A week pasted by but for Amelia it felt like a decade. Earlier that day she got a message from Ludwig saying that he would pick her up around seven in the evening and has spent then rest of the day preparing. She joyfully hummed a little tune as she walked around her room gathering up what she needed. Amelia was just about to get the dress Ludwig gave her out of it's box when she heard the front door of her apartment open. She grabbed a knife off her nightstand and quietly moved towards her door. Peaking out into the living room her curiosity immediately turned into displeasure. Ivan stood in the center of her living room. He wore his usual scarf with a white button up shirt, black pants, and combat boots.
Sighing she stepped out of her room and glared at him. "How did you get in?" She asked.
"I made myself a key," He gave her his usual uncomfortable smile. "It's been a while."
"Not long enough." Amelia muttered as she turned to head back into her room. She slammed the door closed hoping to ignore the unpleasant presence in her living room.
"Are you going somewhere?" Ivan called curiously from the other side of the door.
"Yes, actually," Amelia made sure that he could hear the bitterness in her voice as she spoke. "I'm heading to a ball." She reached for the box again and began to remove the dress. There was a cold silence coming from the other side of the door but Amelia ignored it. She slipped into the dress and picked out some gold jewelry to match it. Once she was ready she opened her bedroom door to fine Ivan still standing on the other side.
"This ball... are you attending with Ludwig?" he asked. Ivan was still smiling but it seemed off. Instead of making Amelia feel uncomfortable it sent shivers down her spine and made him seem more dangerous.
"Y-Yes." She admitted.
Ivan stared at her for a moment and his eye scanned her over. The smile fell from his face and the both stood there in silence until he spoke again. "Hmm... I think you looked better in red." He muttered eyeing her dress.
"You've never seen me in red," Stated Amelia. Ivan just smirked as she stared at him with suspicion. "Never mind," She sighed and shook her head. "Ludwig is going to be here soon and I don't want you here when he arrives." Amelia walked past him and grabbed her purse off the coffee table.
"Well I do not want you going to the ball, Comrade."
Ivan's tone left no room for argument but Amelia still protested. "I am going to the ball. You can't keep me from going."
"I don't want you going." He repeated.
"I will be going," Amelia glared at him. "Besides, you are the one that was telling me to find out what he is up to. Doesn't that mean that I should stick close to him?"
"Interpret it how ever you want but you shouldn't keep this up. If you get too close to them they will start digging around and if they figure out that you are not Cara Hertz they will kill you." He warned.
Amelia scowled. "I understand that. I've done these sort of jobs before. I don't need you to lecture me."
"I don't think you really understand," Ivan hissed. "Your head is full of him. You could have gotten those records by now but you have barely lifted a finger to find them."
"Oh. I get it now," Amelia rolled her eyes. "You're just angry because you think that I'm playing more instead of working." Deep down Amelia knew that this was true but she refused to admit it in front of Ivan.
"I'm not wrong. It seems that he has all of your attention while the two jobs I have given you seem to be forgotten." He glared down at her in frustration.
"He has a name you know. It's Ludwig and I haven't forgotten them," She defended. "I don't want to draw suspicion to myself. I'm sure that you know that before I can move around freely I need people to trust me." Amelia glanced at the clock then groaned. "He'll be here any moment. I'll talk to you about this later, alright," Ivan scowled at her before making his way out the door. Once he was gone Amelia sighed and muttered; "I really don't understand why he keeps on dropping in randomly. All he does is act like an ass then leaves." She then walked over to her couch and waited for Ludwig.
A few minutes later there her spirits were instantly lifted when there was a knock on the door. With a huge grin on her face she rushed over to the door and opened it. Ludwig was standing there in his familiar black and silver uniform. "Good evening," He grinned. "You look beautiful." He added eyeing her dress. "I knew you would look great in blue."
Amelia blushed slightly and tucked her hair behind her ear. "Thank you and you look quite handsome, as always." Ludwig stepped aside and held out his arm. Looping her arm with his Amelia quickly closed the door and they both headed out to the awaiting car.
-o-
The ball was as grand as the previous one but it seems that there were more people attending. Arm in arm they made their way towards the front door where the guards were asking for invitations. Just one glance at Ludwig and the guards immediately stepped aside and let them through. Without sparing them a glance Ludwig escorted Amelia past the guards and into the ball room. The building was different from the last location. It was larger and more decorated like as if they were trying to show off more to the public. There were gold and silver decorations on the tables around the hall and hanging from the wall. A red banner with the familiar swastika hung at one end of the hall overlooking the party goers.
"Tonight ball is to celebrate our latest victories," Amelia looked up at Ludwig who was staring at the banner as he spoke. "That's why it is far more grand than the last ball," He looked at her and smiled. "Shall we dance?"
Amelia returned his smile. "I would love too." He escorted her out onto the dance floor and pulled her closer. The first song to play was a waltz. As they danced they talked about whatever came to mind. Eventually a thought that she has been trying to ignore all night forced its way into her head: He's a Nazi. Amelia inwardly groaned. She didn't want to think about that. For the first time she didn't want to focus on her job or the war. All she wanted was to dance her heart away with Ludwig. She smiled as another thought occurred to her; I've fallen for him.
"-a break." Ludwig's voice interrupted her thoughts.
"I'm sorry," she apologized. "What was that?"
"I was wondering if you would like to take a break," He explained. "We have been dancing for a while now."
Amelia nodded. "Sure." As they made their way off the dance floor she couldn't help but notice how people stared at Ludwig as he passed with a mix of fear and awe in their eyes.
"Ignore them," Ludwig whispered. "They won't stop staring anytime soon. It's best to just pretend that they are not there" Amelia nodded but she couldn't resist glancing back at the crowd once and a while. They stopped at one of the tables and when Amelia sat down Ludwig left to grab both of them a drink. She watched as he disappeared into the crowd with a smile on her face.
The ball was filled with people and it seems that while they were dancing the last of the guest arrived. Generals, politicians, the upper class, only those with power and money were invited which made Amelia feel a bit out of place. She glanced through the crowd and found Ludwig once more. It looks like on his way to get some drinks he was cornered by some of the generals. The look of annoyance was plain on his face as they talked to him. It must be hard for Ludwig to get some time alone.
It was so suddenly that Amelia didn't even have time to register it. A sudden shockwave hit her side and threw her off her chair. The only thing she could hear was a high pitch ringing in her ears and when her eyesight was blurry. As everything came back into focus she saw people screaming and running towards the door in panic. Glancing over her shoulder she saw a scorched hole in the wall where the explosion happened.
"Ludwig," She whispered. Amelia glanced around praying that she could catch a glimpse of her date. He was no where to be found. Cursing under her breath she tried to stand up only to have a sharp pain shoot up her leg. Amelia looked down and realized that not only her dress is ruined but she had a huge gash in her left leg. She vaguely wondered where her left shoe went when she noticed that a group of men wearing body armor and guns were making there way through the hole and targeting the party guests. "Damn. Where is my gun when I need it."
Ignoring the pain in her leg she forced herself to stand and quickly headed towards the closest door she could find, which was a pair of double doors that led towards the kitchen. Just as she reached the door she heard gunfire. The guards have finally rushed in to suppress the intruders. "Better late than never, I suppose." She muttered and headed into the kitchen. The kitchen was deserted. The staff must have ran away the moment the explosion went off. Once the door closed she leaned against the wall and took a closer look at her leg. The gash was deep and bleeding quite a bit. Starting to feel it go numb from the pain she limped over to the sink to wash it off. Once the wound was clean she tore off a piece of her dress and used it to bandage it.
Bullets started spraying through the doors and shattering plates and cooking utensils. "Maybe it's time to make an exit." She muttered. Walking as best she could she went over to the exit that led out into the back of the building. "Who are these guys anyways?" She wondered.
Click. The sound of a gun being loaded reached her ears. Quickly she turned around to find one of the attackers aiming at her. "Don't move!" He shouted in french. Before Amelia could reply and tell him that she isn't a Nazi he started shouting again. "I saw you with the general! What do you know about Omega?!"
"Omega? I don't know I'm-." The man fired a bullet into the wall above her head.
"DON'T LIE TO ME," Lifting up his gun he smashed the end of it into the side of her head. Amelia fell backwards and cursed under her breath as the back of her head smashed into the wall. "TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW!"
"I... I... I don't" she stuttered as her vision started to fade. Amelia could feel the blood running down her neck from where she smashed her head.
"You're useless." The man hissed and he raised his gun to shoot her.
"...Asshole..." whispered Amelia as she stared down the barrel of his gun. Everything was fading away into darkness and just when her vision faded she suddenly heard a thud followed by the sounds of a struggle. She couldn't see who but someone just took down her attacker and by the sound of it was choking him to death. Soon there was silence and the last thing she could sense before she past out was that someone had picked her up bridal style and was carrying her away.
