Chapter 7
Mel POV
The days flew by and I felt more comfortable in La Push. Emily and the rest were very welcoming and patient. It was, by far the most relaxed period in my life.
You see, I've spent about ten years heading in and out of my home, institutes, hospitals, police departements, court and such. I'm so happy and worried at the same time. I'm happy because I'm finally trying to live the life of a teenage girl. I'm sad because I am so terrified that something and/or someone are going to try and take that away from me.
As you didn't know, I came here in secret. None of my friends or family know that I'm here; except one – my aunty. If the rest knew that I came living here. I probably wouldn't be alive right now. My social worker arranged everything for me that I could leave Malta and head here. When I heard that Emily wanted me with her, I was thrilled. She was my angel sent from Heaven.
After I settled in with Emily, I prepared everything that she needed to know about my past. She was shocked about everything, you could say. I showed her all my accident reports, police reports, everything. I made her promise that she couldn't tell this to anyone, not even Sam. She promised me that my secret's safe with her. I also made her sign a type of contract which states that if something harmful was to come in my way, she wasn't responsible and wouldn't get involved in all the craziness. At first, she didn't want to, but then I made her sign. I couldn't risk her safety or anyone else's. If something was to happen, I'd fight for it myself, after I'm sure no one would get hurt..
She looked at me with symphaty and tears in her eyes but I remained still. I couldn't break the wall now, after I've spent years of building it...
...
Anyways, after the touchy moment was over, we continued living our usual lives. I help her out around the house, do some chores, go do the shopping for her etc. You could say I've gotten pretty close with the boys, Leah and Emily. I still wasn't joining in on much stuff. Whenever I saw them huddled in the living room, I wouldn't go in, unless invited. I kept a distance between us. I didn't want them to get mixed up with me. I'm a bad influence on them. Not the type of girl they want around.
It hurt to still be a little left out, but this time it was my choice. Ever since the night I was found in the woods, I barely went out. I only left the house for grocery shopping. I started to feel as though i'm becoming a piece of the furniture in the house. One day, as I was walking to the grocery shop. I noticed and antique souvenir shop which had all types of Quileute trinkets. As I entered the store, I remebered the crystal I had found in the woods, which I always carry with me in my pockets. As I looked around the small store, I found the perfect type of string which could be useful as a necklace string. It was perfect. It was brown and stiff, like those used for Indian jewellery. I went to the sales girl to buy it and was kind enough to help me with the crystal and string. It was beautiful. After I payed her I immediately put it on and the light of the sun made the crystal look as though it was magical. Shortly afterwards, I headed to the grocery shop and began walking down the aisles to collect whatever Emily wanted for those boys.
As soon as I finished the VERY long list that Emily gave me, I headed to the ice cream section and found the last oreo ice cream. I made a beeline for it, but was a little to slow as someone else took it. I looked to the other person's eyes only to find Seth Clearwater. "Hey Seth," I managed to mumble while still looking at the tub of ice cream. " What up chica?" Instead of calling me Mel or by my full name, he started calling me chica sometimes because he said and I quote : "You're spicy and mysterious." Oh you have no idea...
"Not much. Came to do some shopping for Emily, though not everything is found." "What's missing?" he asked. Man he seemed panicky all of a sudden. He sure does love food. "You see, there was written a tub of ice-cream of Oreos for me to eat along the way back" I smiled at him angelically. He narrowed his eyes and said, "Oh I see what game you're playing. I'll make you a deal. Since I'm heading back to Emily's we'll split. I take half the oreos and you take the other half. Deal?" He took out his hand and spit on it, so as to close the deal. From the look on his face I could see that he thought I was going to back out; Oh hell to the no. "Deal", I said. I spit on my own hand and shook hands. His mouth opened wide in shock and stayed like that until I payed the boy behind the counter and took off. "Sethy, why don't ya close your mouth and open the ice-cream eh?" "Right", he mumbled.
Then as he was smirking, he said " Oh gosh, only one spoon." His eyes were shining full of hope that I would mind sharing a spoon with him. Well, he was dead wrong. "That's okay, I don't mind sharing the same one." He looked at me in shock. "You really don't mind? I thought girls hated the idea of sharing stuff like that." "Well, there are girls who think that it's disgusting but since I know you and you're clean, I don't mind, unless of course you are." "No no no, I don't mind" And with that he smiled at me and shook his head. "What?" "Oh nothing," he said, "It's just that you're really down to our level and that's perfect. You see not many girls are willing to share stuff like that. They start going all 'Ewww gross'". I couldn't help myself. The way he tried to imitate a girl saying that, I was on my knees with laughter. We ended up laughing all the way, while still eating the ice-cream.
"What took you so long girl? I was gonna die here!" said a very hungry looking Tom. "This guy," I said pointing to Seth, while putting away all the items in cupboards and the fridge. "Now, if you'll excuse me," I marched passed Seth, who was now sitting on the sofa, half sprawled, holding the heavenly goodness in his outstretched hand, I prepared myself for the grab and run. As soon as I made contact with the tub, I sprinted all the way to the bathroom, while Seth was laughing and shouting at the same time to give him bakc the ice cream. "No chance in hell, Sethy." "MELLL," he all but growled in a playful manner and, with some luck on my side, I managed to escpae him and locked myself in the bathroom. He began playfully threatening me that he's gonna blow the door down. However I had another idea. Seein as the bathroom I was in was at the last storey, I was very close to the roof. So, with the tub of ice-cream in my mouth, I managed to climb up all the way to the rooftop and sat up there looking at the new view and eating my beloved Oreos ic-cream.
