Sonic the Hedgehog had defeated Doctor Robotnik a second time. Once in Splash Hill and another in Casino Street. If this were a mere scuffle, the situation would be over almost immediately. That was clearly not the case between the two residents of the planet Mobius. After all, this was a battle that has lasted for years. It could be considered a war. Albeit a quiet one as opposed to a full scale war.

As his back was in close company with the metal ground of Casino Street, Sonic wondered if Robotnik would ever let up on his attempts at world domination. The heroic side of him wanted it to end as soon as possible while the rest of him wanted this never ending battle to continue just so he could have something fun to do. He didn't want Robotnik to destroy civilians' homes, but he wanted to keep foiling his evil deeds.

The blue hedgehog was conflicted. However, after some more minutes of thinking about the future and failing to remember what he was once told by someone who resembled an older version of him, Sonic got up. He checked his surroundings and found a beige coloured ruin-like area just beyond where Casino Street ended.

"That's gotta be that Lost Labyrinth place...no doubt 'Buttnik's there," Sonic thought as he gazed upon the seemingly small locale. "Guess he's waiting for me inside, all done with his prep. Better not disappoint him!" He smiled at that last internal remark.

With his sights set on Lost Labyrinth, Sonic zoomed over, leaving Casino Street behind.

Luster the Cat: Season 1 Opening 1 (Haruka Kanata - Naruto, English) -

Let's step on the gas and never stop, I will never, ever lose my sight

We'll all go through the night!

I'll keep moving until the end and I won't care about the time we'll spend

We'll whittle days away...

If you open your heart

Just a little...

And bring your friends closer

Your feelings

Must get them or it's over

Yeeeaaah!

So let's hurry up!

We'll let it all out!

Even if my legs shake

I know they can still take

Me even closer to you!

But if you're not there

Can find you nowhere

I won't have time to cry

I'll never cease to try...

To find your way!

I'm going far away…

In mere seconds, Sonic arrived within Lost Labyrinth. He quickly noticed that it was everything he expected it to be - a near clone of Labyrinth Zone from South Island. Though, it was much darker. Sonic could still see where he was going but did not know what the walls looked like.

But it did not matter much to him. He simply followed the path laid out before him.

Sonic was soon damaged by some Badniks; Burrobots. During his first adventure on South Island, he overheard the doctor mention the machine's name. The hedgehog despised these ones because they always caught him off guard. After he took out the one that surprised him, he vowed to not let this happen with the next Burrobot.

Continuing upon his path, Sonic discovered he had to reacquaint himself with water. Luckily this was not as much of an issue as Labyrinth Zone's water because now Sonic wielded techniques that allowed him to get out of water sections easily. The Spin Dash and Homing Attack proved useful here.

Praying that it would not play a big role in Lost Labyrinth's design, he was shot up to a higher up platform via two springs where he could then run further into the stage. A large pit was sighted right in the middle of the path. Making use of his momentum, Sonic jumped over the pit while narrowly evading a perfectly round bronze boulder. No single part of it was made of rock. Likely a trap from Robotnik. More of these appeared throughout his constantly forward-facing path but they were not a significant obstacle.

A combination of springs and a curved wall led him to diagonal line of Bubbles. Whilst he was running down a slope, two boulders dropped down from somewhere and began rolling down behind him, both with the desire to end his adventure. Luckily a spring that launched him over to a group of platforms prevented any of this from happening.

Going up these platforms brought Sonic to a boulder that was upon what seemed to be a rail. Noticing that there was no other way around the massive and therefore deadly pit, he figured going on the boulder would work. It did. All he had to do was to keep himself balanced on the bronze boulder as it moved across its set path. Lost Labyrinth had plenty more of these in store but first, Sonic had to dodge several potentially vicious boulders.

Never did he let himself be beaten by these inanimate objects. An on rails boulder riding section appeared later on which Sonic cleared with ease. There was another right after it which also was not very difficult.

Lost Labyrinth Act 2

As Sonic ventured deeper into the zone, his vision was severely compromised. Darkness flooded the labyrinth like a swarm of flies to an attractive light. On the flip side, a lit torch was on the ground, almost as if somebody was toying with him. Sonic picked up the torch immediately. It provided a good feel for where he was going though he realised he needed to be careful as he could only see a short distance around himself. Sonic kept the torch.

He was also able to light empty torches on the wall, allowing him to see a bit more. More Springs, slopes and curved walls pushed the Hedgehog through more of the zone but eventually he came across a box with explosives inside. Sonic knew what he had to do. Wiring was found within in seconds and Sonic touched the end of it with his torch's flame. This led to the box being blown up, letting the Mobian advance. More of these appeared later on.

Several platforms, Springs and Bubbles later, the blue blur found two more explosive boxes. The first one's explosion caused the other to do the same. A spring at the end of a small slope launched Sonic to a minecart that was on a track in which the rails were detached at certain parts meaning he had to jump to get across those sections. Such an obstacle was not difficult to get through but it was fun, at least to Sonic.

Lost Labyrinth still had plenty of tricks up its sleeve. Springs, curved walls, speed boosters and exploding boxes filled up Sonic's path, creating complex puzzles that the Mobian managed to get through without too much trouble. One such puzzle involved walls along with wall torches. Sonic had to light them up in a certain order and doing so made two walls come out of the ground, providing access to a higher spot. It took Sonic a long few minutes to figure out the solution.

On the long path that followed, Burrobots tried to surprise Sonic once again but this failed due to Sonic seeing their drills poke up from ground, revealing their location. He quickly stepped forward. This caused the Burrobots to ascend prematurely, where Sonic then easily dispatched them with a Spin Dash. Several exploding boxes and minecart rides were all that was in Sonic's way towards the end of the section.

Lost Labyrinth Act 3

After some time, the darkness lifted. Lost Labyrinth returned to its brighter self. Since the torch was not needed at this point, Sonic threw it away before proceeding onward. This third section brought back an old fear of his: water. No way around it. With a deep breath, the speedy hero jumped straight into the liquid and onto a platform that dived straight down.

Underwater Badniks were indeed present, such as Orbinauts and Jaws. Sonic dispatched them as easily as the Bubbles. Orbinauts were always an annoyance for him. Good thing that the Homing Attack proved to be an effective counter for their spiked balls.

The path he was taking ended up going outside of the water for a short while. These few moments allowed Sonic to catch his breath before he entered the deep once again. Whilst Sonic was running around down there, he found his way out by blasting through a square stone that was in a small room. Another one appeared later as Sonic had to traverse through more water.

After the second tiny room, Sonic reached a downward crossroad with both sides having water running down them. He took the right side and via jumping, the blue hedgehog landed on a long platform with a switch at the very end. Curious, Sonic pressed the switch and went back on the water slope. He discovered that a wall had opened up as a result. The path then straightened out for a second or so. At the end was the familiar sight of Robotnik in his Egg Mobile.

"Why, hello there, Sonic! Nice to see that you're here," the scientist welcomed with a fake happiness.

"Robotnik, where's your mech? You're supposed to have one. What, don't tell me you're gonna reuse that same trick from Labyrinth Zone?" scoffed Sonic, a grin on his face.

Soon realising that his arch nemesis was completely correct, Robotnik said nothing further. He merely started hovering upwards which revealed a tall upwards path with lots of Badniks and other deadly obstacles. Sonic was unimpressed, his grin fading and eyes narrowing. Sighing, the blue hedgehog followed after his enemy.

There were hazards aplenty. A mix of all the Badniks he encountered in the zone along with sharp metal poles that stung rather horribly. Sonic needed to use a great ounce of his agility to get through here. Much alike the same thing from Labyrinth Zone, it soon ended with a straight line into a large open room.

"Now for the REAL battle!" Robotnik announced. He pressed a button on the Egg Mobile's dashboard, causing two walls to emerge from the ground. This severely decreased the size of the room and made it so nobody could get in or out.

Robotnik stayed in the air, just out of a Spin Jump's reach. Sonic was not sure how he could reach his opponent. Homing Attack would not do sufficient damage to the Egg Mobile's underside while a Spin Dash into a Spin Jump would not reach. It seemed he was out of options until walls emerged from two sides of the enclosed room, allowing Sonic to use them as platforms so he could strike the cockpit.

This was Sonic's strategy for the rest of the fight. Merely wait until Robotnik tried to use the walls to crush him, then use said walls to attack. Robotnik never tried anything else. Thus, the fight was Sonic's after several hits.

"Agh! I lost again?" the evil scientist grunted, slamming a fist onto the dashboard. "You'll have to lose one of these battles sometime, Sonic! I've got to get back to Mad Gear…"

He reopened the room and escaped from Lost Labyrinth, leaving Sonic inside.

"That makes three wins for me, oh yeah!" Sonic celebrated to himself. "Did ol' Robonick say something about a Mad Gear? Probably he's headed there next. Looks like I know where I'm going!"

Sonic followed Robotnik's path, finding the exit to Lost Labyrinth in no time at all. After a brief scan of his surroundings, a green and mechanical looking environment was very close. Sonic assumed this was Mad Gear and immediately set his sights on it. He was unaware that he was actually heading into Robotnik's base of operations.
