Hello! It's been a while, two months to be exact! I hope you all enjoy this chapter and I should be writing more often now that I have a bit more time! I want to say a massive thank you to those who began following this despite the lack of updates and the ones who commented saying how much they enjoy the story! Also, those who read my other story, Going Back to Being Lost, and following it and liking it. :)
Thank you!
The sun hit my skin before I was ready for it to. This sleep was incredibly better than its predecessor and I didn't want to ruin it by waking up. The bed was softer today, the blankets wrapped around me felt like clouds against my skin as cliché as that was. But something was wrong. They didn't smell like Felix. They smelt like-
"Peter," I grumbled into the pillow without opening my eyes. There went all the good thoughts I was having. Last night was foggy in my mind and I only remember up to when he unfroze himself but I knew I should not be happy to be in his bed. He probably wasn't happy to have me in his bed. I had won the game last night, if he even knew or not, and that on top of my meltdown would not be a good combination.
Where was he anyway?
I sat up and the room looked much like Felix's. It had various weapons on the walls and a bed, table, and dresser. There were two windows instead of one and the room itself was bigger. Probably to match his sense of superiority. There was also a large map of the island spread over the wall next to the door. I squinted to read the details of it but I was too far. I knew nothing of the island besides my immediate surroundings. When my brothers and I were on our "tour" yesterday, I knew Felix was just using it as a distraction of sorts. He barely showed us a mile away from camp. I wanted to know what other secrets the island held besides the glowing rocks. This reminded me to look more into the rocks. They were special and I wanted to know why.
Full of newfound curiosity, I moved my legs off the bed, I would go find Felix to see exactly how much damage I did last night, but my foot brushing against a person stopped me.
Peter was lying on his stomach shirtless, eyes closed softly in sleep and his long eyelashes brushed his cheeks. His shoulders moved up and down gracefully as he breathed. He finally looked like the teenage boy he was, exhausted from playing a game instead of being a leader of an island.
"Stop staring at me, Wendy."
Somehow, although his eyes never opened and I didn't make a sound, he knew I was watching him. My foot barely touched him so I wasn't entirely sure how he knew I had my eyes locked on him. Regardless, I averted my eyes out of embarrassment of being caught.
"How'd you…?" I asked the top of the bed.
He sighed. "I just know."
I looked back at him and he still looked like he was asleep. He made no move to get up or even open his eyes. I pushed myself off the bed and sat on the floor between him and the bed. I crossed my legs so I didn't touch him and continued to stare at his face.
After a few moments, he opened one of his eyes. "What?"
"Can I ask you something?" He could tell me what happened last night even though he wasn't my first choice. Was he angry that I had won? The memory of my reveal was foggy and I don't remember seeing the look on his face.
He sighed again and rolled over to his side to face me. I kept my eyes trained on his face instead of letting them wander to his obviously sculpted chest. "You don't have to worry about your brothers. I fixed it." The arrogance that normally was in his eyes was nowhere to be found. It was just him telling me he talked to my brothers. No double meaning. No annoying smirk.
"I'm sorry." I didn't want to apologize. It was his fault I flipped but something urged me to say it anyway.
Peter's eyebrows meshed together for a moment before dominating their rightful place on his face. He sat up quickly before standing and walking away from me. I noticed the gold chain hanging around his neck, it must hold the vial of glowing sand.
I followed his movement by standing as he pulled on a shirt, much to my unknown dismay. "I just didn't know why they weren't talking to me. It's never happened in twelve years."
He turned around to face me again. "Don't apologize, okay? It wasn't your fault. They shouldn't have ignored you. I fixed it. The problem is solved."
I gave him an uneasy look. Nothing that resentful could be fixed with a few words. John idolized him but nothing can bury that much hate in a few hours.
"I'm serious, Wendy. It's taken care of."
I still gave him a frown. "Thanks for letting me sleep here."
His lips turned into the smirk I've learned to ignore. "A thank you and a sorry, Gwendolyn? This is very unlike you." He stepped towards me with arrogance. "I should let you sleep here more often. Must have had good dreams in my bed."
I decided to humor him and nod. "I would really, really appreciate it." I watched his eyebrow arch in amusement. "Felix's bed just isn't the same."
"Better dreams?"
I shrugged. "Amongst other things."
He grinned at me and shook his head in slight disbelief before he weaved his black leather belt through the loops of his pants. I awkwardly stood there for a second before turning towards the door. "Before you go-"
"Yes?" I asked.
"How did you beat me, Wendy?"
My brow moved together in confusion before smoothing out. "I told you I wasn't stupid, Peter."
He shook his head. "You couldn't do it again."
I shrugged, opening the door. "I guess you'll have to keep me around until the next game and hope you remember to put me on your team." I stepped into the warming air outside.
Before I shut the door behind me, I heard him say quietly, "I guess so."
After breakfast with Michael and Felix, John was still being distant, Felix offered to take us to get washed up at the springs he showed us the day before and I greedily took the offer with open arms. I could feel the dirt on my skin and the grease in my hair. John of course denied the offer, saying he'll go with the other boys and Michael agreed. I reluctantly let them.
As we walked towards the springs, I told Felix about my morning with Peter.
"He said I couldn't beat him again." I rolled my eyes for effect.
Felix smiled at my confidence. "He must not have paid attention last night which, by the way, was great how you revealed you had his flag."
"I honestly don't remember doing it," I confessed to him. Maybe I had done it in an extravagant way?
Felix stepped onto a large, fallen tree trunk and began walking on it as I continued on the safe ground. "Well, you told me you would find him once you found it and that's exactly what you did."
I remembered that was the plan and I executed it. I captured the flag and went on a man hunt. "How did I tell him?"
Felix laughed at the memory. "You fainted but you were in the middle of consciousness and you pulled it from your pocket and said 'tell Peter I'm coming for him'."
I laughed with him and covered my face with my hands. "Why would I say that?"
Felix shrugged before jumping from the log. "I'm not entirely sure." I shook my head from embarrassment and he touched my shoulder. "It's fine. He has bad memory." I gave him a doubtful look and a smile spread across his face. "I'm trying to make you feel better."
"Thanks," I said, following him through a dense pack of brush. I was beginning to get lost again. The trees were blending together in a haze of green and brown. I knew I needed to learn the island quick but these escapades weren't helping me much.
We reached the springs and it was more beautiful than I remembered. There was a large rock waterfall that poured water onto a series of rock ledges and into the large spring itself. The water was crystal clear and I could see down to the multicolored rocks below. It shined almost like there were crystals beneath the surface but I couldn't be sure. It was too deep.
He handed me my new set of clothes and a bar of soap. "I'll be back in twenty minutes."
"You're not staying to swim?" I placed the clothes on a larger rock. I didn't mind if he stayed. I could swim in my clothes and still get clean.
His cheeks turned pink as he shook his head. "No, I'll be back to pick you up."
I nodded and suppressed a smile at his embarrassment. I wondered who the last girl he saw was. "Alright," I said pulling off my boots and socks.
"If you get scared, just call my name, okay? Call mine or even Peter's. Someone will come."
"Okay."
He gave me a departing smile. "I'll be right back."
Felix left the same way we had come and I realized how quiet it was here. All I heard was the water rushing over the rocks and the sound of birds chirping. It was peaceful.
I pulled off my clothes quickly before grabbing the bar of soap and jumping into the water. I felt the cool water surge around me, instantly relaxing me. I felt nice to be at piece for a minute.
I swam around for a few minutes, going underneath the water fall and back until I felt cleansed. The soap was rinsed from my hair and I felt clean for the first time since I left London.
I swam back to the side of the water and reached for the sheet Felix brought for me to dry off when I noticed the trees moving.
"Hello?" I called towards the movement. Great, Wendy. Something was off about this.
"Felix?" I asked quietly.
Then in a flash, I was being pushed under the water. I panicked and breathed in, water rushed into my lungs. I tried kicking and pushing but the person had a tight hold on my hair. I knew I was going to drown.
I opened my eyes and began screaming under water. The hand pulled up and I was able to take a breath and screamed a name.
Then it pushed me back under.
Thank you for reading! The next chapter should be up in a few days! :)
