hamptons. I'm Henry's godfather, after all. What about it?"
"Well, I think we should make up before then. It's for the best."
"For who, me or you?"
"For everyone. And especially our godson."
"You make it sound like we're bound together by him." He sighs and looks away.
"Nate, we are. We are basically his second set of parents and this is a big weekend for him. We need to be on our best behaviour for him. He's a Waldorf-Bass! He senses all tension between those that he cares about and Henry does not need to worry about us. Nate, please be sensible about this."
After a long pause of silence, Nate finally replies. "No I'm sorry, you're right. Henry shouldn't worry about our issues."
"And Nate, I'm sorry about the way I acted before. I was just upset over some things; I shouldn't have taken it out on you." I look at him, hoping that his eyes will meet mine.
"What were you upset about?" He says, not forgiving me, just quite yet.
"It doesn't matter now."
"That's the thing, Serena. It does matter. How can you expect me to forgive you when you can't tell me why you flipped on me in the first place?" His temper is slowly rising.
"Nate, you know I would tell you everything but I just need to figure things out for myself right now." I stand up when he does, trying to reason with him.
Nate's Point of View
"Serena, I have some work to do. I need you to leave." I say, sternly.
"Nate, you can't just throw me out. And Henry's birthday- " Serena's flailing for excuses to stay, but I just get up and walk back towards my office.
I take slow steps, trying to consider Serena's apology, but I realize that no matter what happens, she's married to Dan. And being as close to her as we were before is never going to happen; not anymore.
"You know the way out." I say over my shoulder.
