as the light of the sun broke through the ruined forest balto stepped out of the trench and stretched yawning the events from a few days ago still fatigued his body and his coat still had spots of blood on it
IN TOWN THROUGH JENNAS POINT OF VIEW
as the sun shown on the trawler deck it broke into the cabin where jenna was snuggeled up in baltos blanket like she had done for the past weeks she sat and waited for them to return from the mountains
On the frontline in the forest balto and kodi were getting home sick as more and more american soldiers arrived from the inland the lines were strengthend and balto and kodi were ready to head back home as the sun rose high in the sky they were ready to make the return trek when they were stopped by two labs
A/N HOPPER WAS A BROWN LAB
as they approched them balto though they were going to ask them what happened to hopper and try to blame it on him but they went on to question where they were headed balto gave a simple answer and hiked off into the forest with kodi at his heels as they made it to the half way point balto heard a twig snap behind him and turned to face the noise as he prepared to charge two chocolate labs stepped out and the explained they needed to get to the town and didn't know where they were going balto told them they could tag along just don't fall to far behind or they would be left behind and with that they started their journey down the mountain as the sun fell behind the mountains they snuck down the mountain and entered the town of nome the two labs split up and started stalking around town balto and kodi made their way to the boiler room to greet their mates as they entered all the dogs of home where in the building talking when balto and kodi walked in every one stopped what they were doing like they had seen a ghost the silence was broken by jenna and dusty who broke through the crowd of dogs and started hugging and kissing them balto hissed when jenna touched a spot on his body where he had been hit with the butt of a rifle as he went to talk she saw the blood on his coat and kodi's coat when she went to ask what happened balto said he would explain later as the dogs one by one went home kaltag kodi jenna dusty and balto remained in the room kaltag had been sitting in the second story area he stepped down and walked and sat down over in a corner in the boiler room as he went to drinking from his bowl he heard jenna talking to balto this is how that conversation went jenna started off asking questions "balto what happened why is there blood on your coat did you get hurt what happened" balto saw kaltag in the corner over and asked him to please leave as kaltag stood up and made his way to the door he said goodnight and left balto continued with his story of the battle field he started coughing and from coughing he went to crying" oh God jenna I killed someone he was a kid just a kid he had to be 17 years old I killed him a bit him in the throat until I killed him I saw so much death and violence I can't stop seeing its….its….like on a loop it never stops people stabbing each other men picking up rocks and hitting each other with the butts of rifles and men using shovels hacking away at each other and then there was a the gun that shot flames watching men burning the smell oh God the smell it was awful I can't make it go away" and with that he tripped up and started crying even more once he got to the the topic of hoppers death he lost and and told the story between sobs" I got hopper killed went to hunt I got him killed he's dead because of me jenna has dead because of me I wondered away from the group into the woods and he died cause I wanted to explore am so selfish I got him killed oh God I'm sorry hopper" and with that balto fell over sobbing jenna and kodi helped him up off the floor and took him to jennas house where they went to the shed and jenna and balto laid down and fell asleep
AT KODI AND DUSTYS HOUSE
Kodi and dusty were nuzzling each other like crazy as kodi pulled away he started to breath heavily dusty walked up next to him to steady him as he was hyperventilating when he stopped panicking she slowly helped him to her bed and laid him down now she was panicked not knowing what was happening to her mate as he started to slowly fall asleep she fell asleep next to him
IN KODI'S DREAM
the sound of men yelling the smell of blood and the sight of men hacking stabbing and beating each other to death came back to him only this time he saw his dad savagely murder a man then move onto the next one ripping at his throat and pulling out his jugular making blood spurt every where as he watched he felt a searing pain in his side as a bullet hit him went through and hit the tree behind him as he looked down he saw a man looking at him kodi fell over and all went black
OUT OF KODI'S DREAM
as he woke up he was sweating and whimpering he stood up and went outside and felt the cool wind on his face dusty walked up behind him as she spoke it made him jump off the ground in fear he turned around to face her he had not emotions just blank "war can do things to you dusty im glad you didnt have to see what i saw" and with that he stepped outside and walked off into town
