Two Weeks Later
"Matthew Derek Shepherd! Get down here right now!" I yelled up the stairs. Whitney was already downstairs and ready to go and so were the twins. Which was not an easy task. We were just waiting on Max who was being painfully slow. Finally Max came running down the stairs. He looked like he was in a bad mood. This was not what I needed today.
"I hate when you use my full name." Max grumbled. I groaned. I hated mornings when Derek got called into work early and it was my responsibility to get the kids to school on time alone.
"Max I really don't have time for you to be cranky this morning." I pleaded. Max sighed and nodded.
"I'm sorry mommy." Max said and wrapped his arms around me in an attempt at a hug. I smiled and readjusted Toby on my hip.
"That's alright buddy. I forgive you. Max can I trust you with something really important?" I asked. Max nodded with big blue eyes.
"Can you carry Gannon out to the car? Whitney can't do it." I asked. Max nodded excitedly. "Be very very careful." I warned. Max nodded and very very gently lifted Gannon out of his bouncy seat. Ten minutes later we were all safely on the way to Max and Whitney's school. After I dropped them off I went over to the hospital. Derek met me in the parking lot and carried Gannon in for me while I grabbed Toby and all my work things.
"How were the kids this morning?" Derek asked as we walked in to the hospital.
"Max had a bit of an attitude earlier but once I offered for him to carry Gannon he wiped the attitude right off." I told him. Derek smiled.
"He's such a great kid." Derek said happily. I smiled.
"He's a little charmer just like his father." I teased. Derek rolled his eyes.
"Please don't start calling him Mini McDreamy." Derek pleaded. I smiled.
"Don't let Meredith or her friends hear you say that. They'll take to it in no time." I teased. Derek rolled his eyes and opened the door to the nursery.
"And the adorable Shepherd's!" The nursery attendant said happily. I smiled.
"Hey Angela." I greeted the young woman.
"How are they this morning?" Angela asked taking Gannon from Derek.
"They've be great." I told her. Angela's friend came over and took Toby.
"So who's getting them today?" Angela asked.
"I'll be back to get them and Whitney and Max." Derek told Angela. She nodded and made Gannon wave to me as we left. Derek and I held hands as we made our way to the surgical floor. My pager went off before we could even check the surgical board. It was Callie. I gave Derek a look and ran off to the oncall room she had paged me from. I got there as soon as I could. She was laying on the bottom bunk holding her stomach and crying.
"Callie what's wrong? Are you in labor?" I asked kneeling down next to her. Callie shook her head.
"It's not contraction like pains." Callie groaned. Her forehead was covered in sweat. I reached for her hand and checked her pulse, it was a little weak but nothing dangerous.
"Can you describe it?" I asked. Callie nodded slowly.
"It's like impossibly bad cramps." Callie explained slowly. I nodded.
"Come on. I need to get you on fluids and pain meds so we can figure this out and get you better before the stress causes you to go into labor." I begged. Callie nodded slowly and got up shakily. I smiled sympathetically and helped her out of the oncall room. I found a wheel chair in the hall way and got her up to the surgical ward as soon as possible. Derek was leaning against the nurse's station talking with Mark. Mark looked over and froze when he saw me pushing Callie.
"What the hell?" Mark asked. "Addison is she in labor?" Mark asked. I shook my head.
"No it's something else. Derek can you get a room set up and call CT. I think it may be an infected gallbladder or Appendicitis." I told Derek. Derek nodded and picked up the desk phone. "Mark will you go get me an IV kit. I'm going to start her on some pain meds." I told Mark. Mark nodded and ran off. "I'm sorry I can't give you the really strong stuff or it will hurt the babies." I told Callie once she was situated on a gurney in the hallway while they set up her room. Mark had just returned with the IV kit and I was about to hook her up. Callie nodded.
"It's okay." She whispered. I smiled.
"We're going to fix you right up don't worry Cal." I promised and stuck the needle in her arm. She grimaced slightly before putting a brave face back on. I hung the bag of pain meds on the rack and played with her hair until Derek ran over.
"The room is ready. They've got her in 154. CT said they were ready as well." Derek informed us. I nodded gratefully.
"Thank you Der." I smiled and helped Callie back into the wheelchair. About an hour or two later Callie's scans came back and we discovered that her gallbladder was infected and needed to be removed. It was a very risky surgery because she was thirty weeks pregnant. I'd have to be in surgery with her while Bailey operated to monitor the twins. They wanted Teddy in there as well in case it became taking on her heart. Being pregnant made a simple surgery a whole lot more complicated. After a while I found myself leaning against the nurse's station outside of Callie's room with Derek just watching her sleep.
"You know it's a good thing you are her doctor or this would be considered stalking." Derek teased. I rolled my eyes and folded my arms across my chest.
"I'm worried about her. Callie has been my best friend for the past eight years. I tell her everything. She gives much better advice than you do." I told him seriously. Derek wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me in close.
"She's going to be okay." Derek assured me.
"It's Seattle Grace Mercy Death Derek, none of us are okay." I told him seriously. Derek grinned and kissed me.
"I love you Addie."
