Chapter 7: Halloween
Edward Cullen
I stared at the front door of the dorms as it closed behind her. And then before I knew it, I parked my car and was running into the building.
I caught sight of her just as she punched a button in the elevator.
"Bella!" I called out.
I saw her spin around and catch sight of me moving towards her. Her face held a shock of surprise, mixed with the slightest hint of amusement.
I laughed quietly to myself before I turned and jogged up the stairs to the fifth floor.
I arrived moments before she did.
"Hey," she said as she stepped out of the elevator.
"Hey, I um… I…" I scrambled for an excuse as to why I had chased her into the dorms. "I don't have your number and you don't have mine. I figured you should have it, you know, in case you call in sick or something."
"Yeah, sure," she said with a nod.
I pulled out my phone and saved her number as she read it out to me, and then I text her mine. It was a stupid excuse and I knew that, but I didn't know what else to say.
Just as I was about to say goodbye, I heard a shuffling coming from up the stairs.
And then my smile faded when I caught sight of Jessica and Lauren when they reached the landing.
"Edward," Jessica said with wide eyes.
"Jess," I responded.
I watched her gaze flicker between Bella and I. I already knew what it looked like.
"What's going on?" Jessica asked as she eyed Bella.
I kept my eyes averted from Bella while I answered.
"Actually," I said. "I was getting Bella's phone number. She just got a job at the Den."
"Your mother's bookstore?" Jessica asked in confusion.
"Yeah. So, I thought it would be a good idea if we exchanged numbers."
I kept my tone soft and low, as if the conversation was meant for Jessica only.
But from the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of Lauren shaking her head at me.
"Where are you off to, babe?" I asked. "I was about to come up and see you."
"Lauren wanted to go get a drink," Jessica said as she gestured to Lauren with her thumb.
My gaze flickered over Jessica's outfit for the first time. Sure enough, she was dressed in a tight short dress and her hair was did up in many thick curls.
"Well, I'm gonna go now," Bella interrupted with a bored tone.
She shot me long glance before she turned to Jessica and Lauren.
"Night," Bella said. And then she turned and left down the hall.
"Why didn't you tell me your mother was thinking about hiring Bella Swan?" Jessica asked, as soon as Bella was out of earshot.
I shrugged as I reached out a hand towards Jessica's waist.
"Are you sure you wanna go out tonight?" I asked. "Lauren doesn't need your company does she?"
I pulled Jessica into my arms and rubbed my lips against her small neck.
"Jessica!" Lauren complained. "You promised!"
I laughed.
"Its alright," I said. "Do you guys need a ride somewhere?"
The rest of the week passed fairly quickly. Halloween was approaching, which meant I was spending all of my free time doing beer runs and cleaning the house. Jessica was doing me a huge favor by trying to find a costume for her and I to wear. She was set on having a couple's costume, so I gave her some cash and let her go shop on her own. After all, shopping was the last thing I wanted to do.
"What are you gonna be for Halloween?" I asked Bella.
A large order of cookbooks had just arrived, so Bella and I stood shuffling around in the cooking aisle trying to arrange the large load of books.
"I don't know," Bella answered. "Peter Pan?"
I laughed. "Are you serious?"
"Why not?"
"I don't know. It just seems…"
"Its not sexy enough?"
I turned to see Bella watching me quizzically. This pushed me over the edge and I broke out into a loud guffaw.
"Okay, laughing boy," she giggled. "What are you going to be?"
"No idea."
"But it's your party."
"Jessica is shopping for us. I have too much shit to do. I have baseball, homework, work, aaand I have to clean the fucking house."
"What about Tyler and Mike?" Bella asked.
"What about them?"
"Are they helping out?"
"Yeah… But we're three guys. It takes longer than a day to clean up our messes."
Bella grimaced, which made me laugh again.
"I bet Jessica is gonna get you something cheesy," Bella laughed. "Like… doctor and nurse or… "
"Batman and Catwoman?" I offered.
"Exactly! Well, actually… that would be kind of cool."
I laughed. "Well, it beats being Peter Pan and Tinkerbell," I said with a wink.
"Very funny."
When seven-thirty rolled around, I took off for a few minutes to go around the corner to buy sandwiches from the Brothers K so that Bella and I wouldn't have to leave the bookstore unattended during our break.
"What did you get me?" Bella asked excitedly when I walked in with a heavy paper bag.
"A few things," I answered.
She laughed.
We ended up splitting her New York Bagel sandwich and my roast beef. Along with our side of fries.
"I think the Brothers K is my new favorite place," Bella said before shoving a fry into her mouth.
I chuckled. "Its pretty damn good."
"I could live off their food."
"Na. If you've been eating it as long as I have, you wouldn't be saying that."
Bella shrugged.
"So how's Royce?" I asked after a moment of silence.
Bella met my gaze before giving me another shrug.
"Not good?" I pressed.
"He's alright I guess."
I nodded. "Is he still coming to the party?"
"Yeah… but I don't think he's gonna dress up."
"Why not?"
"I think he feels too old or something."
"You're never too old to dress up for Halloween," I argued.
She nodded.
"How old is he anyway?"
"Twenty-six."
I didn't know what I was expecting, but I didn't expect Royce to be that old. I mean, twenty-six really isn't old at all… but when I considered Bella and an age appropriate boyfriend, twenty-six sure as hell wasn't it.
"Isn't he a little…" But I cut myself short. It wasn't my place to say anything. It wasn't my business.
"That's what Rose keeps saying."
"What do we know," I shrugged.
"I guess you don't know."
I glanced up to see Bella rip a fry to pieces. She looked upset.
"Well, its good he's coming. I want to meet him."
Bella smirked. "Yeah, it'll be fun."
Saturday night came way too soon and I found myself standing in my bathroom, trying on the cowboy costume Jessica bought me for Halloween.
"Jess!" I called out as I tried on the black vest.
The entire costume was complete with a vest, a pocket watch, a coat, a bandana, a cowboy hat and a gun in a holster. All black.
"Jessica!" I called again.
"What's up, baby?" She asked as she walked in.
She was dressed as a sexy Indian, complete with beads and a feather in her hair.
"Jess, I don't think I should wear the coat," I said before I shrugged on the knee length material.
She studied me for a moment. Beneath the vest, I had on a white collared shirt and I completed the outfit with a pair of dark jeans and black boots.
"You look hot!" Jessica exclaimed. "Wear the coat. It looks amazing."
I laughed and shook my head. I felt like an idiot.
The start of the night passed effortlessly. Mike and Tyler, who were dressed up as a zombie and Dracula, made an effort to buy some chips and sodas for people who wouldn't be drinking, but as soon as our friends and my teammates from both leagues, and some guys from school arrived, the alcohol was quickly running out.
The music was loud and the entire apartment was packed with guests dancing and singing along to the latest pop song.
"Hey," Jessica said to me. "Bella and her date are here."
I glanced up from my shot of tequila to see Bella walk in, closely followed by a tall man dressed in a black suit and masquerade mask. He looked like a douche.
Bella on the other hand looked amazing in what looked to be a Robin Hood ensemble.
She was wearing a short white dress, which flared out around her hips. Around her bodice was a green sewn up vest that flared out around her skirt. And then on her head was a brown hood that draped over her shoulders.
Behind Bella were Rosalie and Emmett. I smiled and gave them a wave.
Bella caught my eye as soon as she approached the kitchen, so I took Jessica's hand and steered her towards our guests.
"Hey," I said to Bella before offering her a quick one-armed hug.
And then I turned to Royce. His face was stern as he watched me hug his date, but I didn't back down. Instead, I stepped towards him and held out my hand.
"I'm Edward Cullen," I said before I gripped Royce's hand in a firm shake.
"Royce King," he responded.
I gave him a nod before gesturing towards Jessica.
"This is my girlfriend, Jessica," I said. "Would you guys like a drink? There's beer in the coolers and in the fridge. Help yourselves."
"So I guess you're gonna let me drink after all," Bella said with a smirk.
I returned her smile and gave her a nod.
"This is my house, my roof. I wont tell if you don't," I teased.
She laughed before taking Royce's hand and leading him towards a cooler.
As the night went on, I ended up losing my coat, along with the bandana when I went with Jessica to dance in the living room. We set up the place pretty well. There were some smoke machines and flickering strobe lights with bats hanging from the ceilings. But even through the mist and fog, I could still make out the faces around me.
It wasn't until well into midnight that I saw Bella in the corner arguing with her date.
She looked drunk and upset as she gestured towards the door and again towards the people around her. I felt the sudden urge to protect her from Royce.
"Babe," I said into Jessica's ear. "I'll be right back."
Jessica nodded to me before reaching for Lauren's hand.
I moved carefully through the crowd towards Bella and was just able to make out the end of her conversation before Royce pulled away from her and marched out of my apartment.
"Hey," I said when I reached for Bella's shoulder.
She spun around to face me. Her face was contorted in anger and I could see the glistening streaks of tears on her cheeks.
I frowned.
"There's a bathroom in my room," I offered.
She gave me a gentle nod before following me back through the crowd and into the hallway.
"You cleaned," Bella said softly once we entered my room.
I laughed. "Hardly."
"It looks nice."
I moved aside to let her pass into the bathroom. She flicked the light on but didn't shut the door behind her.
I watched her move towards the mirror. The black eye makeup she wore had run a bit down her cheeks, but she cleaned it up easily before pushing her hair out of her face. Even with rosy cheeks and pink nose, she looked… well, perfect.
And then her gaze flickered to me in the mirror.
I didn't look away as I leaned against the doorframe, watching her.
"Are you having fun?" she asked.
"Yeah," I answered honestly. "It's going good so far. Or… it was."
She smirked.
"What happened?"
"Royce is an asshole," she said with a shake of her head. "He gets so jealous, you know? I mean, if a guy talks to me, he gets all bent out of shape. That's why we don't really go out."
"You don't go out much?" I asked.
"No. Cause if we do, he gets pissed off whenever someone looks at me a certain way."
"He must think you're very beautiful," I murmured.
"He thinks I'm sexy…" she responded defiantly.
"You're aware of how he sees you?" I asked confused.
"The way most guys see me," she corrected.
I frowned.
"I'm used to guys making a pass at me. Men always seem to wonder."
"Wonder what?" I hedged.
"If I'm worth it… If I'm something special."
I watched as Bella's gaze traveled over me before she finally turned to face me.
"I'm gonna blow this, aren't I?" she said with a slightly amused expression.
"Blow what?"
"Our friendship?"
Again, her eyes roamed over the length of me before she finally stepped forward.
"Are you aware of the effect you have on women?" she asked.
I swallowed and took a step back. This was a side of Bella I had never seen. And even though I was drunk and even though her words were making me feel things I shouldn't be feeling, I knew it was wrong.
"I'm afraid I'll blow our friendship by flirting with you. By leading you on," she continued. "I tend to get myself into trouble that way."
"Is that why Royce left?" I asked hesitantly. "Because you were flirting with someone else."
Bella shook her head and looked away. "I've had too much to drink," she laughed. "Let's go back to the party."
Isabella Swan
I pushed passed Edward and headed back out towards the crowd of people.
I gazed around for a moment, hoping to find Rosalie so that I could grab her and ask her to take me home. Instead I found her on the living room couch, making out with Emmett. Her new boyfriend.
"Fuck," I hissed.
"Hey Bella," came Tyler's voice from beside me.
I rolled my eyes. He was the reason why Royce had left me today.
"Hey Tyler," I mimicked his sly expression.
He chuckled before handing me a full cup of beer.
I took it.
And then he held up a blunt between his thumb and forefinger.
He didn't need to ask me twice.
I leaned forward and placed my lips to his fingers, inhaling the skunky smoke deep into my lungs.
I held it for a moment before blowing it out towards the ceiling.
I stood with Tyler for a while, taking a few drags from his blunt here and there until he finally passed it to some guy standing a foot behind him.
"Wanna go dance?" Tyler asked me.
I felt high and kind of sleepy, so I knew that if I danced I'd make a huge full out of myself. I was already uncoordinated when I was sober.
"Let's go sit over there." I pointed towards the empty love seat by Rosalie and Emmett.
Tyler gave a nod of approval and followed after me.
Once we were sitting, Tyler made an effort to massage my shoulders while whispering sweet things about how I looked in my ear. I let him. I wanted the attention and the company. And Tyler was nice and very handsome.
From across the room I caught sight of Edward standing next to Jessica. He was watching me, looking both equally pissed off and irritated. I smiled at him.
He looked gorgeous standing there in his cowboy getup. It suited him well. His white shirt was opened around his neck, and I could easily make out muscle definition on his chest. And his hat was a perfect topping on a delicious pile of man.
My attraction towards Edward continued to grow, and that scared me. I didn't want to ruin our friendship over my eager flirtatiousness with him, or my lack of control. There was a line there I couldn't cross. Not with him. I cared about his friendship too much. I didn't want to ruin it by making a pass at him. He had a girlfriend, for fuck's sake.
"I want to kiss you," Tyler whispered into my ear.
My smile widened before I turned my head towards Tyler.
His lips were instantly on mine, sucking and pulling greedily. I gave him my tongue and sucked gently when he forced his into my mouth.
"Mmm…" I moaned.
He tasted like weed and beer and something sweet. Like candy.
I felt his hand drift from my shoulder to my neck… up into my hair and finally down to where he tried to grab my breast.
I pushed his hand away. Even in the fog of my intoxication, I knew I didn't want to be felt up in the middle of a party.
"Bella!" Rosalie shrieked from the couch opposite me.
I pulled my face away and turned to peer at Rosalie through blurry eyes.
"What the fuck happened to Royce?" Rosalie asked in amazement.
I giggled when Tyler's lips nuzzled my neck.
"Fuck him," I slurred, throwing my hand up. "He's an asshole."
"Yeah, fuck Royce!" Tyler said triumphantly. And then his mouth was on me once more.
He pulled my head towards him before forcing my body on top of his. I was only barely aware of my legs being pushed apart before he pulled me onto his lap.
"You look so fucking hot in this outfit, Swan," Tyler said.
My gaze landed on his wet lips and I momentarily memorized the way the strobe lights reflected off of them.
"Let's go to my room." Tyler's voice was thick and raspy.
I shook my head.
"Come on, baby," he urged. And then he placed his hands on my hips, forcing me to grind into his prominent erection.
I knew what he wanted, but I wasn't sure if I wanted it.
Tyler watched as I mulled things over in my head before he leaned forward and licked a path up my neck before sucking hard just beneath my jaw.
I moaned softly from the sensation before jerking against him.
"Fine," I gasped, defeated.
I let Tyler stand me up onto my feet before he led me through the crowd of people, back towards the bedrooms. I passed by Edward and Jessica, but kept my attention away from them and on Tyler's hand, which hung draped over my shoulder.
"Come here," Tyler growled once he pushed us through his bedroom door.
His mouth came crashing down onto mine, where he fondled my tongue while running his hands repeatedly over my breasts, massaging them through the thick fabric of my costume.
His strong hands felt good against me and I welcomed the aggressiveness of his touch.
I fisted my hands into his stupid Dracula cape and pulled him towards his bed, taking the initiative to get the ball rolling.
"Fuck me," I gasped once we collapsed onto his bed.
Tyler's hands were instantly up my skirt, yanking my panties down and off my feet. I groaned and rocked my hips when his needy hand found me, wet and ready. He continued to kiss me as he yanked his jeans down, releasing his dick from its restraints. I found him instantly, and clasped my hand around the head of his penis, getting him ready.
"Do you have a condom?" I asked softly.
"Fuck the condom," he said as he ripped his cape and shirt from his body before gripping my hips and angling me.
"No…" I whined, while tightening my fist. "I want a condom. I want you to cum in me."
Tyler released a strangled groan before he sat up and rushed to his dresser.
Once he slid the condom on, he pulled my legs over his hips before pushing into me in one smooth move.
I yelled out as he filled me. He was thick and long, just how I liked it.
He instantly started up a quick rhythm, keeping one foot on the ground as leverage so that he could pound into me. I stayed on my back and worked my hands over the hard muscle on his stomach, hips and finally his ass.
"Fuuuck…" I groaned when I felt him push my left knee up towards my chest.
I could hear him groaning, savoring the feel, as he grew closer. But I was panting and drunk, so it was hard for me to come close to my climax.
"Don't come," I groaned. "Not until I do."
I pushed him away from me, and forced him to sit so that I could straddle him. I used his shoulders and arms as leverage to force myself up and down on his lap, keeping his face level to mine so that he could suck and rake his teeth against my neck as I picked up the pace.
Edward's face flashed behind my eyelids. His smile, his lips, his hands, his ass in those jeans…
"Oh God," I gasped. I could feel it now.
"Are you getting close?" Tyler asked me.
I gave a weak nod, while letting my fantasies flutter through my mind.
Edward's mouth, his tongue when he licks his lips, his teeth when he smiles or groans at something funny I say…
"Fuck!" I gasped.
His hands, thick and long and hard. Touching me; my breasts, my hips, my thighs, my pussy…
My body was shaking and jerking above Tyler's as he gripped me, forcing me to continue rocking against him as I came.
I felt Tyler reach his as well, moaning into the crook of my neck.
I stayed on top of him, allowing Tyler to hold me against his chest as I came down, gasping and sweating above him.
"Holy shit, Swan," Tyler laughed.
I giggled with him before finally getting up.
"Do you have a bathroom anywhere close?" I asked.
"Just the one outside," Tyler responded while he sat up.
I refrained from cursing as I straightened my dress and ran my fingers through my hair.
I knew it would be fucked up for me to use Edward's bathroom to clean up, but what other choice did I have. The other bathroom was surely being occupied by every guest there.
"I'll be back," I said to Tyler when I reached for his door.
I stepped out of his room and was luckily able to slip into Edward's without being noticed.
I walked quickly to his bathroom, which was left lit up.
I closed the door and did what I could to clean up. My hair was a mess, but looked purposeful. The only real problem was my lips. They were bright red. I splashed some cold water on them and even drank a little to help with my drunkenness. And then I stood up and gave myself one more glance. I looked decent.
I was feeling slightly pleased with myself when I turned to open the door, but all of that went down the shitter when I caught Edward sitting on his bed.
His eyes found me instantly and I could see anger there.
"Hey," I said nervously. "Sorry, I um… needed to use the bathroom, but the other one was full."
He didn't respond.
"I hope you don't mind."
"Are you serious right now?" he snapped.
I glanced around stunned.
"Tyler?" he asked angrily as he got to his feet. "You fucked Tyler?"
I frowned at him. "What?"
"Just because your boyfriend breaks up with you, you have to go and sleep with my best friend?"
"Hey!" I yelled. "Its none of your fucking business what I do, or who I do it with."
"The hell with it. The fuck do I care?" he snapped angrily before turning away from me.
Without thinking, I ran to him and spun him around to face me.
"Why do you care?" I argued. "And why are you acting like a jealous boyfriend all of a sudden?"
His eyes were wounded as he gazed down at me.
"I'm not acting like anything," he said sternly.
"Why does it bother you so much?" I asked, tears now in my eyes. "If there's something you wanna say, man up and say it now."
"Don't flatter yourself, Bella…" he responded.
I stared up at him, feeling like a discarded, slutty, little girl.
I shook my head and pulled away from him.
He must have sensed my despair, because as I made my way to his door, he reached for me and tried to pull me back to him.
"Bella," he said, softy now. "Bella, wait…"
I yanked my arm from his grasp and marched out of his room without another glance behind me.
I didn't see the faces I passed as I made my way towards the front door of the apartment. All I knew was that I needed to get the fuck out of that place.
