7.
It was in the middle of the night and not a single person was out, except a young college woman. She was on her way back to her dorm to get some sleep after what happened during the night's event. Unfortunately her dorm room was on the furthest part of the college and it would take her thirty minutes to reach her room and she was starting to feel too tired to walk any longer. Then she noticed the empty and dark park on her path and it got her thinking she could take a shortcut in the park, which was close by to her dorm so she would arrive their in the manner of minutes. So without a second thought the woman walked straight into the park, without a care in the world.
However the feeling of safety and confidence was starting to disappear the further into the park she went, but that wasn't all. Someone was walking behind her; she heard the footsteps against the pebbles on the path. Almost immediately she grew cautious and she began to quicken her steps, however whoever was following behind her did the same as well. Adrenaline was raising and her heart was beating out of control. She was afraid and instantly regretted entering the park. As she thought this, her follower grabbed her arm and forced her on the grass. She tried to struggle and fight back, but he or she was overpowering her. And before she knew what was happening, the most painful sensation she had ever experienced in her entire life was consuming her and slowly killing her on the inside before everything around her went dark.
A month had gone by and Four had been busy working on other homicides together with Zeke and Shauna, so he really haven't had the time to think much about the absence in his heart. He hadn't seen Tris much after the Al case was closed when Maggie Coleman's father was sentenced for first-degree murder. She had remained calm and almost stoic back at the courthouse in Candor, where she testified against him and sealed the deal in locking him up for a long time. After a few short words after the trial was over, they separated and he hadn't heard from her since then. Of course he wanted to stop by her place or call her, but he figured that it was best to leave her be for now and allow her to make the first move since she was the one who was reluctant to open up and allow him back in her life again. The ball was in her court and it was her time to serve the ball.
"Will you stop looking like a lost puppy first thing in the morning?" Zeke said rudely, interrupting his thoughts. Four turned around to see his partner with a scowl on his face and looked pretty much drained. Four deducted that Zeke had not yet gotten his morning coffee, so until he have had his coffee he was going to be very cranky and almost unbearable to be around till then.
"I guess you didn't have to time to grab some coffee back home," Four said, trying to hide his amusement. His face rested in his right hand that was placed on the top of his desk and stared at his partner who looked like he wanted to kill.
"Don't look all smug, just because you don't need coffee to get through the day," Zeke replied grumpily. He opened up his backpack and pulled out his coffee thermos and placed it on his desk before he poured the hot liquid in the cup and took a sip. Once he had his taste of coffee he turned his attention back on him. "I overslept this morning and I didn't have the time to drink a cup of coffee before work, since I only had time to brew it and then hurried out of the apartment. I seriously didn't want Eric to be on my back first thing in the morning because I was late."
Four nodded, understanding his reasoning since everyone knew how crazy Eric could be if you did anything against his rulebook. As annoying as it was, Four didn't want to hear more from Eric than what was necessary.
"Besides you should really stop looking like a lost puppy," Zeke continued and breathed in the smell of coffee beans, which was starting to smell in the entire room. "If you really want to see her again, you should just do it and get it over with. What is the worst that can happen? Other than reject you and shut you out."
Just the thought of that possibility made Four feel gloomy. Seriously, the prodigy detective Four was insecure about how to handle and proceed with his relationship with his former partner and ex-girlfriend. If he truly thought about it he was pretty sure what to do in most situations, but when it came to her it was like he was a rookie.
"I'll wait till she contact me, otherwise she will do exactly as you suggest and I don't really want that to happen," Four sighed. "Hopefully she will do it soon or else I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose my mind."
"She will," Zeke tried to reassure him, but Four wasn't as hopeful despite the fact how their relationship had taken a positive turn. "And then you two and get together and the rest of us can finally have some peace from your relationship."
Zeke said the last thing as a joke and somehow managed to get Four in a better mood until Eric walked in and barked at Four to follow him back into his office. Four almost scowled over being forced to spend time alone with Eric, but he somehow managed to maintain a more stoic appearance and he followed after him into his office. Once he was inside Eric shut the door behind him, making sure that no one was listening in on their conversation.
"I don't know how you did it, but the next time you try and do such a stunt again I'll make sure you will regret it!" Eric exclaimed in fury. Four tilted his head to the left, wondering what in the world he was talking about. He hadn't done anything to question Eric's position, so why would he accuse him for doing it? It wasn't like he was interested in having his job anyways.
"What are you talking about?" Four asked. He crossed his arms over his chest, waiting for where this was going since he really didn't have time to listen to Eric's ranting.
"First you bring in that woman as a civilian consultant without my consent and then once the case is over and no longer of use, she approaches the higher-ups with her resume. With her resume and good recommendations was instantly hired as a detective here in Dauntless," Eric explained with an angry and frustrated tone.
Four had to blink his eyes a few times to comprehend what exactly he was telling him. Was he talking about Tris? Had she really decided to go back in being a cop and what exactly made her change her mind?
All these questions were lingering in his mind, but he knew it was best to keep his questions to himself. He didn't need another reason to aggravate Eric's mood even more with his questions, especially when they really didn't get along well in the first place.
"Alright, so what exactly is your plan?" Four asked instead, redirecting the course of the conversation and hopefully end it faster.
Eric glared at him and looked like he wanted to strangle him, but instead he began grinning like a sneaky cat. Four almost immediately became guarded. He really didn't trust Eric on all levels, but when he was smiling like that he knew that whatever Eric had in mind was nothing good.
"I'm going to place her in your homicide team," Eric replied. "However I'm going to partner her up with Detective Uriah Pedrad, and from there she will be limited to who she is to work along side with. She needs to prove to me that she can do the job without your help before I'm going to officially allow her in Dauntless. Do you understand what I'm saying, Four?"
Loud and clearly, Four thought angrily to himself. He wanted to punch or kick something in frustration. Tris was a excellent detective and shouldn't be proving herself like she was a rookie detective, but then again Eric really didn't know her and didn't have a reason to trust her since she hadn't gone directly to him to apply for the job.
"I have no objections," Four shrugged dismissively. "Is that all? I have work to do."
"As long as you understand and don't try and defy me, then I don't have anything else to say."
Without anything else to say Four left the room in silence and forced himself not to slam the door behind him. If Tris before didn't infuriate him, then she definitely did now after this encounter with Eric. Of all the reckless and stupid things she could do, she just had to go against people's backs and hide what she was doing. She should have told him that she was joining the force again that way he could actually guide her and make sure she didn't step on the wrong people's toes like Eric. However despite how much she infuriated him and made her job a lot more difficult he did have to admit that she had guts to do what she did. It must have taken a lot of guts and he knew she had been very brave in order to do it, but he couldn't help wonder how long it lasted before it was no longer enough. Tris needed to be careful and use all her great qualities to get through this job otherwise things was going to be a lot more harder for her than necessary. And Four seriously didn't want her to slip away again like she did the last time.
Tris walked straight into the station with attempt to keep her head up high, since she was pretty sure that there were few people who didn't like how she applied to get a job to be homicide detective. It had been pure luck that Tori was well-connected with the higher-ups of Dauntless Police Department and gave the most splendid recommendation, despite the fact that she would lose her as a tattoo artist. But when she had talked with Tori about returning to her former occupation, she was sad over losing a good employee, but she knew that where she truly belonged was working to solve homicides and even if they were no longer working together she and Bud would still continue to be her friends. So things didn't really change other than her occupation, to which Tris was more than happy and satisfied with the solution.
However it had taken some time before Dauntless officially hired her as a homicide detective. Not surprising really, she had to retake her firearm permit that allowed her to carry a gun in duty. And even though she was slightly rusty since she hadn't fired a gun in two years, she managed to catch up quickly and aced the test with flying colors. Anyways before she knew it everything was settled and she was to work at the homicide department a month after Al's case had been officially settled and closed.
She pressed the elevator button that lead to the upstairs offices and entered the compartment she could feel her stomach starting to grow butterflies. She was nervous and she wasn't afraid to admit that, since it has been a long time since she truly worked as a cop and she hoped that she was going to do well there. Even though she had no clue who was her partner or who exactly was her boss, of course she knew that Lieutenant Coulter was head of the homicide department, but based on what she had been told she was assigned to a specific homicide team and together worked on cases. Nonetheless she was excited and almost wanted to leap straight into the first case right away. However she knew that it might take some time before she would be officially be considered a part of the team and had to earn her respect among her coworkers.
The elevator stopped at her floor and literally interrupted her thoughts, so she was slightly dazed when she left and entered the office where the detectives had their desks. It was also the room where she had been working in when she was helping Four and his team out during the Al case. She looked around the room to see if any of them were there, but quickly realized that they were nowhere in sight. Tris sighed and thought to herself that it might be a good thing that they weren't there yet, more accurately that Four wasn't there. They hadn't seen or spoken with each other for the last month other than a few quick words back in Candor. And even so she was pretty sure Four would have liked to know that she had decided to join the force again and he was probably going to be pissed once he realized that she hadn't told him. But what exactly was she supposed to say? They weren't a couple nor were they partners or close friends. They had talked about closing the gap between them, but she had no clue how to do that. When she thought about it, it might be reasons like this that made it very hard for them to grow closer and reestablish their relationship.
"Hey, do you need help with something?" someone asked, catching Tris off guard and instantly turned in the direction of the voice. She was surprised to see a tall and handsome man with dark brown skin and dark brown eyes. He smiled at her and his smile looked white against his bronze skin. He had brown hair and she noticed a snake tattoo behind his ear. To sum it all up, he looked incredibly similar to Zeke, but there were some subtle characteristics that were his own. It was then Tris realized this must be Zeke's younger brother, Uriah. The same Uriah, she almost elbowed in the face when Four had brought her down to the station.
"Well, that depends," Tris said. She shifted her body awkwardly and was not exactly sure how to act around him, despite the fact that Zeke reassured her that his brother didn't hold grudges against her during their first meeting. "I'm new here and I'm not sure who I'm suppose to check in with, since I don't know who I'm assigned to or who my partner is."
Uriah chuckled and let out his hand for a handshake, which she shook carefully and smiled gently at him.
"I can't really answer your first question," Uriah said. "But if you are Detective Tris Prior, then I can inform you that I'm going to be your partner."
"Really," Tris said stunned. She nervously tucked a stray piece of her hair behind her ear. "Then I hope you will take care of me and together can work nicely. And I wanted to say sorry about our first meeting."
"Oh?" Uriah tilted his head in question. "What for?"
"You know, for trying to elbow you in the face when you came to bring me in," Tris explained.
"If I remember correctly, you warned me not to touch you," Uriah laughed. "It was my fault for not listening and besides I'm over it. In fact I was impressed how you managed to catch me of guard. So don't worry about it. I'm actually looking forward to work together with you, so let's do great work together partner."
He smiled with this great ease that made it so easy to relax around him. If she had any doubt about doing this before it was instantly thrown out the window now since Uriah seemed like an easy-going and reliable person, so she had no worries that their partnership shouldn't work. So it wasn't hard for her to return the gesture and smiled back at him, which made him smile even more than before.
"Now, let's get you settled in with Eric," Uriah said. "Then we shall start our partnership by heading over to Erudite. Four and Zeke are down there right now and we'll meet up them then."
Tris nodded. She was unsure how things between Four and her was going to work, both on and off work, but she was hopeful that they could somehow be civil with each other during cases despite the insecurity where their relationship was currently standing. So without much anything left to say she was escorted to Lieutenant Coulter's office.
Four was almost grateful that he and Zeke were called out to a crime scene. He wasn't confident that he could keep his temper once Tris showed up at the office. But he knew that he might not be as lucky for long, since there was still the chance she and Uriah would come over and help out with the case. Even though he planned on remaining civil with her at least while working the case, but he might not be such in private and did he have plans to have a long talk with her once they were off work. Until then he was going to focus on the case before him.
The crime scene was located at Erudite College, which was located in the middle of the city. It was one of the biggest colleges in the five cities of Chicago and they took pride in maintaining their outstanding repetition of being the most prestigious college. This homicide however could put a strain on their reputation, which is why the city was putting pressure on them to solve this case quickly and without any trouble.
When Four and Zeke arrived at the campus they continued walking straight towards the park areas. They found the crime scene that was filled with several officers gathering statements and the crime scene techs gathering forensic evidence. Zeke went over to the officers to catch up with the information the officers had gathered; meanwhile Four went over to the body where Christina was doing her initial examination before the autopsy back at her lab.
"What do we got, Christina?" Four asked. He squatted to take a closer look at the body. The victim was female and was lying on the grass ground on her stomach.
"Based on my initial examination, estimated time of death was late last night. And the victim suffered from a lethal wound to the abdomen," Christina explained and showed him the injury by turning the body on its back. "But I need to do a autopsy to confirm cause of death, even though it is quite obvious, but just to prove the facts."
Four nodded and stared at the victim. She was young and very beautiful with long blond hair and brown eyes, but the sight that met him was anything than beautiful. She had multiple lacerations over her body and he wasn't sure if they came from defending herself or from the actual attack.
"I can also tell you that she was killed here, since there is no indication that the body had been moved based on the
"Any sign of sexual assault?" Four asked. He hoped more for the victim and her family's sake that she had not been raped. The woman died with the last moments of her life being traumatized in the worst way than anything else she had ever experienced during her short life. And her family hearing those kind of news was horrible and emotionally straining to them, especially when they had already lost their loved one. It was no use to bring them anymore bad news than necessary.
"I…I found bruising in the vaginal area, but I need to exam it closer to confirm it," Christina said strained.
Four sighed. Things were already not looking good for the victim. Whoever killed her had been brutal, especially if he or she had to rape her before he or she killed her and he was determined to figure out who did it and make sure that they found whoever did it was put behind bars.
"Zeke, did you find out anything about the victim?" Four shouted. He got up on his feet and stood there when Zeke walked up to him with his notepad in his hands.
"The victim's name is Geena Morris, twenty years old, chemistry student at Erudite College," Zeke explained, reading through his notes. "She was found early this morning by a couple of joggers, they saw her on the ground all bloody and immediately called the police. No one of the eyewitnesses knew her, but I'll try and locate and notifying her friends and family. Hopefully they can give us some light about why she was out last night and who would possibly try and do this to her."
Four agreed with the plan and wanted to tag along with Zeke to get more close information about the victim, but he also knew that he needed to go back to the morgue for Christina's autopsy. He was starting to feel conflicted, being pulled in two different directions. What was he going to do?
As he thought this, an excited voice interrupted him and said, "We are here boss. What do you us to do?"
Four turned to look around in the direction of the voice and saw Uriah and Tris walking up to him. Uriah had the enjoyable grin on his face while Tris kept this blank expression on her face like she was immediately focused on the job. Four didn't point out that fact instead informed both of them of the case. Both of them listened intently, but Four started to notice that Tris was starting to grow a little tense. However he shrugged it off as her way of reacting to the murder.
"So what do you want us to do?" Tris asked with a slight edge in her voice. Her arms were crossed over her chest and staring at the victim like she expected it to jump up. Four's brow went up and looked at her with question. He knew Tris, not everything, but enough to know how she would be during an investigation. Something was definitely off with her. And whatever it was she was too distracted and tense to be working with any potential witnesses and notifying friends and family members.
"I want you two to go back to the morgue with Christina," Four ordered. He turned to look at Christina who looked like she was ready to go. The body bag was on the gurney ready to be transported to the morgue, so there was nothing that stopped them from going. "Wait for the autopsy results and see if you can find any leads in the victim's bank records and possible criminal records. Keep me informed."
Uriah and Tris left shortly after with Christina not far behind them. They were talking between themselves and Four was glad that Tris managed to bond with her new partner easily, especially since she was a little socially awkward, but everyone in the police department knew that if there was anyone who could easily ease up tension in a room it was Uriah. Which is why whoever had chosen these two to become partners had made the perfect choice, even though a part of him had wanted to be her partner again, but that is all in due time once she has proven herself to Eric and was officially accepted in Dauntless PD. Besides there was something else that caught his attention watching them leave the crime scene together. It was how Tris acted around Uriah, even more Christina. She was relaxed and seemed to be enjoying the people she was hanging with. They acted like they were close friends, possibly even best friends. But that went more specifically to how Tris and Christina interacted than to Uriah and Tris. The two women had this air of familiarity and closeness that almost immediately lit up like fire that Tris and Christina had hung out together after the whole incident back in Christina's morgue a month ago. And though Four was happy that Tris had made some friends here in Dauntless besides her former co-workers in the tattoo shop, he was also slightly hurt that Tris had willingly spent time with and become friends with Christina, meanwhile she kept him at an arm-length and didn't even try to contact him for a month. Again Four decided not to get into the whole thing right now since they were on the clock, but once they were off for the evening he was sure to confront her with everything he got and this time she couldn't run away from him. Then he shook his head and turned around to go and catch up with Zeke, no longer thinking about the blond-haired woman who was walking away from the scene alive instead thinking about the blond-haired girl who had been lying dead on the ground and was now expecting him to find out who did this to her and bring whoever to justice.
Christina was in far too many ways different from her, but Tris was glad that the two of them had connected and become best friends despite only knowing each other for a little over a month. They completed each other and truly enjoyed each other's company, even though Tris didn't enjoy shopping or other similar interests to shopping as much as Christina did. But that sort of thing was just stupid to compare how much they cared about each other and Tris had never regretted in becoming her friend.
So when the three of them got back to the station, Uriah went up to the office to check up on criminal and financial records on the victim while she and Christina went down to the morgue. The body had already arrived and was lying on the table with a white bed sheet covering most of the body except the face and the end of the victim's feet. Christina changed quickly into her doctor scrubs and put on a pair of latex gloves on before she carefully put a piece of her stray hair behind her ear.
"So tell me how is your first day on the job so far?" Christina asked. She began moving all of the victim's personal items she found in the pockets and placed them in evidence bags. Then she began removing the clothes, leaving the body plain naked. Tris looked awkwardly away and tried to stare at the floor until Christina covered her up again with the sheet.
"No much to tell really since I only arrived here about an hour ago," Tris said simply. "But I guess I'm good for now. I am though a little sad that this person is dead, since no one really deserves to die this way or any way for that matter."
Christina nodded as she began closely examining the wounds. She lifted up the victim's arms where you could clearly see cuts all over her forearms on both sides.
"Are those defensive wounds?" Tris asked, eyeing closely at the injuries on her forearms.
"Yeah, she obviously tried to defend herself," Christina nodded. "Let's hope she managed to fend herself long enough to have gathered DNA or any trace evidence from her killer."
Christina grabbed a Q-tip and began swabbing underneath the fingernails. Fortunately enough there was something embedded into her fingernails and Christina told her she was going to send it to trace. Then Christina began taking some photos of the body before she was going to take a further examination the injury to the abdomen and later on opening up the body with her scalpel.
Tris left Christina to do her work, meanwhile she put a pair of latex gloves before she walked over to the other side of the table to go through the victim's personal affects. There wasn't much on her at the time of the murder. They had found the victim's phone and wallet not far from the body when they found her, so there wasn't much on her body. Tris found some pocket debris, a pack of gum and a piece of paper that had been folded and unfolded many times. Obviously this piece of paper must have been important enough to the victim since she had folded and unfolded the paper multiple times. So Tris opened the evidence bag and unfolded the paper. It was a note addressed to the victim and said:
If you are interested in continue our private sessions.
Meet me at my office, nine pm tomorrow evening.
Prof. CP
The victim had gone out last night to see whoever had written this note. And even though she had no clue what their private sessions were about it was worth checking into to know the victim's last whereabouts before she was killed. Tris read the note several times. Her eyes were dilated due to the fact that she recognized the nice and neatly written signature anywhere. And even though she prayed that it wasn't whoever she thought it was there was no way she was going to risk this case due to her connections with the one who wrote that note.
"Something wrong?" Christina asked, noticing the worried and distraught expression on her face.
"Yeah, there might be," Tris said distracted and put the note back into the evidence bag. "Look, I need to go and check up on something. If I'm right I need to talk to Lieutenant Coulter and then I need to get off the case.
"What? Need to get off the case!" Christina exclaimed. Tris nodded and hurried to pull off the gloves. "Why? Is something wrong? I don't understand."
"For everyone sakes, I hope I'm not right," Tris explained before she hurried off to the door. "But if I am then my involvement in the case can cause a lot of trouble, possibly even damage the case."
And before Christina had the chance to respond Tris was already out the door and heading upstairs to check in with Uriah. During the whole time all that went through her mind was praying and cursing that if it was the one who she thought had written the note, then there was no way she was going to be a part of anything. If things really turned out to be that person was guilty of murder and possibly rape on a young woman, then she wasn't going to stand by him and be by his side because she had still not forgiven him and she wasn't planning on forgiving him anytime soon. After all that person had been so damn against her being a cop as well her wish to solve her parents murder, but most of all her former relationship with Tobias.

Here's another chapter, hope you guys like it. I had a goal to update this story to day of the premiere of the Divergent series: Insurgent, which is tonight and I managed to do surprisingly. I'm super excited about the movie and can't wait to go and see it. I already love the soundtrack of the movie, which I highly recommend listening to, and I hope that this movie is going to be as good and entertaining as the first movie.
Other news, this is a new story arc and is not relevant to Tris's parents unsolved murder. I'm building up the tension and the relationships before I'll start that story arc, so hopefully you will continue liking the story. I promise to keep writing on this because even though it is my first try in writing in this genre I actually enjoy myself a lot to continue writing on it.
Thank you all for the many reviews, favorite and followings and please continue doing so, and hopefully I will be able to update this story soon. But until then...
