Imagining Lu Ten's character was the hardest part of this chapter…along with the dialogue with it… I hope this is good enough… In fact, I hope this whole chapter is good enough for a year-long update.
A quick note: in the Avatar World, they do not use the term 'ghost', only 'spirit' when they refer to the dead.
That is all. If you want, you can stick around for review answers and my excuse(s) for not updating at the end of this chapter. Thank you.
Now enjoy. ^^
Chapter Five
Zuko grumbled as he climbed the stoned stairway with Mai, passing by fields of crops, ready to be harvested. Colorful wildflowers bloomed right next to the steps, some of them sprouting between each of the stoned blocks. The sky was a bright, deep blue, with a few clouds drifting lazily across the painted canvas. Mai glanced at her boyfriend, wondering why he was moodier than usual.
"What are you grumbling about now?" Mai asked a little peeved at his mood. Zuko responded with a scowl.
"Why would Lu Ten want to speak to that jerk?" Zuko muttered with venom. His head angled backwards, along with Mai's. The Fire Lord shot a deadly glare at the raven-haired teen who trailed shortly behind them. The teen in question snorted, shooting an equally as deadly glare back.
"It's not like I wanted to come," he spat out defensively. Mai ignored the teen's comment and continued to talk to Zuko. Danny grunted, rolling his sapphire eyes.
Great, I've managed to tick them both off, Danny seethed to himself as he trailed the two. He winced whenever a sudden burst of pain stabbed him, but he shook it of. Why did I even do that stupid prank in the first place?
Earlier that morning…
The brush in Danny's hand stilled a smile crossing against the teen's face as he held up the torn scroll paper.
"Perfect!" he cried out happily. He blew on it a few times and patted it to see if the ink was dry yet. After a couple of minutes of waiting, the ink was completely dried and the teen rolled it up while grabbing a pin as he left his room. "This is gonna be the best prank ever…"
Danny didn't know why he would want to prank Zuko with a 'Kick Me' sign, but hey, he's an impulsive teenager; so what if it's stupid and poorly thought of? He's gonna have a kick out of watching Scarface getting kicked by everyone.
Plus it's a classic prank – one that absolutely cannot go wrong.
The teen wondered down a few hallways in the late morning light, trying to find his one and only target. Finally, he caught site of a group of people following someone around a corner. Danny jogged up to them, hoping that it was Zuko that the mass was following. As Danny neared, he recognized a hair bun with a hairpin with a golden flame. The halfa chuckled as he slinked through the crowd to approach the young Fire Lord from behind.
A long crimson robe fluttered slightly behind Scarface as he walked; too busy talking to the people around him to notice a mischievous teenager dangerously near him. As Danny dug out the pin and scroll, he heard snippets of what they were talking about.
"An Earth kingdom village is complaining about some unruly Fire Nation soldiers that were station there during the war. Two houses were burnt down before Earth benders intervened."
"A report sent from the Northern Water Tribe found some deserters near the North Pole. Shall they get thrown in jail for deserting the army and disobeying your creed?"
"A Fire Nation town has reported spirits causing problems and is begging for the Avatar's help."
Danny paused when he had heard that last comment, but he shook his head as he calmly pinned the piece of paper on the robe. It wasn't his problem, and besides, he's pretty sure that Zuko could handle it; though he vaguely wondered if they meant to say 'ghosts' instead of 'spirits'.
Danny, then, slipped through the crowd and out of it, relieved that Zuko didn't even realized that someone was messing with his clothing, still too busy answering questions from those around him. Danny snickered as he watched at a short distance away.
Danny was patient, waiting for someone to act on what the piece of paper said; however, ten minutes had come and gone before he began to get frustrated.
"Why is it taking forever?" he growled under his breath.
"What are you growling for?" Mai asked, suddenly appearing by the teen's side. Danny ignored her and just continued to stare darkly at the scene in front of him.
"Why is no one reading that piece of paper? Or, rather, why is no one doing what the paper says?" He muttered more to himself than to Mai. The female frowned, she gazed at Zuko's exposed robe and noticed a piece of paper pinned there. She raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Read?" She asked, sounding baffled. "How can anyone read that?" Danny turned to Mai, his face slack with disbelief. "It looks more like something a pigrooster would scratch up. Not something that people could read."
Ignoring the pigrooster comment, Danny asked, "You…can't read it?" Mai gave him a dry look.
"Nope. And obviously no one else can either," she answered. Danny's mouth opened slightly and closed slowly. All of his efforts were wasted!
While Danny felt depressed from the failed prank, Mai turned to look at the paper with scratches on it. Curiosity nipped at her heels from the weird writing on the paper. "What's it supposed to say anyways?" she asked him.
"'Kick Me, I'm the King'," Danny blurted out without thinking. He tensed, realizing that he shouldn't have said that. He glanced at Mai, immediately wincing.
Mai was glaring at him fiercely. Searing anger crashed into the halfa like a punch in the gut. He flashed a nervous smile, hoping to dispel her anger and forgive him for the immature prank.
"What I meant was-"
He didn't even get to finish as a very solid punch slammed into his gut.
Danny blinked, shaking his head. If only he could have known that this culture writes differently from the English alphabet that he had used all of his life – then again – he should've already known this. He's seen the Asian characters as they drip down the artworks or scrolls that littered the palace. He let out a sigh. Oh well, what's done is done. He told silently to himself as he copied the couple's movements ahead of him. Of course Mai had to tell Zuko what Danny had tried to do; thus why the Fire Lord was peeved at him at the moment. The halfa smirked. But I'll get him somehow.
After a few minutes, a wall of stone rose beside them; and soon, they rounded a sharp bend when their destination appeared.
The shrine itself reminded Danny of those Japanese shrines that Sam had showed him while browsing on the internet. The building was built between a canyon, surrounding by trees and rocks. Danny could easily hear the faded roar of water thundering from deep inside of the gigantic crevice. The shrine, itself, was painted with brightly saturated red and yellows, making it stand out from the forestry. Wooden carved dragons stood at the corners of the roof. There were only a couple of windows, but there was paper covering over them so no one could peek inside. A porch surrounded the building like a tutu, wooden steps led up to the main doors – which were decorated with warm colors of the sun.
Danny gulped, trying to shove his nervousness away as they approached the shrine. He was confused as to why he was nervous and yet he feels so excited. …Why did he felt suddenly excited and nervous?
The door slid open, revealing a man wearing a long brick-colored robe with a longer white one underneath. His head was shaved, budding hairs slowly growing back.
"Welcome, Fire Lord Zuko," said the man in a baritone voice. He bowed deeply at the young Lord. "And you too Lady Mai." Another bow before his eyes rested on Danny. "And also you, company of the Fire Lord and Lady." He also bowed to Danny, who looked a bit bewildered at the man.
"Right this way," the priest said, leading them into the shrine. "The head priest is waiting for your arrival."
The group of teens walked through the shrine's wooden hallways, passing by several of rooms that were either completely empty or filled with so much burning incense that Danny would violently sneeze each time a sliding door would open.
The priest paused and stood next to a doorway that was wide open for the group of teens. He bowed to them as they passed by through the threshold of the sliding doors. Danny nearly jumped out of his skin when the priest slid the door shut behind them.
"Ah, Fire Lord Zuko, it's a pleasure meeting you again," said a man wearing the same color of robes except with golden trim that highlighted the robe. He also wore a tall golden hat. He inclined his head, Zuko doing the same. "And fair Mai, again, a pleasure." Then his weary eyes moved onto the only person clothed in Water Tribe clothing.
"And you must be the lad that Lu Ten mentioned about." It wasn't a question. "A pleasure to meet you also," he said, inclining his head towards Danny, who returned the gesture.
"Who's Lu Ten?" Danny immediately asked after the bow. It explained why Zuko didn't want to bring him to the shrine, but apparently was forced to.
The high priest opened his mouth to speak, but Zuko beat him to it.
"Lu Ten was my Uncle's son," the Fire Lord said mellow. Danny nodded; then an eyebrow rose in confusion.
"Was?" he echoed quizzly before realization jerked him. "You mean he's a ghost?!"
Immediately, a strange look appeared simultaneously on the priest, Zuko, and Mai.
"A ghost?" the priest questioned, "I've never heard of a ghost before. Have you Lord Zuko and Lady Mai?" he asked the younger adults. Both shook their heads ever-so-slightly. Danny looked at them in disbelief.
"Okay, seriously, you guys don't know what a ghost is?" he asked them. They only stared back in respond, causing Danny to sigh. "Well, you know…wait you don't. Argh! Well, you know when someone dies and they…become a ghost?"
"Oh! So you mean spirits," the priest rationalized. A blank look crossed Danny's face before he shrugged his shoulders.
"Yeah, I guess so; if you wanna put it that way." The three continued to stare at him as if he was some kind of freak. Danny resisted the urge to snap at them for not knowing what a ghost is.
"Sooooo," Mai drawled, dragging everyone's attention unto her, "where is Lu Ten?" The high priest nodded.
"Right behind these doors," the priest said as he gestured his arm towards the doors behind him. The three teens walked towards the doorway while the priest slid it open.
Danny froze on the threshold, his eyes trained on the spectral being in front of him.
The ghost was sitting on a mat with his legs crossed and his hands folded upon one another. The ghostly man had his black hair up into a bun, his brown eyes staring warmly at the three teens in front of him. He wore clothing that was similar to Zuko's, though, they looked like they were faded with age. But most of all, the man was transparent – as if he didn't have enough energy to fully solidify in the living realm.
Danny resisted the urge to face palm at that last thought. I'm really turning into my parents, he thought silently to himself.
"Lu Ten," Zuko greeted, bowing low, Mai following him. The ghost bowed his head at the couple.
"Zuko," Lu Ten spoke in a warm echoed voice, "it's nice to see you well." He flashed Mai a warm smile before he turned his attention onto Danny. "And Daniel, it's a pleasure to meet you," Lu Ten said happily as he bowed his head. Danny blinked in surprise while Zuko looked at the teen in shock.
How did Lu Ten know about Danny? Zuko thought to himself as Danny slowly bowed back, his face still in that utterly surprised look.
"How did you know my name?" Danny asked a little peeved that a stranger would know his name. Lu Ten only smiled.
"I will tell you, shortly," the ghost said, "but first, why don't you all sit down for a bit? The priest was nice enough to make you some tea."
Both Danny and Mai glanced at Zuko. The young Fire Lord took a calm breath before he sat down on one of the three cushions, with Danny and Mai following his actions. Mai poured some tea for the three of them and gave each living person a cup. Once Danny had sweetened his tea to his liking – with an ungodly amount of sugar cubes – Zuko spoke, "why did you want to see me?"
Lu Ten's smile faltered a bit as he hesitated slightly.
"Zuko, I came here to give you a warning," Lu Ten began gravely. All three teens tensed, Danny mostly because of the tone in the ghost's voice.
"There's trouble in the Spirit World," Lu Ten began, staring directly at his cousin.
"I know," Zuko said. "Spirits are coming into the living world, and refuse to leave. Why is that? What's happening in the Spirit World?" Zuko asked. Lu Ten sighed sadly.
"Something…something that only the Avatar and his companions can do," Lu Ten answered quietly.
"But I am-"
"No, you're not Zuko," Lu Ten interrupted. "You're the Fire Lord. You cannot help the Avatar with this problem." Zuko frowned and took a deep breath to calm himself.
"Okay, fine," Zuko grounded out, "but I knew that spirits have been appearing in the living world. Are they going to start appearing in the Fire Nation more?" At this, the spirit nodded his head.
"Yes, I came to warn you of them. Some of them…some of them are troublesome… Spirits of the innocents that passed during the war… They want vengeance." Zuko nodded solemnly.
"Is there anything I can do?" Zuko asked. "To stop or – at least – try to calm down the spirits?"
"Listen to them Zuko," Lu Ten told the young Fire Lord, "listen to them and see if you could grant their wishes. If that doesn't work or they are too dangerous, then have the Avatar come and help out. The Nation is still in your father's – and your grandfather's – shadow; you need to worry more about unifying the Nation under your rule." Zuko stared at Lu Ten's eyes a bit longer before he bowed his head slightly. "And in the meantime, you can have your priests strengthen the barrier between this world and the next. The stronger the barrier, the harder it is for spirits to enter this world."
"And where could they do it?"
"Places that is closer to the Spirit World….or places where the Avatar enters it." Zuko nodded again, causing the spirit to smile warmly.
"Excellent," Lu Ten said before turning to Danny, who flinched when the ghost looked at him.
"My turn?" Danny asked as he placed his tea down. The ghost only nodded.
"I have been requested to give you a message," Lu Ten began, but Danny interrupted him.
"From who?" the teen asked. Zuko shot Danny a glare, and was about to smack him, but Lu Ten waved him off.
"Roku," Lu Ten said simply.
Danny blinked and tilted his head slightly while both Zuko's and Mai's eyes widened.
"Who?"
"The Avatar previous to Aang," Zuko said, catching Danny's attention. "He died over a hundred years ago… So how come he knows you?"
"I don't know," Danny answered, "I've just heard the guy's name right now."
"Roku," Lu Ten began, bringing the attention back onto him, "told me to give you a message about…how you can get back home." Danny's eyes widened with surprise and leaned a bit closer to the ghost, feeling the familiar otherworldly power radiating from Lu Ten.
"Danny…" the ghost paused, "you shall find all of the answers to your questions…
"In Ba Sing Se."
Zuko and Mai shot each other a look while Danny frowned at the foreign words. "Ba Sing Se?" he echoed questionly. "And how the heck does that help me get back home?"
Lu Ten smiled at him. "Ba Sing Se is the Earth capital of the Earth Nation. There you will find some people who have the answers to all of your questions…and I'm sure that they will also help you back home."
"Who are they?"
"Roku didn't tell me," Lu Ten said, with a small smile. "You'll have to find that out for yourself."
Danny groaned, but nodded. At least I know where I'm going…where ever this Ba Sing Se is, he thought bitterly to himself. But how the heck am I supposed to know these people who're gonna help me?
"Thank you Lu Ten," Zuko said, bringing Danny out of his thoughts. Apparently he had zoned out when the others were talking because he noticed how both Zuko and Mai had stood up. Danny also quickly stood up and they all bowed at once to the ghost.
They were just about to turn around to leave when the ghost called out, "And Zuko," the said person halted, angling himself so that he could see his deceased cousin, who smiled sadly.
"Could you tell my father that I love him?" Lu Ten whispered. The young Fire Lord stared at his deceased relative before inclining his head ever so slightly. The spirit brightened before he vanished from the living world. Zuko stared at the spot, and then he turned and left the room with Mai and Danny following behind him.
The head priest stood before them. Danny's eye twitched when a new feeling raised inside of him – again, not one that belonged to him, but instead from the head priest…
Curiosity.
"What did he say?" the head priest asked them.
Zuko's reply was walking past the priest, saying, "I would like to look at these so-called 'barriers' between our world and the next." The head priest bit his lip but nodded and gestured down a hallway. Zuko followed the direction, along with Mai and Danny; however, the priest halted them.
"I'm sorry, but this is strictly between me and the Fire Lord," the head priest told the pair. Seeing Mai's (and more like feeling Zuko's) glares, the older elaborated, "it's a matter of security. Only other priests, the Fire Lord, and the Avatar can witness the barrier between worlds." Mai snorted, but stayed where she was. Danny only gave the priest an odd look. The head priest nodded his head absently and turned to lead Zuko towards the barrier, leaving the other two behind.
Silence.
"Well, I'm gonna explore," Danny announced as he turned heel to leave.
"Don't blame me if you get lost," Mai stated in a bored voice. Her eyes were still fixed on the spot where Zuko and the priest disappeared. Danny shrugged and turned a corner, away from Mai.
The halfa wondered down the hallways, ignoring the temptation of opening a door to see what's inside. Every so often, a priest would pass by; muttering under their breaths, but other than the brief sight, there was hardly anyone in the hallways.
Danny rounded another corner and suddenly froze, his neck hairs rising creepily. He recognizes this sensation…
Ghosts.
"But where?" Danny mumbled to himself. He looked down this particular hallway; one side full of paper windows while other was just regular walls. About in the middle of the windows was a sliding paper door.
Frowning, Danny strolled over towards the door and paused.
The feeling was stronger…
His fingers clung into the door hole and gently, the hybrid slid the door open.
Eyes wide and mouth slightly open in a small 'o', Danny stepped through the door and walked until he had reached the covered porch's steps before he stopped once more.
Ahead of him was an oasis. The canyon walls stood tall over the lush green space, huge boulders poking through the grass here and there. A small waterfall trickled from a ledge of the cliff, landing into a pool before streaming off to the side, away from the shrine. Deeper in this oasis, Danny could make out a raised stoned platform, with two fires lit safety inside a raised basin.
His core thrummed once.
Danny stepped down from the porch, and marched through the waist high grass, leaving a wavy trail behind him. Danny was uncharacteristically quiet, muted excitement slowly building along with the humming of his core. The closer he gets to the platform, the more active his core becomes.
Soft whispers and faded sounds began to surround him as his vision begins to blur; colors popping out, but yet fading away. His core was now beating in his chest, ready to be alive once more.
This has to be a doorway into the Ghost Zone, he thought to himself, just mere yards away from the platform.
Completely entranced by the prospect of finally getting somewhere familiar, Danny was just mere feet away from the 'portal' when his shoulder was pulled backwards and the next thing Danny knew was that he was staring at the great blue sky, his back firmly planted in the grass.
"Wha?" Danny began, only to stutter when searing pain burst on his chest; at the same time an angered priest's face appeared in his sight.
"Get out!" the priest shouted at him.
Danny only stared wide-eyed at the priest, his words not sinking through the humming of Danny's active core.
"Bu-" Danny mumbled until the priest raised his arm, fire licking around his fist.
"GET OUT!" the priest roared, sending some flames at Danny.
The attack jolted Danny out of his trance and scuttled away from the flames. The burning sensation seared his chest as the halfa quickly retreated back into the shrine.
"And STAY OUT!" the priest screamed as Danny entered the shrine and took off down the hallway. He rushed by, passing priests who slammed themselves against the walls in fear of being run over by the teen. It wasn't until Danny neared another corner did he stop and bent over, breathing heavily from running and from the after effects of feeling that priest's anger.
And boy, he was pissed at Danny.
"I wonder," Danny panted out, "what…was his problem?" He continued breathing until he could manage standing straight up, his head leaning against the wall. Sky blue eyes stared into the opposite wall before he realized something.
"That was the Ghost Zone!" he exclaimed to himself. "I was almost home!"
Now furious at the priest interrupting him, Danny turned back around the corner and walked down the hallway, taking a left and continued until he had reached a T-way. He paused there for moment, trying to remember whether he took a right or a left to get to the oasis garden.
Or…would've been a right or left to get him to where he was now?
"Great, now I'm lost," Danny muttered darkly. He stared down hard at both hallways, trying to remember how to get back…
That same heat returned to his chest…
"To the right it is then," Danny whispered happily. That priest must still be angry at him, and it'll help lead him back to the door into the Ghost Zone! He went around the corner and saw-
"Ow!"
"Ouch!" Danny cried, clutching his head. "Watch where you're-"
"How about you first!" Zuko snorted at Danny, also bending a little as he rubbed his forehead. The hybrid blinked at the Fire Lord, silently cursing himself in his head. Mai was right behind her boyfriend, raising a slender eyebrow at the two.
"We've been looking for you for a while now," she stated as matter a fact.
"Oh, sorry," Danny said sarcastically. Mai narrowed her eyes while Zuko finally stood up, huffing a bit in irritation.
"We're leaving now," Zuko told Danny. The hybrid opened his mouth to object, but Zuko continued over him, "We're lucky enough to get one of ships to set sail tomorrow morning. It'll take about a week to cross the ocean and into Earth Kingdom waters. Hopefully you don't get seasickness easily."
Danny's train of thought halted.
"What?" he asked. At this, both of Mai and Zuko's eyes rolled.
"I guess this means that you don't really want to go home," Mai stated dryly. At that, Danny's eyes widened.
"Oh," he mumbled before frowning. But the doorway into the Ghost Zone…he's so close…
"Danny?" Mai pressed, a bit worried that the teen wasn't overly excited that all of his problems would be solved. The couple could've sworn that they saw him weighing his options and they shared a concerned look at each other.
What other options could he have?
"Let's go then," the foreigner said, shaking Mai and Zuko back to paying attention to him. Danny smiled warmly at the two, as he walked past the couple. "We better listen to your cousin, Zuko. Ghosts generally have great advice," he said, chuckling a bit.
Mai and Zuko only shared each other looks of bewilderment.
Thank you guys for reading this and being patient with me! It'll be just one more chapter until Danny finally meets Team Avatar; even though it'll seem almost more like a filler and will more likely be shorter than this one. ^^;
Here comes the valid excuse(s)…
I've been so busy with school and work. And school is still demanding much Much MUCH of my time. (Hint: if you go into Architecture, you better live on campus. Trust Me. Spend your money and your time if you're really committed to it cuz it absolutely sucks when you're commuting in your second year. Losing those two hours a day for me was a killer and I've spent about a quarter of the year camping out under my desk in studio or crashing on my friend's sofa. And most of the time when I get home, I had to do homework and then basically crash into my own bed!)
Not only that, but my laptop totally fried itself at the beginning of vacation! DX But – after nearly two months – it's finally fixed! XD I'm so happy! This was way worse than giving up Fanfiction, deviantArt, and Tumblr for lent. (Yes I am on Tumblr now under the same username HOWEVER I am hardly on it so you've been warned.)
Also, I've managed to keep my job from the summer and I also ended up with a boyfriend…and I also broke up with him cuz I'm not serious about our relationship and he is…was… Either way I ended it and I'm not planning on dating again until after I get my Masters degree.
BUTTTT I DO have good news. I will be able to follow my own advice and take out a couple of loans so that I can live in the same town that I go to college! The only reason why I'm not getting a dorm is because once I leave the house, my cat has to go with me; and I don't think many people would adopt a ten-year-old cat either. Plus, she would be heartbroken if I just abandoned her… *thinks of Mittens in Bolt…sobs* Sadly, I would still have to commute for at least a month until I can get the loan money. 5 days a week, 10 hours on the road a week, around 100 dollars for gas per week…
*sigh*
Anyways, again, thank you guys so much for your support and for your patience! Never be afraid to leave a review behind! They always give me that extra boost to get these chapters done quicker! And seeing those favs and follows appearing even though I haven't updated for a year really made my day too! Thank you all! *hugs*
And as always, I apologize with any spelling or grammar errors.
