TORI'S POV

I'm standing at my locker just before my last class of the day exchanging my books. I have study hall this period so I grab the books that I will need for tonight's homework. Just as I am shutting my locker Andre walks over to me. "Hola, muchacha!"

I smile and adjust the strap of my bag as we begin our walk to study hall. "Hey, Andre, what's up?"

Andre just shrugs, "Not much. I had this hot date over the weekend…" I automatically tune out Andre's description of his date only humming and nodding at the appropriate moments. I love Andre but like and love sick teenage girl my mind was immediately overrun by thoughts of a certain raven-haired goddess.

Almost as if my thoughts summoned her I see her come around the corner from the other end of the hall. A small smile breaks out onto my face as I take in her appearance. She is wearing a grey, long sleeved, Angel's t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up part of her arm. Although it is a t-shirt it is neither too loose nor too tight. It seems to have found the perfect compromise of accentuating some of her gorgeous curves while hiding others making you wonder what she has hidden under that shirt.

In addition to her t-shirt she has on a pair of black skinny jeans that are tucked into a pair of black shin-high combat boots. Perched on top of her head and sort of holding her hair back is the pair of Ray Ban Aviators she always wears.

I can't help but think that she looks absolutely perfect. Her confidence practically emanates off of her as she strides down the hall and people move out of her way. I can tell she relishes in the power she has as her signature smirk adorns her face.

The entire moment comes crashing down when Beck seemingly comes out of nowhere and throws his arm around her shoulders pulling her close to him.

My jealousy surges through me like a raging bull.

I was so lost in my thoughts about Jade that I hadn't even realized that Andre and I reached our study hall. As he holds the door open for me I step in the room and automatically head towards the back corner near the window where my small main group of friends always sits with each other. Robbie and Cat are already sitting in their seats away from the window, which is understandable as it is pretty chilly.

Since I have on a warm jacket I automatically sit next to the window in the second to last row while Andre takes the seat to my right. Andre seems to either have noticed I was not listening or just got distracted because he finally stopped talking and is now texting someone on his phone a light smile on his face. I can only assume that he is texting the girl he was telling me about.

Involuntarily my mind jumps to Jade. Right on cue Jade and Beck walk into the classroom. Jade sits in the seat behind me and Beck takes the seat behind Andre and next to Jade.

Jealousy rips through me again as I see her and Beck kiss as they sit down. They do not look like they plan on stopping anytime soon so I stop torturing myself and turn back around. I try to distract myself from thoughts of her and what she and her boyfriend are doing right behind me by doing my math homework.

A couple minutes after the bell rings a folded paper triangle falls onto my desk. On both of the flat sides of the triangle the words "OPEN ME" are written in familiar handwriting.

I follow the instructions and unfold the paper triangle to find another note written on the first line of the notebook paper on the other side. I flip paper over and read the note:

Do you need to stay after school for anything? –Jade

Remembering the makeup history test I have to take I frown. I groan aloud earning a few questioning glances from other students and the teacher. I just give them an apologetic smile and they return their attention to whatever it is they're doing.

OMG, yes, I forgot I have to take a makeup history test I missed because of last week's assembly. I am so sorry. I will just walk home. –Tori

I finish writing my response and act like I am stretching to drop the note back on Jade's desk. Once I hear the paper drop onto her desk I stop stretching. After doing a couple problems I decide that it would be better if I used this time to study for my test after school so I put away my math homework and pull out my history books.

Before I can finish getting my history notes and textbook out completely the note, this time folded as an airplane, floats onto my desk. I momentarily stop freaking out over this test that I haven't studied for and smile at Jade's antics. I open the note and read it.

Vega, you live too far to walk home. I will stay after school and wait for you. Btw, smooth delivery. :) -Jade

The butterflies in my stomach are going crazy as I read the note. It sounds like she actually cares. Jade did a lot for me this past weekend and I know that she is being sincere; however, a small part of me still doubts that she really cares about me.

I won't even start the test 'til 3:45 b/c my teacher has a faculty meeting. Plus, I suck at history and haven't studied so it will probably take me a while. I can't ask you to wait that long for me. Btw, nice plane and triangle? I'm not sure what the first thing was. –Tori

After writing my response I fold the paper up again. I walk to the pencil sharpener in the back of the room and on my way over I drop the paper into Jade's lap. It is only when I get to the pencil sharpener that I remember that I only use mechanical pencils and pens for a reason. I fake it anyhow and while I am standing over there I just stare at Jade.

I watch as she runs her hand through her long, black mane which just falls down her back gently and in place. I study her hands as they expertly unfold the note we've been using to communicate. I faintly notice the way my heartbeat picks up as she gets closer to opening it. I know it doesn't say anything extremely important but I am always seeking her approval.

I finally let out a breath I didn't consciously realize I was holding until she smiled very lightly at something I wrote. Seeing the smallest bit of happiness on her face and knowing I'm the cause of it makes me smile in turn.

The whole moment is basically ruined by Beck when he leans over and taps her shoulder. Her small smile drops and she rolls her eyes when he motions for her to check her phone. She sets her pen down and pulls out her phone and types a reply.

A couple seconds later and Beck's phone quietly vibrates. I can hear the huff of what sounds like disappointment that he lets out from where I am standing. It must not be that serious because I hear him whisper a reluctant, "okay" before he turns back to his work.

Just then the teacher shouts from the front of the room, "Tori, if you sharpen your pencil anymore I will have to report you to the principal for making a weapon in class." Thanks to the teacher's warning all eyes are on me and I can feel my face trying to hide behind the blush that is quickly covering my face.

"Okay, sorry" is all I say and people divert their attention elsewhere. When I sit back down in my seat I have try to focus again on my studying. God knows I need it. Before I can get too comfortable I hear Jade shift in her seat. I sense her body getting closer to me. My suspicions are confirmed when she leans in near my ear and whispers, "I didn't realize you needed to sharpen mechanical pencils, Vega."

A shiver runs down my back and I blush from how close she is. She doesn't give me an opportunity to respond as she immediately sits back in her chair. But before she sits back completely she drops an origami swan over my shoulder and into my lap.

I pick up the intricately folded piece of paper and examine it. It looks like its creator, flawless. Every corner is folded neatly and the resulting product is beautiful, even if it is just a piece of paper. How the hell does she do this?

I can barely fold a decent paper plane. Let alone fold different things out of the same piece of paper, despite the creases. I am removed from inner musings as Jade leans forward again, though not as close, and says, "I think what is written on the inside of the note is more interesting than the cute little swan, Vega." I practically hear her smirk in her tone.

I carefully unfold the paper swan and read her message.

YOU ARE NOT WALKING HOME. Bottom line. End of discussion. If necessary, I will just come back after your test. The Tori Vega isn't the perfect little princess everyone thinks she is? What history class are you in and who is your teacher?

P.S.- it was not a triangle it was a paper football. DUH –Jade

This message causes me to have mixed emotions. Elation is the only way to describe my feelings knowing that she seems so concerned for my safety and my grade. Maybe, I really can trust her. Maybe we really are friends.

Maybe, this is some cruel joke. Her comment about me being perfect stings a little. If only she knew my dirty, little secret. Should I tell her? If I do how will she react?

We will never know if you don't tell her.

I do not let my inner musings get too deep and instead I just respond to her message and pass the note back.

Well, sorry for not knowing what a paper football is… I guess I will call you after the test is over. No, unfortunately, 'the Tori Vega' is not perfect. I think my parents have made that painfully clear. I take AP Modern European History with Mr. Jacobs –Tori

That really is not okay. How do you not know what a paper football is? Nobody is perfect, Vega, so don't sweat it. I can help you study if you want. I took that class last year and I passed. ;) –Jade

I know that Jade is intelligent so I am definitely not surprised that she took such an advanced course. What does catch me off guard is the fact that Jade is willingly offering to help me. I would love the opportunity to spend some more one-on-one time with Jade but I am hesitant. Jade isn't exactly the type of person to jump at doing nice things for people, especially me. This is why I decide to respond in a way that still gives her an out if she wants it.

How exactly did you pass? Maybe you could show me how to play paper football sometime but I really need to study right now. I really need all the time I have. –Tori

Jade's response is almost immediate.

I have my ways, Vega. ;) I can show you how to play paper football. But for right now, come to the table in the back of the class with me. -Jade

Jade doesn't give me the chance to even reply to her note before I hear her shuffling. When I turn around slightly she is packing up her work. She glances at me and in a quiet but firm voice says, "Hurry up, Vega, you're wasting our time."

I turn back in my seat and begin packing my notes into my textbook. I zip up my backpack and sit up to make sure I have everything in my binder when I see Beck grab Jade's wrist out of my peripheral vision. I can barely make out him ask her, "Where are you going?"

Her response sounds annoyed and like she is just brushing him off, "Nowhere." He seems a little confused but let's go of her wrist anyhow and she moves to the back of the room. What is going on with them? Why am I so okay with watching them fall?

Again, my thoughts are cut short as a balled up piece of paper hits the back of my head. I turn around and send a weak glare at Jade and she mouths, "Hurry up." I roll my eyes and turn back around, not missing the questioning look I was receiving from Andre and Beck. I pick up my bag and tuck my textbook and binder under my arm as I walk to the back table.

Jade has cleared a spot for us to work and the two chairs together for us to sit next to each other. "You didn't have to throw something at me."

"You didn't have to get lost in la la land." Jade smirks and I know that she only partially did that to get my attention but mainly for her own personal enjoyment. I give in knowing it is a futile argument and decide to make use of whatever time I have with her and whatever help she can provide. As soon as I set my books down on the table, Jade slides them in front of her and opens my textbook and reads over my notes. "Ah, the Renaissance and the Reformation are both so fascinating" she says sarcastically and pushes the textbook back in front of me. "Review your notes and add on to them, specifically any definitions of bold or italicized words, literary works of the time, important dates, and people."

While she is telling me this I watch her grab my binder and flip to the section with my old tests and quizzes. Oh, no, now she is going to see just how dumb I am. I panic and try to reach for the binder before she can see my scores. Noticing my worry, Jade moves the book out of my reach and swats at my hand. "Relax, Vega, we all have our weak subjects. Believe me when I say that I have seen my fair share of bad grades, especially in science." I feel a little better at her admission. Hey, genius, she is bad at science and you're good at it. Put the puzzle pieces together and you'll be that much closer to her!

Deciding to listen to that little voice in my head I say, "I'm pretty good at science. If you ever need my help let me know." She just nods as she looks over one of my mid-chapter quizzes for this section and I return to my notes.

Ten minutes later Jade has gone over my quizzes and I have finished adding to my notes. I am reviewing them and committing them to memory when she leans over my shoulder and says, "That looks much better. One thing about Jacobs is that he really uses the textbook to make the questions on his tests and quizzes. He loves asking about the specifics that are found in the book like definitions, people, and dates. The literary works are typically extra credit but he also has a couple questions about them which are worth more points than the others and can really hurt you if you don't know them."

This is the first major test in this class and I had never noticed that stuff before. "I never noticed that. What were you doing with my quizzes?"

Jade just shrugs and smirks, "I made a quiz for you. First, you have to review the material a bit more." She turns her chair to face me and I do the same, curious as to where she is taking this. "Teach me."

I am completely confused as to what she is talking about. "What? Teach you what?"

Rolling her eyes and groaning a little she says, "Teach me about the Renaissance and the Reformation."

"How is this supposed to help me?"

"One of the best ways to study and to be sure that you understand the material is to teach someone else what you. This will show you whether you know the information because you were reading it or if you truly understand it. So start educating me and I will correct you and ask questions as we go." As she is talking I watch her pick up my notes and close my textbook. I also watch her pick up my quizzes and set them in her lap to reference for this exercise.

With a sigh I close my eyes and start telling her about how the Renaissance started, what it was about, and how it ended in as much detail as I can. I do the same for the Reformation.

About twenty five minutes later I have told her everything I can and answered every question she threw at me. She had to correct me a lot less than I thought but still too often for me to be confident in passing this test. Sensing my concern, Jade pulls out a sheet of notebook paper and gives it to me. I look at her and the paper curiously but before I shape my mouth to ask my question she answers it, "This is a quiz, Vega. There are questions that you missed on your previous quizzes as well as some new ones that I made up while you were teaching me. This will help to determine if you have learned anything since you took the quizzes and what you still need to study."

I must admit that is pretty smart and really helpful. The fact that Jade West is being so helpful is still weird and makes me a bit hesitant. Still, I need all the help I can get so I just thank her and start the quiz.

About ten minutes later I finish and give it to Jade. I watch her intently as she grades my "quiz." I my concerns about how well I did on the back burner as I just observe her in all her glory. I watch as she has one arm on the table that is propping her up as she slightly leans over the table. I follow the motions of the pencil she is twirling in her right hand when she isn't writing on my paper. Subconsciously, I count how many times she licks her lips before lightly biting her bottom one again. "Take a picture, Vega, it will last longer." I blush at being caught but don't really stop.

It only takes her a couple minutes and when she is done we go over it together and I answer every question again verbally. After discussing the ones I got wrong in more detail we go back me studying my notes for about ten minutes and then teaching her what else I have learned about the Renaissance and Reformation since the quiz. We worked until the final bell of the day cut us off.

I stand up and stretch saying, "Thank you so much, Jade. I can't believe that it is actually starting to make sense!" Jade stands up and stretches and throws her bag on her shoulder.

We walk into the hall before the rest of our friends and I start walking in the direction of the library to study more but before I do I look to Jade and say, "Thank you so much for everything. I will call you after my test, promise."

Jade frowns and walks closer to me as more people start trying to come out of the class. "Vega, where are you going?"

I look at her confused, "To go study, I still have a lot of work."

The raven-haired girl rolls her eyes and runs one hand through her hair, "Trust me, I know that-"

"Hey-"

"but you need to let the information sink in a little by doing something else, relaxing a little."

"Okay, I'm going to go relax in the library a little."

"No, you aren't. Stick out your wrist" I do and Jade drags me down the hallway towards the front exit.

Just as we are about to go outside the others spot us and Andre speaks up, "Hey, Tori, Jade, where are you guys goin'?"

Jade stops and says, "For a walk. No, you guys can't come." Everyone stops and stares at Jade, not because she just snapped at them but because she basically just said she wanted to be alone with me. If my heart beats any faster it is going to speed away. All of our attention is them diverted to Cat when we hear her sniffle. Jade's eyes immediately soften, "Cat, you can come but no guys we need to have some girl talk."

Since Jade decided to let Cat come Robbie decided to push the subject a bit more, "Cool, can I come too? I can participate in girl talk."

Before anyone else could respond Rex pipes up saying, "That's because you are a girl, fool."
"Rex," Robbie whines, which isn't actually helping his case.

"Although I agree with the puppet," Jade glares at Robbie, warning him not to interrupt her, "You can't come. We need girl time. Follow us and I will make sure that every one of you qualifies to participate in our next girl time outing with my dullest pair of scissors." When she finishes, Jade gives each of them, even Beck, a pointed look daring them to try to follow.

Beck sighs in defeat. Jade, Cat, and I turn and walk away. We walk one block away and go into a coffee shop. Once we each have a beverage of some sort, we head back to school. The entire time Jade and I simply listen to Cat tell us about 'some guy' she met. We both know that she is talking about Robbie we just don't know why she won't give him a chance.

As we make it to the gate of the school Jade seems to have gotten aggravated by Cat's confusing actions towards the curly-haired ventriloquist as she finally says, "Kitty, why don't you just go out with Robbie?"

Cat sighs and says, "Because I'm afraid."

Though Cat is easily scared, Jade and I are both still confused by her response. I voice my concerns by saying, "What are you afraid of?"

Getting quieter Cat mumbles, "That he won't like me because he is super smart and I'm not."

What throws me off more than Cat's response is the way Jade throws her arm over her shoulder and pulls her in. I know they have been friends for a while but Jade has never been one for public displays of affection except for Beck. Honestly, I am kind of jealous that Jade so easily disregards that for Cat. I stop the half glare I was giving Cat when Jade starts talking, "Cat, you are very smart. You're one of the most intelligent people I know and if Robbie can't see that then he is not worth it."

I am starting to see this comforting side of Jade it is weird but also it is quite refreshing. I couldn't have said it better myself, so I just make some form of agreeing noise as we head into the building.

Cat seems to perk up, I cannot tell if it is because she knows we are right or because Robbie is sitting on the steps waiting on her like a lost puppy. Hopefully both but I don't have the time to ask before he is attached to her hip again as they walk in a different direction.

I just smile and shake my head and Jade snorts, "pathetic." Without actually communicating to each other, we both start walking towards the library.

I playfully, and a little flirtatiously, smack her arm and say, "That's not nice, Jade. It is not pathetic, I think it's cute."

Jade just rolls her eyes and mutters, "Of course you do."

Jade pulls open one of the double doors and holds it open for me. I try not to read into her kindness too much. "What's that supposed to mean?" I say in my best imitation of Cat.

Jade chuckles and says, "Just that it makes sense that you would find Robbie's condition cute." She says the last word as if it is some filthy disease. I am getting ready to sit down at a table when Jade grabs my arm and says, "Follow me." I do it without thinking twice and we end up in one of the private study rooms. The thought of being even more isolated with Jade causes some of the impure thoughts I have had about Jade to flash across my mind. It would not be the first time I fantasized or dreamt about Jade ravishing me in a secluded part in the library.

Just thinking about it causes me to blush. I try to deter my thoughts by going back to Cat and Robbie, "What do you mean 'Robbie's condition'? He isn't sick." I start pulling out my books while Jade pulls out her pen only to stuff it behind her ear and sit in the bean bag all the while never spilling a drop of her coffee that we probably aren't supposed to be drinking in here.

Jade's face is covered in that infamous smirk of hers as she says, "Sure he is. He is pussy whipped" while make the whipping motion and winking. I laugh at her play on words.

Jade just takes a sip of her coffee as I get ready to go over my notes again before Jade quizzes me or something. I don't get the chance to look at them before Jade snatches them from my hand. "Hang on, Vega. Let's do a little review to see what you remember so we know where to start off." I wonder if this is what Jade does to study. She is so intelligent and makes all of her academic success, except Science, come so easy to her that I never really thought she studied for anything.

I brushed those thoughts aside as I had to prepare for my test that was in about forty-five minutes and I had Jade West all to myself. We worked with the same routine we used in class and by 3:42 pm I found that I understood a lot more than I did before. I even, dare I say, felt like I might get at least a B- on this test.

Since I only had three minutes until I was supposed to meet Mr. Jacobs, we decided to pack up and head over to his room. The closer we got to his class the more nervous I became and the more of my confidence seemed to diminish.

Just as I was about to walk into the classroom Jade stopped me to look at her. She put her hands on my shoulders and began to massage them. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Partially trying to sooth my worries but mainly trying to make sure she doesn't see the blush that wants to claim my face as home. I know she probably wouldn't think much of it but I don't know how should would handle me being gay, let alone me having a crush on her. Too be honest, I just got her as a friend, I'm not ready to risk losing her.

Her mere touch calmed me down and the circle paths her thumbs are making helps quite a bit as well. When I finally open my eyes all my worries, doubts, and fears seem to be washed away as I lose myself in the prettiest eyes I have ever seen. I almost don't hear what she says because I am so lost in her eyes, "Vega, calm down. You are going to be fine. If you choke you can always play a game with him to pass."

I am confused beyond belief as to what she is talking about. "What game?"

A mischievous smile spreads over her face when she says, "Hello titty!" She takes time to look at my chest and I blush. She looks as if she is considering something while staring at my chest. Then, her eyes snap up to meet mine again and she says, "Although, in your case you may need to also play hello kitty," adding a wiggle of her eyebrows and a suggestive wink at the end. I can't help but laugh at her suggestions and facial expressions. She just chuckles at me and before I can protest she pushes me into the room.

A huge smile is still on my face and I am still laughing a little at Jade's suggestion when I notice Mr. Jacobs at his desk. Feeling much better than a couple of minutes ago I walk over to him and say, "Mr. Jacobs?" When he looks up at me to indicate I have his attention I continue, "I am ready to take that make-up test."

"Ah, that's right, Miss Vega, you do have a test to take! Are you ready?" He exclaims while pulling out what I assume to be my test materials.

I pull out a pen and pencil and set them on a desk with my bag next to it. "Yes, sir, I think so." I walk back to his desk and take the papers.

"Okay then, there are fifty multiple choice questions, here is the scantron. You also have an essay, here is some lined paper, use a pen for the essay and pencil on the scantron. Good luck!" With that he turns his attention back to his work and I walk to the desk I chose. I sit down and place the essay papers on an empty desk next to me.

While I am taking the multiple choice section I silently thank Jade for suggesting I redo my notes. After about forty five minutes of the multiple choice questions I pick up my pen and begin writing the essay. Another forty-five minutes later and I am done with my essay as well. I read it over and go over my multiple choice sheet again.

Once I am sure I have done the best I could I get up and give the papers to Mr. Jacobs. He looks up and smiles and I am so anxious that I briefly consider playing one of the games Jade suggested for good measure. Thinking about her lightens my mood a little so I thank Jacobs and walk out of the class.

As soon as I step in the hallway I reach for my phone when someone behind me says, "How did it go?"

I am completely shocked when I turn around and find Jade casually leaning against the wall with a curious look on her face. "Jesus, Jade, you scared me!"

She smirks as she pushes off the wall and starts walking, "Good. So, how did it go? Did you take my advice? You needed to play hello kitty, didn't you?" Jade quirks an eyebrow and nudges me gently with her elbow.

I laugh and playfully shove her shoulder back with my own. "I did not! I did briefly consider it though." I say the last part a bit quieter. Jade still heard me if her boisterous laughter is any indication. I blush beet red and try to divert her attention as we head toward the front doors. "I think I did pretty well. Thank you so much for helping me."

The raven-haired goddess's laughter slowly dies down and she just shrugs, "No problem, Vega. I need to stop at my locker to exchange my books really quick." I decide to do the same and head over to my own locker.

A couple seconds later Jade is standing next to typing on her phone with a frown on her face and no books. "Where is your bag?"

Without looking up she says, "In my locker I don't have homework." She finishes typing out a seemingly long message, hits send, and puts her phone in her back pocket.

"How? I have so much homework!" I exclaim curious as to whether she didn't get any, already did it, or just has no intention of doing any. My suspicions are leaning towards the latter of the three.

"I finished while you were taking your test." She replies nonchalantly.

"You finished all over your homework in an hour and a half?" I finish grabbing the books I need and we walk out to the parking lot.

"Yeah, I am ahead in most of my classes since I have a syllabus." We climb into her car, which is one of the few left, and get buckled.

When we are settled in and driving is when I think of something, "How do you have a syllabus, none of my teachers use one."

Jade smirks and I know something is going on, "They don't actually hand out syllabi. I get Robbie to sneak into the school files and pull out my teacher's curriculum notes where they also have the homework laid out by semester. This way I can stay on top of my homework." I just shake my head. Of course Jade would do something underhanded to benefit her academically.

That sounds like a good idea; maybe she could do the same for you.

Before I can fully question the morality of the situation I say, "D-do you think he could, um, do the same for me?"

Jade's smirk widens and she says in her imitation of me, "My, my welcome to the dark side, Sweet Sally!"

"I don't talk like that! Please, seriously, that would give me a lot more free time!" I try to convince her.

"Oh, goody! If you have more free time that means we can hang out more!" I wince slightly at the sarcasm. It did hurt a little as that is exactly what I would do if I had more free time. I guess Jade noticed my slight pout because she sighs and relents, "Ugh, Vega, that should be a penalty flag." Nobody, not even Big Bad Jade West, can resist the Tori Vega pout.

"Don't hate the player, hate the game!" Jade laughs and it is a beautiful sound that I do not hear often enough.

"Vega, please, you don't have game!" Jade teases right back at me. She's right, you don't, otherwise you would have her already.

Nobody asked you! I could get her to like me!

Then do it, idiot!

I feign shock then smirk at her, "I got you to like me." Jade is quiet for a while, seemingly thinking about something. While she is doing that I look out my window just in time to watch us drive by my street. I turn back to Jade confused.

Reading my mind before I can even vocalize my question Jade says, "My mom called while you were taking your test and told me, and I quote, to 'bring home that lovely girl Tori for dinner. I won't take no for an answer.' So, text or call whoever 'cause you'll be home late."

As Jade relays the message her mother gave her I can't help but smile. I pull out my phone to text Trina because I know my parents won't care. My smile only gets bigger when I receive Trina's response.

Trina:

Ooh, n w/ the rents alrdy? Thts gud, if they lke u they will wnt 2 c mre of u…So will she ;)

When I look up again I realize that we have just pulled into Jade's garage. As Jade reaches into the backseat to grab her bag she stops and looks at me. "Wow, I didn't realize you like my family so much that they make you smile like that."

I just laugh at her and get out of the car. "That isn't the only reason why I am smiling so much." Before she asks I continue, "I'm smiling because your parents like me. It seems like you Wests just can't get enough of my charm." I wink at her and head towards the door.

I hear her snort as she walks by me, "Cocky much, Vega?" I just smile at her and follow her inside.

The second I walk inside I am enveloped in warmth that I never would have associated with Jade's home before the previous weekend. Though still slightly surprised, I eagerly welcome the warmth as it is something that has been foreign in my own home for some time now.

The house is very quiet which lets me know that no one is home at the moment and I am curious as to why since it is almost six o'clock. Admittedly, I was really looking forward to seeing Jade's family again, especially her mother. I don't know how exactly, but I am pretty sure that Mrs. West is well aware that I have a crush on her daughter. Even knowing this she seemed to not have a problem with me so maybe there is hope. Maybe she made Jade invite me for a reason. Maybe Mrs. West is rooting for Jade and I to get together and is trying to speed things along. Or, maybe she just feels bad about my home situation, doesn't know anything, and just wanted to be nice.

While I am lost in my thoughts Jade walks over to the refrigerator and starts looking for food. With her head stuck in the fridge she pulls me from my thoughts, "We are going to have dinner in a couple hours so would you like a snack or something until then? We can go hang somewhere, maybe watch a movie, play some video games or something."

I look over at her and try to formulate a response while my eyes are glued to her glorious backside. "Uh, a small snack sounds good, I haven't eaten since lunch. As much as I would love to kick your butt in some video games again I still have homework, remember?" I would love to just chill with Jade sort of like we did on Saturday but I have a lot to do and I would like to get it done before dinner, especially since I don't know what time I will get home.

Jade comes out of the refrigerator with a jar of what looks like red applesauce and a jug of milk. Setting these ingredients down, she makes her way to the pantry and comes back with peanut butter. Jade then grabs four slices of bread, a knife, two plates, and two glasses. "Oh yeah, I forgot that you still have work to do. Do you need absolute silence to do this work? Is there something you need to read or anything like that," she asks while making sandwiches with the peanut butter and applesauce like substance.

"Uh, no, I just have math, science and history. Do you think you could help me with history again?" I ask a little shyly because this whole friendly with Jade West thing is completely new to me.

Jade smiles softly and licks her lips while she puts on the final touches to our sandwiches. "Yeah, of course I can." Jade pours milk into each glass and sets our sandwiches down on the table where I am sitting. Before she actually sits down to eat she goes back and cleans up her mess.

I love applesauce but I have never seen red applesauce, much less on a sandwich with peanut butter. I can't shake the idea of eating something and not knowing what it is so when Jade sits down next to me at the table I ask, "Jade what exactly is this, if you don't mind my asking?"

Jade smirks at me in a bit of an unsettling way, "I was wondering when you were going to ask me. This is apple butter and it is very good, especially on a sandwich with peanut butter. Try it."

I feel better knowing what it is and that I was not completely off with my original guess of it being applesauce of some kind. Under the watchful gaze of Jade I lift the sandwich to my mouth and take a bite. I am pleasantly surprised to find that I really like it, like more than I thought I would. It is like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The only difference is instead of jelly combating the salty, stickiness of peanut butter there is an applesauce like substitute. The apple butter itself is inexplicably good.

I was really lost in my own world for a minute. So much so that I must have been vocalizing my appreciation for the taste because when I open my eyes Jade is smirking at me in an "I told you so" kind of way. She doesn't comment or tease me about it she just continues to eat her sandwich.

As we eat our snacks we make small talk and joke with each other. Jade is telling me a story about something she and Beck did together one time. Naturally, I tune it out. Instead of paying attention to the adorable couple moments they have shared, my mind drifts to thoughts of how everything has changed so quickly.

I absolutely love being able to call Jade my friend, and if we keep on this track we will be good friends in no time. Unfortunately for me, I want so much more than just friends and no matter what my brain says, my heart won't listen. My thoughts continue down the more depressing side of reality like how Jade will never tell other people any cute couple stories about me and her like she is telling me about her and Beck. Like how Jade could decide to not be my friend anymore and stop liking me when she start to see all of the imperfections my parents see. Or how I could lose Jade's friendship, the security of her home and family, or Jade period if I told her I am gay and she isn't okay with it.

I get so deep into my thoughts that I grow quieter as I continue to think. The only time I make a sound is when I am making some sort of automatic agreement. Progressively it gets worse because Jade is very perceptive and it does not take long for her to catch on to my slightly distracted behavior.

Luckily, before she can question me about it Mr. and Mrs. West come in through the garage. Mrs. West's face lights up when she sees me and she comes and gives me a big hug. I am warmed by how much she seems to like me and in the back of my mind I am saddened because my own mother has not hugged me like this in ages. Though I enjoyed it, I was not expecting the hug. "Hey, Tori! How are you dear" Mrs. West softly asks in my ear. I can tell from the tone of her voice that she is asking about more than just the basics.

I subconsciously squeeze her a little tighter and whisper back, "I'm okay, much better thank you." We hug for a few more seconds and then pull away. Mr. West says a brief but friendly "hello" as he and Jade unload the grocery bags. If the pasta and sauce are any indication, someone is going to be making spaghetti and meat balls for dinner.

I chuckle as I watch Jade carry, very protectively, a couple bags of what looks like expensive coffee in from the garage and very carefully sets it in a cabinet towards the back. Either her parents are used to her doing this or they just don't care. I feel bad just standing here watching them do all the work so I ask Mrs. West, "What can I do to help?"

"Nothing, let's go do homework, Vega," Jade cuts in before her mother can acknowledge me. Jade cleans up the mess from our sandwiches and her mother shoots me an encouraging smile as I follow Jade up the steps.

Just before I close Jade's door behind me I hear Mrs. West call up the steps, "Dinner will be ready at eight thirty, girls."

Jade clearly has no intention of responding as she seems to be in deep thought so I politely thank her and close the door. At the sound of the door closing Jade looks at me as if she wants to say something. She opens her mouth, then turns her head and sighs. Then she looks back at me with that panty-wetting smirk on her face and I almost get whiplash from her mood swing. I decide to ask her about what she is thinking about when she answers my unvoiced question, "Wanna play video games until dinner?"

I almost jump at the idea of playing with Jade again, "Yeah," then I remember I have homework to do, "no, I can't, I have homework. That shouldn't stop you from playing." I toss my back pack onto her bed and kick my shoes off before climbing on.

"Oh, come on, Vega. Just play one game with me." Jade cocks her head to the side and smiles at me while waving an X-box controller.

"I can't I have to get this work done, then maybe I can play."

"We can play any game you want," Jade persists.

"How about…Let Tori do her homework?"

Jade groans, "That sounds boring. You have plenty of time to do your work."

"I only have an two and a half hours until dinner. Then I have to go home and I can't any work done with my parents arguing."

"Okay, but you don't have that much work to do and plenty of time." I just shake my head and begin to pull out my science books. I begin working on the science worksheet that I have to complete when Jade says, "Unless you're scared."

"You realize the fact that we have been arguing about this has wasted time where I have neither played with you nor done any work?" I can see she has a response for that as well so I decide to take a different approach. I smirk as best as I can and say, "You know, I never thought I would see the day that Jade West would be begging me to play video games with her." I see her face morph into realization and confusion so I continue, "What can I say? I guess I just have that type of effect on all of the Wests, even the wicked one."

Jade just glares at me and rolls her eyes. I can still see the hint of a small blush. She finally gives in and says, "Fine, do you still want help with history?"

I smile as I just won an argument against Jade West. "Yes, please." I decide to take her up on her offer because I could use her help and should take advantage of the opportunity. And you just want her attention. My intentions are strictly academic.

Thanks to Jade's help with my history homework I was able to finish after a little over an hour. As soon as I was done I challenged Jade to a video game marathon until dinner was ready. I'm still a rookie or noob as they say in MW3, so Jade beat me in pretty much everything but Mario Kart. I can still hold my own against her in that game.

At about 8:25 pm Mrs. West called Jade, Jason and I downstairs to help get silverware and stuff ready. Once we have everything done we all go into the kitchen and make our plates. I begin to follow Jade into the dining room to eat when she instead turns and goes into the den.

Confused I ask, "Uh, Jade, where are you going? Your dining room is that way." I say while pointing over my shoulder.

Jade sets her plate on the coffee table and sits in front of the couch. "Is it really, Vega? Thank God I have you to tell me about the house I grew up in," Jade rolls her eyes. Following her lead, I set my plate on the table next to hers and I sit next to her as the other three Wests come into the den with their plates.

Jason comes in carrying two TV trays while Mr. West balances their plates. Mrs. West smiles at me and sits on one of the ends of the couch behind Jade and I. Jason sets a tray down in front of her and another at the other end of the couch before coming and sitting next to me on the floor with his own food.

By this point I have figured out that we are eating in the den and I am assuming that Jade is looking for something for us to watch while we eat. I am still confused as to why we are doing this, especially since yesterday Mrs. West seemed to be pretty serious about the whole family bonding at dinner tradition.

Jason finally saves me from my confusion and having to ask about what was going on as he says, "On Monday nights from August 'til February we watch Monday night football together during dinner." As if to prove him right, Jade finally lands on a channel that is currently showing the pregame show.

It all makes sense to me now, especially since they are such huge fans of sports. I can already see that Jade and Mr. West are engrossed in the announcers talking about the different teams around the league and tonight's game. Though I have a much better understanding of football now after Saturday's college game, I still really enjoyed Jade's attention when she was explaining the game to me.

After a couple minutes of silently eating my food and halfheartedly watching the announcers I finally figure out a way to grab at least some of Jade's attention. I set my fork down and lean closer to her, "Who's playing." I whisper in her ear with the hopes of playing it off as if I don't want to disturb the others.

Jade doesn't answer me and I think she doesn't hear me at first, but then when the show cuts to a commercial break she looks at me and says, "The Saints are playing the Dolphins."

I understand that those are two teams, but I have no idea what city either of them is from. I nod my head, "This should be a really good game." You know absolutely nothing about either of these teams. For all you know they both suck.

Jade chuckles and says, "It should be interesting. The Saints haven't been doing as well since they got busted for paying their players to injure other players but the Dolphins suck so it shouldn't be too hard for them to pull out a win."

Before I can even think of something to say Jason speaks up, "Yeah, but the Dolphins have a new roster. They even picked up Mike Wallace from the Steelers. He has hands, speed, and could be just what the Dolphins need."

"That's just one player though; he can't win the game by himself. The Saints are going to completely dominate them. Right, Vega?" Jade looks at me for agreement.

I put my hands up in surrender and say, "I know nothing about professional football." They both look like they're ready to turn back to the screen as the announcers are getting ready to come back. "Although, I agree with Jade. Wallace is just one player; the Dolphins are going to need a strong defense to stop the Saints' offense, especially Drew Brees." I spit out something I had heard one of the announcers say during one of the rare moments I was listening.

Jade and Jason both seem shocked, but Jason seemingly gives up and turns his attention back to the screen. I look at Jade who is now smirking at me, "What?"

She shakes her head and says, "I'm rubbing off on you."

I facetiously curl my lip in disgust, "God, I hope not."

"Very funny, Vega" and with that she turns her attention back to the screen.

We all continue like that, occasionally having disputes about who will win. I get most of my proof from what the announcers say or I just agree with Jade. Eventually, the game starts and we are all engrossed in it. Much like Saturday I find myself enjoying myself more since I understand what is happening in the game. A couple minutes into the game and everyone has finished their spaghetti. Jade leans forward to place her plate on the table and when she leans back she stretches her right arm on the couch behind me.

My attention is now split between the game and her arm. I scold myself to remind myself that she is not interested in me or any other girl. I don't even know how she feels about homosexual relationships. I know I want to tell her and I should, even if just for my own piece of mind. But, what if she doesn't accept me? What if she thinks it's gross and taunts me or ignores me? What if she decides to stop being my friend? I just gained her friendship after so long.

With that, I made my decision. I wa-

I'm ripped from my thoughts by Jade giving me a huge hug and kissing the side of my head. "Oh my gosh, Vega, did you see that touchdown?"

I try to rid myself of the bush that I know is on my cheeks, "Uh, no, sorry. Was it good?"

Jade looks at me as if I just asked her what my own name was. "Was it good? No, it was amazing. Brees threw a strike right to the back of the end zone from the twenty yard line just before getting hit. Then Jimmy Graham just snatches it on his tip toes with his left hand. That is going to be in the highlights reel for the rest of the season."

Surprisingly enough I understood everything she just said. I couldn't say the same thing before last Saturday. "That sounds amazing Jade." I turn my head back to the screen just in time to see them play it again and it was a really amazing catch. Somehow, I managed to miss most of the game, being lost in my own thoughts as it is now the fourth quarter with six minutes left.

Like Jade predicted, the Saints crushed the Dolphins and the final score was 38-17. After the game was over I helped Mrs. West with the dishes while Jade and the other two Wests argued about the game and sports in general.

"Are you okay, sweetie?" I turn to find Mrs. West looking at me with a concerned expression.

I try to smile but it just doesn't work. I think about lying to her but she has been so amazing to me that I can't. "No, ma'am, I'm not."

Mrs. West dries her hands off and stands next to me. I don't make eye contact with her because I know that if I do I will most likely break down. Mrs. West seems to pick up on this because she has me put down the plate I was rinsing before she pulls me into a hug. She doesn't even comment on how wet my hands are when I wrap them around her.

"Shh, it's okay, sweetie. Breathe, I'm right here, honey." Her words are soothing and comforting. Since when did this kind of comfort become so foreign to me? Jade has been amazing these last couple of days and Trina has been far more supportive than I could ever ask her to be but my own mother never does this with me anymore. She just looks at me with contempt, as if every hardship every human being has ever suffered from is somehow my fault. Mrs. West pushes me back a little to see my face. "Do you want to talk about it, hun?"

I think about saying no. I think about putting on a fake smile and pretending that everything is okay. As I stare into her kind and caring eyes I know that I can't do either of those things. I sigh, "I'm scared, Mrs. West."

Mrs. West just nods, "Okay, would you like to stay here tonight? I'm sure Jade won't mind sharing her room with you or you could sleep in one of the guest rooms if you'd like."

Yeah, because what I really need right now is to sleep in the same bed as Jade again. "Thanks, Mrs. West, but I should probably go home tonight. I'm actually afraid of Jade."

At this Mrs. West gets a stern look on her face and she looks mad. "Did Jade start tormenting you again? I swear I-"

I laugh a little shocked at how she jumped to defend me and how she sounded like she was getting ready to make Jade pay despite the fact that she is her daughter and not me. "No, actually, Jade has been great these last couple of days. I'm really glad to be able to have her in my life. It's just" I look away contemplating on whether or not I should tell her "I'm afraid to tell her a secret that if she knew she may not like me anymore."

Though I didn't give her the dirty details Mrs. West nods at me like she is in on the secret. It wouldn't surprise me if she did know, she is extremely intelligent. "I understand. Listen," I turn to look at her again, "Jade is tough, she has a lot of walls, and she likes to pick on a person's shortcomings but she is very understanding and accepting. Whether you tell Jade this secret or not is entirely up to you but I think you should give her a chance. You may be surprised."

I smile at her and hug her again and she happily hugs me back. "Please don't tell me you're crushing on my mom, Vega." I turn out Mrs. West's embrace to find Jade smirking at me.

"You caught me, this entire time I've been using you to get to your mom." I stick my tongue out at her like a five year old.

Jade gasps and throws her hand over her heart in mock sadness, "And here I thought that we had a future together. To be honest, I'm not surprised we Wests have a certain charm. But I also thought if you fell for any of us it would be Jason the way he's been flirting with you." I blush really hard at her last comments because they definitely are charming. Especially her with her big blue eyes with speckles of green.

"Guess I never really stood a chance against you guys then." By now Jade is leaning against a counter across from the one her mother and I are leaning against.

She shrugs and rolls her eyes playfully, "No one ever stands a chance. Do you want to go play some more video games?"

I laugh at her, "What you didn't get enough of me beating you before dinner?"

"Actually, I think you cheated. No one beats me without cheating."

"Well, I did and unfortunately for you, you'll have to wait until some other time to get a rematch. I need to get home."

Jade checks her watch and says, "Oh, okay. I need to go get my wallet and keys then I can drive you home." I follow her up to her room and pack my backpack. Jade sits on her bed and watches me. "You sure you don't want to stay the night? I can always call Trina and make up an excuse or something."

I smile at her attempts but shake my head, "Thanks but I don't wanna wear out my welcome. Plus, I don't want to run from my problems."

Jade walks over to where I am and grabs my face making me look at her. She is so close that I can smell the faint hint of the perfume she put on this morning. "That's admirable, Vega, but don't you ever think you could wear out your welcome here." With that she kisses my forehead and hugs me.

First, I'm shocked by her words. Then, I'm blown out of the water by her actions. Finally, I'm touched to know that the Jade West that hates human contact just initiated a hug with me. I don't hesitate to hug her back. We stand like this for a few minutes before I decide that I should let go so I actually make it home without trying to jump her bones. "That really means a lot, Jade." I pick up my backpack and wait for her to lead the way.

"Anytime, Vega" she turns and walks towards her bedroom door, "just don't tell anyone about that. I don't want people to think that it's okay for just anyone to hug me."

We walk down the stairs and into the kitchen.

"Jade, are you trying to tell me that I'm special."

"Oh yeah, you're special alright." I mock offense before I say my "thank you's" and "goodbye's" to the other Wests.

When we get into her car I have an internal battle with myself about whether or not I should confide in her about my sexuality. Ironically enough "Secrets" by One Republic is playing from her playlist. I keep weighing the pros and cons in my head and a couple of times I almost say something. As we near my house the song switches and "Diary" by Alicia Keys comes on. I'm noticing a theme and I'm wondering if she's doing this on purpose.

Soon enough though Jade is pulling into my driveway. She cuts of the lights and the engine and puts the car in park. "Thanks, Jade, for everything." I reach for the door handle.

Jade grabs my wrist and stops, "Wait, Vega, can we talk?" I get back in the car and wait for her to continue, "Uh, I just noticed that you seemed a little reserved tonight. I just wanted to make sure you were okay or that I didn't do anything stupid."

I smile at her concern, "No, you didn't do anything wrong. I just have a lot on my mind right now."

"Oh, good, I mean not that you have a lot on your mind but that I haven't done anything stupid lately." Jade sounds nervous which is really adorable coming from her. I realize in this moment that she is not accustomed to being nice to people on this level and is kind of stumbling in the dark trying to help me. It only makes me appreciate her efforts that much more. "Do you, uh, wanna talk about it? I won't talk, you can just vent or cry or whatever you need to do." She is really trying hard and it shows.

"Thanks, but I don't know if I want to tell anyone right now."

She looks hurt for a minute before she covers it up with her mask indifference. "Oh, okay. I understand how that can be. Just know, if you change your mind I am here and I won't judge." That's actually what I really needed to hear from her.

"Thanks a lot, Jade." I take a chance and lean over her console and kiss her on the cheek before climbing out of her car. Imagine my surprise when she climbs out after me. "Where are you going?"

"I'm walking you to your door." She answers as if it's no big deal or glaringly obvious.

"Okay, then." We walk silently and she stands next to me as I unlock the door.

Just as I get the door open she grabs my wrist and turns me around. She looks over my shoulder as if she's looking for someone then pulls me close to her. My heart is practically beating out of my chest and I have no idea where she plans on taking this. Surprisingly enough she hugs me again and brings her lips to my ear. I revel in the feel of her strong arms wrapped around my midsection. They're strong enough that I feel safe but soft enough that I don't feel like the blonde from that one scene in King Kong. I wrap my own arms around her shoulders and practically moan at the feel of her hot breath on my ear and neck when she starts whispering in my ear. "Are you sure you don't want to spend the night? I can always turn us around and lend you clothes."

I chuckle and take advantage of our position by burying my nose in her neck. "Yes, I'm sure. If I don't go home today I will have to go home some day."

"You can always just run away to our house. My family already loves you and you're growing on me."

I laugh again and pull back a little to look her in the eyes. I temporarily lose my train of thought just by looking into those deep pools of blue. "I may take you up on that another time. For now I have to try and stick it out. Call me when you get home so I know you're safe?"

"Fine, but don't hesitate to call me for anything. And if you decide to change your mind and you want to spend the night I will come get you. Okay?"

I smile at her and nod my head. We're so close that our noses lightly brush when I do and the birds in my stomach are all doing a huge dance number. "Okay, good night, Jade."

"Night, Vega." She kisses my forehead and pulls out of my embrace. I watch her walk to her car, get in, and drive away. I sigh and go inside closing the door behind me.
