Wallis sat in the Impala, Dean driving beside her. She was filing through the glove compartment, bringing out old tapes. There were numerous newspaper clippings amongst the tapes, along with an old phone that seemed hardly used.
"This yours?" She asked, holding up the phone to Dean, who cast a glance to it. His face hardened for a moment, then relaxed again.
"No, erm, that was my dad's. Just leave it in there." He said, shrugging. Wallis complied, sitting the phone in the back of the glove box. She reached for the last tape, sitting it amongst the pile beside her and closing the latch. Picking them up and sitting them in her lap, she began to rummage through them.
"AC/DC, Iron Maiden, ASIA," She picked up numerous tapes, reading them aloud until she found one that made her smirk. "Air Supply?" She said, turning to him whilst holding the tape up. Dean's eyes widened and he opened his mouth to speak, his lips and jaw moving but no words coming out. Finally;
"I-It's not mine." He said, shaking his head with a smile. "It's Sammy's. The kid can't get enough of 'em." He said, lifting his hands from the wheel slightly and nodding. Wallis' smile grew as she sarcastically nodded along.
"You sure, Dean? You're not just - All Out of Love?" She asked in a sad voice, referencing the band's most famous song. Dean pursed his lips and sighed, staring at the road. Wallis laughed, sitting the tape beside her. "Oh my god!" She cried, upon reading the messy writing on the tape.
"What's wrong?" Dean asked, worry in his voice.
"Nothing, absolutely nothing! Everything is great!" She beamed, holding up the Queen tape in her hand. "You didn't tell me you had Queen!" She cried again. Dean's grip on the wheel relaxed and he smiled.
"Queen fan, huh?" He asked, holding out his hand for the tape. Wallis placed it on his palm, her fingers brushing his as she did so. She quickly cast her gaze down to the tapes again so as to not catch any awkward glances from him. She heard Dean sliding the tape into the player, then waited eagerly in the silence. Suddenly, four harmonious voices blared through the Impala.
Adventure seeker on an empty street,
Just an alley creeper, light on his feet
A young fighter screaming, with no time for doubt
With the pain and anger can't see a way out,
It ain't much I'm asking, I heard him say,
Gotta find me a future move out of my way,
I want it all, I want it all, I want it all, and I want it now.
"I love this song!" Wallis cried excitedly, gathering the tapes up in her hands and placing them back in the glove compartment. Dean smiled, nodding his head along as he focused on the road.
"Hey, keep the AC/DC one out, would you?" He asked. Wallis picked out the tape, holding it in her hands as she closed the glove box.
"You know, when my dad - my real dad -" Wallis said, giving a sad smirk as she corrected herself. "When he was younger, he saw Queen in concert twice." She added, looking out to the dark, empty road.
"No way?" Dean asked. Wallis nodded.
"Yeah, he loved them." She smiled. "I had to leave all my old tapes back home, along with our old car." She sighed.
"What kind?"
"A ford. Nothing special. Nothing nearly as special as this." She answered Dean, her fingers sliding along the door. "Now we have a crappy Toyota that picks and chooses when it wants to start."
"I could fix that," Dean offered, but after he said it, his face fell. "If I weren't leaving town tomorrow..." He added, as if he had only just remembered.
"It's fine, there's a mechanic near our apartment." Wallis said with a smile, trying to lighten the mood. "I never had to take Madox to the mechanics." She sighed.
"Madox?" Dean asked, confusion shown in his raised eyebrow.
"Yeah, we named our Ford, Madox. After Ford Madox Ford?" She explained. Dean's face remained puzzled. "The writer? Ford Madox Ford? Really?" She asked.
"Yeah, Sammy's the one that reads, not me." He laughed.
"So, what about this?" Wallis asked, gesturing to the car. "What's this called? It must have a name."
"Baby. She's my Baby." Dean smiled proudly, tapping the dashboard. Wallis shook her head, a small laugh escaping her lips.
"Of course, why didn't I guess?" She smirked. Dean's head turned to look out the window and Wallis caught sight of a small diner on the side of the road.
"Hey, you wan'na get a burger?" He asked, turning to face Wallis, his thumb pointing back to the diner.
"I don't have any money, left it in the apartment." She said, an apologetic look on her face.
"Well then, it's a good thing - " Dean paused, grabbing the AC/DC case with one hand and opening it. "I do." He said, pulling out ten dollars from behind the tape and smiling. He pulled the car over to the side of the road and cut the engine.
Wallis and Dean walked into the quiet diner, the only other occupants being an old man and the waitress that was pouring his coffee. Dean nodded to a booth at the far side of the room and Wallis followed, looking around her. As they sat down in the booth, the waitress approached them.
"Hey, what can I get you guys?" She smiled, though her eyes were tired. "Anything I could do to make this a little more romantic fo-"
"He's not my date." Wallis cut in, pointing to Dean. A familiar smirk was back on Dean's face, spreading to his eyes.
"Oh, I'm sorry." The waitress smiled awkwardly. "So, what can I get you guys?" Dean straightened his back, turning his gaze to the waitress.
"Well, - " He squinted his eyes to read her name badge. "- Alana - I'm Dean, by the way, could we have two of your finest burgers and two coffees please?" He smiled to her, looking at her for longer than necessary. "And maybe a little more sugar." He added, casting a look to the empty sugar jar on the table. Alana smiled at him, tucking her blonde curling hair behind her ear and smiling.
"Sure." She smiled, tucking her notepad away in her apron and making her way to the kitchen. Wallis was still watching Dean, an unamused look on her face. Dean's eyes widened and he laughed.
"What?" He asked, folding his arms on the table and leaning on them.
"Can you go anywhere without flirting with the first girl you see?" She laughed.
"I didn't." He said plainly, shrugging. Wallis was unconvinced.
"Oh really?"
"You were the first girl I saw, I didn't flirt with you." He retorted with a smirk. Wallis rolled her eyes. The waitress returned with their coffees, along with an extra sugar jar.
"Tell me when." She said to Dean, tipping some sugar into his mug as they smiled at each other. Wallis rolled her eyes again, leaning forward on her elbows.
"When." She said, trying to get their attention. Neither of the two even blinked. "Oh, for God's sake, he didn't order diabetes!" She said, moving the waitress' hand away from Dean's mug. Dean's head snapped round to look at Wallis. The waitress was also looking at her.
"I'll get your burgers." She said through her teeth. Wallis gave her a sickeningly sweet smile before the waitress turned and left them. Wallis laughed and looked to Dean, who stared at her.
"What do you think the chances are of her spitting in my burger?" She laughed. Dean sighed and shuffled in his seat.
"You're lucky I don't spit in your coffee." He moaned, swirling his own cup.
"Hey, I'm only looking out for your health. How's your coffee?" She asked as he sipped at his drink. Wallis saw him attempting to cover up his grimace at the sweetness. "I thought so." She laughed. The waitress returned with their burgers, sitting Dean's down first.
"One burger for Dean," She smiled at him. "And one for his mom." She said, sitting the other in front of Wallis, who placed her elbows on the table and clasped her hands, resting her chin on them and smiling up at the waitress, looking to her hand and noticing the red mark on her finger.
"Does your fiance know that you flirt with customers?" She asked, the same sweet smile on her face. From the corner of her eye she could see Dean looking at her questioningly.
"I-I don't have a fiance." She said, laughing nervously. Just then, the door behind the counter opened.
"Hey, honey! Come give me a hand back here." A man called, then shut the door once again. Wallis laughed, looking at the waitress.
"Timing is a bitch, right?" She laughed, sending the waitress huffily back to the counter. Picking up her coffee cup, Wallis looked to Dean, who still had the same confused expression. "What?"
"How the hell did you know she was engaged?" He asked, leaning over the table slightly. "She wasn't wearing a ring, I checked."
"Exactly." Wallis smiled. "I saw the mark on the inside of her finger when she sat down my spit-burger. In all honesty, it was a really lucky guess that paid off." She shrugged, drinking her coffee. Dean smirked, unbelievingly.
"I guess that's my date for the night ruined." He said, looking back into the kitchen.
"What, did you expect me to walk back to the motel?" Wallis laughed.
"No," He said. "But I'm breaking tradition. After most cases I go to a bar or something, see a girl - "
"I know how this ends, Dean." Wallis said plainly, shooting him an unimpressed glance. Dean lowered his head, nodding.
"Hey, you want half of my burger?" He asked, seeing that Wallis was picking at the bun. "I don't want you catching a cold or something from your spit-burger." He said.
"Sure, thanks." Wallis said, sitting her burger on a napkin as Dean split his burger.
Later on, as they drove back to the motel, Dean had swapped the Queen tape for the AC/DC tape and they travelled down the dark, empty road once again. Wallis noticed the clock on the dashboard, seeing that it was almost midnight.
"Amy's going to kill me." She smirked, rubbing her eyes slightly.
"You think they found the beer?" Dean asked rhetorically, laughing. They sat in silence as they entered the town again, the neon signs of the local businesses brightening the street.
As they pulled into the motel, the door of their motel room opened, a large silhouette standing in the doorway.
"Oh, this'll be fun." Wallis said, opening the car door and stepping out into the parking lot.
"You get used to it." Dean replied, stepping out of the car.
"Dean, what the hell?!" Sam cried, throwing his arms wide. "I called you like, six times."
"Sorry, Sam. Dean was trying to pull waitresses." Wallis said, walking up to them.
"Pull? What do you mean?" He asked, not understanding her term.
"Oh, sorry. I mean 'pick - up' waitresses. Sorry, British thing." She said with a wave of her hand.
"Yeah, well Amy's inside." Sam sighed.
"Wait, where's Cas?" Dean asked. Sam gave him a look of apology.
"He had to go, something on Angel Radio."
"They have their own radio?" Wallis asked, slightly impressed.
"No, it's - they can hear each other think. It's damn annoying, really." Dean explained, then let out a sigh.
"Well, anyway, he left so I let Amy copy some notes from dad's journal." Sam said, nodding back into the motel room. Wallis walked inside, finding Amy at the small table by the window.
"Where the bloody hell have you been?!" Amy cried, sitting the pen down on the desk. Wallis shrugged.
"We went to get a burger." She said, sitting down in the spare chair. "So, pretty boy left, huh?" Wallis asked, referring to Cas.
"Yes, so?" Amy asked, picking up the pen again. She flicked through the old, leather bound journal.
"I was just asking, I mean, you seemed pretty enthralled." Wallis said, looking at Amy with a smirk.
"You're in no position to make assumptions like that, Wallis." Amy said. "You've just disappeared for two hours with someone you apparently have no feelings for whatsoever."
"And I don't!" Wallis said. "And keep your voice down, for God's sake!" She added, in a whisper, looking behind her. "You ready to leave?" Wallis asked. Amy sat up straight and put the lid on the hotel pen.
"Sure." She said, folding up the paper she had been writing on and stuffed it in her jacket pocket. The two girls walked back out into the parking lot, standing under the large neon sign in front of Sam and Dean.
"Well, guys. It was good seeing you again." Said Amy, looking to Sam, then to Dean. "Good luck, live long and prosper and may the odds be ever in your favour." She added with a wave, then walked back to their own car, leaving Wallis with Sam and Dean.
"This was, interesting." Wallis nodded. "Good luck, guys. With everything. If you ever need help, apparently you have two new allies, so just call either of us and we'll do our best." She added, sighing but smiling. "I'll see you around." She added with a wave, then turned to walk to the car.
"Wallis!" Dean called. She turned on her heels, facing them once again.
"Yeah?" She asked him.
"Here," He said, bringing his hand out of the pocket of his old leather jacket. Wallis held out her hand. "I don't listen to it much, and since you had to leave all yours back home..." Wallis accepted the tape, turning it over in her hand to find the word QUEEN scribbled over it. Wallis' mouth opened slightly, she wasn't sure what to say.
"Wow, erm, thanks. Are you sure? I don't know if I can - "
"Take it." Dean persisted. "I've got enough." He laughed. Sam seemed almost as surprised as Wallis.
"Wow." Wallis repeated. She looked up at them both again, smiling. "I'll see you around." She said again, waving. The two men nodded, Sam giving a small wave as she turned around, walking to the car. Looking down to the tape in her hands, something inside her made her smile as she ran her fingers over the scribbled writing.
