It's the 27th of September. I'm waiting -RB
Quinn sighed as she got Rachel Berry's text. She didn't even know how the girl got her number, but right now she had bigger things to worry about. She was about to tell her parents about her pregnancy and that was stressing enough. She didn't need Rachel to pressure her anymore.
I'm working on it –Q
She sent the text to Berry and muted her ringtone. She didn't need to be interrupted while doing this.
Her mother was already sitting at the dining table and her father walked into the room at the same time Quinn did. Quinn's hands were already trembling so she put them on her lap as she sat down. She was happy Frannie was going out with a friend, because she didn't need her perfect sister to judge her too. Still, the fact that her parents were both looking at her now made her even more nervous.
"How was your day at school?" Her father asked.
"Great." Quinn said without meeting his eyes.
"Was that sarcastic?" Her father chuckled as dinner was served. After their maid Laurel left, they prayed as usual but Quinn felt like a fraud. She had done horribly wrong and she hadn't even told her parents. How could she pray to Jesus like this? He probably hated her.
"Bon appetite." Russell Fabray said before the three of them started eating. Well, actually it was more the two of them because Quinn didn't really have an appetite. She moved her food around on her plate and pricked some of it on her fork but she didn't eat any of it.
It took her parents a few minutes to notice she wasn't eating. "Are you okay, Quinny?"
Her mother gave her a worried look, but Quinn couldn't meet her mother's eyes. She was gathering all her courage to answer the question. If she looked her mother in the eyes now, she would back out and hide the truth from her parents once again.
"Quinn?" Her father had put his knife and fork down to and reached across the table for her hand, but Quinn pulled back, still gathering her courage.
"Quinn, are you feeling sick? Why are you not eating?"
"I…" Quinn started. Her voice trembled and she almost did back out, but she persisted. "I have to tell you something."
"What is it?" Her father still sounded worried, but Quinn also heard the suspicion in his voice.
Quinn took a deep breath. This was it. She had to tell it now or she was afraid she wouldn't do it all and Rachel would spread the word on Gossip Girl. "I am pregnant."
It was just a whisper. Just three little words, but the effects were enormous. A squeal escaped from her mother's throat and she stared at her youngest daughter in horror. Her father on the other hand gave a sigh and looked extremely disappointed. Quinn could understand that. She would be disappointed with her too. It was quiet for a few moments and then her father's voice filled the silence. "Quinn, are you serious?"
He didn't yell at her, but his voice was full of his disbelief and disappointment, which was even worse. Quinn bowed her head, because she couldn't look him in the eyes. Tears filled her eyes and slowly fell down. "I am." She cried, "I'm sorry."
Russell Fabray swore, which he never did, unless there was something really wrong. "How can you be so stupid?"
"I'm sorry." Quinn cried, "I didn't think. I…"
"Well, that's obvious. Have you any idea what this means? Not only for you and your future, but for this whole family? How can you be so stupid to put all that in danger? How can you be so stupid?"
Quinn cringed with every rebuke he threw at her. Tears started flowing faster and her sobbing became louder. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." She kept repeating for it was the only she knew to say in this situation.
"Quinn." It was the first thing her mother said since she had revealed her big secret. "How long?"
"I-I don't know." Quinn stammered between two sobs, "I h-haven't been to the doctor. S-six or s-even weeks maybe."
"Then it's not too late."
Both Quinn and her father turned their heads in Judy Fabray's direction. Was she seriously suggesting an abortion? Quinn couldn't believe her mother would say something like that. As long as she could remember her mother had told people that every life was sacred and should be protected and now she was thinking about aborting her grandchild.
"Judy, are you crazy?" Her father used the exact words Quinn wanted to say, but she didn't dare to. "Quinn can't have…"
Her mother sighed. "I don't want her to have one too, but at least I'm trying to solve this problem instead of screaming at our daughter. She has made a huge mistake and she's going to be punished for it, believe me. But this baby won't go away if you yell at it. So instead of blaming Quinn, better think of a way to solve this problem."
"But an abortion, Judy… I can't… I mean I can't have my voters see my daughter getting an abortion."
"We could figure something out. I'm sure there are doctors willing to shut up for the right amount of money." Now she looked at Quinn. "Does anyone else know about this?"
"Puck." Quinn answered. "But he promised to keep it a secret. I trust him."
Her father snorted, but her mother gave a nod. "We'll make a deal with the Puckermans. Anyone else? Finn?"
Quinn shook her head. "I haven't told Finn yet, but…" She hesitated for a moment. "A girl from my school, Rachel Berry, found out and she threatened to send Gossip Girl a message."
"What?" Russell Fabray jumped and knocked over his chair. "That abominable website full of gossip? The one that Frannie was one a few years ago?"
Quinn looked down. "Yes. She said she would send a message to the website if you didn't stop boycotting her fathers."
"Her fathers?" Quinn's father looked confused and with a small glare at her mother, Quinn saw that she didn't understand it either. She sighed. "Berry's fathers are gay. They own a theatre on Broadway, but apparently you decided to boycott it, because they're…well, homosexual. Now they're almost bankrupt, so she wants you to lift the boycott. And if you don't, she'll spill my secret."
Her parents exchanged looks, but Quinn couldn't read what they were thinking. Eventually, her mother nodded and said: "I don't think we have a choice, do we, Russell?"
Slowly he shook his head. "I don't think we do." He looked Quinn straight in the eyes. "Don't worry, we're going to fix this."
Quinn gave a sigh from relief. Her parents would help her and her secret wouldn't appear on Gossip Girl. Still she felt she had broken something here tonight. Her parents had told her everything would be alright, but they hadn't hugged her like they usually did in situation like this. They hadn't told her they forgave. Her mother had told her she would get her punishment. Maybe her problems with Rachel and Gossip Girl were solved, but her parents weren't happy with her and she was still expecting a child.
Artie wheeled across the courtyard, looking for Tina. There was something he wanted to ask her and the bell that announced the start of the school day was about to ring. He didn't see her at their usual table which surprised him. She usually arrived earlier than he did and would sit down at that table reading a book or a magazine. Now the table was empty. He couldn't imagine she was late, since she was careful not to leave late or oversleep. He looked around, but didn't see her elsewhere. Maybe she was ill, he thought. But why didn't she send him a text? He checked his phone, because he could have missed her message, but he had received nothing. He started to feel worried that something bad might have happened to her. After all she was walking all alone to school and this was New York. You never knew what would happen even in this neighborhood. He decided to send her a text.
Are you okay? I missed you 2day at our table x Artie
After he had hit the send-button, the bell rang and he had no other choice than to go inside. Still he couldn't shake the feeling that something had happened to Tina. After the first two periods she hadn't replied, so Artie decided to call her in the break. As soon as he had pushed the call-button, a phone started ringing somewhere in the hallway. This could have been a coincidence if he hadn't heard the first notes of The Beatles song Revolution. He knew that was Tina's ringtone, because he had heard it when her mother called her after Brittany's party. He searched for her face in the crowd and then he spotted her. She was standing behind a group of other sophomores and held her phone in her hand but didn't answer it.
"Tina!" Artie wheeled across the hallway towards her. When she heard his voice, he saw a horrified look appear in her eyes, but when he was in front her, she had put on a smile. "H-hi Artie."
"Where were you this morning? I thought something happened to you."
She didn't meet his eyes when she answered and she seemed very uncomfortable around him, even more than she was when they first met. But it was her stutter that warned him, something was really wrong. "I-I was l-late."
"Tina, are you okay? Did something happen?"
She shook her head. "No, I j-just o-overslept. I b-barely w-was in t-t-time for c-class."
"So that's why you didn't answer my text?"
She nodded, but still didn't look him in the eyes. Artie sensed she was lying. There was something wrong, but he didn't know how to confront her without upsetting her even more. He was so blown away, that he didn't know what to do except ask the question that he was planning on asking. "Anyway, did you hear about Carole Ellison's charity party?"
"Y-yes." Tina simply answered. She was obviously happy he changed the subject, but still she didn't seem to be comfortable around him. She kept looking in different directions as if she was afraid someone might see them together.
"As you probably know, Carole is Finn's mom and he invited me. So I thought we could go together."
"You want t-to go to another Upper East S-side p-party?" She asked with a puzzled look on her face. "But t-t-the last one was a d-disaster. At least t-that's how it sounded."
"But this is different." Artie argued, "This isn't a birthday party with just teenagers. This is a real Upper East Side party with adults, fancy drinks and food and inspirational speeches. There won't be drunk teenagers or destroyed furniture. Besides if you go with me, it can't be bad." He grinned at her, but she didn't smile back. For a moment he was confused. The light, flirty mood between them had disappeared completely. He had tried to ignore it, because he thought it didn't have anything to do with him. But now she didn't even smile at a stupid joke he made, so it definitely was him. Unfortunately he couldn't back out, so he asked her anyway. "So will you go with me to Carole's party?"
She bit her and hesitated to answer. "I alr-r-ready have an app-p-pointment that n-night."
"Can't you reschedule?"
She shook her head. "I c-can't. I'm sorry, Artie. I h-have to go."
With those three sentences she walked past him, before he could protest, leaving him alone in the crowded hallway.
"Can you at least try to smile?" Kurt asked his father as they entered the elevator, "You look like you're a little child whose mother made him go to the birthday party of an awful great-aunt."
"Actually, that's exactly what I feel like." Burt murmured, as he straightened the sleeves of his tuxedo. Kurt glanced at him and had to admit that his father looked ridiculous in a tuxedo. For some reason it accentuated his height and his bald head, which weren't Burt's best point. Kurt hoped that Carole Ellison would like bald men that weren't that tall, but he was afraid she didn't. Finn was extremely tall, so his dad was probably a giant too. Now that they were so close, he was starting to get nervous. This party was when it all had to happen and there was so much that could go wrong. Maybe his father would want to leave after he donated the money. Maybe he wouldn't be able to find Carole. Maybe Carole was way too busy to talk to his father and the worst case scenario: there wouldn't be a click between his father and Carole. He had convincingly told Mercedes that Carole would fall for his father, but now he wasn't so sure anymore.
The doors of the elevator slid open when they arrived at the 7th floor where the party was held. The sound of people chatting, laughing and soft music came their way and they left the elevator. Immediately Kurt started looking for Carole and Finn, but he didn't see them. He did see Quinn, Santana and Brittany. Quinn had looked awful the last couple of days, but now she seemed to be fine again. She was wearing a beautiful blue dress that matched her eyes exactly. Santana was in red of course and Brittany wore a short black dress that left her back open. On the other side of the room he also spotted Puck, Mike and David, but no Finn.
"Well, we're here. Let's donate money."
This was what Kurt had been afraid of. His dad would donate money and leave as soon as possible. Quickly he grabbed two glasses of champagne from a tray that passing by. "Come on, dad. Let's enjoy the party first. You didn't come just to donate money to charity."
"Well, actually…" Burt started, but Kurt pushed the glass of champagne in his hand and said. "Cheers."
His father gave a sigh and toasted with him on the party, but he still looked uncomfortable. Kurt waved at a girl from school and searched the room again for Carole. He didn't see her, but he did see Finn this time. "Shall I introduce you to some friends of mine?"
Burt looked like he was going to decline the offer, but then he sighed and followed Kurt who made his way towards Finn.
Finn noticed them before they had arrived and waved. Quinn was standing next to him and didn't look as excited to see him as Finn did.
"Hey Kurt, I see you made it."
Kurt smiled. "I did and I brought my dad. I hope you don't mind, but this is a special charity for the both of us."
Finn nodded understandingly. "I get it, man." Then he turned towards Kurt's father. "So you're Burt Hummel? Nice to meet you, sir. I'm Finn Hudson. I'm the son of Carole Ellison who hosts the party."
"Yeah, I heard that. Nice to meet you too." Burt shook Finn's hand and looked at Quinn but didn't say anything. It seemed like he expected her to introduce herself, but she didn't. After an uncomfortable pause he asked if she went to the same school as Kurt and Finn.
Quinn put on a smile. "Well, I go to Constance, but I think that counts as the same school."
"That's Quinn Fabray. She's also a friend of mine." Kurt introduced her, "And she's Finn's girlfriend."
"Nice to meet you too, Quinn."
After that Burt didn't say much anymore. Kurt chatted with Finn and Quinn about the guests and how they were dressed – the latter he especially discussed with Quinn of course – while his father remained silent. It was pretty awkward conversation because Burt obviously felt uncomfortable around the teenagers. So Kurt decided there was nothing he could do except asking Finn if he knew where his mother was.
"I'd like to tell her in person how much this charity means to me and my dad." He explained.
Finn shook his head. "Sorry, Kurt. I haven't seen her since the party started. But if you don't see her, I'll tell her."
Kurt tried to hide his disappointment. Carole was the person he came for and he needed to introduce her to his father. He didn't want to leave without talking to her, but he could see his father disagreed with him on that. Everything about him screamed that he didn't really belong at this party and Burt knew that very well. For a second Kurt considered convincing his father to stay, but one glance at him made him realize that he couldn't bear to see his father so uncomfortable for any longer. So he smiled at Finn and Quinn. "Thank you. I think we're going to donate some money. I'll see you later."
With his father following Kurt walked to one of the tables with a pink box where you could leave your check with the amount of money you wanted to donate on it. Kurt watched his father grab a pen and filling in the check. Although he liked parties like these, he felt bad. He hadn't been able to reach his goal and he didn't know when he would get another chance to set his father up with Carole Ellison. Maybe it was better to get close to her via Finn. Finn seemed to like him after all. Maybe he could get Finn to introduce him or even tell his mom that he had an amazing style.
Lost in his thoughts Kurt only noticed the woman, as she spoke. "That's a generous donation, sir."
Kurt's eyes grew big, because it was not just a woman talking to his father. It was Carole. Suddenly she had appeared and even approached Burt without his interference. He wanted to tell his dad, she was the woman who was organizing all of this, but his father spoke first. "Well, I can afford it. I hired this tuxedo."
Kurt thought it was pretty embarrassing to admit that to an Upper East Sider, but Carole laughed at the joke. "Then I wished more men would hire their tuxedos, because we'd raise a lot more money."
"Yeah, probably." Burt laughed. Kurt turned around and searched the room for someone he knew. He discovered Isabelle Wright in the crowd and decided this was the perfect moment to talk to her. He turned his head around to tell his father he was going to talk to her, but his father barely noticed him anymore. Kurt smiled before he walked towards Isabelle. It seemed he didn't have to worry about that click anymore.
Quinn was standing on the balcony so she could oversee the whole room. The last couple of days crowded places like this scared her. She was afraid someone else would find out about her pregnancy, but tonight she wasn't scared. Her father had promised her to take care of it and he always kept his promises. Still she was pregnant and her parents weren't happy with her, but she finally felt like she had control over her life again. She had been able to decline all alcoholic drinks without raising suspicion and she still fit in the dress she had bought in Barcelona.
Her eyes followed Finn who just finished talking to a family friend and now made his way upstairs. He knew she would be here, because they both liked to overview the room at places like this. On a balcony like this they had shared their first kiss and also made their relationship official.
He was climbing the stairs as she heard the sound of the gossip girl alarm on her phone. She startled, but then she realized this couldn't be her. Her father had dealt with Rachel's parents, so she would keep her mouth shut. It was safe for her to check her phone.
The Fabrays have always intrigued me. Such a lovely, perfect senator family with a queen, and maybe even two Queens of Constance under their roof. But everyone knows that rumors and scandals follow our Queens and with the Fabrays it is no different. They only try extra hard to keep their mistakes a secret. I'm sorry, Mr. Fabray, but you can't sue me for telling the truth. Or isn't it true that your youngest daughter is with a child?
Yes, you heard me, Upper East Siders. In nine months baby Fabray will have her own baby and I bet someone else will have her precious crown.
Quinn's jaw had dropped and her face had grown pale. How was this possible? She thought her father would lift the boycott on Rachel's fathers, but apparently, he had tried to sue Gossip Girl. Why hadn't he just taken the deal? With horror she looked down and noticed that everyone was reading the Gossip Girl blast and talking about it. Her eyes shifted from the crowd to the stairs where Finn stood. He was looking at her and his stare was full of disbelief. Quinn felt like she couldn't breathe. How was this possible? None of this supposed to happen. A tear smeared her mascara and she grabbed the balcony because her legs felt like they were about to give in. Jumping over that balcony had never been so tempting.
