Chapter 6-Smashing through walls
The horde of females pushed against each other to get to the center of their attention.
Apparently, grace and wholesomeness just isn't the in thing anymore.
"Oh, Kuran-san, I've seen a limo drop you off at the corner of our school's street every morning." Her eyelashes fluttered dramatically as she thought in awe of the vehicle she's only seen in movies like The Princess Diaries.
"It must be wonderful!" another lanky girl gasped and leaned forward to push a suggestion. "Maybe, you can give me a lift sometime…" her glossy lips formed a stiff, sensual pout as she eyed her admired one, only to receive a cold glance and no verbal response.
"Absurd! You've got to have looks like me or…or Ruka to have the right to something romantic like that!" Another screeched and abruptly tugged the other's wiry hair.
A simple action like that triggered something primal in the other girls as they retracted their own claws and began to scratch the nearest to them, all the while shrieking words that Kaname Kuran had no interest in deciphering.
Taking the chance to slip away, he grabbed his Italian leather-bound notebook and exited the room in haste.
As he rounded the next corner, however, he was unexpectedly met with another body, and their heads collided painfully, causing them to backtrack and clutch their heads from the shock of the collision.
Dizzy from accident and from the already aching head, the silverette he bumped into cursed inwardly-enough curses to cause a living thing to shrivel up and die if he was more tactless than he already was to release the verbal abuse.
"Do be more careful next time. I've not the patience to deal with any more annoyances for this day." Kaname quickly excused himself after seeing who the unfortunate creature he crashed into was.
"H-hey! You're not the only one who life's being a bitch to….Just wait a second!" He was not even given the chance to recover when he found out that Kaname had –instead- found his way to him, and was currently making haste. Away from him. Damn it all!
"I've got something to say to you!" He grasped the other's shoulder before he could walk any further away. Kaname paused for a while, before emotionlessly turning around to face Zero.
"You have something to say? Say it then. But be quick about it; I've somewhere to be." He arrogantly folded his arms and began to tap his forearm.
A conceited mannerism.
Zero took note of it.
Clearing his throat, he sifted through the many statements he practiced over and over, only to find out that he hadn't decided which one would be the least irking to the brunette. He was still glaring down, and Zero had to fight the urge to just punch the man's damned chiseled face.
'It's not like I want this too! If anything, I'd never want to see you again!'
"Right. You see, during the weekend, I did think I went...a bit overboard."
"Hnn."
Zero received a blank stare along with the response and as tempting as it was to reply with his trademark icy glare, he bit back the urge and continued with whatever it was he was supposed to do. Was it just him, or was the air around causing his shoulders to tense up?
"Listen, I'm not saying you're completely right—"
'Because God knows you aren't, you conceited prick.'
"But I am admitting that I've made…..a small, unintentionally irrational- oversight."
'Ha, take that. I can also talk with a straight face.'
Zero raised his chin to emphasize the fact that, no, he was not in any way, lowering his pride to apologize to him. And that this was definitely one of the most difficult things he has ever done. Because definitely no, Zero Kiryuu does not apologize for anything he meant to do.
Shouldn't anyway, but this was sadly one of those extremely rare cases.
"You don't sound so sincere." The brunette casually remarked before brushing off the other in a rush towards the school's parking lot.
Just recovering from the rebuff, Zero quickly released the scowl he had been holding in as he silently stalked the other tall form in the same pace. In his pockets, his hands formed into fists when he saw that Kaname had not looked back towards him even until he reached his destination.
A sleek, black limousine pulled up before them both and the driver stepped out quickly to open the door for his young master. As he was about to greet however, he noticed the angry student beside the ever calm and collected brunette.
"Your, umm…..friend, master Kaname?" He timidly asked as his eyes darted to sharp lilac ones.
The brunette only raised his brow elegantly before finally facing said 'friend'.
"I had told you I was in a hurry, hadn't I? You're not that bright after all."
Seething, Zero withdrew his hands from their hiding places and grabbed the other by the shoulders. This alarmed the driver, though this was because he could not see the flicker of amusement in Kaname's eyes.
"Unhand me, Kiryuu-kun. If this is your way of showing your sincerity, then you are failing quite miserably."
"What do you want, you stupid asshole?" Zero's eyes widened when he realized he should be going easy on his words if he wanted to get on the other's good side, because, well damn you Hanabusa!
"Okay, scratch that. I said-"
Before he could continue, a loud, distinct ringtone blared from within the limousine. The two others with Zero were looking at each other nervously, as if the call had signaled something dreadful that only they could have they knowledge of. Hastily, the middle-aged moved in to accept the call.
Zero observed the brunette as he watched with nervously alert eyes as his driver received the message. He could be seen wiping his brows as replied with short yes's before turning back to Kaname.
"She escaped again!"
:::::::
"Your face is going to shape ghoulishly if you keep pressing your palms into your face like that."
Shizuka watched as her son was pulled back to the real world after spending so much time in his thoughts. Maybe….too much in his thoughts that Shizuka's neatly shaped brows began to meet.
Was her son having problems in school?
Motherly instincts took over, and her eyes began to narrow menacingly.
"Stop the angry eyes. It actually makes you look old."
"Well I wouldn't do it if you didn't look so emotionally assaulted."
Shizuka waited a few seconds to receive a biting retort.
And then minutes passed.
And then there was a heavy sigh.
Now when your son tells you to stop minding his business, you actually stop.
You stop letting him know that you're secretly taking more notes on his peculiar behavior, starting with the way his eyes are just so dazed and filled with worry.
And then there's the fidgeting. Zero doesn't do fidgeting.
And then more sighs.
And what is up with that distant look that's making him seem like he's-
"You can ask for my advice anytime, you know. It's free."
Clearly, he was irritated by her interruption in his own brooding. But as he heavily dragged his feet away from the dining room, he suddenly paused and pursed his lips; once again in deep thought.
"…How….how do you make someone….like you again?"
Oooh.
bullseye.
Though his back was faced to her, Shizuka did not need any more proof to satisfy her. Her mouth had curved upwards, and she was grinning madder than the cheschire cat.
Time sure flies fast; had it been that long ago that he 'baked' her a mud pie?
"Don't get it wrong, okay! Just a….a friend I had an argument with, and I really need to be back on this….friend's good side." Zero scratched his head, his bangs lowered to cover his face.
Were there long pauses before the word friend? Because this was getting too entertainingly suspicious. Shizuka had to keep a normal expression on her face to keep her excitement a little less obvious.
"…Argument, you say?"
The silverette actively nodded at the moment she spoke.
"Hmmmmmm….."
So maybe her sadistic side was overpowering her supportive side, and she seriously needed to stop smirking lest she wanted her boy to just storm out without hearing any fine piece of advice.
The teen was starting to squirm under her scrutiny and she had to hand it to him for not yet releasing an outburst at her slight teasing.
"Ah, yes. Well, first of, you've got to apologize; in the sincerest way possible."
Zero gracelessly snorted.
"And then, you have to wait for the other to truly forgive you. Don't hassle or be annoying about it. Wait for them to approach you themselves. Things like these solve in time."
"I don't have time!"
"Oh, and what do you mean by that?"
"Nothing." He clamped his mouth firmly shut, before speeding towards the room's exit.
"Introduce me to her when you guys stop quarreling!"
"I don't know what you're talking about!"
And though the door was slammed none-too-gently, and the frames on the walls shook like crazy, Shizuka was unperturbed; calmly humming, as she was getting back to knitting a small purple scarf.
"Oh, well. I still have my baby Ichiru."
She said to herself with a twinkle in her eyes.
::::::
"Kiryuu; three o'clock tomorrow, got it?"
Zero let out a grunt of acknowledgement as his archery coach gave him a hard pat on his shoulder.
He watched as his sensei lumbered away in a joyous march. He's happy. The silverette couldn't say the same about himself though.
It was almost the end of today's classes again, and he had been moving about, room to room like a loner. It's this dilemma that's ruining his life!
His situation's just so bad that he had to ask for some advice about Kuran Kaname from his mother. His mother!
Nobody ever does that unless there was no other option left.
And it's all because that pompous prick had to rush off like Zero hadn't been there talking to him; apologizing.
All that fretting over an escaped what, a dog? Pet Chihuahua? His aunt's turtle? Stupid Kuran. They should've kept whatever it was on a tight leash or something. Zero was just pissed beyond belief.
The students were already piling out of their classes, and being one who had an aversion for crowds, Zero decided to push his way out and finally get some breath of fresh air once he was out of the school building.
As he was about to exit, a hand secured itself on his shoulder, making the silverette turn quickly from reflex.
"Akatsuki!" he exclaimed out of surprise.
"Hey."
"You've been missing all your classes!"
The distressed teen continued to complain. "Heck, you guys just completely ditched me."
Akatsuki took on a serious look as he glanced around, before he finally leant closer to whisper into Zero's ears.
"Hanabusa's been going off somewhere lately."
"Huh? Not sulking at home?"
"No." The tall brunette shook his head in disbelief. "I followed him one time, and he just sat there; on a bench in some family park."
Zero had to raise his eyebrows at that. But really, they had to give the guy a break; and to see him go out for a breather was probably a good sign.
"You really should just leave him alone, you know. It's probably some post-depression kind of thing."
But Akatsuki only ran his hand through his hair in frustration.
"I don't know, Zero. I'm so confused with the way he's acting. I just hope you're starting to do what you're supposed to do. You know, get this done and over with."
His friend turned his heel and walked off towards the entrance hall, leaving quicker than he came. Zero couldn't help but feel that the weight he was carrying now doubled after that talk.
"Well, wasn't that quite….affectionate?"
Lilac eyes widened upon hearing the familiar timbre of voice.
"The way you two were whispering to each other, could give people the wrong idea."
Kuran Kaname.
Impeccable timing.
Zero turned cautiously to face him, this man who shook their pillars and caused their small worlds to come crashing down. His eyes took in the other's perfect mauve eyes, watching the silverette under the hood of eyelashes blended in the strands that fell on his face.
Zero could feel a little nervousness creep in now that he was finally facing him again.
God damn it. Zero cursed at the feeling. He was only getting angrier by the second.
"Was that your science fair friend, Hanabusa?"
A little perturbed, he could do more than give a direct answer to the odd question thrown at him.
"No. Hanabusa's cousin."
"Well aren't you quite the family friend." He chuckled lightly, and Zero could see the sides of his eyes crinkle slightly as they gave way to his laughter.
The teen couldn't help but ask himself if they were finally alright. But really, when were they ever alright? It seemed as though each time they met, there would be little arguments here and there. Their encounters were always so confusing.
When the brunette became silent, Zero could feel the awkwardness rise again. Desperate to destroy the uncomfortable atmosphere, he threw out whatever he could ask to his schoolmate.
"So…uhhh….how is your dog?"
The handsome brunette only gave him a strange look.
"Oh, no. I just assumed. You were really perplexed, you know, when 'she' escaped."
If the topic was as awkward as the silence awhile ago, Kaname only shrugged it off.
"It's nothing to worry about."
And there was the pregnant pause again. It was unbearable, really. And Zero finally came to the conclusion that unless he brought it up, it would continue like this for so long.
'get this done and over with..'
Akatsuki's voice rang out in his head.
Get it over with Zero. Get it over with.
"Yesterday, I meant it. I'm sorry for the things I've said."
He squeezed his eyes shut. No way, he actually did it. Zero didn't know whether to cheer or to mourn for the side of him that would never accept this.
A little later, he felt a weight on his head. A palm was rhythmically tapping his silver tuft of hair.
Kaname Kuran was patting his head like he was some kid.
But it was probably the lesser evil, compared to being ridiculed and such. Still, the silverette felt a tiny bit of embarrassment at the warm act.
"I'm not mad at you. And besides, there are probably more out there who say much worse about me."
Oh, I believe it. I've heard.
Promptly slapping his hand away, Zero cleared his throat to regain a little dignity.
"So,yeah. I'm going home now." He turned around and walked away briskly before hearing the other call out to him.
"I'll see you."
"Huh?" He asked as he paused from his marathon-like pace.
"Tomorrow. See you." Kaname smiled before going off on his own way.
