All characters are property of CBS, Jeff Davis, Edward Allen Bernero and sadly not mine. I just take them along for the ride. As stated in the summary this is a deeper look into a scene so I took the dialog from the episode.
Special thanks to my dear friend Sarah (1983Sarah) for all her help and encouragement and being a great beta. Thanks to everyone who read and/or reviewed one of my others stories.
Spoilers for "Derailed", Gideon-centric
"It's going on too long. I'm going in," Gideon announced while watching the events that were unfolding in the train's car via the monitors in front of him.
The agent had already been worried since the moment his protégé had entered the railway car, but now that he saw Reid talking to the agitated UnSub, he was getting even more concerned.
So Jason turned around and got out of the surveillance van, leaving Morgan and JJ behind to keep looking at the screens. Taking his gun out of its holster he handed it over to Hotch who, to his credit, didn't say anything.
Agent Moretti did however call after the profiler, "Hey Gideon!"
Rounding the van Jason just ignored it and continued to make his way over to the rail track, seeing several armed members of the Hostage Rescue Team and also its sharp shooters preparing themselves from where they were crouched behind the police cars for cover.
He knew that if they had to storm the train, there most definitely would be casualties. Though not being sure what he would do once he was inside, he was determined to end this before someone else could get hurt - or even killed.
With his gaze fixed on his destination, the senior profiler reached the barricade the police had set up when suddenly a shot rang out from inside the train's car.
Gideon stopped in his tracks immediately and fear turned his stomach into knots at the realization who the gun had been pointing at a moment ago. Unconsciously taking a step back in shock, he steadied himself by putting his left hand on one of the wooden barricades.
It felt like Boston all over again.
Even though he was fighting it, his mind showed him flashes of the incident that happened a year ago. A decision he had made had cost six of his agents their lives when the UnSub of that case, Adrian Bale, had blown up a warehouse Gideon had sent the men in. Jason had underestimated the UnSub that day.
Now it seemed like history was repeating itself. Once again one of his agents was killed by another error of judgment on his side.
And as much as he knew that he would never forget the sight nor would be able to forgive himself, he had to see it for himself; he had to know what happened to Reid.
So he ran over to the train, not caring for his own safety at all anymore, while he kept telling himself like a mantra that he hadn't had any other choice than to go with the plan Spencer had suggested.
Jason couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that was slowly but steady overwhelming him. He had brought the shy and awkward yet brilliant young man into the BAU and had also become his mentor. And now he was responsible for his death.
Reaching the door of the railway-car he grabbed its handle with slightly trembling hands and opened it. Gideon didn't hear anything coming from the inside so he entered cautiously and stopped short at the scene greeting him while the door shut again on its own.
To his immense relief he saw his protégé standing next to one of the seating benches in the middle of the train's car, apparently unharmed, and leaning forward presumably over Bryar as the older agent couldn't see the UnSub anywhere. He noticed a gun in Spencer's right hand which lay on the seat's back, and Jason relaxed a bit realizing that there was no longer any danger for the passengers and his agents.
His gaze shifted to Harry Anderson. The passenger stood further down the aisle in front of the seat he had been occupying earlier, still clasping a gun in his hands that was pointing at the now empty space next to Reid.
And Jason began to understand what had happened in the minute he hadn't been watching on the monitors.
Briefly letting his gaze drift to the left he saw Elle sitting chained to the metal of the bench. She looked relatively unharmed as well and relief was evident on her face.
When Gideon walked forward Spencer turned his head around to him, then to Anderson who now confirmed some of the older profiler's assumptions by saying, "I had to. He was going to kill us." The man seemed totally shaken by what he had just done; beads of sweat were running down his face.
Reid looked down at the unconscious Bryar and checked for a pulse at the arm that was laying on the back of the seat next to his while Jason stepped up to them.
Despite the living image of his colleague right in front of him he still couldn't fully believe that Spencer was alive.
After a quick glance at the floor to gather himself, the senior agent's gaze shifted to the UnSub as well. He saw Reid looking at him for a moment, then back to Bryar.
"We need an ambulance," the young man said in a calm and steady but slightly lower voice, addressing the senior agent and gazing at him briefly again. Jason turned his head toward the windows that were almost completely obscured with blinds, not really seeing anything that was going on outside.
The vivid pictures of his protégé laying dead on the railway-car's floor that his frightened mind had created a few moments ago would without a doubt haunt him in his dreams.
