Chapter 7: Dial L for Love

"So why did you pull us over to the side, Huey?" Caesar questioned his best friend's actions.

The three seniors were now inside of the busy school building, making residence against the metal lockers.

"Because I've got a plan to get Jazmine back." Huey replied coolly.

"She was never yours!" the two lover birds yelled at Huey in unison.

"Ya'll know what I mean." Huey rolled his eyes.

"So what's the plan?" Cindy placed her hands on hips.

"To call this number right here!" Huey quickly scrolled down the contact list of Cairo's cell phone. Once he highlighted the name Syria, Cindy and Caesar gasped. "Yep, this is Cairo's girlfriend in Chicago."

"Oh no…Cairo is playin' mah bestie." Cindy frowned. "We've got to tell her!"

"You know good and well she won't believe us." Caesar said.

"Well…she won't believe me; I think she'll listen to one of you two." Huey sighed. "I still find it hard she respects Cairo more than me now."

"Don't worry, once she drops that zero…" Cindy placed a hand on Huey's shoulder. "She'll realize how great you have and always will be to her."

"So how does the plan work?" Caesar stroked his chin.

"According to my Aunt Cookie, Syria really cares about Cairo a lot. So I figured if I called her and told what was happening, she'd be so upset that she would actually come to Woodcrest and confront Cairo, in front of Jazmine." Huey grinned.

"Like she has money just to waltz down here to the Boondocks." Cindy stated the obvious.

"She's got a point, Big Hue." Caesar added.

"Well maybe I should begin Phase One and actually see if this girl truly cares for Cairo like my aunt claims." Huey said while he punched in the numbers from Cairo's phone into his own.

After a couple of rings, a female voice came through the phone to greet Huey.

"Hello?"

"Yes, is this Syria?"

"Uh huh, who wants to know?" her voice didn't sound too happy.

"Well, I'm Huey, one of Cairo's childhood friends-"

"Wait! Are you the nigga that blacked my booka's eye when ya'll was ten?" Syria's angry tone crashed through the phone into Huey's eardrum.

"Yes…but that has nothing to do with why I called."

"Okay, why did you call?"

"I dunno how to say this but…your boyfriend is cheating on you."

"I call bullshit." Syria instantly yelled. "Cairo loves me and only me."

"I'm not BSing you. He's trying to get with my gir-…I mean one of my best friends."

"See, now I know you lyin' cuz mah baby ain't gay! He ain't into dick!"

"No, my best friend is a female, a female named Jazmine." Huey corrected.

"Suuuuuuuuuure, you just mad that Cairo cracked yo nose back in the day." Syria laughed. "Can't you just let it go? Like bygones be bygones and whatever…"

"You know, I was expecting you not to believe me off the bat, but I'll call you back when I can prove to you that Cairo is a damn dirty dog!" Huey then snapped his phone shut.

He then turned his back to see Caesar and Cindy looking at him, awaiting answers. When the young revolutionary shook his head left to right, the other two let out a small sigh and proceed to their first period class.

Later on around 12 O' Clock…

Huey, Riley, Caesar, Cindy, Jazmine and Cairo sat at a round lunch table in the jam-packed atrium. Everyone was enjoying the generic school lunch excluding Huey, who brought a salad from home. Cairo glanced over to Huey and noticed he had two salad containers, which was more than Huey could chew on in one sitting.

"Huey, why do you have two salads?" Cairo asked while taking a bite from his cheeseburger.

"Well I think Jazmine can answer that for you." Huey smirked.

All eyes were on Jazmine who for the first time in two years had a tray of school lunch in front of her. She eyed the greasy cheeseburger and French fries and felt her heart burning already. She noticed everyone looking at her and began to blush. Deep down she wanted Huey's salad but she knew it would upset Cairo. Plus, she has been acting shady towards all her friends and treating Huey like crap, so for her to easily drop her front like that wouldn't be a good look. A good look towards Cairo at least.

"Huey, can't you see I'm already eating?" Jazmine rolled her eyes.

"Drop the act; I know you hate school lunch as much Ruckus hates niggas." Huey pushed the salad towards her.

As the tray containing Huey's homemade salad slid towards the mulatto, her veins began to boil and her right eye twitched. Where did such a burst of rage come from?

"I DON'T WANT YOUR DAMN SALAD, OKAY?!" Jazmine yelled as she picked up the tray and threw it at Huey.

Lucky for him, he saw the tray coming and used his agility to dodge the incoming food by doing a quick back flip out of his seat.

"What the hell, Jazmine!" Huey got back into his seat and slammed his hands onto the table. "What crawled up your ass and made a nest of hate? Ever since Cairo came into the scene you've become a-" Huey stopped as he realized what he was about to say.

"Become a what?" Jazmine taunted. "What have I become?"

"A bitch." Huey said and dismissed himself from the table.

When the words escaped Huey's mouth, Jazmine instantly felt her world scatter. All these years of being with Huey and despite being teased, insulted, treated unfairly, tricked, you name it and Huey has done it. She never thought he'd called her that, but then again she deep down couldn't blame him, it's what she's becoming. A single tear released itself from her tear duct, following by another one. The whole table was shocked by the scene between the two former best friends. Cairo, however noticed the tears and instantly felt his heart become engulfed in rage.

"Huey turned yo ass back around now!" Cairo yelled hopping out of his seat.

The afro headed teenager then paused from his spot and turned around to face his enemy. Cairo stormed over to Huey with his fist balled and his head down.

"How dare you insult MY girlfriend like that." Cairo growled.

"Your girlfriend?" Huey asked in shock. 'Wait a second! That's it! If I get him to say that one more time…I'll record it on my phone!'

"Yes, Jazmine Dubois is my girlfriend now and not yours!" Cairo cackled.

Huey grinned as he fiddled with his phone in his pocket. He had recorded what Cairo just said. Accomplishing his mission, he simply waved to Cairo and turned back around to exit the area.

"Don't turn you back on me, nigga!" Cairo then snatched a tray out of a random student and tossed it at full speed towards Huey.

Huey sensed the item flying towards him and simply blocked with his right hand while still facing backwards. Right before he left though, the rebel with a cause reached into his pocket and tossed Cairo's phone back towards him.

"I found this on the floor, you should take more care of things dear to you."

"Bastard." Cairo muttered catching the phone and went back to the table.

"I-I can't believe he c-c-called me a b-b-b-bitch!" Jazmine cried into Cindy's shoulder.

"Me either, I'm sorry. But you know he had his reasons." Cindy rubbed her best friend's back. "You've really been treatin' him like dirt."

"And you don't think he deserved a taste of his own medicine?" Jazmine's words sound muffled due to her head being dug into Cindy's shoulder.

"Don't worry about him." Cairo then pulled Jazmine off of Cindy and embraced the mulatto into a deep hug. "Forget him, he doesn't know how to treat a woman the right way."

"Okay." she said softly, enjoying the warmth of Cairo's body.

Cindy sighed as she saw the sight; however her love interest, Caesar definitely didn't like the sight one bit.

After school in the parking lot…

Huey, Caesar and Cindy all stood in the parking lot waiting for Riley to get out of detention.

"That's crazy." Caesar began. "They are now an actual couple."

"Don't remind me." Huey said with his head hanging down.

"There's no way that is Huey Freeman with his head hanging down!" a gentle voice caught Huey's attention. "How you gonna catch up with your head hanging down,
what you see staring at the ground?"

Huey lifted his head up and saw a perky Sunshine Jones beaming at him. It was like she was just glowing with joy, which only caused Huey to feel more down than before.

"How the hell can you always be so damn cheerful?" Huey asked.

"I dunno, maybe it has something to do with my name?" Sunshine shrugged her shoulders. "No but seriously, I guess I can just always tossed away the bad and replace it with good."

"Hey Sunny, have you seen Riley?" Cindy asked looking at her watch. "Detention has been out for a couple of minutes."

"Nope, last time I saw him was before he went into the detention room."

"This dude needs to hurry up; we gotta get back to Huey's house so we can begin to plot the break-up!" Caesar pointed his index finger into the sky.

"Plot? Break-up? Am I missing something?" Sunshine asked.

"Damn, by now I thought the whole school would know but Jazmine and Cairo are dating." Huey said with no emotion.

"Oh no! That's why you're so sad!" Sunshine then bear hugged Huey and twirled him around. "Is there anything I can do to brighten your dark day?!"

"First off, you can put me down." Huey commanded. "Then after that can you walk home with Riley. As this big mouth over here exclaimed, I've got a lot of work to do."

"Wait a second, why would you break them up? If that's who Jazmine wants to be with, you should be happy regardless."

"Sunshine, I know for a damn fact that Cairo doesn't wanna be with Jazmine. He told me the other day he was just doing all of this to get revenge off of me."

"Huey, you my boy and all but today…when Cairo and Jazmine were hugging each other I saw this gleam in Cairo's eye. It's the gleam of love, man. He's actually fallin' for her now."

"That's even worse then, since he's got a girl back home."

"WHAT?!" Sunshine's voice boomed. "HOW DARE HE PLAY WITH TWO GIRLS' HEARTS! PLEASE GO WITH YOUR PLAN IMMEDIATELY. PUT THAT WORM IN THE DIRT!"

"Sunny, I know we're outside and all…but please use your inside voice." Cindy patted Sunshine on the back, hard.

"Okay!" Sunshine gushed, causing Cindy to shake her head.

Later that night…

Huey and Caesar sat on top of the hill overlooking the city of Woodcrest. The lights brighten the darken city giving it a beautiful look, especially from above. Huey stared down at the city and then his phone. Caesar, as usual was listening to his iPod and jamming to Brooklyn Girls by Charles Hamilton.

"NOW I AIN'T GOT NO PROBLEMS WITH GIRLS OUT IN HARLEM!" Caesar sang completely off tune.

"Nigga hush!" Huey barked as he punched his friend in the shoulder. "I'm bout to call up Syria again!"

This would be his fourth time calling Chi-Town resident and from the sounds of the constant ringing meant this would be another failure. However on the fifth ring, someone answered.

"Damn nigga, even Cairo don't call me this much in a day." Syria sucked her teeth.

"That's because he's too busy being with his new girlfriend."

"Oh Lord, here we go wit da lies again." Syria yawned. "I mean can we cut the bullshit?"

"Listen to me." Huey said firmly. "I know you love Cairo but he obviously can't feel the same way.

"From the tone of your voice, I want to believe you but my Cairo wouldn't dare do such a thing." Syria's voice came out softer than usual. "Do you have proof? Remember you told me next time you'd call you would have some."

"I do, let me just find it." Huey then pulled his phone away from his face and began searching for the voice SMS.

After fiddling through his phone for more than thirty seconds, Syria cleared her throat signaling that her patience was running low. Huey cussed under his breath after he realized the message was nowhere to be found on his phone.

"And the survey says…" Syria's aggravated tone transmitted through the phone.

"Wait!" Huey shouted, still frantically searching for the sound clip.

"C'mon now, I'm tryin' to braid mah homegurl's hair."

"Okay, I found it! Listen to this and tell me that your so called man is being faithful to you and only you!" Huey smiled from ear to ear as he pressed play to start the SMS.

"Yes, Jazmine Dubois is my girlfriend now and not yours!" Cairo's recorded voice cackled.

Syria's heart stopped beating as she heard those ten devastating words. With one simple blink, a couple of tears slid down her dark chocolate cheeks. She sniffled and then blew her nose with a tissue.

"I'm sorry." Huey said. "But I can help you, help you get revenge."

"I don't believe it…" she softly wailed. "You made this up somehow."

"Syria, let's be real now. You know that's Cairo's voice. It's like I said I'm sorry he's doing this to you. But if you listen to me, we can make him pay."

"I mean what can we do?"

"Well I was thinking you could be my date for the homecoming dance we are having next week." Huey explained. "It's this Friday, you might enjoy it actually. We are going to have Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

"CRS?" Syria's voice changed from sad to happy in a heartbeat. "Child Rebel Soldiers will be playin' a concert at your school?"

"Indeed." Huey started. "Now if you come as my date, you can confront Cairo, meanwhile I can win back my best friend."

"Sounds like you really this Jazmine girl, huh?"

"I think I love her."

"You think? Love is something you know. Love is like a fact…" Syria declared.

"Well if love is a fact then I must love Jazmine." Huey said with confidence.

"So if you love her, why you wanna take me as a date? To make her jealous?"

"Nah, I won't stoop to Cairo's level. Since you don't go to my school they won't allow you in unless you were invited by a student of WHS."

"Oh." Syria smacked her forehead. "Cuz I was gonna say you sound cute and all but deep down I'm still gonna have feelings for that boy for a long long time."

"Understandable."

"Well I've gotta get back to braidin' my gurl's hair, so gimme a call tomorrow and we can strategically plan how we are going to make Friday happen."

"Alright, thanks for helping me out with this, Syria." Huey thanked her.

"No, thank you for exposing me to the truth."

"Not a problem, talk to you tomorrow."

"Bye." Syria hung up her line.

Huey snapped his phone shut and then did an uppercut in the air out of happiness. In less than five days, Cairo was going to be exposed for what he truly was. Caesar who was still jamming to Charles Hamilton noticed his friend's actions and pulled off his ear buds to hear the outcome.

"So…" Caesar began.

"Syria's on our side." Huey grinned.

"That's what's up man!" Caesar pounded fists with Huey. "We get to crush that scum into the dirt!"

Meanwhile at Duey's Grandmother's House…

Cairo was currently sweating bullets as he continued to land vigorous punches on his black punching bag. Duey was observing from a distance, while reading a book of some sort.

"Whatcha readin'?" Cairo noticed the small purple book from the corner of his eye.

"It's actually a book about the technique you use." Duey then showed Cairo the cover.

"White Lotus Kung Fu For Dummies" Cairo read the cover of the book. "Wow, why you readin' this?"

"Because my brother, you know Huey is eventually going to fight you."

"Especially since I've got Jazmine under my wing now." Cairo's signature smile showcased all thirty-two teeth. "Speaking of which…I think I might wanna stay here."

"What? We are suppose to leave after this little dance and go back to Chicago."

"You really think in a couple of days, Jazmine will lose ALL of her feelings for Freeman. Plus, I hate to say this but I think I'm falling for the girl."

"What about Syria Heyward? If she ever found out this she'd have your rear end on a plate." Duey adjusted his small frames.

"I could leave her and stay here with Jazmine. Unlike Heyward, Dubois is actually a sweet girl and she's hella fine."

"Don't play with fire, you'll get burned." Duey said in a sing-song tune.

The Chicago native just laughed at his friend's comment and continued assaulting the punching bag. Duey looked on and shook his head. Deep down he had a feeling that this plan was going to backfire. Now instead of them going back to Chicago, it looked like they were going to seriously become permanent residences of Woodcrest. All over a girl that was being brainwashed by Cairo.

The next morning in English IV…

The class currently was taken turns reading a short story from their literature books. Jazmine was lost in her own little world as she doodled small pictures of Cairo and herself holding hands, barely keeping up with the text. Huey, who was right behind her saw the drawings and felt his blood begin to boil. The revolutionary kept his cool simply remember that on Friday, this would all be over.

"Ms. Dubois!" Mr. Gaston exclaimed, shaking the mulatto out of her daydream. "Could you please read where Julie left off."

"Uh…" Jazmine panicked as she noticed her book wasn't even open!

She turned around to see what page number Huey's book was on but he had his hand over the page number intentionally. Jazmine gritted her teeth as she saw Huey's revengeful smile.

"Can you PLEASE tell me what page we are on?" she whispered rudely under her breath.

Huey just looked into her sparkling emerald green eyes and ignored her request for assistance. A small vein popped into the mixed beauty as frustration took over her emotions.

"Ms Dubois, we don't have all day." Mr. Gaston's foot tapped impatiently on the tiled floor.

All students of Mr. Gaston's class knew if they weren't keeping up with his lectures that they would be dismissed early from the class. Even though leaving that hellish forty-five lecture sound like paradise, if you're booted from the class early you have to make up the lesson after school the same exact day.

"Huey, any other time I ask for the page number you help…" she whispered.

"Ask Cairo." Huey's icy tone made the temperature drop as well as the hopes of Jazmine staying in the classroom.

"Bastard." she mumbled under her breath, then glanced towards her teacher who already pointed to the door.

Jazmine packed her materials up and proceeded to the lone exit of the classroom. Before she opened the door to leave, she stuck both of Riley's favorite fingers up and Huey and then stormed out. The revolutionary just shook his head and went back to reading his own text.

Later that day…

The sun shined down on the students who were currently doing four laps around the track. Everyone had on a white t-shirt with green and gold shorts. Jazmine and Cindy jogged beside each other as the mulatto began to vent her feelings out.

"Huey's such an asshole!"

"What's new?" Cindy laughed as she wiped some sweat from her brow.

"No, I mean seriously! Like today in English he didn't help me out like he usually does."

"And that makes him an asshole?"

"Well he use to always have my back!"

"Maybe because I dunno Jazmine…" Cindy shrugged her shoulders before she started speaking again. "you been treatin' him like trash?"

"I know I have but still-"

"You expect him to still sugarcoat you? This is Huey Freeman we talkin' about here."

"He's just jealous because I've Cairo in my life instead of him." Jazmine smirked.

Cindy shook her head and just looked forward as the two continued to jog. Meanwhile out in the bleachers, Caesar and Riley, who had already finished their laps, were watching the rest of the class.

"Damn Jazmine is lookin' fine wit her hair all straight and shit!" Riley said, admiring Jazmine's hair, even though it was currently tied into a messy bun.

"She's doing it cuz Cairo likes it that way." Caesar sucked his teeth. "Plus, I don't think you should be lookin' at Jazzy like that. Huey and Sunshine would tear you to shreds."

"Whatever, nigga."

Back on the track, Cindy and Jazmine were on their final lap and the mulatto started to slow down her pace. The blonde noticed this and slowed down as well.

"What's wrong?" Cindy asked.

"I just got a text from Cairo." Jazmine answered. "Oh wow! WOW! WOW! WOW! WOOOOOW!"

"What what what?"

"He wants to have a moonlight picnic on the hill tonight!" Jazmine gushed.

Cindy turned her head away from Jazmine to stick her tongue out. After making a sour face, she turned back to her mixed best friend and gave her a smile of congratulations.

"See, could Freeman ever think of something that sweet?"

"You wouldn't know unless you gave him a chance."

"He had seven years, it's too late now." Jazmine rolled her eyes. "Well tonight I might get my first kiss!"

"Whoa whoa whoa…slow down homegurl." Cindy wrapped her arm around her friend's shoulder. "You've only known Cairo for a couple of days…"

"Yeah, you've got a point…but this is a new Jazzy!"

'Well this new Jazzy definitely ain't as bright as the original…' Cindy thought in her head.

Later that night…

Jazmine looked at her Hello Kitty digital clock and saw the three digits she wanted to see. 9 o' clock, it was time for her date on the hill. Stepping back to look in the mirror, she definitely felt like she was dressed to impress. Once again her usually untamed hair was perfectly straightened to flow down her shoulders. Her upper as well as her lower half was being clothed by a tight small pink dress that stopped at mid thigh. Knowing both her parents would throw a fit, she had on white tights under the dress. Also, to cover up the revealing top part of her dress, she had on a small white hoody. Giving herself a peace sign in the mirror, she exited her room to head towards the front door on the ground floor. As soon as she reached the family room, Sarah and Tom were both on their laptops paying bills.

"Mom and Dad, I'm about to go out with Cairo, see ya later!" she said reaching for the doorknob.

Tom looked up from the screen and felt his eyes nearly remove themselves from the sockets. Sarah also glanced up and shut her laptop down as she saw what her only daughter had on.

"And where do you think you're going looking like that missy?" Sarah asked.

"Out to dinner." Jazmine squeaked.

"Not dressed like some…some…HO!" Tom spat out.

"TOM! WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT TO JAZMINE?!" Sarah yelled at her husband.

"DO YOU SEE WHAT SHE HAS ON? WEARING A DRESS ON THE FIRST DATE IS LIKE PRACTICALLY ASKING TO GET ANALLY RAPED!"

"TOM, SHUT UP WITH THE ANAL CRAP! SHE'S NOT GOING TO GET RAPED!"

"Yeah, Daddy I'm not going to get raped. Cairo's too much of a sweetheart to do ANYTHING to hurt me." Jazmine said cheerfully.

"Jazmine, even though Cairo seems like a really nice guy…that doesn't mean he wouldn't do anything to hurt you." Sarah's once angry tone turned into a caring tone. "I don't think you should go out with him tonight. First off, you didn't even ask us, plus you have school in the morning."

"When I use to have study dates with the gang or wanted to hang out with my friends you guys didn't mind if I just went without asking." Jazmine counterclaimed.

"Well honey, we've known Caesar, Cindy, Huey, Riley and Sunshine for a long time now. We've only known Cairo for three days." Tom stated. "Bottomline is you're not going nowhere with him tonight. Just wait to your homecoming game to hang out with him. I'll feel better knowing Huey and the others will be around."

"Speaking of Huey, I still don't understand why you're not going to the game with him." Sarah scratched her nose.

Jazmine's only response was her storming back up to her bedroom, slamming the door and locking it. As soon she completed those tasks, she did a belly flop into her bed and began to cry. As she wailed tons of tears, she couldn't even figure why she was crying. Suddenly her phone started ringing and by the sound of the ringtone it could have only been one person. Quickly grabbing a tissue to blow her nose, the mulatto picked her phone.

"Hello…" she sniffled.

"Have you been cryin'?" the caller asked.

"A little bit…" Jazmine answered.

"For what?" the caring tone of the caller caused Jazmine's heart to flutter.

"My parents won't let me go out tonight to come see you." she whined. "But when they go to sleep which is usually around eleven, we can do this, okay?"

"Alright, I'll come and pick you up. Don't want you walkin' that time of the night."

"Okay, Cairo!" she croaked.

"Stop crying, okay? Everything's gonna be alright." Cairo reassured his woman.

"Okay, bye."

"Peace." he then blew a kiss through the phone.

As both lines went dead, Jazmine began to cry again. Why wouldn't the waterworks stop? The only person that can answer that is Jazmine herself.

Looks like the Moonlight Picnic has now become the Midnight Moonlight Picnic. As time continues to progress and bring Friday closer, will Cairo seal himself into Jazmine's heart forever? Find out in Chapter 8: Lost Innocence (My REAL First Kiss)
