Chapter Seven: Daddy's Not in Slytherin?

Sarah brought Lily to platform 9 and ¾ September first. Severus was off at Hogwarts - preparing for the feast.

"Now, Dear, remember, don't make enemies with the wrong people."

"I understand, Mum," Lily responded, straightening out her shirt nervously. "What if I get made fun of at Hogwarts, though? What if people don't like me?" Lily's blue eyes filled with terror.

"Lily, Dear, there's nothing for them to dislike. You're a very charming and beautiful girl. Besides, if people are mean to you, you can get your scary daddy to harm them. That's how he scared away my ex," Sarah smiled warmly at the thought - even though she had been harmed badly then.

Lily smiled at her. "And you'll be at Hogwarts too?"

"Of course. Right after your train picks you up, I'm going to use Floo Powder to arrive and I will see you at the the Feast, and during your Sorting."

"Pinky promise?"

"Pinky promise, Lily."

Lily took her mother's pinky before she boarded the train. She skipped, pushing her stuff, searching for an empty compartment so she could start reading some of her school books. She stopped short when she reached a compartment. Inside were two boys - one with red hair, blue eyes, and freckles, and the other had messy black hair and stunning green eyes. However, the boy also had a lightning bolt scar. Lily's hand instantly flew to her own forehead - where her own scar lay. It was an odd curve followed by a straight line - it looked a little like half a heart. She flung the door open and sat next to the redhaired boy.

"We told yer friend," he sighed, mouth full of food. "We don't have that stupid toad!"

"What toad?"she inquired, scooting away from him, crinkling her nose at his messiness. "I just need a compartment to stay at. M'names Lily."

"Lily?" the boy with the lightning scar asked. "That was my mum's name."

"You're Harry Potter," Lily took in.

"And I'm Ronald Weasley," the redhead told her, spitting food out onto her face. Lily wiped it away and scooted over until she nearly slipped off the seat, but Harry was quick. He stood and grabbed her arm gently, right before she fell on her bum.

"Thanks," Lily murmured, brushing herself off. She sat next to Harry.

Ron gave a slight scowl. "So what's your surname, Lily?" Ron asked.

"Snape," Lily responded, taking in the passing scenery from the window.

It was Ron's turn to wrinkle his nose. "You're related to that greasy git?"

"That's not polite," Lily snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. "Someone ought to teach you some manners, Roland Wesley."

"It's Ronald Weasley," he corrected.

"Oh, I know." Lily responded, smirking slightly.

"Then why did you say Roland Wesley?"

"Because," Lily replied, "you weren't nice to my father."

"And your father isn't nice to my family, case closed."

Lily rolled her eyes.

Harry cleared his throat and pointed to Lily's scar. "How'd you get that?" he asked curiously.

"I was in some kind of accident with my mum when I was young. She said a man attacked her while I was in the room."

"That's horrible," Harry responded.

"And you got yours from Vold-"

"Oi!" Ron exclaimed. "You just don't go around, slinging the word!"

"It's not a word, it's a name," Lily corrected. "And frankly, I don't understand why people are so afraid of the name. It's just a name."

"I understand," Harry agreed sincerely.

"What the bloody hell is wrong with you two? Saying You-Know-Who's name is bad!"

"As Dumbledore says," Lily started, "fear in the name results in fear in the object itself."

"You've met Dumbledore?" Harry asked in astonishment.

"Of course. I practically live at Hogwarts. This isn't exactly my first year here."

"Why?" Harry asked.

"Professor Snape, dummy," Lily teased.

Harry scowled at her, but the three made quick friends. Soon enough, a girl with bushy brown hair bursted into the compartment. "You all should get ready soon - I just spoke to the conductor. We're nearly there."

Lily reached for her school robe but the girl cleared her throat. "It's not appropriate for girls and boys to change in the same compartment."

"I'm just putting my robe over my clothes. I don't see a problem with it."

The girl opened her mouth as if to say something, but Lily cut her off.

"Do not try to tell me how to live my life."

Hermione closed her mouth and turned on her heel, leaving the compartment. Lily couldn't help but feel guilty, but she brushed it off.

The first year students all murmured with excitement as the boats crossed the lake to the grand castle-like building of Hogwarts. They began discussing houses trying to figure out which would be the best fit for them. Lily heard the bossy, bushy haired girl speaking to a portly first year - speaking about Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. The more Lily heard about her, the more Lily thought she was just a show-off. She didn't want to be in the same house as this "Hermione Granger".

The first years filed into the Great Hall and stopped chatting immediately, and the Sorting was started soon. "Granger, Hermione," was placed in Gryffindor and "Potter, Harry," was also in Gryffindor. The further Professor McGonagall went down the list, the more a knot tied in Lily's stomach. She worried about her house and the other people who would join her. She was so busy fretting over it, her name had to be called twice.

"Snape, Lily," McGonagall announced, looking straight at Lily this time.

"Oh, right!" Lily exclaimed. "I'm really sorry," she muttered as she rushed up to the stool. She was fidgeting as the professor placed the hat on Lily's straight hair.

"Hm..," the hat thought. "Which house would best fit you? Not Hufflepuff...or Slytherin. You have the brains of a Ravenclaw...yet the courage of a Gryffindor.."

"Please, Mr. Sorting Hat, sir. I would like to be in Slytherin," Lily murmured softly, "like my father."

"Lily, your father wasn't in Slytherin."

"That's...that's a lie. Of course he was, he had to have been...he's Head of Slytherin House…"

"Oh, sweet ignorant child. Is it your wish to be placed in Slytherin?"

"It is my wish," Lily responded.

"SLYTHERIN!"

Lily smiled like a child that was given twenty Galleons and dumped off at Honeydukes. She took off the hat and rushed down to the Slytherin table and set herself besides none other than Draco Malfoy.
