The journey to Slater's apartment had been a long and awkward one. Elena was constantly staring forward, her mouth in a tough line while Rose's face kept alternating between hopeful and guilty. Ellie had given up trying to make conversation about ten minutes into the journey and had succumbed to just sitting in silence.

As the unlikely trio began to make their way up some stairs leading to Slater's apartment Ellie took a moment to gather her surroundings. The stairs appeared to be quite old and worn and occasionally one of them would squeak. The walls were a faded white with odd bits of paint chipped of. Overall it didn't look like somewhere a vampire would live. Ellie guessed that, that was probably what Slater was going for, what with his…occupation.

As they reached the top of the stairs they reached a final door. It was grand and chipped, broken white. Rose stared at Elena, judging her, before her eyes flicked to meet Ellie's. Ellie nodded slightly and Rose reluctantly banged on the door. After a moment of silence Rose began to yell through the door.

"Slater? Slater, it's Rose. Open up."

When no one replied Rose glanced at Ellie trying to convey a message. Rose feared the worst in this situation but didn't want Elena to know yet. Rose glanced back to Elena and spoke again.

"He's not here. Sorry."

"No. We didn't come all this way out here for nothing." Elena said with impatience in her voice.

Rose turned to face her fully for a second, evaluating her determination before speaking.

"Ellie? What's your view on this?"

Ellie half jumped at being addressed before she began to hesitantly reply.

"Elena's…right. We can't give up straight away."

Looking slightly betrayed Rose rolled her eyes and turned back to the door. After a few seconds she placed both hands on the door and pushed the doors open, snapping the chain that had held them shut. Ellie jumped slightly as the loud, echoing noise it made before stepping into the apartment. Realising that Rose and Elena had made no move to enter Slater's house Ellie turned back to them.

"What are you waiting for?" she asked, slightly impatiently. If they had dragged her out all this way they better make it worthwhile.

Silently the doppelganger and vampire entered the apartment. Ellie looked around as Rose began to walk off, calling Slater's name. The apartment was furnished a lot more expensively than the outside. It was undeniably modern and had an arty feel to it. Despite the numerous lights the apartment still felt rather dark and Ellie couldn't help feel like something was of.

Ellie jumped slightly as she heard Rose's voice from a few metres away.

"I don't think he's going to be much help."

Ellie shared a quick glance with Elena before running to where Rose was standing. When her eyes fell on Slaters body it took a moment for her brain to register what had happened. When it finally connected she began to feel rather faint. Up until the whole thing had felt unreal, more like a game than reality. Now she had been bought back to Earth with a sharp jolt. This was real and people were dying. There was someone out there who was against them, always one step ahead of them. Taking a step away from body Ellie managed to issue a few words from her dry throat.

"Urm, I'm just gonna grab some water…from the kitchen…"

After speaking her excuse Ellie walked away from the scene quickly as she could. She spared a quick glance around the apartment before seeing what looked like a kitchen through one of the half open doors. Heading over to it Ellie walked in to find a cosy but up to date kitchen. Reaching out for the next cupboard Ellie was relived to find some cups. It wouldn't have surprised her if there hadn't been any, seeing as Slater didn't really have a use for them.

Ellie poured herself a large cup of water and sat down on top the glass table. The water cooled her down and she felt herself begin to relax. She closed her eyes for a minute and let her body lose the tenseness. A few moments later there was a load crash and then sobbing from the other room. Ellie jumped and as she did the cup flew out of her hand and smashed all over the floor, spilling the glass everywhere. Panicked Ellie ignored the large puddle on the floor and glanced out the door. There was a girl sobbing in Rose's arms. Confused Ellie glanced at Elena who met her gaze. 'Alice', Elena mouthed, 'Girlfriend'. Ellie nodded, her mouth in a grim line. The poor girl had to be going through so much pain. Ellie was distracted from her thoughts as she felt some of the water she had spilt wash over her feet. Stepping back into the kitchen and closing the door Ellie glanced around for something she could use to clean up the mess.

The only thing that could be at all helpful was an almost empty roll of paper towel. Ellie grabbed the last few sheets and began to try and mop up the spill. Within seconds the paper was soaked and there seemed to be more water than before. Frustrated, Ellie threw the sopping paper towel on to the floor and then quickly jumped back. The floor was on fire.
