Danger Afoot

August 3rd 1963 Dumbledore cottage Godric's Hollow

"Dada" shouted Hermione as she ran towards Albus as he stepped into their rooms through the portrait that connected his office to their home.

"Hello darling" smiled Albus for the first time all day "and how is my little witch?" questioned Albus as he scooped her into his arms.

"I'm ok da" Hermione answered as she gave him a wet sloppy kiss on his cheek before snuggling into his neck.

Albus held her tight and walked towards Minerva who had just appeared in the living room door way with a worried look on her face "and how was your day" Albus asked with an equally worried look on his face Minerva's answer was her looking down to where a three year old Remus Lupin could be seen standing beside her a half-eaten cookie in his hand"

"Hi Uncwl Albws" Remus smiled and waved as he munched on his cookie.

"Remus came of over to pwey dada and we made cookieees with mama" Hermione inputted excitedly as she pulled her head from her dad's neck.

"Well hello Remus, sounds like you had a fun day" Albus smiled. "Why don't you and Hermione go and play while I help you Auntie Minnie make dinner" Abus suggested as he put Hermione down and shooed them back to their toys which he could see was scattered throughout the living room, after he was sure they were ok he followed Minerva into the kitchen.

Minerva was back at the counter chopping vegetables for dinner when Albus entered and he went and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and rested his head upon her shoulder.

"You ok? What happened today?" Minerva questioned Albus as she put the knife down and turned to face him.

"Well nothing really I managed to speak to John and tried to tell him to be careful and not to overlook the threat but John was adamant that they would be fine and that there was nothing to worry about" Albus said with a shake of his head "We've all talked to him now and John isn't stupid he knows to be careful, my worry is he's putting too much faith in his family wards and the Ministry but when I mentioned it, he said he wasn't and then he was informed that they had apprehended the main werewolf and had him in custody" stated Albus.

"Well that's good isn't it if he's in custody surely their safe?" questioned Minerva feeling lighter than she had in days with that bit of news.

It had been an awful couple of weeks John had been offered a promotion at the Ministry and had accepted he was now just below the head of the 'department for the regulation and control of magical creatures' and his opinions had gotten away from him when he was questioned regarding his plans for some of the creatures in their community one of which was werewolves, since then John had been receiving many threats sent not only to the ministry but his home as well. They had all rallied and tried to help where possible but ultimately there was little they could do but it was a good feeling to think it may be over.

"I hope so Minerva I really do and as long as he's put away I think it will be fine" Albus stated with a smile.

"Thank Merlin then" Minerva smiled as she went back to preparing dinner.

"So how long has Remus been here and where is our other nephew" Albus queried.

"Hope dropped him off this morning she didn't say much but she was clearly worried and nervous she mentioned that they had a particularly nasty threat through this morning that actually threatened Remus she asked if he could stay a couple a day's till hopefully things changed, of course I agreed but perhaps now with the developments she will pick him up tonight after all" Minerva explained with frown.

"I hope not though Hermione will be devastated she's so looking forward to him staying" added Minerva with a laugh.

Albus couldn't believe they would threaten a three year old, it made the news that the werewolf had been caught all the better "and James" he asked his wife again.

"Oh he had a light fever nothing to worry about, but we thought it best he stay home as Dorea said Remus getting sick at the moment is the last thing Hope and John need" Minerva answered with a flourish as she dropped the chopped vegetables in the pan and started to prepare the chicken.

"Ah I see well as long as he's ok it feels odd not seeing him here with them though" Albus laughed as he stood in the doorway watching Hermione and Remus working together to build a tower, James would usually knock it down at this point he thought with a smile. "And what are we having for dinner darling" Albus asked as he turned back to Minerva.

"Nothing fancy just chicken casserole" Minerva turned to him with a smile knowing it was his favourite meal that she cooked as well as their daughters favourite. "And all there's left to do is leave it to simmer" she added just as they heard the combined shout of "Mummy, Auntie Hope" from the kids in the living room.

Albus turned to see a clearly tiered and stressed Hope embracing Remus and smiling at Hermione who was still sat in front of the still standing tower of blocks. Minerva came to his side and they watched as she kissed Remus looked at their tower that he showed her with pride before she left them to play and headed towards him and Minerva.

Minerva embraced her as she got nearer and led her into the kitchen "Albus be a dear and put the kettle on will you" Minerva asked him as she guided Hope to take a seat at the kitchen table and where Minerva sat next to her grasping her hand waiting for her to speak she seemed quite shocked.

Albus made three cups of tea just as they liked it and set them down in front of each of the women before leaving them to talk by going to play with the kids.

"Hope dear what's wrong?" questioned Minerva, as she had enough of waiting for her friend to talk.

Hope raised her gaze from her lap to look at Minerva "do you think it's over?" she whispered with tears in her eyes.

Minerva quickly leaned forward and grabbed her friend's hands "oh Hope, I think you should still be carful but that things are improving" Minerva comforted with a sombre smile "why don't you still leave Remus here with us tonight he is after all so excited to stay and so is Hermione and you and John can get things settled, what do you say?" suggested Minerva.

Hope looked at her friends and glanced to the living room where she could hear her precious boy laughing and looked back at Minerva with a relieved smile on her face "I think you are right Minerva it will do us all some good, and who am I to dash our two children's dreams" she added as she took a sip of tea.

It was not long after that Hope left with smiles for Albus and Minerva and kisses for the children as she made Remus promise to be good and that she would be around the next day to pick him up as she wanted him home.

Later that night:

"Come on then Munchkins, time for bed" proclaimed Albus as he herded the children upstairs. Minerva just looked on with a smile as Albus chased them pretending to be a Monster and their giggles trailed behind them as they run away, she began to tidy away the toys before she would follow for good night kisses and bedtime stories.

They had a lovely night she thought as she picked up the blocks, after dinner her and Albus had just sat and watched as Hermione and Remus played with each other, with them getting involved on occasion, both of them feeling so much more relaxed knowing all the troubles were likely over. They were so happy together just playing it made her even more glad she had convinced Hope to leave him here for the night, they would have to arrange many more sleepovers with James as well she thought as she placed the last block in the box and headed for the stairs.

As she entered Hermione's room she was not shocked to see both children in the same bed tiered but eager smiles on their facing waiting for their story no doubt as Albus tucked them in.

"Mama can we have the tail of the three brothers tonight please It's Remus; favourite" Hermione asked with a smile towards her mother as she snuggled deeper into the covers.

"Of course you can my darlings, I'll just get the book" Minerva answered as she went to bookcase.

"Good night daddy" Hermione muttered as Albus kissed her and she kissed his cheek.

"Good night Uncwl Albws" Remus said as he also received a kiss to the forehead.

"Good night my little witch and wizard I shall see you in the morning" sweet dreams he told them as he came over and kissed Minerva before leaving and heading to bed himself.

"Right you two are you ready?" Minerva asked as she sat on the side of the bed. Both children nodded so she started to read. She was on the fourth page when she felt certain they were both asleep so she kissed them and pulled up the quilt and headed to join her husband in bed herself.
