Chapter 7: The Youkai Within…
Inuyasha was still walking home, wondering where the hell that voice in his head came from. 'I got a bad feeling about this…' he thought as he made it home. He opened the door and dropped his things by the door.
"Mom! Dad! I'm home!" the hanyou yelled as he walked into the living room.
He didn't hear a response. 'They must've went out' he thought as he walked into the kitchen. He grabbed a soda from the refrigerator and walked upstairs to his room. He saw Sesshomaru while he was walking to his room. He wanted answers about the voice in his head and where it came from, so he reluctantly walked up to his older brother.
"What do you want little brother?" asked Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru is a little taller than Inuyasha. He has the same long silver hair as well as the amber eyes, but Sesshomaru's eyes showed no compassion. His face also had no emotion and he had a cold aura about him. He was a very handsome man, but his expressionless face would intimidate any girl that wanted to talk to him. He was also full demon as opposed to Inuyasha who is a hanyou.
"I wanna ask you a question Fluffy," said Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed when Inuyasha called him Fluffy.
"I told you not to call me that, Puppy," retorted Sesshomaru.
Inuyasha turned red; he hated when Sesshomaru called him that.
"Damn it Sesshomaru, I thought I told you not to call me that!" snapped Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru looked at his younger brother and had a very small smirk on his face, amused from the reaction he got from the hanyou. "If you stop calling me Fluffy, I'll stop calling you Puppy," he said with a cold tone.
Inuyasha looked at his older brother with hate in his eyes. 'Damn, I can't stand this bastard' thought Inuyasha. He hated talking to Sesshomaru, let alone being around him.
"Anyway, Sesshomaru," began Inuyasha. "Do you ever hear dark voices in your head?"
Sesshomaru looked at his brother, but showed no expression. Inuyasha looked at his brother, hoping he knew the answer.
"That's something you should talk to Father about," Sesshomaru finally said. He then walked away regally with his silver hair lightly boucing with each step he took.
Inuyasha looked at his brother walk away. He was so frustrated that he even wasted his time talking to Sesshomaru.
"Damn it, he's not good for anything!!" he said to himself.
The hanyou then walked into his room and lied down on his bed. He turned on his music and dozed off. After an hour long nap, he heard someone downstairs; it was his parents. He quickly got up from his bed and ran downstairs. He went into the living room and saw his parents there. His mom was human; she had medium length black hair, brown eyes, and a round face. She was short and had a full figure. His dad was a full demon; he was taller than both Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, had long silver hair like his sons and the same amber eyes. If the three of them stood next to each other, you could tell they were related by their handsome features.
"Hi Mother, hi Father," Inuyasha greeted. "I need to talk to you about something."
They could see that something was troubling their son. "What's the matter honey?" asked Izayoi, his mom.
"Well, today I was walking my friend Kagome home… do you remember her?"
"Oh yes, she was the one you used to talk about all the time when you were younger," said his father InuTaisho. The high school was named after him because of the contributions he made to Tokyo.
"Yeah, her. Anyway, we were saying goodbye and hugged each other. When I began to walk away, I heard a dark voice inside of my head. Am I going crazy or something?" asked Inuyasha with a confused look on his face.
Izayoi and InuTaisho looked at each other. The expression on their faces told Inuyasha they knew the answer to his question.
"How often have you been hearing this voice?" asked InuTaisho.
"Well, it's been off and on for a while, but I thought I was just imagining things," replied Inuyasha.
"Oh… I was wondering when this time would come," said his father.
"What time? What are you talking about?" asked Inuyasha more confused than he was before.
"Well, when a hanyou comes of age, their youkai blood begins to awaken," explained his father. "Since your 18th birthday is coming, your demon blood is awakening inside of you."
Inuyasha couldn't believe his ears. He didn't think that his demon half would have a mind of its own. His brows furrowed, feeling a mixture of confusion and disbelief.
"Is it often for the youkai part to speak to you in your mind?" asked Inuyasha.
"Once it awakens, it will. But for full demons, it does this from the day they're born," said InuTaisho.
"So I'm gonna hear this voice in my head for the rest of my life?" asked Inuyasha. He hoped he didn't.
"Yes son. It's a part of you that you can't escape. And you must be careful because it can take over you if you make yourself vulnerable," warned InuTaisho.
That wasn't the answer Inuyasha didn't want to hear. He had a depressed look on his face. His parents looked at them with sympathy, especially InuTaisho. He knew exactly what Inuyasha was about to go through.
"As long as you can maintain your self-control, you'll be fine," said InuTaisho, trying to reassure his son.
"Okay. But I have one more question. When the voice talked to me today, it said 'MINE'. Why did it say that?" he asked as he thought about the voice.
"Did it say that around Kagome?" asked Izayoi.
"Yeah…" said Inuyasha. His parents looked at each other and smiled. This made him more confused than before.
"Why are you two smiling?" he asked looking a little frustrated.
InuTaisho and Izayoi then looked at their son, their smile a little wider than before.
"It means that you've found your mate," said InuTaisho. He felt proud of his son.
"MY WHAT?!" yelled Inuyasha. This was clearly not what he wanted to hear from his parents.
"Your mate," said Izayoi. "She's the one you're destined to be with for the rest of your life."
"Your mom is correct," said InuTaisho. "Mates are forever. You've felt this way about Kagome for a while, but have denied it whenever you thought about it. Your youkai amplifies that feeling, and is trying to tell you she's the one for you."
Inuyasha didn't know what to say. Kagome, his mate? No way! They were just friends and nothing more. Sure he had thoughts about her as more than a friend from time to time, but shrugged them off as his raging teen hormones.
"You're kidding… right?" he asked hoping his parents were just trying to scare him as a joke.
"No we're not," said InuTaisho. "I went through the same thing when I met your mom."
"What about you and Sesshomaru's mom?" asked Inuyasha who was more confused than before.
"His mother and I were matched without our consent," explained InuTaisho. "We knew we didn't truly want one another, so we separated. When you meet the one you're destined to be with, your youkai will let you know."
Inuyasha was still shocked. This was so much for him to take in. He was desperately hoping he was going crazy. He couldn't believe his ears at all. He twitched them to and fro trying to make sure he was comprehending what his parents were saying.
"Please tell me I'm dreaming… somebody wake me up!!" he screamed, refusing to believe what he was just told.
His parents looked at him like he was a lunatic. They knew it would be a lot for him to take in, but they didn't expect this reaction from their son.
"Look Inuyasha, I know this is a lot to take in right now, but you're going to be 18 in 2 weeks, so you have to know what to expect," said InuTaisho.
"Oh and one more thing Inuyasha, since you and Kagome are destined to be mates, you must mark her to make sure no other demon tries to claim her," said InuTaisho.
Inuyasha's parents had "the talk" with him before, but he felt that they should've included this too. That way, he wouldn't be so freaked out now.
"Will you stop this already?! Kagome and I aren't gonna be mates," said Inuyasha. "We're just best friends and nothing more."
With that, Inuyasha went to his room, frustrated with what he just learned. He sat on his bed, mulling over the information he just received and was still in denial.
"There's no way Kagome and I are gonna be mates," he said to himself.
"Stop living in denial Inuyasha… Kagome will be ours…," said the dark voice in his head. Inuyasha then realized it was his youkai half speaking.
"No… we're nothing more than friends," Inuyasha said with frustration.
"Take it easy Inuyasha… soon you will realize how much the wench means to you and she will be ours," said his youkai.
"She's not a wench!! Stop talking like that about Kagome!!" he yelled.
His youkai began to laugh. "You will open your eyes to the truth soon… if not I will open them for you," his youkai said with a threatening tone.
"Shut up!! Just leave me the hell alone!!" exclaimed Inuyasha with rage. He couldn't believe how arrogant his youkai half was.
The youkai once again began to laugh. Then the laugh slowly faded until he couldn't hear the youkai anymore. He wished his demon blood wasn't awakening because he knew he was going to be in a whole lot of trouble when it did.
InuTaisho and Izayoi were still downstairs and they heard their son yelling. They knew he was fighting his youkai, and they looked at each other with worried faces.
"Do you think he'll be able to control it?" asked Izayoi.
"He's our son… of course he will. He is a strong young man," said InuTaisho with a reassuring voice. They kissed, and Izayoi went to the kitchen to make dinner.
The next day…
Inuyasha walked to school very slowly. He dreaded going to school now because of his youkai and how it might react around Kagome. 'Kami, please give me strength…' Inuyasha thought. He made it to the school, and saw Miroku by the front doors waiting for him. He saw the depressed look on Inuyasha's face.
"What's wrong Inuyasha?" asked Miroku.
"Well my birthday's in 2 weeks and…" began Inuyasha.
"You shouldn't be depressed about your birthday… it's a time of celebration," said Miroku.
"Of course it would be for a human, but not for me…" said Inuyasha while his ears drooped a little.
"What's so strange about a hanyou's birthday?" asked Miroku curiously.
Inuyasha then explained how his youkai blood was beginning to awaken, and how it would be fully when his birthday came. He then told Miroku about his youkai's voice and what it said to him. Miroku looked at him with surprise on his face.
"So you and Kagome are destined to be mates??" asked Miroku with disbelief.
"From what my parents told me… yeah," he said with a depressed tone.
Miroku still had a look of shock on his face. He couldn't believe what Inuyasha just told him.
"Well, I still don't believe what my parents said… Kagome and I aren't destined to be mates. We're just friends and that's all there is to it," said Inuyasha.
"But you want there to be more to it though," said Miroku.
Inuyasha then turned red; he couldn't believe what his friend told him.
"N-no I don't," he stammered out.
"You don't have to lie Inuyasha," said Miroku with a comforting tone. "Lots of guys like Kagome and want to be more than friends with her too."
After hearing this, his youkai blood boiled and a low grow emanated from Inuyasha's chest. Miroku looked at him curiously; Inuyasha was furious his demon half was making him react like that.
"What was the growl for?" asked Miroku.
"It wasn't me! My damn youkai got upset when you said that," explained Inuyasha.
"I don't think it's only your demon half that feels that way," said Miroku with a smirk. "But, if you say that the two of you are just friends, just block your demon half out of your mind. That way, you won't be bothered by it."
Inuyasha blushed again, but he knew there was no way that him and Kagome would be together. They then walked in the school, and made their way to History class. They saw Kagome and Sango already sitting as their desks chatting and giggling.
When Inuyasha laid eyes on Kagome, his blood began to boil, and his youkai was trying to come out. Inuyasha fought desperately against it, blocking it out of his mind. Kagome saw him and walked up to him.
"Hey Inuyasha, what's up?" she greeted as she hugged him.
"Oh, hey Kagome. How are you?" he asked. He could feel his demon blood boiling furiously at her soft touch as well as her scent of vanilla and honey, but fought to control it.
Mr. Myouga then walked in, and everyone began taking their seats. Inuyasha thought it was best to sit somewhere far from Kagome, so he wouldn't have to keep fighting with his youkai. Kagome saw that he wasn't sitting next to her, and she felt a little sad. She thought that he was her best friend. 'Maybe something's wrong' she thought. She made up her mind to talk to him later about it.
Lunchtime came, and Kagome decided to go to Inuyasha's table to ask him to talk. Inuyasha was at his table eating lunch, oblivious to the fact that Kagome was heading his way. She made it to his table and Miroku saw her.
"Hey Kagome. What brings you to our table?" asked Miroku.
Inuyasha then looked up and saw Kagome standing before him. He almost fell out of his chair because he was trying to stay away from her, but his plan seemed to be failing now.
"Inuyasha, can we talk?" asked Kagome with a concerned voice.
Inuyasha looked at Kagome; he saw the concern and worry in her eyes. He couldn't say no.
"Uh, sure." He and Kagome then walked out of the cafeteria and into the hall. Kikyo saw them walking out of the cafeteria together and she was furious. 'That bitch is gonna pay for trying to take my Inuyasha' she thought evilly.
"What's wrong Inuyasha? How come you haven't sat with me in classes?" asked Kagome.
"It's hard to explain Kagome," said Inuyasha. He felt so bad for making her feel as if she was unwanted.
"Inuyasha, you're my best friend. Best friends should be able to talk about anything."
At this, he froze. He knew she was right, and he felt that he owed her an explanation. After all, he didn't want to risk losing her friendship again.
"Well, it's about my birthday in 2 weeks…" he began.
"Oh yeah, you'll be 18! How cool is that?" she asked happily. She then saw Inuyasha was still looking miserable. "What's so bad about it?" she asked curiously.
He then told her about the voice he heard in his head and the explanation his parents gave him for it, except he didn't mention the part about them being destined to be mates. She looked at him with an understanding expression on her face.
"Who would've thought being a hanyou would be so rough?" she asked sarcastically trying to make him smile. He grinned a little.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you in the first place Kagome," said Inuyasha. He was glad she wasn't freaking out or anything.
"Thanks for telling me Inuyasha," said Kagome with a look of relief on her face. They then hugged again.
Suddenly, his youkai began to start raging out of control. Inuyasha's blood was boiling furiously and he was beginning to panic. He knew he was slowly losing control. He then let go of Kagome and ran back into the cafeteria. Kagome had a confused look on her face as she saw him run.
"I wonder what that was about," she said to herself. She shrugged it off and went back into the cafeteria to join her friends.
When she made it back to her table, Ayame, Sango, and Rin looked at her with questioning expressions. She quickly caught this and began explaining herself.
"Look nothing happened okay? I just wanted to make sure he was okay because he's been looking depressed lately," she said.
The girls looked at her, and said nothing else about it. Inuyasha was on the other side of the cafeteria with Miroku. He was still trying to settle his youkai from taking over. 'Damn, this is gonna be tough to deal with… I don't wanna keep avoiding Kagome because she's my friend' thought Inuyasha. He wished that his youkai half never awoken because he felt it was jeopardizing his friendship with Kagome.
