Chapter 7: Point of No Return

Sora had been walking back and forth for at least five minutes, unable to stand still. His watch kept saying that Cloud and Leon would not arrive for at least ten more minutes, giving him time to wonder what the party would be like. A beautiful moon was spreading its light on the lake, but it was still dark and Sora could barely see the willow tree, where the guys had told him to wait, suspending its trunk and leafy branches all over the water; he couldn't help but think that during the summer it would make a great diving board. The lake wasn't that far from the dormitory, ten minutes at most walking quickly, but considering that students weren't allowed out of it at night during the week, it was no surprise that no living soul was in sight. The wind rustling through the trees made Sora shiver, but not for the cold.

"Hey, So-ora!" Cloud's voice announced that the two boys had finally arrived.

"So you've decided to come in the end." Leon said with a smirk. Sora noted that he was carrying a bag.

"Hey, guys. So... where's the party?" the brunet asked, betraying his impatience to show Riku that he was wrong doubting him. The two boys exchanged a knowing look; now that they were so close to him, Sora noticed that they weren't dressed in a very party-like fashion: both of them were wearing perfectly normal jeans with casual shirts. He didn't know why, but a shiver run down his spine.

"What's the rush?" Leon asked mockingly. "We've got the whole night ahead of us. There's so much time to have fun."

Cloud laughed. "Let's go for a walk, before. It's such a lovely night." he added putting a hand on Sora's shoulder. Now the brunet was really starting to feel uneasy, but he didn't dare to reply. A second later, Cloud let Sora's shoulder go, making the boy wonder, for a moment, if it would be best for him to simply run away and go back to the dormitory: after all he had always been really good at running, there was no way those two could ever reach him. But then again, why do such a thing? That was the last thought that crossed his mind before Cloud grabbed him from behind, efficiently immobilizing him.

"What the..." it was all Sora got out before being blindfolded by the other guy. "Hey-hey-hey! What are you doing? Let me go! Let me go!" The boy started to scream, kicking and wriggling to get free. But Cloud's grasp was too strong for him and after a few minutes of uselessly struggling he gave up.

"Don't worry." Despite being blindfolded, Sora immediately recognized the voice as Leon's. "We don't want to do anything bad to you." He was speaking in his usual calm voice, which irritated Sora even more. "We just want to have some fun, nothing personal."

Those words didn't calm Sora down in the slightest, instead he started to grow increasingly worried when he realized that they were tying his hands behind his back. At least now he knew what was in Leon's bag. He tried to calm himself down by thinking that if Riku was friends with them, they could not be bad guys. Or could they? And what did they want from him, anyway?

"I bet little Sora wants to know what will happen now, right?" Cloud teased guessing his thoughts all the while forcing him to start walking. Sora's heart was pounding so fast that he found it strange the two guys couldn't hear it. "Nothing special, actually: we're simply going to hang you up on the willow tree. Over the lake, of course, so in the case you should fall you won't get hurt... much."

The young boy distinctively heard both of them laughing. "You're... you're not serious, right? You're not really going to..."

But Sora couldn't end his sentence because his face painfully met the trunk of the tree and the realization that Cloud and Leon weren't joking.

"Whoops. Sorry, that was unintentional."

Mere minutes later, after a try as much pathetic as useless from Sora to run away that had concluded with the brunet lying on the ground eating turf and the two boys sitting on his back, Sora was forced on the main branch of the tree, still blindfolded and with his hands tied. He was struggling to keep his balance and not fall into the underlying lake while the two boys kept forcing him, despite his protests, to keep moving towards the end of the branch.

"Stop there!" Leon said, and Sora could feel hands somewhere around his legs.

"Please, don't do this." Sora started to beg. "Listen, whatever I did to you, I'm sorry." He could feel Leon tying his feet from behind, but he didn't even try to resist anymore.

"Oh, don't be mad, little Sora." Cloud's mocking voice made the brunet want to hit him with a brick. "We've already told you that we've got nothing against you, eh, we could even say that we like you, seriously. But you're just too perfect for this kind of prank."

'Prank? PRANK? So, tying someone to a tree during the night is a prank for these two?!' Sora couldn't believe that in this world a single person existed, convoluted enough to organize all of that just for the sake of a laugh. And yet he had found two of them.

"All right, Sora." This time Leon was speaking, serious as usual. "We're done here, see you tomorrow."

"What?!" Sora screamed realizing that the two boys were descending from the tree leaving him there alone. "You mean... you really want to leave me..."

"What? You thought we would untie you after all the troubles we had to go through to get you there?" Leon asked as if he was stating something obvious. "Don't worry, tomorrow morning half of the school will come here to see who has fallen for it this year. And you'll be free."

"Try not to fall asleep, it will be a lot more embarrassing if they find you dangling from your feet. Good night, Sora."

Sora immediately realized what they meant: right now he had his feet tied around the same branch he was sitting on, if he were to fall asleep he would most certainly fall, leaving the feet as the only part of his body stable on the tree. He tried to at least free his hands, but to no avail: Leon surely knew how to do knots. Well, he would not give them the satisfaction of being found hanging from his feet: he had to stay awake all night, no matter what.

A tear wet the blindfold, but it wasn't due to him being helplessly tied to a tree waiting for a humiliating rescue from a bunch of teenagers at dawn. Well, not mostly. Instead his thoughts were once again focused on his silver-haired friend and the fact that Riku most certainly knew what his friends were planning, but had decided to let Sora fend for himself. 'I hate this place. I hate people here. And I hate you, Riku!'

Sora didn't know how much time had passed since Cloud and Leon had left him in that uncomfortable position, but he could have sworn that it was an eternity. Staying awake wasn't a problem, luckily: how could he have wanted to sleep after what had happened? He could even tolerate his nose, which had started to itch the moment they had tied his hands, of course. What Sora really couldn't stand was the boredom. It was incredibly frustrating to be nearly immobilized in that position without being able to do anything. And with his sight gone, the only thing that was left to distract himself with was his hearing. He tried to focus on whatever noise he could hear: the wind, a duck, someone eating chips... 'Wait a second...'

"Hey, is someone there?" Sora cried, hoping that someone was really there and could help him get down. Despite not being able to see, he instinctively turned his head towards the shore, in turn losing the balance needed to stay on the branch. For a moment he felt completely disoriented, then a painful feeling in his legs made him understand that he had fallen from the tree and was now attached only by his legs.

'Great. Just. Great.' "Hello? Is someone there?" Sora asked a second time. No answer came, but the brunet could hear someone getting closer and starting to climb the tree.

'So there is someone. But why doesn't he answer?' For a split second Sora thought that maybe Cloud or Leon may have changed their mind and come back to free him, but he quickly realized that the likeliness that his savior was Santa Claus was far higher than that. And then another thought came to Sora, a pleasant one.

"Is that you... Riku?"

SPLASH!

The moment Sora had uttered that name, the unknown cut the rope that was keeping him suspended over the lake. Luckily he wasn't far from the shore, so the still tied hands didn't prevent him from reaching it.

"That was not very nice, Riku." It had to be Riku, of course. He was the only one who could have known that he would be here, trussed up like a fowl. Sora was struggling trying to take off the blindfold through pressing against the trunk of the willow tree. Uselessly. "Now, how about a little help?"

And then Sora felt two lips gently pushing on his own. It took ten entire seconds for his nervous system to inform him that, yes, Riku was really kissing him. His lips were warm, so warm that they made the brunet realize how cold the night could be when you were wearing wet clothes. He knew he had to do something, but the idea of pulling away never occurred to him. After years spent dreaming about him, Riku was finally kissing him. For real.

But then an awful thought started to grow in his mind, a thought that had not even crossed his mind until that moment: what if that was another joke from Cloud and Leon? What if he wasn't kissing Riku?

Sora moved away so fast that he hit the head of his mysterious savior. He stayed there for a moment, his shoulders touching the tree, not daring to move and too shocked to say anything. When he finally managed to free his hands and take off the blindfold, Sora was alone, with a faint flavor of cinnamon lingering on his lips.

End Notes: What a wild party, uh? Ah, how much I like to torture my characters. But it ended on a sweet note for Sora after all, didn't it? And what if I would told you that things will go even worse in the next chapter? After all, with Seifer thrown in the mix it couldn't be any different... I'd like to give you a very long chapter next time, so you could show your greatness by giving me some really needed reviews in exchange... please? I've not got a lot from last one and I'm feeling quite sad about it :).

On a side note, in the useless-but-always-fun poll I've put on my profile page it appears that a lot of people want to see Roxas and Riku together. Seriously did not expecting that...
