I've been dreading this moment for the past two years now. I wanted to avoid this as long as possible. Hatsuharu stares at me with seemingly no emotion.
"Haruhi you're back." He states before giving me a sweet smile. I stand here, unmoving. I should say something to him but I can't. "Why are you soaked?" His smile turns into a concerned frown.
I give him a quizzical expression. Why is he acting so casual and calm? Especially after what I did.
"Haruhi?" Concern is evident in his eyes.
Why? I don't deserve it.
"Um I was caught up in the rain." I mutter. I quickly disconnect the eye contact that we held.
"You should change before you get sick." He suggests. I just nod dumbly before turning around and walking into my room.
Two years away couldn't prepare me for seeing him again. I saw no hint of hurt, betrayal, or pain in his features. Why? He should hate me for what I did.
I quickly change out of my uniform and dress into a tank top and some loose shorts. I make my way towards he stairs, but my phone ringing stops me, The caller I.D reveals the face of Kaoru. I quickly decline his call and continue towards my destination.
I honestly don't feel like anymore confrontation today.
I see that Shigure is watching Kyo and Yuki fight with amusement.
"What are they fighting about?" I ask my elder.
"Kyo freaked out our little house maid." The cursed man practically sings. I look over to the two bickering boys. Yuki must really like Tohru. There's obvious affection in his eyes when he looks and speaks to her. I switch my gaze over to my brother. I wonder how he feels about Tohru.
Kyo and Yuki never gotten along. Kyo would always attack Yuki for some reason. Their fights used to be so extreme, but now they're practically tame.
Yuki and I rarely had any interaction with each other. Every time he spoke to me, it was distant. I figured that it was because my brother is the hated zodiac, but now? Now that I see him interacting with Kyo I think differently. Yuki has showed me genuine emotion ever since I got here. When Haru and I used to visit him, he barely acknowledged me. His words always sounded cold to my ears. What caused his attitude towards me to change so severely?
"Haruhi?" A voice shakes me from my thoughts. I turn to see Hatsuharu staring at me.
"Hey." I give him a small smile.
"Are you okay? You've been staring at the wall for a while now." He asks. Does that mean he was watching me?
"I'm fine, I was just thinking about some assignment for school." I answer him. Before he could respond, my phone rings again. It's Kaoru. Shigure peeks over, nosily, to look at my phone.
"Haruhi's getting a call from her boyfriend~" He yells out. Why the hell is he in such a good mood today?
"Shut up he's not my boyfriend." I growl at my idiot cousin.
"Denial~"
"Idiot." I mumble. I start to head back upstairs, bit Shigure grabs my wrist.
"What kind of guardian would I be if I didn't make sure that your conversation was PG?" He smiles innocently. I know not to be fooled by his demeanor. There has always been something off about him. No matter how sincere he appeared to be, I couldn't believe it. He kind of reminds me of Kyoya.
In my peripheral view, I can see Hatsuharu sitting as he eyes me.
"Fine whatever." I grumble and answer the phone, not having the energy to fight.
"Hey Haruhi! Are you busy tomorrow?" Kaoru's light voice held no anger, which takes me by slight surprise. Only slight.
"Besides school?" I raise an eyebrow.
I could practically hear him rolling his eyes. "Do you wanna come over after school?"
"Why?" My thoughts immediately go to Hikaru's angry state from earlier.
"We owe you an apology."
"You also owe me fancy tuna."
I can hear his chuckle, "Yeah that too, so what do you say?"
"Sure why not." I shrug. A smile graces my lips at the thought of hanging out with my friends.
"Yay! Hikaru she said yes!" I didn't get to hear Hikaru's response to his brother's words. "We'll see you at school tomorrow okay? Sweet dreams!" And with that, he hung up.
"Fancy Tuna?" I hear Hatsuharu question.
I let out a small chuckle, "Yeah it's so yummy!" I practically drool at the thought.
"You haven't changed at all." I look over to see that Hatsuharu has a small, genuine smile on his face.
"Dinner's ready!" Tohru calls.
After dinner, everyone either goes upstairs, or the living room. Before I could leave the dining room, Hatsuharu grabs my wrist.
"Haruhi…" His eyes plead for me to stay.
"Hey." I whisper lamely. His hand leaves my wrist and moves to my hair. He grabs a piece and holds it between his fingers.
"You cut it."
"I had to, a kid stuck gum in it." I grimace at the memory.
"It looks nice."
"Thanks."
We stare into each other's eyes for what seems like eternity. I can see Hatsuharu internally battle about something.
"Why didn't you keep in contact?" He murmurs bitterly. His hand moves away from my hair and onto my face. Though his words were harsh, his thumb gently rubbed my cheek.
So many answers ran through my head. I could lie. I could say that I didn't want to talk to him. I could say that I wanted to move on or distance myself from the family. But instead I choose to tell him the truth, "I was afraid."
"Afraid? Or did you really not care. Do you hate me Haruhi? You didn't even call to tell me you were here. I had to find out from Momiji. Do you hate me this much?" He smirks cruelly. I stare at Black Haru with confliction.
"I gave you my answer, so don't put words into my mouth."
"You expect me to believe you were afraid? You're afraid of thunder, not phone calls." He growls.
"I was afraid to talk to you…"
"So afraid that you couldn't tell me that you were leaving for two fucking years Haruhi." His tone becomes darker and slightly terrifying. I deserve this. I deserve this rage. I should have told him instead of running. I should have called him or even sent him a letter, but I didn't. I let my fear rule me. Not only my fear of confronting what happened with Hatsuharu, but also my fear of my curse being broken being known.
"You're right, I should have told you, but I didn't. I should have stayed in contact, but I didn't. I can't change that now. The past is the past and no matter how much I want to; I can't change it. I'm sorry I hurt you." I see Black Haru's eyes soften as his anger fades. Black Haru is here no more, but instead the original is in his place.
"I missed you." He leans his head to lay on mine.
"I missed you too."
"Haru-chan!" Honey senpai bounces once I enter the club room. The twins immediately slither their way next to me. Both wrap an arm around me and guide me to the side of the room.
"So Haruhi," Kaoru starts.
"Are you still coming over tonight." Hikaru finishes in a mischievous tone.
"It's not like I have anything better to do." I shrug.
"That's so mean Haruhi." Kaoru sniffles.
I glance to the side to see Tamaki slowly inching his way closer. That reminds me, why didn't he say anything yesterday? I thought that he would be upset as well, but he didn't even utter a word. Strange.
"Haruhi," Tamaki whines, "There's a nasty rumor going around that you're going to the Hitachiin mansion today. Tell me that they're just rumors!"
"They're not rumors senpai." I roll my eyes.
"What did those two devils-"
"HEY!"
"Do to trick you into going?! Did they bribe you? Haruhi come to daddy's house instead!" Tamaki cries.
"Why should I?" I give him a blank stare.
"Because I won't do questionable things to you! We can have a sleepover! Spend some quality time with your father!"
"No. And you're not my father!" I answer and the twins trade high fives. "Now if you would excuse me, I have a debt to work off." I mumble.
"Hurry up Haruhi!"
"Yeah you're so slow!" The twins yell at me. I growl under my breath lowly, but continue to ignore them and pack up my belongings.
"Haruhi please reconsider!" Tamaki begs.
I shake my head.
"Then I'll go with you!" He brightens.
"Sorry, no idiots allowed." The twins grin while literally dragging me from the room.
We sit inside their limo and I listen to the twins plot. Something about dressing me up and doing my makeup? Honestly I really don't care as long as I get some fancy tuna.
The limo drops us off and the two boys continue to drag me. I have two feet for a reason!
"Can you quit dragging me!" I glower warningly at them.
"Sorry, we're just excited." Kaoru informs me sheepishly. They let go of me, which causes me to fall. I let out a deep sigh before dusting myself off and standing up.
"Come on let's go to our room!" Hikaru runs up the stairs. A lot of stairs. I grimace at the thought of climbing them.
"Don't fall behind Haruhi!" Kaoru calls while following his brothers lead.
Ten minutes later and I'm practically wheezing. If they're so rich, then why don't they have a damn elevator! I glare at the flight of stairs in annoyance.
"Wow you're really out of shape." Hikaru comments as he takes in my panting form.
"The fancy tuna might not be such a good idea." Koaru comments.
"Yeah she'll just get fat." Hikaru nods his head.
"Fuck off." I growl at them.
They both gasped, "Haruhi just said a naughty word!"
"You know what this means." Koaru grins.
"Punishment." The same smile from earlier suits Hikaru's face.
"Maybe she shouldn't get any fancy tuna." Koaru suggest.
"Don't you dare! I earned that." I bark.
"Looks like you're just gonna have to earn it back." Hikaru remarks.
"Fu-"
"Nuh uh uh" Hikaru tsks.
"Be a good girl and you get all the tuna your little heart desires."
"I might as well just leave now then." I mutter.
"Wait!"
"We were just kidding!" Koaru chuckles nervously.
"Were you now?" I murmur sarcastically.
"Come on let's get to the room." Hikaru changes the subject. The three of us enter their room.
Holy Shit!
This is like an apartment inside a house! They have a living room, bathroom, and bedroom! Hell, I think this is bigger than Ranka's apartment.
"Welcome to our humble abode!"
"Do you guys really need all this space?" I question.
"Of course we do!" Hikaru scoffs.
"So," I switch between looking into their eyes, "Why did you two invite me here?"
"To hang out with you of course." Koaru says softly.
"That's a load of bull." I state simply.
"I'm sorry." Hikaru quickly says. Before I can respond, he continues, "I shouldn't have lost my temper. But why didn't you tell us?" His tone becomes frustrated.
I sit on one of the three couches in the room, "It would be kind of weird if I just mentioned it out of nowhere."
"I guess you're right." Hikaru and Kaoru sit next to me.
"You know what's funny?" Kaoru chuckles humorlessly, "If we did know about your family background then we wouldn't have concerned ourselves with you. We never would have let you into our world."
